Enable remote disc on Macbook Pro 2011.

So I know this can be done on a Macbook Air but I want to do it on my Macbook Pro. I'm testing the functionality for a friend whose similar model macbook pro has a superdrive that seems to be gradually dying. On my own machine I've tried following the terminal commands listed in this post
http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=455975
The post is as old as 2008 however it seems to be confirmed as working as late as April this year. Yet for me it doens't work at all. I've enabled disc and dvd sharing on a machine on the same network (I haven't entered those terminal commands but I don't think I need to for the machine being used as the server/sharer) I've tried variously switching the disc and DVD sharing on and off on my machine (the client machine) and still can't see any remote disc. I've even tried looking in the sidebar at the laptop which has the disc in it and can see only it's publicly shared folder and no disc. What's happening here?
Surely this functionality can't only be possible on the MBA, that'd be pretty ridiculous since they both use the same OS and have the same network capabilities and understand the same filesystems and the MBP even has the ability to share the discs. I hope they haven't prevented this from being possible on other machines, I can't see how that would be a good idea.
Anyone know how to make it work? I noticed in the forum post that one of the two steps had become unnecessary later down the road, should I reverse that step?

No.

  • How to install operating system on new hard drive without installation disc on macbook pro 2011

My macbook pro 2011 does not come with a recovery disc or any disc at all, my hard drive recently failed and i have no backup. i have replaced the hard drive but don't know how to install the operating system on the new hard drive.

If it originally shipped with 10.7 or newer, connect the computer to the Internet and start it up with the Option, Command, and R keys held down. You'll be able to install an OS.
If it shipped with 10.6.8 or earlier and wasn't upgraded to use Apple's Internet Recovery system, phone AppleCare and order the disks.

  • Will Remote Desktop allow me to access and use my Mac Pro 2009 from my MacBook Pro 2011?

Own a small business, have two locations, I need to use Windows via Parallels on my Mac Pro 2009, but I am forced to spend most of my time at the other location which has a MacBook Pro 2011. Will Remote Desktop allow me to use the MacBook Pro 2011 to access the Mac Pro and use Windows via Parallels?

If all you need is to be able to control another computer, then ARD would be overkill. If the systems have Mac OS X 10.5 or later you can use the Screen Sharing built into those versions of Mac OS X to control the system.
Another and perhaps easier option is to use a service such as LogMeIn or TeamViewer. Either option may be significantly easier than dealing with screen sharing or ARD.
You'll want to confirm that any solution you choose will work with Parallels, of course. I haven't tried remote control of a system to use Parallals, so there may be special considerations there. If you don't get useful comments here, you might try Parallels' forums.

I've installed windows 7 with the help of bootcamp on my macbook pro 2011.
Please help me how to install mac drivers for windows7 64 bit???

You either download drivers from within Boot Camp Assistant and save to USB FAT disk, or you insert and use 10.6.x OS X DVD when in Windows and install and run the SETUP from there.

Step 4: Install the Boot Camp Drivers for Windows
After installing Windows, install Mac-specific drivers and other software for Windows using your Mac OS X installation disc.  The Mac OS X disc installs drivers to support Mac components, including AirPort,built-in iSight camera, the Apple Remote, the trackpad on a portable Mac, and thefunction keys on an Apple keyboard.
The Mac OS X disc also installs the Boot Camp control panel for Windows and theApple Boot Camp system tray item.
To install the Boot Camp drivers:
1 Eject the Windows installation disc.
2 Insert the Mac OS X disc.  If the installer doesn’t start automatically, browse the disc using Windows Explorerand double-click the setup.exe file in the Boot Camp directory.
    3 Follow the onscreen instructions.
If a message appears that says the software you’re installing has not passed Windows  Logo testing, click Continue Anyway.
Windows that appear only briefly during the installation don’t require your input.
If nothing appears to be happening, there may be a hidden window that you mustrespond to. Check the taskbar and look behind open windows.
Important: Do not click the Cancel button in any of the installer dialogs.
4 After your computer restarts, follow the instructions in the Found New Hardware  Wizard to update your software drivers (Windows XP only).
5 Follow the instructions for any other wizards that appear.
6 Check for updated Boot Camp drivers by using Apple Software Update or going to www.apple.com/support/bootcamp.
If You Have Problems Installing the Device Drivers
If it appears that the Boot Camp drivers weren’t successfully installed, try repairing them.
    To repair Boot Camp drivers:
1 Start up your computer in Windows.
2 Insert your Mac OS X installation disc.
3 If the installer doesn’t start automatically, browse the disc using Windows Explorerand double-click the setup.exe file in the Boot Camp directory.
4 Click Repair and follow the onscreen instructions.
If a message appears that says the software you’re installing has not passed Windows  Logo testing, click Continue Anyway.
If you need to reinstall specific drivers, you can install one driver at a time. For example,if your built-in iSight camera isn’t working, you can reinstall just the iSight driver.
Individual drivers are in the Drivers folder on the Mac OS X installation disc.

