Emptying trash is VERY slow!

Is it normal that emptying the trash takes so long? Last night it took iPhone about 1 hour to delete the 2000 photo's.

Force quit. Your Library is damaged.
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Empty Trash Securely: Too Slow

    Hi Everyone:
I recently moved a bunch of External HD around, so I have a lot of files to delete. I have always emptied my trash securely. Yes, it takes a little longer but I don't mind. the pace was always fine for me. Until I have 326,410 items to get rid of. I have deleted over 200,000 items before, and it took all day, and part of another to do, and that's fine. But I have been erasing for 4 days now, and only got rid of 7,000 items. Most are movie files, and maybe after the move files are done, it will go fast.
Does anyone know why this is, and maybe it might be a better idea to not empty securely. Any thoughts. Thanks a lot.

There are a few different "strengths" of secure deletion. I believe the srm command that the Finder uses is the medium level, which will "overwrite the file with 7 US DoD compliant passes". There is also a 3 pass method, but either way you are looking at a whole lot of disk writing.
In addition to having several hundred thousand files to deal with, the larger the disk space used the longer it will take. For something like this, it might even be faster to just empty the trash normally (for this many items, it will take a while anyway) and use *Disk Utility* to securely erase the free space. *Disk Utility* also gives you the ability to select the deleting option.

  • Empty Trash is S-L-O-W.

Can anyone explain and/or help me with this problem? I am running my iPhoto library on a 2TB, w/Firewire 800, external HD attached to my Mac Mini. I have updated my OS to the latest version and am running the latest version of iPhoto 09. (With all the yelling I hear about iPhoto 11, there is no way I am going to try that!) I am combining several Libraries into one which is why I bought a huge eHD.
I have used Library Manager to combine very similiar libraries and had the "don't move duplicates" on when I did that. Afetr I combined them, my total went from about 15,000 to about 19,000 images. I then ran Duplicate Annilator which identified about 3,000+ duplicates. (Looks like Library Manager was not a total solution to eliminating the transfer of duplicates.) Empty Trash was slow. Then I ran the rebuild function in iPhoto using only the first button "rebuild thumbnails."
Empty Trash is still slow. I only put between 80 and 120 images in the trash before I try and do the empty function. It works but this takes close to one hour. You can quickly see I have roughly 30 hours of work to get rid of 3,000 at 100 per pop. And since I don't sit here waiting, this may take me a week to empty all the duplicates out of the library. Not to mention that I don't really trust it too much.
I also find it irritating that there is no progress bar on empty trash. My only way of knowing I have started is that before you punch the "are you sure" button it is glowing brighter back and forth. The minute I punch it, it stops glowing and goes very still which tells me the machine is doing the job. But there is no indication of how much has been done until suddenly the number of images in the trash goes to (0).
Any idea how this can be speeded up?
FYI: Once this is completed, I am going to ditch iPhoto and have already purchased a copy of Aperture. Most of my work is done in RAW.
BTW: I just got my Apple TV working the the rec room and it is WONDERFUL to see the pictures on the big TV. Very cool.
    Thanks. Maury

The problem is solved. I tried to run some more pictures and this time when it finished, I was left with a beach ball (NOT spinning) instead of my arrow pointer. What the ****? Could not make it go away but it did work for clicking. So I decided to RESTART and when the computer came back to life, the pointer had returned. So I loaded up another 120 images to trash. But now the trash was gone in just a few minutes. WOW. So I loaded 250. Again, gone is just a few minutes. WAZOO. This time I loaded up 650 pictures. Again gone in just a few minutes. GREAT.
But I still do not get a progress bar, just the pulsating OK buttton which going still when I press it.
I don't have any idea what was wrong or what fixed it. But RESTART did the trick.
    Thsi problem is solved.

  • Secure Empty Trash doesn't work

Working in Mavericks on an iMac 27. Secure Empty Trash starts but disappears and nothing is deleted. Is it safe to use Erase Free Space in Disk Utility?

