  • Why is Enable Additional Features not available in Pro X?

I have created a form with Acrobat Professional X and now want to save it so it can be filled in by users with
Acrobat Reader, but when I choose File>Save As>Reader Extended PDF> Enable Additional Features - it's not available. Enable Additional Features is greyed out. I've checked that the document's security is set to No Security and I paid good money for the Professional version - why is this feature not available?

Strangest thing. I closed out of Acrobat entirely and then reopened the document and suddenly the option was there! I've been struggling with this for an hour and scouring the forums thinking it had to be available somehow, but no where did I find the suggestion to close out and open again. So now the big test - will it work on a Mac?
Answer - No! I still get the message that the document enabled extended features in Adobe Reader has been changed since it was created and use of extended features is no longer available - lord, I'm tired of trying to get this to work.

  • Batch Conversion PDF 1.4 to 1.8 with Extending the "Enabling Additional Features"

Hoping someone can help me with this. I'm by no means proficient in Acrobat.  I have thousands of PDFs that are 1.4 that I need to convert to 1.8 and have user's be able to use the form fields and sign with Acrobat Reader 9.
We interface with these pages from the web. I am using ColdFusion Builder CS5 to pre-populate some of the form fields on the PDF pages when they come up on the web then the users fill out the rest.  Up until now we have been using Adobe v 5 (1.4) and putting off the upgrade.  Most users are now on Reader 9 so I need to get this upgrade done.  I'm using Acrobat X.  My theory was to use the Action Wizard, make Adobe PDF my default printer--making sure that it is set up to convert to Standard--1.8. Using the Action Wizard, set up the directory where all of the PDFs currently reside as the Start With "A Folder on My Computer" then as a Step use the "Printer".  Then as the 3rd Step Save To: "A Folder On my Computer:" Just another destination Folder where it can dump then up-converted files.  It does convert the files to the new version however my problem is it does so without the "Enabling Additonal Features. The users can't use the form features or sign from Reader 9.  Any help is greatly appreciated.

Acrobat does not support automation of the Reader-extension process by any method. It is a feature which Adobe reserve solely for their LiveCycle server product range.

Our requirement is like we received a PDF template from client. we added an image field by using Adobe LiveCycle designer to achieve user signature on the field & save the PDF form, once signature field is added; PDF form is opened in Adobe Acrobat X pro to enable readers extensions (open PDF form in Adobe Acrobat X pro -> File -> Save As - > Readers Extended PDF -> Enable Additional features.).
Once this reader Enabled PDF form is uploaded in sharepoint Document library where from user can download this form on their local, open this PDF form is opened in Adobe Reader on their local system the Above mentioned message appears.
Here we are using trial version of Adobe Acrobat X Pro, Can you please confirm if this error is because of this trial version? or some alternate approch.

  • Scripts stop working when extended with "additional features"

I have a couple of scripts that work fine in both Pro and Reader, but when I Save As -> Reader Extended PDF -> Enable Additional Features, they stop working (in both Pro and Reader). Other scripts in the same form continue to work just fine. I'm at a total loss, and so are my IT folks (who admittedly aren't exactly form/JS/Adobe experts...)
I've been fighting with this problem off and on for a week or so now, and I've tried a couple of different approaches - I'm a JS muddler, and I'm sure there are more effective ways to do what I want to do. But everything I try gives me a different problem . I'm going to try to separate out the different issues in different posts...but I'm getting pretty confused!
For what it's worth, the problem scripts are on the first and last master page, while the ones that work are on regular pages.
The goal is to reuse a partially filled-out form for several different phases of an approval process. Each version gets a different title, and an additional subform is visible during the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th phases.
    Here's the overall workflow:
    Phase 1
The form starts out with the Phase 1 title and with the additional subform "hidden."
A remote user fills out the form and returns it to the program coordinator.
    Phase 2/3/4
The coordinator saves a copy of the form with a different name.
The coordinator checks a "For admin use only" checkbox to display a radio button group. Each option changes the title and sets the additional subform presence to "visible."
The coordinator unchecks the "For admin use only" checkbox to hide the radio buttons.
The title is in a text field. The scripts change the rawValue of the field for each option.
In this case, I have the following script in both the initialize and calculate events of the text box:
    if   (S_SelectTitle.S_Actions.RB_SelectTitle.rawValue == 2)
         this.rawValue = "Phase 2";
    else if (S_SelectTitle.S_Actions.RB_SelectTitle.rawValue == 3)
         this.rawValue = "Phase 3";
    else if (S_SelectTitle.S_Actions.RB_SelectTitle.rawValue == 4)
         this.rawValue = "Phase 4";
    else
         this.rawValue = "Phase 1";
and similar code in the initialize and calcuate events of the subform to make its presence "visible" or "hidden." (I've used this initialize/calculate event strategy before, it's always worked fine. But I"ve run into problems with it in one of the alternate approaches i've been using on this form, so I"m totally open to other ways of doing it...)
Before I extend the form for Reader, it works fine. The title changes correctly depending on which button is selected, the new subform appears at the end, and the radio buttons go away when the box is unchecked.
After I extend it for Reader, nothing works except the checkbox. The title doesn't change, and the subform never appears.
    Help? Thanks in advance!

