Enable Single Window Mode in Acrobat 9

Please re-enable the Single Window (MDI) Mode in Acrobat 9 as it is an un welcome user experience of having dozens of Acrobat windows open in the taskbar. I can suggest to have either of the following:-
1. Give an option to the user whether to open the multiple or single Acrobat windows as is the case with Acrobat 8 with "Preferences->Documents->Show Each document in its own window"
2. Introduce tabbed browsing in Acrobat similar to the one implemented in IE 7.0 to have multiple PDFs opened in a single Acrobat window.
Thanks,
Atin

"In Acrobat 9, we dropped support for MDI."
Not a good idea!
Now, please let us have it back.
You have to realize that you break peoples work flow with this ill-thought-through change.
"Feature Parity with Macintosh was desired" -- Not a valid argument from a windows-user point-of-view
"Making SDI default, but still providing MDI in version 8 was done to start the deprecation of MDI." -- That trick didn't work, re-enabling MDI was the first setting I changed in Acrobat 8 (and actually Acrobat 8 broke so many other things, I quickly reverted to Acrobat 7).
"Microsoft advised that to work as good as possible on Vista, applications should avoid MDI." -- Microsoft is not the user, we are! Besides, many W7 users reset their desktop to classical.
"This increases the cost of testing the product and the cost of fixing bugs." -- So it's easier on Adobe, but bad for us... is that an argument at all?
"in a world where larger screen resolutions, multiple monitors and the need to see multiple documents at one time has increased, SDI mode offered higher benefits." -- As someone else already mentioned, on a multi-monitor system SDI is flawed.
So... now that you consider reverting to MDI, please also introduce tabs, that's the only thing MDI applications typically lack, though things are improving.
EDIT: People been asking for this since 2008! Come on, already...

All that you describe is the standard setting them I have long found, but they do not bring any results. What is interesting - parameter "TargetedClicksCreateTabs" in a state of "true" which is processed in the Mac version, broken in the Windows-based version if it is to register the file C: \ Program Files \ Safari \ Safari.resources \ Defaults.plist a file stored in the folder C: \ Documents and Settings \ Admin \ Application Data \ Apple Computer \ Preferences \ com.apple.Safari.plist scrambled to change it theoretically impossible, but if you replace it with THIS file, then it can be set, but the parameter "TargetedClicksCreateTabs" still not working

  • No single window mode in Acrobat 9?

What happened to the option to display PDFs in a single Acrobat Window? I often have quite a few documents open -- I don't want a dozen separate Acrobat windows.

This is the worst thing to happen to acrobat, in my opinion.
The clutter that it creates on my computer and the fact that i cant even see the document title when I have a bunch of them open (because the task bar is too full) is unacceptable.
I never would have changed from Acrobat 8 if I had known, and now I cant switch back (company license).
The latest thing i can find about addressing it is here:

  • Single Window Mode for Windows version?

    Hey there,
as some might know, there's a "hack" to get Single Window Mode for Safari on Mac. Normally. links with "target=_blank" will open in a new window instead of a new tab. In order to get Single Window Mode, the following code needs to be typed into Terminal:
defaults write com.apple.Safari TargetedClicksCreateTabs -bool true
Unfortunately, this won't work on Windows, so I would like to know if there's another way to have Single Window Mode.

No, there isn't. That feature is not implemented in the Windows version The only way to open targeted links in a new Tab is to Control-click or Right-click on the link and select Open in New Tab from the contextual menu.

  • New GIMP with optional single-window mode

According to this blog http://www.mmiworks.net/eng/publication … -mode.html, GIMP will have a single-window option in the future. This has regularily been a request by the community, especially by people using GIMP under Windows. As preferences of the community are at 50%-50% for or against a single window user interface, they want to keep both as an option.
I installed gimp-git from AUR today but I did not see an option to activate the single window mode. Anybodfy else tried this?

There is a discussion about it on gimp-dev. This thread may have forked in the middle, but the idea keeps going:

  • Re-Enabling Single User Mode :\

From what i understand, the booting up from single user mode (holding down Apple + S on boot up) has been disabled with firmware. This able to be removed by taking the battery out and removing a memory card. But i really don't want to do that.
    My question is:
Is there any way to edit the sudoers file (or possibly execute the "visudo" command) using terminal? Or any other way *without administrative acces*.

Another way, though not as easy as the previous suggestion. would be to go
to the following download the appropriate ISO for you system. burn it to cdrom.
Then boot the system from the cdrom, it's will prompt about installing it. read the
notes that are printed to the screen. If memory serves me it, I believe you just need to
type 'shell' to get to a shell prompt, it's tells you in the notes. The mount the system disk and edit the file(s), disks device name are also reported.

  • Window Mode button gone?

In Snow Leopard and Leopard, there was a long button in the upper right of each Finder window that would allow the sidebar to be turned off and on.
Mountain Lion seems to have removed this. Any way to get it back? I notice many mounted disk images open in a single window mode.

