Enable CMSS-3D with 5.1 Surround Sound Headphon

Hey everyone I heared of a post or something on another site that a creative rep or soemthing said that you should have CMSS-3D off when you have the X-FI configured for 5. speakers. Is this true? I did a search of the forums and didnt find an answer. So please someone answer! thanks!

It depends on what you're doing. When you have 5. headphones connected, you should set up the card as if you are using 5. speakers. The CMSS-3DHeadphone option is for when you are using standard stereo headphones, and the speaker selection is set to "Headphones".
You can enable CMSS with your 5. headphones (but set the speaker selection to 5., that way you get the right CMSS setting), so you get 5. from sources like music, for instance. Music is normally only stereo.

  • X-fi and surround sound headphones

I'm interested in buying the X-Fi XtremeMusic, but I've been told that it's not good with surround sound headphones. I'm using Genius 5.1 headphones. They do have a switch that enables me to only use 2.1 if I want.
Will the X-Fi work with these?

I don't see why not. They would probably need bass redirection enabled with the +15dB subwoofer boost as one way to get correct channel volumes. This very long thread:
    http://forums.creative.com/creativel...essage.id=8533
might give you some useful insights.
Did whoever told you they weren't good tell you anything about why or in what way?

  • Surround Sound Headphones?

Has anyone here tried surround sound headphones with the SPDIF output on an nForce mobo? If so, how do they work with games?

Setting the panel to headphones is supposed to cause Windows to do something to the output of the sound.  I can't perceive any difference when I shift the setting about.  I've begun to wonder if the setting is only applicable to analog sound cards.
Furthermore an external DSP is required to use S/PDIF.  At minimum you need a DAC to convert the digital signal back into analog.  You also have to remember that any DD sound output from the S/PDIF must be decoded before it goes to the DAC.  Since it appears that the nForce encodes any sound that passes through it, this too would make a DSP required.
I should have been a bit clearer on the external DSP. I realize a DD decoder is necessary when using the SPDIF output, but a DSP for additional HRTF would not necessarily be needed (if I'm understanding this correctly).
    Quote
The adjustment of these settings along side Pro Logic tend to create the necessary HRTF output through headphones.  That's for DD content any ways.  3D Sound API's acheive their goal by processing before output through the S/PDIF or analog outs.
But is the 3D Sound API's sound processing "preserved" when encoded to Dolby Digital? In other words, does the EAX and/or A3D positional infomation remain after it is encoded to DD?

Yes, exactly! But for games  as well as DVDs?
    Good info Ryu! Thanks!!

  • Can't connect with 7.1 surround sound enabled in w...

I recently got myself a Siberia Elite Prism, which has been working just fine with skype up until today.
Whenever my windows playback settings are set to 7.1 Surround sound, it simply won't connect me to anyone on skype, giving me a "There was a problem with your playback device" or something along those lines. As soon as I set it to stereo, it works fine.
    - Now thing is, my audio works just fine outside of skype, so there shouldn't be any problems there.
    I've tried:
    - Restarting my computer
    - Reinstalling skype
    - Reinstalling my drivers
    - Switching USB port
Nothing seems to work - would very much like to know if there's a way to fix this for me :/

  • Video with 5.1 surround sound only shows up as center left and right in FCPX?

When I import a video that already has 5.1 surround sound, the clip will show up in only center left and right, according to the audio meters.  Other files with surround sound will sometimes play in only the center and left channel.  I know the file has 5.1 surround sound because it plays fine through my home theater and it shows there's 6 channels in video information....It just doesn't play right in Final Cut.

Make sure your Project Audio and Render Properties/Audio Channels are set for Surround:
You then need to define your audio stems in the Inspector based on channel, like this:

  • Problem with 5.1 surround sound

I have a Pavilion p7-1414 with all of the standard hardware. I just got a set of Logitech Z506 speakers and the volume will randomly shift up and down. I have tried reconfiguring the speakers in the control panel and made sure the wires are held in place. I think it might be a problem with the sound card but i didn't notice it with m old speakers (Logitech Z-320).

    Hey xnathanmeyerx,
Please select Line-In of Sound Blaster Omni Surround 5.1 as the default Input for the Mac computer. It can be configured at Sound under the Mac System Preferences. I hope this helps.