  • Macbook Pro 2011 charging behaving weird.  Charges and stops repeatedly and takes very long.  Help?

So a few weeks ago my MacBook Pro 2011 started having charging problems.  I would use it normally.  Then plug it in to charge anywhere between 5-20 percent like I've been doing for the past year that I've had it (since August 2011).  Anyway, what happens now is that it charges but extremely slowly - at least 4 hours to fully charge as opposed to the 1 1/2 to 2 hours that it used to take.  Also, it seems to be draining a lot quicker than it used to while only browsing the internet.  Furthermore, while charging, the battery meter goes from the percent its charged to to "not charging" back and forth.  What's going on?  Is there a problem with my battery, my computer, or the magsafe charger?  [please refer to the pictures below to get a better understanding of my problem - these pictures were taken over a 2 hour time period - a time period that usually is enough to charge my computer] - if you'll notice, in the first two pictures, the percent barely went up by 10 in a half hour period:

  • How to reformat a Macbook pro 2011 hard drive?

    Hello,
How do you reformat a MacBook Pro (OS X 10.7.3) 2011s Hard drive? I already backed up all the files I wanted to save. But since I have the new Macbook pro 2011 (only a few months since I got it) it didn't come with an installation disc, but instead already came with all the applications. I'm wondering how to reformat the hard drive so it wipes out everything and I can start fresh and what would happen to all the applications?

Well Lion has a Lion Recovery Partition on the drive you can access by holding command r and booting, there you can erase the Lion OS X partition completely (all files and programs) and reinstall Lion or simply reinstall Lion if there is a issue with it (no programs or files are touched in this second procedure)
Lion is downloaded from apple's servers, you need AppleID and a fast reliable internet connection with no bandwidth caps limiting you.
    https://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718
If you want to replace the drive, there is software called Carbon Copy Cloner than can clone both the Lion OS X Partition and the Lion Recovery Partition to a external drive intact (excpet what's in the Trash, no Filevualt, no bootcamp, use free Winclone for that)
Hold the option key and you can boot from the external drive and format and clone everything to the new internal drive. TimeMachine of 10.7.2 and later can be booted from it's Lion Recovery Parttion as well just to restore only, cloning is better process because it gives full access to everything like before on the internal drive.
    http://www.bombich.com/index.html
Some newer Mac's have Lion Internet recovery built in where the firmware will install the Lion Recovery/OS back onto a completely blank/new hard drive.

  • How do I permanently erase my entire MacBook Pro 2011?

I am giving my Mac to somebody and don't want any recoverable traces of me to be on my computer. It's a MacBook Pro 2011 13" but it has Yosemite 10.10.1

Before Selling or Giving Away Your Pre-Lion Mac
Deauthorize your computer from iTunes, if applicable.
Back up your data using Time Machine or other backup methods for OS X Mavericks or Mountain Lion.
If you use Find My Mac or other iCloud features on this Mac, complete these steps:
    Back up your iCloud content.
Choose Apple Menu () > System Preferences, then click iCloud.
Deselect the Find My Mac checkbox.
Sign out of iCloud. When you sign out of iCloud, you're asked whether you want to remove iCloud data from your Mac. Removing iCloud data in this way makes sure that the data isn't also removed from any of your other devices that are using the same iCloud account.
If you're using OS X Mountain Lion v10.8 or later, sign out of iMessage:
In the Messages app, choose Preferences > Accounts
Select your iMessage account, then click Sign Out.
      5.  Follow these steps for installing the original version of OS  that came with the computer.
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After Disk Utility loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and
drive size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled), then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. If you are planning to sell or give your computer away, then do the following:
After you reformat your hard drive and reinstall OS X, the computer restarts to a
Welcome screen and asks you to choose a country or region. If you want to leave
the Mac in an out-of-box state, don't continue with the setup of your system. Instead,
press Command-Q to shut down the Mac. When the new owner turns on the Mac,
the Setup Assistant will guide them through the setup process.
Note: Portions of the above have been copied from What to do before selling or giving away your Mac - Apple Support.