Well, it seems that interactive objects on master pages are problematic. Using a few message boxes, we discovered that the Initialize event fires each time a radio button on a master page is selected, but not when the radio button is in the body of the form.
So each time we clicked the radio button on the master page, the Initialize event set the value of the exclusion group right back to the default value (which was null, in this case). So the title never changed, because the radio button setting didn't stick.
For this form, I figured out a way to remove the radio buttons from the master page. Not only do the titles in the headers change correctly, the form also works with the Reader extensions enabled!
I'm not sure which issue was hanging me up -- the buttons on the master page or Reader extensions -- or if they're tied together somehow. But the moral of the story for me, anyhow, is no more buttons on master pages. Hope this helps someone else!

  • Livecycle button with an action bypassed if 'enable additional featues' actioned

I have created a form in Livecycle that has a button with an action that when clicked repeats several rows of a table.  (ie if someone needs to see more rows they click the button)
This works fine in the Preview PDF and works fine once saved  if I then open the file in Acrobat.  But if I 'enable additional features' when I re open the file the extra rows appear immediately prior to pressing the button.  Can't someone explain how I stop that happening

Put your form:ready event script into the initialize event.

  • How to enable Extended Features in Reader 10

I have pdf forms that were created in Acrobat 8 Pro. Users could change the fields on the forms and save them. Our Enterprise has since "upgraded" to Reader 10. Users can longer make changes in the fields of the forms created in v.8 Pro. I have read the solution in this forum to this issue, which is:
"To Reader-enable a document in Acrobat 10, select: File > Save As > Reader Extended PDF > Enable Additional Features.
Do this as the final step when preparing the document to be sent out."
However, I do not have File > Save As > Reader Extended PDF. Under the File > Save As menu, I only have PDF or Text, not Reader Extended. So how can I fix these pdf's so users can edit the fields and save them? We have hundreds of these documents we need to edit then save. Many thanks.

If your menu only says "PDF" and "Text" you're in Adobe Reader, not Acrobat.

  • Hi, Is it possible to enable Adobe ReadersX users to save filled forms without enabling them to have access to the additional features as highlighting etc?

Hi, Is it possible to enable Adobe ReadersX users to save filled forms without enabling them to have access to the additional features as highlighting etc?

You can do that with individual pdf files using Adobe Acrobat to set the security.
In Acrobat go to File>Properties>Security. Choose password security as the security method then choose "restrict editing and printing of the document..." and under "Changes allowed" choose "Filling in form fields and signing existing signature fields".

Usually this points to having some kind of earlier trial version still installed on your system. However without more details you are not likely to find an answer. Try this for a start:

Have you opened Photoshop or any other Adobe app that Bridge works with?  You need to do this if you've upgraded PS or just signed up for CC.

  • FAQ: What features use the GPU and how do I troubleshoot GPU issues?

