Enable plug-ins in Safari

I was told that I should have enable plug-ins unchecked in safari preferences because of hackers. Do I need to do this?

You are referring to Flash and Java. If you need them, keep them activated. However, if you don't need them, it's better to uninstall them. To turn off Java, just go to Safari menu > Preferences > Security and untick "Enable Java".
The main problem with them is that they have a lot of security problems, so it's better not to use them. If you have to use them, just be careful and keep them updated to the latest version

Please help me to restore Plug ins on my Mac Book 10.6.8
This follows update today of Adobe Flash utility. What's going on?
I need access to playbacks on my facebooks and other sites.

I had the same problem after updating Flash to version 13 today.
From the Adobe Flash website I had to first find the uninstaller and uninstall Flash then I restarted my computer.
Then I went back to the Adobe Flash website and found the previous version of Flash (11.7) in the archive section and installed that and now Flash is working again (although I've gotten a couple of error messages I had to ignore for it to work).

Open System Preferences > Flash Player then select the Advanced tab.
Click Delete All under Browsing Data and Settings
    Not empty the Safari cache.
From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Advanced tab.
Select:  Show Develop menu in menu bar
Now click Develop from the menu bar. From the drop down menu click Empty Caches.
    Now try a video.

  • Safari is unchecking 'Enable Plug-ins' itself!  Anyone else?

I will go to a page, and find it telling me that I need whatever version of Flash is required. I will then click on Preferences to find that the 'Enable plug-ins' box is not checked, so I check the box to enable and close the Preference pane.
Then an hour or two will go by where I don't use Safari (4.0.3), but it remains open in the background. I will go to look at something, and see the message again. When I go back into Preferences I find that the box is once again unchecked.
Any ideas why this is happening, and more importantly -- how I can fix it?! It is getting to be a pain.
    Thanks,
    Jason

Move the com.apple.safari.plist file out of /user/Library/Preferences/ to the Desktop, quit Safari, relaunch it, reset preferences, quit and relaunch Safari, and see if the preferences stick. If not, create a new admin user account, log into it, and see if the problem reoccurs. If so, delete the moved file and mark the thread appropriately.

  • Enable Plug-ins check box never stays checked.

Often, when I open and use Safari, the Enable Plug-ins check box is unchecked (Preferences>Security>Web Content>Enable Plug-ins). I am so used to this happening that I normally go into preferences and check this box before surfing. Is there any way to keep this check box permanently checked?
    Thanks,
    Lou

    It's not an age thing.
You and I remember "older" methods, is all.
The Property List Editor (Developer tools) can inspect and edit a .plist file. The .plist (Property List get it?) method replaces older .prefs file format found in OS 9.
Since every app has a "start list" of preferences (default settings) each user can do different things with different apps. They hold everything from the size of a window, the fonts used, the playback settings, etc. and sometimes go "wonky".
Since a new set (.plist file) will be made when you delete an older version it's creation sets things back to "default".

  • Missing extensions/plug-ins for Safari.

So, I recently had a virus/malware scare and to take care of it (which I did) I got rid of all extensions/plug ins for Safari.
I've currently only got Adobe Flash Player, and nothing else which is really hindering me. I've looked all over but I can't find out what the plug-ins or extensions I need are.
The most recent issue was something about Audio Midi when I couldn't play an audio thing online while looking for guitar chords stuff.
After that gave it a shot by asking Apple, but the closest Apple store is too far to be worth driving to and I can't afford $50 or however much it is to get the info/links/whatever I need.

There's no need to install Safari extensions if you don't wan to, however, there might want to check out the extensions gallery. You may find something useful.
From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Safari Extensions ...
To avoid malware, open System Preferences > Security & Privacy > General
Make sure:  Mac App Store and identified developers  is selected.
If that area is grayed out, click the padlock icon to proceed.

    How do I enable plug-ins for InDesign CS2 - files won't open.
    I own CS2.
    I shouldn't have to buy CS6 InDesign.
How do I open CS 2 files and get the plug ins again.

Asking the same question over and over will not change the answer.

  • All Plug-Ins in Safari are not working... flash, windows media, quicktime.

Hello to anybody that might be able to help me,
None of my plug-ins are working. Flash, Quicktime, Windows Media etc. are doing nothing. When I go to nba.com for example, the whole top flash element is just not there.
When I go to help menu and look at installed plug-ins... it appears as if they are all there. Anyone seen this before?
    Thanks,
    James

Well... that was stupid... I just figured it out. Setting I just managed not to notice before. In preferences under security, I had to check "enable plug-ins". Don't know how it got unclicked, but anways, yeah.

  • Uninstalling plug-ins for Safari, but not Firefox

    Hi all,
I've been driving myself kind of nuts over this. Is there a way for a plug-in to be installed only for Firefox and not Safari? I like the built-in PDF reader in Safari, but I want the Schubert-IT PDF browser plug-in for Firefox. Both browsers share the "Internet Plug-Ins" folder, but it seems weird that we can't be selective in terms of which browser gets what.
If nothing else, is there maybe a Safari configuration file hiding somewhere that can be edited to exclude certain plug-ins?
    Thanks,
    Tim

The issue is that it's how you have it setup  for PDF files.
Right or control click a PDF file you have stored on the hard drive then click Get Info.
In the Get Info panel look for: Open with
All applications are set to open with a particular PDF viewer.