  • Is it possible to remote-access my MacBook Pro away from home?

Is it possible to remote-access my MacBook Pro away from home?
    What I currently have:
    Late-2011 MacBook Pro 8,2 (OSX Mavericks 10.9.5)
    2.5ghz Intel i7 quad-core
    16gb RAM, 1024gb SSD raid-0 (internal)
    Connecting to the internet through:
Apple Time Capsule 2TB (via ethernet)
    +
Time Warner Cable "Ultimate 100" (top speed)
I would basically like to be able to have my MacBook Pro on *at home* and connected to the internet via ethernet to the Apple Time Capsule.. and then be able to somehow connect and log in to my MacBook Pro, either through another computer or preferably, my iPhone 5s..
Mostly just interested in having accessibility to be able to make downloads, such as magnet links, while away from the computer.. and basically be able to come home to mostly finished or complete downloads.. Basically like how you can DVR/TiVo things from your iPhone and have it sync with your DVR/TiVo while away from home..
    Is this possible? Thank you!!

    Yes you can do this.
I would suggest you start with TeamViewer.com (free for personal use).
You will need to install TeamViewer on your Mac AND your iPhone.
The Mac version will need to be configured for unattended remote access.  You should practice before you leave the home.
There are other iPhone apps that can remotely access a Mac.  A lot depends on whether they can get past the home NAT router.  Be careful of apps that provide VNC access, but do not provide a way to get past the home router.  If you try one of these, make sure you test it away from your home WiFi network.

  • Best ram for macbook pro 2011?

I am thinking about upgrading my macbook pro 2011 with 8gb or 16gb (overkill?) of ram. Which is the best ram/bang for the buck?

I upgraded to Crucial 16 GB on my MB Pro 6 months ago and have never, ever, even once been sorry or less than amazed.
Of course, a Crucial 512 GB SSD does not hurt, either. They work together seamlessly.  Nice Mac, nice Mac.
12 seconds to boot up from full Shut Down? Too cool ............................................................................... ..
    Leonardosanti says.
PS FYI: My old Apple-supplied 500 GB hard drive is now separately enclosed and makes an excellent full backup. Using SuperDuper to clone, it is bootable albeit as a spinning disc hard drive it runs much slower. Had my old Snow Leopard system and files on it. Jumped to a clean install of Mountain Lion. Did all this myself, glad its done, whew, successfully. The Ram and the SSD are gems, like the Crucial support people.
PPS Yes, these were expensive improvements. Ouch but ... Worth it.

  • Bluetooth not working macbook pro 2011, AHT found nothing

My macbook pro 2011 has been having some issues with bluetooth. The system doesn't even recognize as having bluetooth hardware. I went under the hardware profile and it actually says No information found under bluetooth. I was able to do a full hour diagnostic test using Apple Hardware Test and everything was all clean. I'm not sure if this is Yosemite related or not. I definitely remember using my bluetooth enabled keyboard and mouse on my system before I upgraded to Yosemite. Wifi works fine. I've tried resetting PRAM, but nothing. I'm at a loss, not sure if there is anything else I can do.

Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider. You may have to leave the machine there for several days.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional—ask if you need guidance.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

  • My Macbook Pro 2011 wont boot properly. only when batter is disconnected. HELP

    hi all.
i have recently bought a macbook pro, 2011 i5 4GB knowing it wasn't fully working, but i need some help.
when i try and power it on, nothing happens at all (it did turn on once for about 10 seconds, then shut itself down.) i have since been playing around with it, fault finding, and i have found out that if i have the battery disconnected, and have it connected to the charger it works! (if holding CMD+D.) i have tried running the hardwear test, but when holding down the relivent keys on startup it just continues to load the OS X as normal. i do not have the start up discs either. im not entirely sure where to go from here, id love to know what could possibly be causing this fault. any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance.

Update - I've got it all powered up, updated etc. it only doesn't start now after a forced shutdown (holding off button) if I press shutdown, restart etc it works fine. Really want this sorted, any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm ripping my hair out! Thanks