I've created my first 5.1 FCPX project and would like to play on an Apple TV2 as well as a Windows 7 HTPC running Windows Media Center.  I've been trolling this and FCPX discussions and still having much difficulty.  I've exported Quicktime movie using ProRes 422, opened in Compressor 4 and verified that file has six channel audio.  I seletect target, HD for Apple Devices, Device Apple TV HD and select include 5.1 sound.
Here is the summary for output:

              AAC encoder quality: high
              Data rate: 128 Kbps
    Include Dolby 5.1 Audio track
Compatible with Mac, PC, iPad, Apple TV (1st gen.), Apple TV (2nd gen.) and iPhone 4,
Resulting m4v file only has 2 channels as seen in get file info and when playing on the ATV2 and HTCP.
    What am I missing here?
    TIA
    DJK

I had the same problem - my findings:
    - source has 6 channels --> verified via inspector in Compressor
I create 1 Job (in compressor) with exactly this source:
    - one with (a modified) "HD for Appledevices..." giving a *.m4v and "Include 5.1" checked - output is stereo
    - one with Quicktime - H.264 + Audio = 5.1  giving a *.mov that does have the 5.1 track
So I consider case #1 as a bug in Compressor 4.02 or the Settings-profile.
Anoying - because I am almost sure it worked in the past!

  • ITunes fails to play hand-made movies with AC-3 surround sound

Recently I noticed that iTunes isn't any longer able to play my self-encoded movies with an AC-3 audio track. Playing the movie with the first audio track (AAC stereo) is no problem but switching to the second audio track (AC3) just causes iTunes to stop. This effect appears not while playing movies bought at the iTunes Store.
Is this a bug or a "feature" introduced by Apple to force us to buy movies in the iTunes store instead of encoding our DVDs?

I have the same problem. The OSX10.6.7 is the culprit. All was
well before update, after, got the problem you described. As yet,
there doesn't seem to be any solution.
It appears that 10.6.7 fixed a problem of stalling and or studdering
with iTunes purchased HD material, but it broke imported content
    ac-3/dolby material.

  • Surround sound headphone solution for iMac in Bootcamp/Windows 7

    Hi all
I have a 27" iMac which, unfortunately, in Windows, outputs only in stereo (I have NO idea why).  It has no PCI option that I aware of.
I like to game in Windows 7 (dual booted) and have in my possession:
    Creative X-Fi USB 5.1 soundcard (http://us.store.creative.com/Sound-Blaster-XFi-Surround-5.1/M/B0017QQQAE.htm);
    Turtle Beach Earforce DSS;
    AKG K271 Studio headphones.
I am using the CMSS-3D software with the X-Fi and getting okay results.  I have also tried plugging in the Earforce DSS via the optical out on the X-Fi (with CMSS-3D off) and have two different results:
    Movies/DVDs, etc. the Earforce clicks into Dolby Digital mode;
Games (Dead Space, Metro 2033, etc.), I get only the Pro Logic light coming on.
I can't tell much difference between CMSS-3D and the Pro Logic on the Earforce so am debating getting rid of them both (not the headphones, I use them for music) and going for another solution, as I don't think I can really get a very good performance from these.  I previously owned Astro Mixamp and A40 headset and thought they sounded fantastic on 360, really helped on Battlefield Bad Company 2, etc.  What I am using now just doesn't seem to measure up.
So, any thoughts?  Logitech G35?  One of the Sennheiser ones?
    Cheers!
    Steve

I have a G35 and the surround works great in Windows 7 under Boot Camp.  The headphones will also work in a basic way with OS X, but you'll only get stereo since there is no Mac version of the software

  • FCS3- working blue-ray with surround sound ?

Hi, I'm trying to solve the problem with surround and Blue-ray.
*Could anyone confirm that FCS3 can output working Blue-Ray with 5.1 Surround Sound, please?*
The surround sound is really important for me, I am able to make Blue-ray now via Toast, but it converts the surround to stero). As soon someone confirms it works, I'm going to upgrade... Thanks!

The only things I noted when I made my first own test, was that even though my FCP7 timeline was set properly to output the 6 channels, when I went to compressor 3.5 to produce both the H264 and the AC3 (with 6 channels), after the Blu ray disk was burnt, the audio was not playing correctly.
I fixed the problem by going from FCP7 to Compressor using the new function called "send to compressor", instead of using a self contained QT movie (which is my usual workflow).
In this specific case I found that it solved my problem and my second attempt to produce the Blu ray disk was ok, the audio played as expected on my Dolby receiver.
    Regards,
    Armando.