    Photoshop CS6 GPU FAQ
    Introduction
This document provides a quick reference guide to video card usage in Photoshop.  Some features require a compatible video card to work; if the video card or its driver is defective or unsupported, those features will not work at all.  Other features use the video card for acceleration and if the card or driver is defective those features will run more slowly.
    Mercury Graphics Engine
The Mercury Graphics Engine (MGE) represents features that use video card, or GPU, acceleration. In Photoshop CS6, this new engine delivers near-instant results when editing with key tools such as Liquify, Warp, Lighting Effects and the Oil Paint filter. The new MGE delivers unprecedented responsiveness for a fluid feel as you work.
MGE is new to Photoshop CS6, and uses both the OpenGL and OpenCL frameworks. It does not use the proprietary CUDA framework from nVidia.
In order to use MGE, you must have a supported video card and updated driver. If you do not have a supported card, performance will be degraded. In most cases the acceleration is lost and the feature runs in the normal CPU mode. However, there are some features that will not work without a supported video card.
GPU features added in Photoshop CS6
Adaptive Wide Angle Filter (compatible video card required)
Liquify (accelerated by compatible video card with 512MB VRAM, GPU mode unavailable on Windows XP)
Oil Paint (compatible video card required)
Warp and Puppet Warp (accelerated by compatible video card, GPU mode unavailable on Windows XP)
Field Blur, Iris Blur, and Tilt/Shift (accelerated by compatible video
card supporting OpenCL, GPU mode unavailable on Windows XP)
Lighting Effects Gallery (compatible video card required with 512MB
    VRAM, unavailable on Windows XP)
New 3D enhancements (3D features in Photoshop require a compatible video card with 512MB VRAM, unavailable on Windows XP):
    Draggable Shadows
    Ground plane reflections
    Roughness
    On-canvas UI controls
    Ground plane
Liqht widgets on edge of canvas
    IBL (image based light) controller