To answer your last question: yes, the keyboard works (you've said so yourself) and yes, you are missing something really simple.
Pressing the Record button can lead to recording a) Audio if on an armed audiotrack b) MIDI events  (notes and control messages). But it does NOT record any (Track Based-) Automation; for that you need to set the automation mode to Touch or Latch. Then it will record without the need to use any record button, just playback. You should set the automation mode on the track to Read once you're done automating though.

    Hi all
i have enabled single entry mode . That means i should see the tasks under MY timesheet instead of my work in PWA.
However for some plans this doesnt happen . the tasks apper under MY TASKS instead of MY TIMESHEET
    what could be the problem

    tanveer041989 --
Pardon me for bumping into this conversation.  When you use Single Entry Mode (SEM) with Project Server, this means that tasks will appear on both the Tasks page AND the Timesheet page in PWA for team members.  If you do not want team members to
use the Tasks page for entering progress, then I would recommend that your Project Server administrator hide the Tasks link in the Quick Launch Menu and the Tasks button in the Track Your Work carousel at the top of the Home page in PWA (assuming you are using
Project Server 2013).  This will restrict users to only the Timesheet page.
To answer your follow up question, you have two choices:
Delete the timesheet and then recreate it using the Manage Timesheets page.
Navigate to the Timesheet page for the selected time period. In the Timesheet ribbon, click the Add Row pick list button and select the Select from Existing Assignments item.  In the Add an Existing Task dialog, select the missing tasks and then click
    the OK button.
I think you can see that the first option is by far the simplest.  Hope this additional information helps.

  • Mounting Windows Disk within Single User Mode

A Windows machine I administer kacked and the users didn't back up all their data. Windows won't touch the drive, so I popped it in a 10.3.9 Mac... I can copy a handful of files and folders from the Finder, but some directories won't read -- there may be physical damage to the drive (if the kernel panics are any indication).
When I boot into Single User Mode, I can't get into the disk.... the disk(s) show up under /Volumes, but you can't actually get into them... only a file named .autodiskmounted shows up for each Windows partition. I'm guessing this is a product of the disk being formatted as a NTFS drive (I'm thinking that's probably what Windows XP Home used on this drive).
Can you mount a NTFS or FAT32 disk from Single User Mode? How?
    Many thanks!

    Everett
To mount a disk in 10.3.9, look at the first part of this FAQ: Resetting the System Immutable Flag in 10.3.
You will need to replace the "mount -t hfs" with "mount -t msdos", but I don't know if you would need further options.
If you can find a 10.4 system, it may be easier, since "autodiskmount" appears to work again. See: kmosx4: Resetting the System Immutable Flag in OS X 10.4

  • Updating an App in Single Application Mode for Surface (Windows 8.1 RT)

I have a Windows Store App running on a Surface (Windows 8.1 RT) in

I've put a new release out on the store for this Windows Store App. Is it possible for a Surface, running this app in kiosk mode, to
automatically update the app to this new release? (Like I would expect a normal windows 8.1 installation to do)
Until now, i've had to remove the kiosk mode, go to the Store and update it manually. Then restoring the kiosk mode.

As far as I know, there is no way to update an APP in kiosk mode untill now. Hope this problem can be resolved in the future.

  • Can't enable root user in single user mode

hey, im having a problem. I cant enable the root user in single user mode. This is what I do:
    1.boot in single user mode
2.I run the command /sbin/fsck -fy
    3.I run the command /sbin/mount -uw /
    4.I run the command passwd
5.I type the password and then I retype it, but it gives me an error saying passwd: cant change password for root the account is not enabled (thats not exactly what it said, but you get the point)
this worked in leopard, why dosent it work now? can someone give me an alternative way or tell me what im doing wrong?
P.S. give me an actual answer not a why enable root? and I dont want to use directory utility.

The command is wrong man. Do the following:
    Boot into S.U. Mode (Cmd+S).
once the terminal prompt opens, type the following:
    mount -uw / ("mount"+space+"-uw"+space+slash)
    launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.opendirectoryd.plist
    passwd root
(after you press enter it will ask the password for the root user. Type it, even if it won't show any character. Then type again to confirm. Once you had finished type: exit).
Test it and post the results.

  • Enable Remote Management in Single-User Mode

    Hi,
I would like to know how to enable Remote Management option (System Preferences > Sharing) in single-user mode.
    Thanks in advance
    Regards

If ssh won't get you where you want and brute-force loading the various plists isn't working for your case (as mentioned, error messages and details might help), then AFAIK, fully remote-managing a Mac usually involves adding a network-capable power switch and an outboard network-capable KVM adapter.  (The Xserve was the last box with (limited) remote-management capabilities, and there's not been any indication that Apple might be releasing systems with Intel AMT (iAMT, vPro) support available and enabled.)

  • Why can't I enter single user mode on my Mac Mini for an admin password reset?