  • No 5.1 surround sound on X-Fi Titanium (intern

I am trying to get my X-Fi Titanium card on a new Dell XPS 420 computer to play 5. surround sound. The setup is simple. Optical out from the sound card going into optical in of Onkyo HT-S400 receiver. First I want to make sure the couple of assumptions I have are correct:
. SPDIF out means the digital optical connection from the optical out in the sound card.
    2. If CMSS 3D is enabled and a stereo mp3 is played on the computer, ALL 5 speakers should have sound (a replication of stereo sound but played on all 5 speakers).
I see two devices in the Sounds icon -> Playback devices from system tray. Creative SB x-Fi speakers (This is default device and going to properties, default is stereo speakers though it can be configured to make it 5. channel but doing a test on it, the fi've sounds (LR, Center, FR, RR, RL come out of only the front two speakers) and SPDIF out (configure option is disabled and going to Properties -> Advanced it shows different 6 and 24 bit combinations of 2 channels, NO 5. channels available). I have "Gi've applications exclusi've control of this device" checked for both.
After changing the properties to 5. on Creative SB X-Fi speakers, if I go to Creative Audio Console (blue colored app) and do a channel test, the 5 sounds again come out of only the front two speakers even though the set up says 5. channels since I changed to that in system tray).
The only way all 5 speakers work is when I am playing a BluRay disc using PowerDVD. I had to explicitly make the SPDIF Out the default device and then select SPDIF from the Audio Setting within PowerDVD. Even then though it does produce 5. sound for the prei'vews before the movie (and once for the movie itself), the 5. gets disabled right after the FBI anti piracy warning now just before the movie begins.
I don't see an option for SPDIF pass through in Audio Console (I think) mentioned in the forum posts. Can someone please shed some light on this? Is this a driver issue (since I don't see 5. by default on Creative SB X-Fi speakers as well as SPDIF out -> Advanced) or am I missing some other setting? . My goal is to get sound from all 5 speakers for regular mp3's/music through CMSS and true 5. digital surround sound consistently from Blu-Ray discs using PowerDVD/any other software I might try.
Thanks for reading and I'll look forward to hearing from the helpful forum members!

So if these aren't Dolby pro logic tracks I am a bit confused here. Also, according to your explanation: once I change the language track using the menu from atv2, how can I ever reactivate the ac3 track if it does not show up in the menu?
Dolby Pro Logic I (passive) and II (active) audio is encoded in stereo normally as AAC tracks which do show up in the TV2 Chapter/Audio menu while I have never seen any AC3 audio track show up in the TV2 Chapter/Audio menu. As to switching between AC3 (in the DD5.1 "Auto" or "On" mode) to any of the AAC language tracks, I simply set the DD5.1 mode switch to "Off" and the currently defaulted AAC language track automatically plays and can be switched to any other available AAC language track using the TV2 Chapter/Audio menu. Turning the DD5.1 option back "on" or to the "Auto" mode re-engages AC3 audio playback on my system.
However, I have read about "only one 5.1 track" elsewhere (can't remember where). Do you have more info on this?
Have only tested one multi-AC3 track test file with English as the first DD5.1 language. As soon as I finish posting this, will go back and create a test file with English and French AC3 DD5.1 audio tracks reversed to see I can get the French audio to play. (Had previously tried changing the default menu and audio language settings on the TV2 device to see if that would change the AC3 DD5.1 language being played but it had no effect. If changing the AC3 track order also has no effect, will try changing the settings on the iTunes computer to see if that may control which AC3 language track is streamed to the TV2 device.

  • Surround sound+ps3+pc+22" monitor

My question is: How is it possible to connect all of these devices? I have a sound blaster Z sound card with 6.1 surround sound hooked up to my computer, which is connected to my 22" monitor. Plus I have my PS3 connected to the back of my monitor but it runs off the stupid speakers on the monitor which sound crappy. I currently have the 6 speakers connected to the sound card. I'de like to run both the ps3 and the pc with surround sound and not have to unplug the speakers from the pc and to the ps3 and so on. Please help me with this issue someone. I also have a 7900 gt oc bgf nvidia graphics card if this some how also helps.

Most of those "surround" headsets only have two channels, and the "surround" sound is emulated by the driver, which I guess does not have a linux version.
This is probably the reason why you only see a stereo device - it's what it is on the the hardware level. What the linked "solution" does is, it tells pulseaudio to use 8 channels per default and  enables remixing both regular channels and LFE. This leads to pulseaudio downmixing the 8 channels to 2 to match the numbers of your speakers. Essentially, this is what the windows driver should be doing, so if it sounds different, it's probably a matter of different implementation/enhancements the dolby driver includes.
Bottom line: you can't have 8 channels on a device which only has 2 channels on the hardware level. This is why I went for a Roccat Kave back then - it has 6 physical speakers, 3 on each side.