    GPU/OpenGL preferences in Photoshop CS6
The advantages of using a compatible video card (GPU) with Photoshop are that you can experience better performance and more features.   Problems can occur if you have an older video card with limited VRAM or if you use other programs at the same time as Photoshop that use the GPU.
Choose Edit > Preferences (Windows) or Photoshop > Preferences (Mac OS).
In the Performance panel, make sure Use Graphics Processor is selected in GPU Settings.
Click Advanced Settings and specify the following options:
    Mode > Basic
    Mode > Normal
Mode > Advanced Provides the benefits of Normal mode as well as newer OpenGL advances that can result in improved performance.
Use Graphics Processor to Accelerate Computation
Use OpenCL Uses the GPU to accelerate the new blur filters (Field Blur, Iris Blur, and Tilt-Shift) – OpenCL will only be available on newer GPUs that support OpenCL v1.1 or higher
Anti-Alias Guides And Paths Allows the GPU hardware to smooth the edges of drawn guides and paths.
30 Bit Display (Windows only) Allows Photoshop to display 30 bit data directly to screen on video cards that support it
    Quick GPU Troubleshooting Steps
You can experience problems such as artifacts, errors, and crashes if there are incompatibilities between Photoshop and the display components that access the GPU.
If you experience crashes, incorrectly rendered windows or objects, redraw issues, or performance issues while running Photoshop, first determine whether OpenGL is causing the problem.
    Turn off OpenGL.
Choose Edit > Preferences (Windows) or Photoshop > Preferences (Mac OS).
In the Performance panel, uncheck Use Graphics Processor. Click OK.
Restart Photoshop, and perform the same function.
If the problem recurs while OpenGL Drawing is disabled, OpenGL is not the cause. For additional troubleshooting, see Troubleshoot system errors and freezes | Adobe software on Windows (cpsid_82252) or Troubleshoot system errors and freezes | Adobe software on Mac OS 10.x (cpsid_82414).
If the problem resolves, proceed with the rest of the troubleshooting steps to fix OpenGL.
Make sure that you're using the latest update of Photoshop.Updates fix bugs and issues.
Update the display driver.Updated display drivers can fix many issues, such as crashing, incorrectly rendered objects, and performance problems. Determine what video card you have and go directly to the manufacturer's website (nVidia or ATI/AMD) and download the latest driver. (Note: Simply doing a Windows Update is does not guarantee you are using the latest driver. You must go directly to the nVideo or ATI/AMD websites to get the absolute latest driver.) After you update your driver, turn on Use Graphics Processor in Photoshop preferences.
    Reset preferences.
Resetting preferences returns OpenGL settings to their default status. Reset Photoshop preferences by pressing and holding Shift+Ctrl+Alt (Windows) or Shift+Option+Command (Mac OS) immediately after you start Photoshop.
Click Yes when asked if you want to delete the Adobe Photoshop Settings File.
Retry the function that caused the problem.
Change the OpenGL mode to Basic.
Setting the OpenGL mode to Basic uses the least amount of GPU memory and the most basic GPU feature set.
    Close all documents.
Choose Edit > Preferences (Windows) or Photoshop > Preferences (Mac OS)
In the Performance panel, click the GPU Settings Advanced Settings button.
    Choose Mode > Basic
    Restart Photoshop.
If this solution resolves the problem, switch to Normal mode. See if the issue recurs. If the issue recurs, return to Basic mode.
Note:  If you’re changing GPU preferences to troubleshoot a problem, re-launch Photoshop after each change.
If you are using more than one video adapter, remove the additional cards.
Multiple video adapters can cause problems with GPU accelerated or enabled features in Photoshop. It's best to connect two (or more) monitors into one video adapter. If you have to use more than one video adapter, make sure that they are the same make and model. Otherwise, crashes and other problems can occur in Photoshop.
Note: Using two video adapters does not enhance Photoshop's performance.
    Check your Cache Levels setting.
If you've set your Cache Levels to 1 in Photoshop preferences, you can experience performance issues with GPU features. Reset Cache Levels to the default setting, which is 4.
Choose Edit > Preferences > Performance (Windows) or Photoshop > Preferences (Mac OS)
In the Performance panel, choose Cache Levels > 4.
    The GPU Sniffer
To help guard against Photoshop crashes related to bad GPU hardware or drivers, Photoshop employs a small program called the GPU Sniffer. Every time Photoshop is launched, Photoshop launches the sniffer. The sniffer runs rudimentary tests of the GPU and reports the results to Photoshop. If the sniffer crashes or reports a failure status to Photoshop, Photoshop will not use the GPU. The Use Graphics Hardware checkbox in the Performance panel of the Preferences will be unchecked and disabled.
The first time the sniffer fails, Photoshop will display a dialog indicating that it has detected a problem with the GPU. On subsequent launches the dialog will not appear unless the Photoshop preferences are reset.
If the user corrects the problem, either by replacing the video card or by updating the driver, then the sniffer will pass on the next launch and the Use Graphics Hardware checkbox will be enabled and returned to its previous state (enabled or disabled).
Tested video cards for Photoshop CS6
Adobe tested the following video cards before the release of Photoshop CS6. This document lists the video card by series. While the minimum amount of VRAM supported on video cards for Photoshop CS6 is 256MB, some features require 512MB of VRAM to be enabled.
Note: Adobe tested laptop and desktop versions of the following cards. Be sure to download the latest driver for your specific model. (Laptop and desktop versions have slightly different names.)
    nVidia GeForce 8000, 9000, 100, 200, 300, 400, 500 series
    nVidia Quadro 400, 600, 2000, 4000 (Mac & Win), CX, 5000, 6000
    AMD/ATI Radeon 2000, 3000, 4000, 5000, 6000, 7000 series
    AMD/ATI FirePro 3800, 4800, 5800, 7800, 8800, 9800, 3900, 4900, 5900, 7900
Intel Intel HD Graphics, Intel HD Graphics P3000, Intel HD Graphics P4000
Note: ATI X1000 series and nVidia 7000 series cards are no longer being tested and are not officially supported in CS6 – some basic GL functionality may be available for both these cards.
Note: 3Dand some Open GL features are disabled on Windows XP, as stated on : http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/photoshopcs6/

"This document enabled extended features in Adobe Reader.  The document has been changed since it was created and use of extended features is no longer available.  Please contact the author for the original version of this document."
The form has not been changed and as mentioned, I am the author.  Any solutions to allow user in Reader X to fill-in form?  Do I need to upgrade to Acrobat Pro X?

I am having same problem with a 2011 year tax PDF fill in form I JUST got from IRS website.  The actual form is the 2011 8829.
I can not open the PDF from the web browser or if I save it to my local drive.
I have not been able to open it at all ... thus I have made NO changes.
    I am running Windows 7 64 bit, Adobe Reader X version 10.1.4.