    danimal303 wrote:
So it won't help me at all. I don't quite see any use for it, a good reason not to use it. But I have some 560 000 files in Trash and they won't budge.
When you delete a file (without Secure Empty Trash), all the data of the file still exists on the file system free list.  It will remain there until the file system reuses the space.  Erase Free Space is a way to address this, after files have been deleted.
It is only really useful as a once in a while event, such as someone forgot to use Secure Empty Trash for a file with sensitive data.  And Secure Empty Trash is very time consuming, and worse it is if you have an SSD, this wears out the SSD faster.
A better approach is to use FileVault so that a deleted file is instantly securely deleted because it was always encrypted.
Since you are attempting to use Secure Empty Trash, then I would try this from the command line using the 'srm' command.  "man srm"
    srm -f -r -v ~/.Trash/*
The srm command will perform a secure erase.  The -f will keep it from prompting for approval.  The -r will recurse through and directories of files in the trash.  The -v will display the progress while deleting so you can see how things are going, and have an idea of how much progress you are making.
Be very careful with srm, as if you point it at the wrong directory it could delete something you care about, or a lot of somethings.
If there are files that srm -f will not delete, then you bring out the sudo command.  But be VERY CAREFUL with sudo, as you can delete a lot more than just a few files you care about.
    sudo srm -f -r -v ~/.Trash/*

  • Secure empty trash very slow

Are there suggestions for speeding up Secure Empty Trash?

I got a tip from a Genius at the Green Hills (Nashville) Apple Support Bar today on how to instantly empty the Trash folder.  This comes with a big warning/disclaimer:  you will not be prompted about any of the action to delete the contents of your Trash as this sequence of steps force deletes all trash.  In other words, there's no turning back.  I did this after facing 8 hours of a trash emptying cycle to get rid of 280,000 files...
Here it is:  while simultaneosly holding down Command + Option keys, press Shift and then press Delete (all four, in that order).
It works - it's instant!  But be sure you want to take this action.

Have you just upgraded by the sound of it? Snow Leopard's trash is fine here.
Check to see if your Finder Preferences > Advanced tab has Empty Trash securely selected. That will slow things down. If so, deselect it to speed things up.

  • Why is emptying trash so slow?  Is there a way to make it faster?

I am trying to clean up my external hard drives, by moving things to trash.  There are several several items, but this is A MacBook PRO and I thought emptying trash would be a fast process.  It's taken about 24 hours to delete roughly 200 items.  Is there a faster way to delete stuff?

Relaunch the Finder, then from the Finder menu bar, select
              Finder ▹ Preferences... ▹ Advanced
    and uncheck the box marked
              Empty Trash securely
Try again to empty the Trash.

  • Empty Trash extremely slow

Lots of Fan noise and slowly counting down while emptying trash. We're talking one item per second here. Not good if you wanna flush 1600 items (used to take 1 sec in total).
This is a clean install of 10.6. I did that because of the same problem after updating 10.5 to 10.6.
    Any 'fix' known?

Try using the terminal. Go to
    ~.Trash
and use the "rm" command, e.g., >> rm *
if that does work see >> man rm
for details using the "rm" command
    rm -rf *
cures most any issues with the quickness.
    I hope this helps.

hi all. When pressed play and make some changes in loop (eg fade in fade out) are very slow to implement, and also the loops from the library are very slow to play, corrects the somewhat self so is the Logic??

    Hey there Logic Pro21,
It sounds like you are seeing some odd performance issues with Logic Pro X. I recommend these troubleshooting steps specifically from the following article to help troubleshoot what is happening:
    Logic Pro X: Troubleshooting basics
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5859
Verify that your computer meets the system requirements for Logic Pro X
See Logic Pro X Technical Specifications.
Test using the computer's built-in audio hardware
If you use external audio hardware, try setting Logic Pro X to use the built-in audio hardware on your computer. Choose Logic Pro X > Preferences > Audio from the main menu and click the Devices tab. Choose the built in audio hardware from the Input Device and Output Device pop-up menus. If the issue is resolved using built-in audio, refer to the manufacturer of your audio interface.
Start Logic with a different project template
Sometimes project files can become damaged, causing unexpected behavior in Logic. If you use a template, damage to the template can cause unexpected results with any project subsequently created from it. To create a completely fresh project choose File > New from Template and select Empty Project in the template selector window. Test to see if the issue is resolved in the new project.
Sometimes, issues with the data in a project can be repaired. Open an affected project and open the Project Information window with the Project Information key command. Click Reorganize Memory to attempt to repair the project. When you reorganize memory, the current project is checked for any signs of damage, structural problems, and unused blocks. If any unused blocks are found, you will be able to remove these, and repair the project. Project memory is also reorganized automatically after saving or opening a project.
    Delete the user preferences
You can resolve many issues by restoring Logic Pro X back to its original settings. This will not impact your media files. To reset your Logic Pro X user preference settings to their original state, do the following:
In the Finder, choose Go to Folder from the Go menu.
Type ~/Library/Preferences in the "Go to the folder" field.
    Press the Go button.
Remove the com.apple.logic10.plist file from the Preferences folder. Note that if you have programmed any custom key commands, this will reset them to the defaults. You may wish to export your custom key command as a preset before performing this step. See the Logic Pro X User Manual for details on how to do this. If you are having trouble with a control surface in Logic Pro X, then you may also wish to delete the com.apple.logic.pro.cs file from the preferences folder.
If you have upgraded from an earlier version of Logic Pro, you should also remove~/Library/Preferences/Logic/com.apple.logic.pro.
    Restart the computer.
Isolate an issue by using another user account
For more information see Isolating an issue by using another user account.
    Reinstall Logic Pro X
Another approach you might consider is reinstalling Logic Pro X. To do this effectively, you need to remove the application, then reinstall Logic Pro X. You don't have to remove everything that was installed with Logic Pro X. Follow the steps below to completely reinstall a fresh copy of Logic Pro X.
In the Finder, choose Applications from the Go menu.
Locate the Logic Pro X application and drag it to the trash.
    Open the Mac App Store
Click the Purchases button in the Mac App Store toolbar.
Sign in to the Mac App Store using the Apple ID you first used to purchase Logic Pro X.
Look for Logic Pro X in the list of purchased applications in the App Store. If you don't see Logic Pro X in the list, make sure it's not hidden. See Mac App Store: Hiding and unhiding purchases for more information.
Click Install to download and install Logic Pro X.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    Sterling