  • How do I convert analogue 5.1 surround sound into a digital signal? (Pioneer SE-DIR800C headphon

I understand that my SB Audigy 2 card will only output 5. sound from games through its 3 analogue connectors. How do I convert this analogue signal into a digital one? What hardware do I need to purchase?
I have read the thread on "Digital Connections, SPDIF and Dolby Digital Info", and also I've thoroughly read the "Creative Speaker Connectivity Guide".
The reason I ask is that I have just bought a pair of Pioneer SE-DIR800C Surround Sound headphones. This are supposedly fantastic for recreating surround sound on headphones because there is a clever little decoder box. They accept a DTS / Dolby Digital signal via the digital co-axial and optical inputs, and there is a single analogue input which only accepts stereo sound.
My XBox and PS2 will output true digital 5. sound via an optical cable and I am confident this will work perfectly with these headphones. I'm really looking forward to playing Halo in surround sound! But for gaming on my PC, I'll be limited to just an analogue stereo signal. Well, unless I can find some device that will convert my SoundBlaster's analogue 5. outputs into a digital signal, which I can then plug into the little decoder box for these headphones.
    So, back to my question:
What hardware do I need to buy to convert an analogue 5. signal (via 6 x RCA or 3 x 3.5mm stereo ) into a true digital signal (via optical or co-axial SP/DIF)? Is it some type of headphone amplifier I need? If possible, please recommend makes & models of equipment.

    Thanks stefan
OK, basically I have found 3 options for getting digital 5. out of a PC:
    a) Creative DTS-60 (approx $90). This converts the SB's analogue into digital, but it's not available in the UK and it also introduces a noticeable 50ms sound delay. Also, who wants an extra box hanging out of their PC?
    b) Buy a new sound card which has Dolby Digital Li've output. For example, ) BlueGears HDA X Mystique 7., or 2) Turtle Beach Montego DDL, or 3) Terratec Aureon 7. PCI (NOT the Space, FireWire or Uni'verse cards). I couldn't find the first two available in the UK so I have just ordered the Terratec card from Komplett.
    c) Buy a new motherboard that has built-in Dolby Digital Li've output, for example the ABIT Fatalty AA8XE. Unfortunately my PC is only just over year old and I'm not quite ready to replace it.
I hope this info is useful for people. Maybe Creative will start making a card with DDL output too.Message Edited by NinjaHeretic on 2-22-2005 08:46 AM

  • Some SD popular TV shows now come in 5.1 surround sound!

I just realised that some Standard Definition (SD) popular TV shows like Prison Break and Heroes now come with 5.1 surround sound. Thanks to my sound equipment. Usually, I will see sound indicator displaying PCM. Was doing a preview of the two above mentioned shows and I noticed that the sound indicator switched to *Dolby Digital*. Went to my Mac and open the files with QuickTime and there a surround sound track in addition to the usual stereo track. Thought 5.1 surround sound was only for HD TV Shows. Cool!

Yes I agree, no matter how much fiddling in ITunes, Quicktime Pro, Audio MIDI Setup and Sound in Preferences, I cannot get the 5.1 sound directed to my sound system in the same way the DVD Player software that comes with Leopard does it.
Surely if it's an AC3 licensing issue, they've already licensed it for DVD Player, so iTunes on Mac should just work (like most Apple stuff does). Apple have had several years to fix this one, I can only assume it's marked as "Won't fix" for some unknown reason. I'm living in hope that they get it sorted for Snow Leopard (QuickTime X etc).

  • Having trouble using my 5.1 surround sound speaker system and can't configure itunes to use it

With my Logitech Surround Sound Speakers Z506 I am listening to music with itunes and i have 5 speakers total with a subwoofer, the configuration is two front, one center, two rear, and a subwoofer. The front , center and subwoofer are fine but the rear pair speakers do not have any playback with them. I am wondering if you don't mind helping me troubleshoot this problem.
Thank you have a nice day
    Cole

Well I'm not using Vista I'm using XP SP2 and I have the same problem.
On the windows sound control panel there is a button called speaker volume. when you click on it you get a bunch of sliders with channels -8. Ive discovered that if I move the master sound control in any of the Creative Sound modes software Entertainment/Audio Creation or Gaming the channel sliders in the windows control panel numbered 3-7 all go to zero which stops the surround sound working. It leaves channels and 2 and 8 alone which can be changed with the sound control in the creative software.
Even checking move all the slides together option on the windows control panel is cancelled as soon as I twitch the main sound control. It's driving me nuts. I keep thinking I must be missing something really obvious here but alas I can't think what.
Ive tried lots of different solutions to no avail. Interestingly when I tried to use the autodriver update thing on the creative web site it said that i am using Vista and you'll have to download manually. Which I did and still didnt resolve my problem.
Sorry no solutions just more problems lets hope someone can help!
Edit - Just discovered - I have XFi Pro if I use the I/O Console volume dial it works fine, but if I use the software volume control it all goes wrong. Think I posted in the wrong thread as well as this is vista but it just seemed so relevant.