    Hi,
I recently created a new user account for my mac and deleted the old one, not realising that this was the only account with admin priveleges. As such, I no longer have access to administrator priveleges, and cannot grant them to my new user account.
I have tried to boot in single user mode and recovery mode but neither command results in any reaction on the part of my computer.
This thread follows on from a previous, unrelated disscussion:
BDAqua: If you hold alt key at bootup do you see a lock in the middle?
    Yenots: No...what does this mean?
BDAqua: If it did, it would mean Firmware Password Protection was enabled, which prevents booting in other modes, so that's not the problem, are you using a wired Mac KB, or Windows KB?
Yenots: I'm using an 'Apple Keyboard with Numeric Keypad' [ http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MB110B/B/apple-keyboard-with-numeric-keypad-br itish ]
If you find me here BDAqua, hit me with your knowledge!
Any other contributions are welcome and, now we're under the right heading, will hopefully help other users who have encountered this problem.
    Thanks, Cristo

    Hi,
Thanks for the link to MacPilot, and the sexy screenshot. I found an archived version for 10.4 on the koingosw website. That solves getting into single user/safe mode. Though I'd be interested to see whether sudo nvram boot-args="-s" will result in single user boot.
As for creating administrator priveleges for my new user account, I've found a method which looks good:
         \single user mode\
         cmd-s
         \mount drive\
         mount -uw
         \open 'directory access'\
         lauchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.opendirectory.plist
         \list users\
         ls /Users
         \change password\
         dscl . passwd /Users/<username> <password>
I think that this method intends that if I change the root users password I'll be changing the administrator password  (as root is the only user with administrator priveleges), and subsequently be able to change my new user accounts priveleges using 'netinfomanager'. But I'm not 100%. Could you give me your opinion on this?
Furthermore, three keys 'L' 'O' and '(' aren't working on my keyboard, which means I can't try this until I find an intact keyboard to borrow. I was thinking maybe a mod version of the above instructions would work in terminal using sudo, so I could use the keyboard viewer to type the missing characters. If you have any ideas on constructing such a mod I would be interested to hear them.
Otherwise, Thank You for your help BDAqua! And enjoy your summer wherever you are.

  • Resetting the Admin password in single user mode

Ok, my friend bought an old Imac from someone she went to school with with OS 10.4.2 on it. It works fine except that she can not install any programs because there is an admin password that she does not know. She asked the person she bought it from, he says he doesn't even remember setting a password. Normaly with this issue id just pop in the install disk and reset it from there, except neither of them have the install disk, and my install disk is to current for the machine. Does anyone know how I can reset the admin acount using single user mode commands? I can do it on my Mac Book pro but it doesn't seem to work the same way on 10.4. Please help!
EDIT: It is a Power PC G3 if that helps.

You do not need to delete "the users home folders". Nor do you need to delete the netinfo database. Here are two proceedures:
    Change Password
    Mac OS X:
Changing or resetting an account password via GUI:
    Resetting a user's password
Resetting the original administrator account password
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106156
You do not have a CD/DVD
Changing password from single user mode:
You can also change the administrator's password from single user mode or create a new administrator account.
You need to get into single use mode for steps one and two that are listed below.
This page will tell you how to get into single user mode.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1492
Basically, you hold down the command-s key then powering on your machine. The command key has a little apple symbol on the lower left. It is between the alt/option key and the space bar. On a PC keyboard, it will be the windows key, I think.
    1) You can change the password on an account. ( Do you know Unix. You are in a Unix single user console. ) The setup commands you need should be listed on the screen. For Mac OS 10.4.11, the commands are:
    # Type the follow two instructions to access the startup disk in read/write:
    /sbin/fsck -fy
    /sbin/mount -uw /
    # Start up some utility processes that are needed.
    sh /etc/rc
    # You will probably need to press the return key once the system stops typing.
    # To find out the users on the system type, use the list command. The l is a lower case L:
    ls /Users
    # One of these accounts will be the administrator.
    # Pick one of the users which I'll call a-user-name and type it in this command:
    passwd a-user-name
    # and enter the new user password. You need six characters.
    # You will need to enter your password twice. Your typing will not show up on the screen just
    # press enter when you complete the typing.
    # For cryptic information on these commands try:
    man ls
    man passwd
The root account isn't enabled by default. I am not sure if changing the password on root will enable it.
    2) Get the Mac to set up an additional administrative account. You can then change the password on your old account.
Start with your computer power off. Hold down command-s. Power on your computer.
    Type in the following:
The first two commands will depend on your release of Mac OS X. Look at what is typed out in the console to determine the exact format.
    # Type the follow two instructions to access the startup disk in read/write. Press return after each command.
    /sbin/fsck -fy
    /sbin/mount -uw /
    cd /var/db
    pwd
#List all files. The l is a lower case L.
    ls -a
#The move command acts as a rename command in this format.
    mv -i .applesetupdone .applesetupdone.old
    reboot
Once you've done that the computer reboots and it's like the first time you used the machine. Your old accounts are all safe. From there you just change all other account passwords in the account preferences!!