  • Early 2009 iMac is running very slow

My early 2009 is running very slow.  Takes about a minute to open Safari upon start-up....even opening up folders from finder take a long time.  Get the spinning beachball often.  Opening websites takes 30-40 seconds sometimes....they do open eventually.  I have run permissions repair from Disk Utility. Our iPad has no such problems.  iMac is hardwired, iPad is wireless.  I ran a report with "EtreCheck" but don't really understand what it is telling me.  I have about 100GB of space left out of 300GB.  Will attach "EtreCheck" report if I can figure out how!
Thanks so much for any help!  Only recent changes I have made is upgrading iPhone and updating Charter Cable Security Suite.

  • Emptying trash isn't freeing up any space on MacBook Pro or external drive. Time Machine is OFF.

Yesterday, while using Final Cut Pro X, I noticed the program/my computer was starting to run slow--and then I was totally caught off guard by a warning that my startup disk was full. I checked Storage and Finder and both my MacBook Pro and external drive had less than 1gb of space each! I usually use Secure Empty Trash and have no problems...but for my drives to be full, it clearly hasn't been working for a few days, possibly weeks.
I'm using a MacBook Pro (early 2011) and a LaCie Thunderbolt external drive. I'm running Mavericks (10.9.2)
I am not using Time Machine. When I look at Storage under About This Mac, my Backups on my MBP and LaCie drive are both at zero KB.
I read through the forums and tried going into Terminal and entering sudo rm -rf ~/.Trash ...but all that did was free up about 10gb on my external drive (I'd emptied upwards of 90gb from my trash).
Right now I'm basically stuck with a slow laptop and very little storage space, which has slowed my work to a halt. Does anyone know how to fix this?

    Some space suggestions.

I own a 13-inch MacBook Pro and for the past day, my wifi on my laptop says I only have two bars of connection and is running very slow, but all of my other devices such as my iPhone and iPad are connecting perfectly to the wifi. How can I fix this? I have tried to shut my laptop off and let it rest and I have also re-started my wifi router three different times. Someone please help me with this problem so I can begin to use my laptop again as I take it to school and use it for class.
    Thanks so much!

FCP, and all software on OSX, has a few different "preference" files (the extension is .plist), which store all your user settings. Each time you resize a window, change a setting, anything, this file is re-written. Kinda easy to see how they would become corrupt every now and then.
    -Close FCP
-Navigate to User>Library>Preferences and delete com.apple.FinalCutPro.plist
-Navigate to User>Library>Preferences>Final Cut Pro User Data and delete Final Cut Pro 5.0 Prefs
    -Empty your trash
Relaunch FCP and see if that worked.
Download FCP Rescue to make this process easier in the future. When you have FCP running really smooth, open FCP Rescue and create a backup of your preference files. If it starts acting wanky, just run FCP Rescue and Restore your backup preferences. Works really slick, and it's free.
EDIT: Or use the really simple explaination that X posted as I was typing.
