EMTEC Flash Drive

I'm trying to get data off a 16gb EMTEC flash drive. The red light is on, but after going into "About This Mac" it is saying the S.M.A.R.T status is not supported. Never have had an issue with flash drives before. What can I do?

Hi,

  • HT1751 I need to uninstall and reinstall iTunes (it won't let me update). So, how do I copy or back up my iTunes library of over 1,500 songs? Can I use a Flash Drive to do so?

I need to uninstall and reinstall iTunes (it won't let me update). I have IE 8 on Windows XP, and iTunes 10 something. In my Program files list I see iTunes and iTunes (2) and even iPod and iPod (2) where a tech had to back up and do this for me before. I'm just trying to fix it all. I keep getting the "The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable. Click OK to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package 'iTunes.msi' in the box below." I can even run a search and find the folder, but it gives me the same error message. I was planning on using the Microsoft Fix-It tool  to help uninstall then Reinstall iTunes. But I need to backup my library. So, how do I copy or back up my iTunes library of over 1,500 songs? Can I copy the folder to desktop or can I use a Flash Drive to backup my music? I don't want to do anything until I know for sure how I can backup my songs, and then reinstall them into iTunes. Thanks for any help.

Ok, thanks that helps. I don't have an external hard drive though. What about backing up through 'the cloud'? I'm just wondering since my husband syncs his iPod to the PC through iTunes and he's worried that he will lose all the songs on his iPod if the library is lost from iTunes and he tries to 'sync' it up again. I'm not exactly sure how to  'copy the entire iTunes folder' either. I kinda suck at this unless I have step by step instructions, which I haven't found yet on iTunes help or other sources.
The only way I know how to back anything up is by going back to a restore point, etc. (as stated before, we don't have an external hard drive.)
    Thanks for the info.

Hold down the Option key while you boot your Mac. Then, it should show you a selection of devices. Click your flash drive and it will boot from that.

Mac OS X has a built-in disk diagnostic and repair program called fsck or file system consistency check. Here’s how to verify and repair your startup disk with fsck.  As soon as you hear the startup tone, press and hold Command-S on the keyboard. Keep holding down those keys until you see a black screen with white lettering. This is called “booting into Single User Mode.”  As the Mac boots in this mode, the screen reports each step of the process. The line should end in root#.  Right after the root# prompt, enter the following: /sbin/fsck -fy
If repairing the disk in single user mode fails, it means one of two things. Either your hard drive itself is failing (a hardware failure), or the directory damage on your hard drive is beyond the capability of the built-in repair procedures in OS X.

  • How do I import music from a flash drive that was formatted with a windows PC to my MacBook?

How do I import music from a flash drive that was formatted with a windows PC to my MacBook - the drive is showing it has over 3GB of info on it but none of the files are showing up in finder?  I had backed up my iTunes library on the flash drive about a year and a half ago before I switched from a dell to a MacBook pro.

What I found works for me is to make sure iTunes keeps the music files organzied in the iTunes Media folder according to album, artists, etc. and that it copies the music files there when adding them to the library.  That way, if something happens to the library, the raw files can always be re-imported again.

  • MSI P965 Neo-F (MS-7235) problem booting from USB flash drive

    Hi, all!
I was wondering if someone can help me. I am trying to install Windows 7 x64 on my 320GB HDD that is connected to my MSI P965 Neo-F (MS-7235) mobo (The CPU is a Core2Duo 6600 with 6GB of RAM). I created a bootable USB 8GB flash drive using Microsoft's "Windows 7 DVD USB Download Tool" and bootsect.exe (Needed to create a boot sector on the USB drive) from the MS store. I successfully tested the resulting bootable USB drive using freeware MobaLiveCD (Sorry, you'll have to Google "mobalivecd" since this forum doesn't seem to allow external links) running under Windows XP SP3 x86 (32bit). Under MobaLive's QEMU, Windows 7 setup loaded its files and produced an error message basically saying that it could not install Windows 7 x64 under an x86 OS (No surprise there since QEMU is emulating a 32bit processor - The point is that the bootable USB drive I created works).
I then went into my mobo's CMOS and under Advanced BIOS Features -> Boot Sequence -> 1st Boot Device, set the value to "USB-HDD" and rebooted my machine. The USB drive probably was not detected by the mobo under that setting because it proceeded to boot from my HDD which is the 2nd Boot Device. I repeated the same process using each one of the  four USB ports in the rear of the mobo (I don't have the optional USB panel that the MSI users manual mentions) to no avail. I also tried setting the 1st Boot Device to "USB-FDD" and repeated the process for each USB port but the mobo still will not boot from the USB drive (It does not recognize it). When I set the 1st Boot Device to "USB-ZIP" and rebooted, the mobo hangs after "Verifying DMI Pool Data ..." which is no surprise since I am not using a USB ZIP drive but a USB flash drive. It appears that under that setting, it recognizes that there is a USB device attached but it is expecting a response (From a USB ZIP drive). I had no idea it would be this frustrating to boot from a USB flash drive! If anyone knows how to make this mobo boot from a USB flash drive, please let me know. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The P965 Neo motherboard is 8 years old, so don't expect miracles. .... You need to format the USB stick in the proper way. You may use this utility to do it: hxxp://www.prime-expert.com/flashboot/ Also, it's a good idea to use the first (USB0) connector (controlled by Intel ICH8) for the USB flash drive. Good luck.
Thank You for your fast response, RemusM!
I'm not looking for a miracle. I'm just looking for a mobo that does what it is supposed to do: Allow me to boot from a USB flash drive (I don't think that is too much to ask for even from a board that was made in 2006)!
Thanks for recommending FlashBoot. I see under their "Why FlashBoot" section that it "... does not shift to user the burden of choice between "USB-ZIP" and "USB-HDD" at format time and proper BIOS setup at boot time. ... and every USB disk is formatted in such way that it will work in every environment properly, regardless of current BIOS setting.", so I will give it a try and let you know about the results afterwards.

