Enable DMA on a raid arry?

I am just wondering if there is a way to enable Dma access for a raid arry?  I am able to set the primary and secondary IDE channels to DMA or PIO, but have not found any settings to enable DMA for the raid arry. I have two WD 80 gig drives set up in a raid 0 and was just wondering if you can setup DMA for the arry?
MSi 845PE MAX2
ATI 8500DV AGP card
Maxtor 160 gig on IDE1
DVD rom master/ DVD-RW slave IDE2
2 WD 80 gig drives on seperate raid controllers 3&4

My guess is that it is enable already. But, to play safe, install this:

  • K8N Neo2 strange behavior with SATA enable DMA transfers

K8N Neo2 with Maxtor 6B250S0 250GB SATA drive on SATA3 and Maxtor 6B200S0 200GB SATA drive on SATA4.  No RAID.  I use SATA3/4 because I have read that SATA1/2 are not locked with the PCI bus.  I do overclock a bit.     I have SATA1/2 disabled in the bios.
The 250GB drive is for my applications, and the 200GB drive is for holding backups.  I use Drive Image 2002 to create image files of my partitions.  To create an image of my main partition, Drive Image boots to DOS.  I noticed that the drive performance under DOS was slow.  After a bit of testing, I discovered that enabling DMA transfers for SATA fixes the problem.  This makes sense, because under Windows the IDE drivers provide DMA access, but under DOS the hardware itself needs to provide DMA function.  But here is what's strange... I have to enable DMA for both SATA channels!     So even though I am using only one of the channels, and have the other disabled in the bios, I have to enable DMA transfers for both channels in order to have good performance under DOS.
This occurs under both 1.4 and 1.5 bios versions.  This isn't a big problem and appears to be just a bios bug of some sort, but I thought I would post my findings here in case someone else is getting poor performance under DOS.
BTW, does anyone know why these options default to disabled in the bios?

BTW, does anyone know why these options default to disabled in the bios?
It makes sense when windows and the drivers provide it .
But not e.g when installing an OS or doing dos based or windows preinstall enviroment imaging .
I have also thought it's strange they have it disabled at default .
Atleast they should be enabled with "load optimized defaults" .
Just something we have to be aware off i guess .
This is one of the bios entrys i always ajust when starting with a default bios load .
Nice tip about having both enabled , wasn't aware of that .
Just been having the habit of enabling both 1/2 and 3/4 each time even if ports are used or not .

  • Can't enable DMA on cd rom drive

    Hey,
How could I get my CD ROM drive, recognized as /dev/sr0, to get Direct Memory Access enabled?
The reason for this is when I use mplayer to read from an audio CD, the cache gets emptied pretty fast (and without it, audio is too choppy to listen to), and I'm guessing enabling DMA will make it run smoothly.
After some searching I tried 'hdparm':
    hdparm -d /dev/sr0
    And I get:
    /dev/sr0:

    Any help would be appreciated!

  • Can't enable ACLs on a RAID volume

    Hi all,
I have OSX 10.4.11 running on an Xserve G5 ppc. There are 2 Xserve RAID volumes attached by fibre channel.
I've been having issues recently with permissions: some users are creating or modifying files/folders and other users in the same group are then unable to access them. Viewing the permissions shows that group access is set to 'None'. I can correct this in the 'Sharing' section of WGM but that doesn't resolve the underlying issue.
I want to use ACLs to control access to data on the 2 RAID volumes, one of which also contains the users' network accounts. Unfortunately the 'Enable Access Control Lists' tick box is greyed out so I cannot activate them. On the other RAID volume all three tick boxes are available.
    Why might this be?
    John.

Found the answer. The volume was not correctly formatted. I copied the data, reformatted the volume, copied back the data and enabled ACLs.

Give system specs as well as the OS you are using. As erydos stated XP does this automatically. If in bios you only have "Auto" and "Disabled," choose "Auto." If you are using XP and want to see if you are using DMA, go to device manager and check the properties of each of the IDE channels under IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers. You'll see a tab labled "Advanced Settings." Mine has for the following for the Secondary IDE channel(optical drives)
    Device 0
    Device Type...................Auto Detection
    Transfer Mode................DMA if Available
    Current Transfer Mode....Ultra DMA 4
    Device 1
    Device Type...................Auto Detection
    Transfer Mode................DMA if Available
    Current Transfer Mode....Ultra DMA 2

  • Disk Utilities -- how to enable Verify on XServe RAID

Could someone please post details on how to get Disk Utilities' Verify function to be enabled for use on XServe RAID?
When I try it, DU reports "disk is busy", and wants me to "unmount" the drive I've selected. The unmount button fails, and separately using the umount command appears to work but Verify still gives same message.
    What am I missing?

What you're missing is that there are files on the
XServe RAID that are in use. You'll need to quit
whatever processes/applications are using files on
the RAID before Disk Utility can repair it.
Thanks for the comment, but how do I solve this:
    a) How do I determine who or what has files open on the affected partition?
    b) Do I need to make sure the entire RAID set is not in use, or just the one partition ("Volume" as it appears in Finder) I want to run DU on?

I tried a option to run a VB script to change the DMA status but no luck..

    Hello suneel
Sorry to interrupt this discussion but I feel it goes somehow in wrong direction.
If I understand you right you just want to install WXP on your Satellite A300. Am I right about that?
On this forum you can find, I believe, hundreds of threads with precise description how to do this.
What you need is WXP installations CD with integrated SATA driver.
Check please this page . There you can find nice description how to find SATA drivers. At the end you can also find link to guide for "Slipstreaming SATA driver into WinXp boot cd using nLite".
When the WXP is installed just continue with WXp driver installation. If your notebook is WXP supported you can find them on Toshiba download page.
    Hope this helps.
    Good luck!