    Hey Ho Boys and Girls,
Every 5 mnutes my safari crashed and says its because of a plug in caled gamehouserestaurantrush plug in. I would like to get rid of this. I've been to preferences and gone to extensions but its completely blank.

    Hi ...
Could be the flashback trojan.. if it is, it's not difficult to remove.
Install this update >  Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 8
That should remove variants of the trojan. Restart your Mac after the update is installed, try Safari.
If it still crashes, run this removal tool >  Flashback Removal Tool - F-Secure Weblog : News from the Lab
If that didn't help at all, check out these folders >   ~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins  and  /Library/Internet Plug-Ins.
If you see that plugin, move it to the Trash.
When you post for help, please tell us which Mac OS X you have installed. The more details you provide, the easier to help you

  • Missing Plug-ins for Safari 4.0.3

I am receiving error messages from certain websites that state that the content contains MIME-type applications and suggests downloading an application such as Adobe Flash player, etc. I have tried to download Adobe Flash player several times but it is not showing up as an installed plug-in when I go to the help menu and click on "installed plug-ins". The subsequent window shows that no plug-ins are installed at all. I also have a Mac-Mini and Macbook that I have used to cross reference with and they have several plug-ins listed when I look at "installed plug-ins". I have already reinstalled Safari to no avail. Any suggestions as to why they might be missing on my iMac or any suggestions on how to restore them (Adobe, Shockwave, etc).

    Greetings,
Are you running Mac OS X 10.5.8 as your profile states? If not, update your profile so it's accurate. There is no reason you should be deleting or reinstalling Safari; that is not the problem. You already have Flash installed, so there is no reason to install it again, unless you were upgrading the version, which would then require you to uninstall it first.
Have you tried re-setting Safari, as well as using Disk Utility to Repair Disk Permissions and then restarting Safari to see if the problem continues? Have you tried creating a new User account and testing for this problem there? If not, do that, too.

  • Plug-ins for Safari?

    Hello
    I have a 'test' site here: www.proofreading4students.com/projects.asp
Please ignore the untidy layout - I am only concerned about loading the video correctly at this stage.
There is a video on the page (though it takes a while to download - not sure if that is because of the size of the video file or how to compress it, but any ideas are welcome).
I can see the video in IE and Chrome, but in Safari I get a 'Missing Plug-in' message in the video 'container'. This is the code that loads the video:
    <div class="content_image">
    <object type="application/x-shockwave-flash" data="Goldfish.swf" width="300" height="240">
    </object>
    </div>
What plug-ins do I require, please?
    Thanks!

If you were running a Mac the following would have been my answer, but like i said I am ignorant about similar voo-doo on Windows!
Two bugs, one affecting Apple's Mac platform and another attacking Microsoft's Windows, exploit certain Flash player vulnerabilities to install malware onto users' systems, reports ArsTechnica. While users of other operating systems like Linux have yet to report attacks, Adobe's advisory notes the exploit affects all platforms.
Designated as CVE-2013-0634, the first vulnerability targets the Safari and Firefox Web browsers running on OS X, and is also being used as a trojan to deploy Microsoft Word documents containing malware. For Mac users, the flaw affects Adobe Flash Player version 11.5.502.146 or earlier.
On March 1 Apple again blocked Flash Player for Lion and Mountain Lion:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5660
The Adobe Flash patch can be found on Adobe’s website, and users can visit this page to check if their software is the most curent version.
You should uninstall any previous version first, and repair permissions after installing the new version.
If you still get a ‘plug-ins blocked’ message:

  • Plug-Ins for Safari and Firefox

I'm a new MAC owner (as of last week as a matter of fact) so bear with me.......
I had to download Firefox since I got the message that Safari didn't support the new Yahoo Mail Beta.
Then I decided to check out my MACBook Pro's video capabilities by going to the CBS web page to watch The Unit (go to http://www.cbs.com/ and click 'Full Episodes'.....)
    I got the following error:
The page “CBS.com - Innertube” has content of MIME type “audio/x-pn-realaudio-plugin”. Because you don’t have a plug-in installed for this MIME type, this content can’t be displayed.
Can anyone help me find the appropriate plug-in? What additional plug-ins should I install while I'm at it (Active-X, Java, etc.)?
BTW, I get an error with Firefox as well telling me that additional plug-ins are required, but the automatic (Firefox) search tells me that no suitable plug-ins were found.
Mac Book Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Wow, I had no idea it would be that simple.
Normally with my PC, if an update was needed the error message would instruct to download the newest version of Flash, Real, etc.
I figured with the cryptic error message I got from Firefox and Safari that I needed some 'plug-in.'
    Thanks! Problem solved......
