"Enable Protected Mode at startup" stops printing to RightFax
I use a printer to print to RightFax. It uses a separate print processor to route the printer output to the RightFax Client. As long as I use RFPrint.dll for the print processor, AdobeReader 11.1 will not work with a printer using the custom print processor. The only way to get around this is to uncheck "Enable Protected Mode at startup." Is there a way to tell Adobe reader that this printer, or print processor is ok to print to?
Good point, Pat. My problem is that I am an engineer for OpenText and I do maintenance for the RightFax project. This does not just affect me. All of our customers that use RightFax with Adobe are affected by this. I would like to understand what Adobe does not like about our printer and fix that problem so that we do not have to tell all of our customers to disable Protected Mode. Also some of our customers feel that they want to leave protected mode on for better security and if they do, they cannot print to the RightFax Fax printer. So I need to know what is causing Adobe to reject our printer when Protected mode is on.

Cannot read a file using Acrobat SDK in Adobe Reader 11 when Enable Protected Mode is checked
I wrote a plugin using Acrobat SDK which reads a temporary file created by another program in TEMP folder. In Adobe 10, plugin can read the temporary file and everything works. In Adobe Reader 11, plugin fails to read the temporary file when Enable Protected Mode option is checked. When I uncheck this option, everything works fine. Our customers are concerned about disabling this option. Please let me know if there is a workaround for this issue without unchecking the option. Thank you.

Why you need to disable protected mode.
NOTE : Purpose of Reader XI Protected Mode is to keep your system safe from PDF based exploits and keeping protected mode OFF will leave your system vulnerable.

Acrobat Reader X Disable Protection mode
Hi All,
i need some help with this freaky Acrobat Reader X version.
We have currently ~1000 computers with different old versions of AR (form 6 to 9)
We need to upgrade to 10.0.1 version all PC's
Will use SCCM for distributing the package.
OK... everything here seems good but ... a lot of problems and erros appear.
First we've installed on test group of 10 pc's the AR 10.0.0
all users start complainig that they can't open the pdf's from our file servers.
Solution - bring the patch 10.0.1
After that all users start complaining that they can't print - Windows Error - Acrobat need to be closed !
Solution - Protection mode disabled.
My questions :
1. How can I distribute both the Package of Acrobat and the update together with SCCM
All my tries and reaings failed !!!

found we can do it 2 ways, 1. via registry entry, or 2. via an ADM.
sorry cannot remember the referenced posts for the fixes below...
we use the adm so that users cannot change it, and so that updates dont reset it.
note that the adm has only a few settings, and i dont know the code for any other settings.

Adobe Reader XI protected mode problem
I downloaded Reader XI and went to open a pdf that previously worked with Reader. But Adobe Reader XI won't open (says problem with "protected mode"). I can't open any pdf's either on my computer or on the internet at trusted sights. Troubleshooting takes me to a page on fixes for Reader X. Not helpful! Any ideas? (I uninstalled and reinstalled and still won't work.)

Unable to save PDF - Internet Explorer Protected Mode "A file error has occurred"

I hope you can all assist! Here's the detail:
Reader XI (11.0.06) and deployed as physical installation (.msi)
Windows 7 x64 Enterprise
Internet Explorer 8 & 9
Opening PDF's from HTTP & HTTPS locations
Users are unable to save the PDF file to their chosen location (network share or local directory) "A file error has occurred".
When the Internet Explorer Protected Mode is switched off, users are able to save the file to their chosen location.
Is this is specific functionality of IE Protected Mode whereby the ActiveX control is being restricted.
Is this due to Enhanced security within the Adobe Reader 11.0.06 application?
Our current Reader version (9.3.0) is able to save files from unprotected locations, so this is creates a problem justify upgrading.
Do anyone have any suggestions?

How are you saving the file (right click or from File menu)? Does the problem happen with any PDF file? Does the problem go away if you turn "Enable Protected Mode at startup" from Reader (Preferences > Security (Enhanced)? -
Adobe Reader XI Protected Mode WhitelistConfig
Adobe Reader XI Protected Mode is blocking a link in PDF. The link is to an internal document management system: HP TRIM.
If Protected Mode is disabled the link opens successfully.
If Protected Mode is enabled the link fails to open yet nothing is logged in AdbeReaderBroker.log to help identify what is being blocked.

Further testing has identified that the embedded links worked with Protected Mode prior to Adobe Reader XI Patch 11.0.03.

Adobe Security Team provided a hotfix for this issue which will be included in the next quarterly release.
They also advised that the following registry value was required for the Trim:// url to function in Protected Mode:

I have installed Reader 10.0.1 on my MacBook (OS X 10.6.3).
I am trying to disable protected mode in order to view a particularly troublesome file/document. Where is the configuration panel that will allow me to toggle on/off "Enable Protected Mode at Startup"?
I've seen it suggested that this panel is located under Edit > Preferences > General, but my version of Reader does not present this as an option (ie. there is no "Preferences" option under the Edit tab). Adobe Reader requiring Protected mode disabled
I know this is somehow a 3rd party related problem, however I would like to discuss why this is happening.
We upgraded our servers from 2008 R2 to 2012 and suddenly Adobe Reader started to get" There was an error opening this document. Access denied." I wonder why this is happening. I found that edit >preferences > disable "Enable protected
mode at startup" would fix the problem.
I also wonder if this also is not related to Windows Server 2012 standard, but only happens when deduplication is enabled as all our data drives are deduplicated now (with great success).Although this is probably an Adobe Reader issue, but same thing here: Adobe Reader 11.0.7 with same options enabled and now on Server 2012R2 RDS saying 'access denied' which only can be solved by disabeling 'Protected mode', what nobody actually wants.

Disabling Protected Mode via GPO?
Okay, this is getting so frustrating. I finally got a good working AIP of 10.0.1, but I'm still struggling to disable that pesky Protected Mode. That spash screen is confusing too many people. I can't find an option using the Adobe Customization Wizard to disable it. I did find code online to make a ADM for it though here: http://www.appdeploy.com/packages/detail.asp?id=1976 (in the notes section).
I thought I had it working. I imported it and was able to disable the spash screen through the new ADM menu. But after I closed the window, I wanted to double check that I got it all right and now it's all blank! I have the menu's, but no options to enable or disable. WTF is going on here? I'm ready to give up on this mess and roll back to version 9. Please help!!!!