  • Can't enable DMA mode with JMicron controller

Working with this 975x is like pulling teeth.
Why does the secondary PATA port have to be the Jmicron POS?!  How can I get it to just use the intel controller?
DMA won't work for my DVD drive hooked up to the secondary ATA.  I have it set to DMA if available, and it keeps using PIO mode.

Quote from: dejanos on 21-November-06, 21:28:38
I suggest that you read all other post about the JMicron issues where lots of things are explained .We have already discussed about showing DMA under SCSI.SCSI doesn't inform you about the DMA.It simply works,or not.
So it's that simple,if your DVD/RW drive read an burn fast, then everything is OK. Don't worry about the DMA.
Yes, I can confirm that also, for what it is worth. I set up my new board some days ago but hadn't really tested the DVD drive yet. Although I felt and suspected everything was normal, I was very concerned after seeing and reading the problem threads on these boards. I have now tested it with a full 4.7GB burn and it took 13-14 minutes on a 4x DVD+RW, which is completely normal. Also, on checking the Nero log I see it reports "DMA: OFF" which is clearly false, but which a lot of people are complaining/worried about. Copying between hard drives (see specs) 'seems' to go at the right speed too. Windows reports 2 minutes when I dragged 3.12Gb across (quick test to see time although I cancelled it half way - not sure of the maths but seems about right from experience)
Obviously Nero (and probably other applications) are NOT able to detect the true access mode of IDE drives under the JMicron controller.

  • P985 Platinum DMA issues

Does anyone here know if there's some trick to enabling DMA on this board?  I am having 30min+ burn times for my cds!  I look at the secondary IDE controller and it says PIO mode.  When I switch it to DMA if available and reset my computer, it still reads PIO only.  I installed the INF drivers, the JMicron drivers, uninstalled the controllers then reinstalled the drivers.  I just can't seem to get it to work!  I don't think I've ever run into this issue before.  Here are my specs:

Do you have any ideas how i can enable DMA with this card and remove this messages from booting?
    Thank you all very much
    andieh

I have three CF cards installed in my computer, each is an adata 266x UDMA capable 8GB.
I utilize IDE to CF card adapters for utilizing CF cards in my system or SATAII to CF cards adapters.
I obtain 45MB/sec sequential speed on all three adapters.
These are UDMA capable CF cards, not just DMA.
Currently, I utilize all three CF cards in a raid0 arrangement using a dual pci-e to SATAII adapter to two CF adapters and a single pci-e adapter to SATAII and a CF adapter as well.  The three perform at 45MB/S and 130 MB/S in the raid array.
Each card is identified as an sd(x) card.
Kernel is the latest to date.
DMA utilization may limit your speed to less than 20MB/s and IDE operation with an adapter from pci performs well with UDMA.
I realize I haven't addressed your particular problem directly but I find that in the latest kernels a pci to IDE adapter permits full performance from CF cards whereas using the mobo IDE slot does not...probably due to libata inclusion in the kernel.  YMMV

  • Raid 1 setup NEO2 Platinum

I am having questions about the BIOS settings for a RAID 1 mirroring array.
I went through the manual and tried this once....I used to create the array, which shows as 'healthy'...I have the SATA drives plugged into sata3 and sata4
QUESTION 1...Since this 2 disk array is to be my boot disk, do I configure the array to 'Yes' under the set boot column?  I assumed yes...
QUESTION 2...In BIOS, what are the settings for the RAID mode...In integrated peripherals, in IDE function setup...I have sata1/sata2 DMA transfer and sata 3/sata4DMA transfer disabled (is this supposed to be enabled?)
QUESTION 3.... In BIOS, ONboard device...sata 1/sata 2 and sata 3/sata 4 are all enabled...in Raid config...IDE Raid is enabled, sata1-4 are all enabled....Is this correct?
The reason I ask is because I booted with CDROM winxp pro, pressed F6 to load raid drivers on floppy, press s and loaded drivers, and again for the second set...then the disk formatted to a single partition, and installed 100% of the files (including the ones on the floppy)...then while I was away for a minute, and came back the screen was on the (press S part again...like it booted off of the cdrom again (although i hadnt pressed f6) I pressed enter to continue and it booted back to post....I dont have windows xp loading off of the drives like its not booting an OS...the OS didnt load like windows normally does (with minutes left...etc) so I know that something messed up.
QUESTION 4...once this is done....is the boot priority set to hard drive going to be the raid 1 array that I configured? I am not there yet but ...
    THanks
    MZ

    OK..
I set the BIOS to the suggested settings (most were ok already)...I had followed the SATA link as suggested...that is what I had done already.  THese are 2 drives brand new system, never formatted.
What is happening now is, after and installing the drivers , and the screen shows windows setup at the top and at the bottom, "setup is starting windows" it is just hanging there...nothing has happened for 10 minutes..just hanging.  The 4 led's on the d-bracked are all green, the cdrom was working to load the initial boot off of winxp.
What do you suggest now?  I tried this 3 times now with the same ' hanging ' result.
I also deleted, and cleared the array and rebuilt the mirror..
By the way, my initial post still stands, the 1st time I did all of this this hang didnt happen and the formatting and file loading were successful, but then the sytem didnt begin installing the OS.
Please help...I RMA's an ASUS board and switched to this one hoping the setup would be easier...ouch