  • Efi update via usb flash drive?

I would like to know if there is a way to perform an efi update via a usb flash drive?

tried the latest 2010 build, got the same problem: 'missing operating system' and again in ubuntu the flash drive is an unknown filesystem.
tried again on a different computer and got the same error.. how frustrating!
edit: just to clarify i used the following command 'sudo dd if=path/to/image.img of=/path/to/device' i also changed directory to where the image file is and tried again without absolute referencing the path for 'if=' both of which returned that the command had been completed successfully in terminal.
edit: tried using again with a different USB stick (Maxell 4GB), again terminal returned 'x amount of files successfully copied to sdc1'.
.. something different happened this time, i didn't get the same error as before, instead the text 'grub' appears with a blinking cursor. nothing else.

  • How to remove document from Flash drive after printing from a PC

    Hi All,
Here's my problem: Today I needed to print an MS Word file at a printshop, so I saved the document onto my Flash drive and took it to the shop. There, the staff printed the document from a PC and handed the drive back to me.
Now, back at home, I want to delete this document from the Flash Drive. I plug in the drive, select the document and drag it to the trash. But then I get this message: " The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for document X".
This is a document I created from scratch, so I should have read/write privileges, yet the document on the drive is Read Only.
I went back to the shop, and they get the same message.
If I try to use disk utility to erase the disk, it appears as an MS-DOS FIle System (FAT 16) disk, and the erase buttons are "greyed out".
How can I erase this document? Or how I can I reformat the drive?
    Any help much appreciated!~

I think I just solved my own problem. Just tried pressing the option and command keys at the same time while dragging the document into the trash and now it's gone. For good, I hope....Phew!

  • Do not buy the USB3 PNY Turbo Flash Drive!

I have highly recommended the USB 3 PNY Turbo Flash Drive in the recent past as a fantastic Read storage device.  Well do not buy it.  PNY drastically changed the memory chips inside without changing the model number and now it is a terrible device for holding your media for editing operations.
Thanks to Randall for making me aware of this problem.  I now have 4 of the older good type and 3 bum ones.  Here are two Windows 8 transfer plots of a large AVI file from the USB 3 Flash drive to a Samsung 840 Pro on my laptop.  The first one is the original one that I purchased last July with a file transfer rate of 185 MB/s, and the second plot is the lousy performance of 120 MB/sec.of one of the last devices purchased in November.
The new ones are usable but nowhere as desirable as the 1st generation.  I checked several websites and see that they no longer advertise the old faster specifications.  Also I have tested all my devices and scoring is consistent and very repeatable.  Now, that I know it is possible, I will start looking for a new vender that give the great read rate ideal for laptop editing.  Of course it is not as convenient as a USB 3 Flash drive but my Vantec NexStar 6G USB 3 SSD enclosure with a Samsung 840 Pro drive has a Read rate of 250 MB/second.

    Bill,
It looks like you may have to settle for a slower flash drive at this price point for the foreseeable future: Every single one of the USB 3.0 flash drives at this capacity point that delivers at least the same level of read performance as the original PNY Turbo costs much more money than the PNY. ($150-ish for a SanDisk Extreme Pro 128GB USB 3.0 flash drive, anyone?)
With that said, the PNY Turbo 3.0 is only intended to compete with the slower USB 3.0 flash drives such as the SanDisk Ultra USB 3.0 drive (whose maximum read speed is only 100 MB/sec even in its largest-capacity 128GB version).

  • Why can't I move downloads to flash drive  without "don't have permission" message

I continue to get this message when I go to the files I downloaded onto the computer and drag them to the flash drive,
"The operation can’t be completed because you don’t have permission to access some of the items."
I can move the files anywhere on the computer but can't move to an external source. I also get a similar message when trying to delete recycle bin. I have only had my macbook for two weeks and I'm not very happy with some of the stupid obstacles I am dealing with. I have went into the permissions for everything that gives me trouble and they all say read and write so I would think I should be able to maneuver around my laptop that I just spent over a grand on without any trouble.
I haven't tried saving work to an external hard drive because I always email my work to myself to this is the first problem that I can think of involving different sources connected to the computer.  But I have so far used the mac for the internet and to type some papers so I'm not sure what other problems I will encounter.

How is the flash drive formatted?  NTFS?  HFS?

  • Blocking downloads to hard drive, but not flash drives

Blocking downloads to hard drive, but not flash drives
A nonprofit has asked me to configure new Windows 7 computers so that all content is BLOCKED from the hard drive, but any downloads may be downloaded to the individual's flash drive.
The nonprofit allows individuals to play games, check e-mails, but we have a problem with them trying to upgrade Firefox, Google, etc.
They want all configuration to the DEFAULT STATUS after a person log off the computer....no upgrades to any programs!
I will occasionally upgrade programs once a month or so, as the volunteer administrator.
They have changed the controls from Windows ME and XP, when I was a computer programmer and installer (I also worked during Windows 3.11, 95 and 98/98 SE versions as well)...
    Anyone help me, please?

    1. You can change security with cacls function. However if you do it in wrong way, you can cut the branch you are sitting on:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb490872.aspx
    2. If you are working in Active Directory, consider Group Policy
    3. Consider third pty software for granular access control (DeviceLock,...)
    4. There is nearly nothing that you can transfer from previous technologies. (Even nice
steady state in Windows XP has no continuation. Consider
    kiosk mode in Windows 8.1)
