Enable TRIM on fusion drive?

I have recently installed a 256GB Sandisk SSD into my Mac mini and set it up, in conjunction with the existing 1TB HDD, as a single volume fusion drive (see: https://discussions.apple.com/message/24609725#24609725).
I would like to know whether it is possible to enable TRIM for the SSD while it remains integrated with the HDD as a fusion drive. If so, how can this be done?
Incidentally, the new fusion drive set-up has been outstandingly effective and an absolute breeze to set-up (once the new drive had been installed). It has been the most cost-effective upgrade imaginable for the Mac mini.

Personally, I don't feel you need TRIM enable on a Fusion drive with 3rd party SSDs. I never did when I had an Intel SSD fused.
TRIM Enabler will work on a Fusion drive, though if you feel you need it. See the bottom of the provided link.

  • Should be trim enabled on Apple's fusion drive?

Just got the late 2012 iMac with fusion drive and wondered if I should enable trim.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
If Fusion Drive supports TRIM (I doubt it), it's activated by default as it was installed by Apple. Don't worry about this

  • So I've changed my hard drive for an ssd and now I've been told to enable trim now I've got the apple cover will they show me how to enable it with out some program of the internet ?

so I've changed my hard drive for an ssd and now I've been told to enable trim  ?  now I've got the apple cover will they show me how to enable it with out some program of the internet ?

Use an app called chameleon ssd optimizer.
I enabled trim with it after almost a year of having installed a Samsung 840 pro SSD and my read/write speeds almost quadrupled.
I would definite;y advise using it even though Samsung SSD's come with there own garbage disposal.
    Hope that helps.

  • Enable TRIM for Solid State Drives

Does Lion enable TRIM support for solid state drives?  If it does how do I enable it?
I already know that my drive supports TRIM.

Only for Apple SSDs. This utility, TRIM Enabler 1.2, is supposed to enable it for third-party drives. Note that the newer SSDs may not need TRIM.

  • Fusion drive on 2011 mid Mac mini...

    Hi everyone,
I understand how the new Fusion drive works. But only available on new macs.
I've been watching videos on YouTube that show how to make an ssd and hdd into one volume. And they show after the upgrade that these upgrades work. Now, I've also been hearing from other sources that it is impossible to make your own Fusion drive. That all you are doing is adding the two different drives. That the two drives don't actually don't work like I've been seeing on you tube.
I really do want to make my Mac mini into Fusion drive Mac. I don't have the funds for a new computer. I've also seen the new hybrid drives. 8gb ssd with 750 gb hhd to kind of a poor man's version of the Fusion drive.
So, I really need the advice of the experts here.
    Thanks everyone,
    mhh

    1. Fusion Drive works on OS level, or more precisely, it lays between the physical storage and the file system, therefore there are few requirements for hardware, only you need an SSD + an HDD to make it work.
    2. With the two drives properly installed, boot your mac with a recovery disk (10.8.3 and later) or with the Internet recovery (which makes sure that you have the latest recovery image), the disk utility will prompt that your drives are not working correctly and needs to be fixed. Fix it as prompted (note that your data on BOTH drives will be erased, so make a backup before doing this), and you will get a fusion drive, automatically, without any further configuration.
    3. Reboot and restore from your backup, you are ready to go!
    Addtionally:
    1. You will need to enable the TRIM support for your SSD (it's pretty important) manually (try TRIM Enabler: http://www.groths.org/trim-enabler/ ), because OS X only provide native TRIM support for Apple stock SSDs, but not for any 3rd party ones.
    2. As someone said above, the RAM capacity has little relevency with the performance of Fusion Drive.
    3. Hybrid only achieves a small part (read and write caching) of what Fusion Drive provides, as the SSD part is too small. Fusion Drive stores the whole OS and other frequently accessed data almost permanently on the SSD part, which means you will have most of your job done much faster.

  • DIY Fusion Drive and RAID 5

    Hi everyone!
I have spent several hours by reading various forums but haven’t found any definitive answers.
I have a 12 Core Mac Pro with the following setup: one 1TB SATA hard drive that carries the system and applications. For the files and storage there are three 2TB SATA drives in RAID 5 controlled by Apple RAID card. I am going to install a 512 GB Samsung 840 Pro SSD drive in the optical bay and have initially planned to use it just for the system and applications, but am curious if the following is possible.
    1) Is it possible to combine the RAID 5 array with the SSD and create a Fusion drive?
    2) If yes, will it retain all the features of the RAID 5?
    3) Should TRIM be enabled?
    Thank you in advance!

TRIM directly addresses the shortcomings of having only garbage collection available. SSD controller manufacturers and designers (including SandForce, the controller manufacturer for OWC's SSDs), recommends that TRIM be used with their products. So does Samsung.
For example, here's a 2011 article from OWC describing how you don't need TRIM on their SSDs and how it can in fact hurt performance or reliability.
That article has been discussed here on MacInTouch before. In my opinion it's bad advice, and inaccurate in some of its assertions. It also ignores the recommendation made by SandForce to use TRIM with their SSD controllers. But even if one were to take that article at face value, applying that advice to SSDs other than OWC's makes little sense.
The reason I'm advising against TRIM is simply that it's yet another driver-level modification of the OS, and these always carry potential risk (as all the folks with WD hard drives who lost data can attest to).
Apples and oranges comparison, for a variety of reasons. The short of it is that TRIM is supported natively in all recent versions of OS X. The tools used to enable it for third party SSDs do not add a new kernel extension; they change the setting to allow Apple's native TRIM implementation to be used with SSDs other than those factory installed by Apple.
This shows that the 840s do work slightly better with TRIM than without, but the differences are (in my opinion) trivial, a 9% increase at best.
One of the major reasons for the skepticism that exists about TRIM is that so many people, the authors of both articles you linked to included, don't understand it.
TRIM is not, strictly speaking, a performance-enhancement technology -- though it is plainly obvious that most people think it is.
Though it can, in many circumstances, improve performance, there are also circumstances under which it will provide little or no noticeable benefit. Not coincidentally, a new SSD tested fresh out of the factory packaging is unlikely to show much (if any) benefit. Or rather, TRIM is providing a real benefit for new SSDs, but that benefit doesn't become measurable in terms of benchmark performance testing until every memory cell in the SSD -- including many gigabytes of cells hidden from visibility by the SSD controller -- have been written to at least once. Writing 128 GB of files to an SSD with a nominal capacity of 128 GB won't do it, as there are several gigabytes (exact number varies depending on the model) still unwritten.
Under real-world use conditions, having TRIM disabled means eventually having noticeable write performance degradation due to write amplification. It is far greater than "9%" -- it can be a 50% or greater drop in write performance, depending on various factors. Defining "eventually" is difficult because it depends on how the SSD is used. But given enough time and write cycles, it can happen to all SSDs used without TRIM, no matter how sophisticated their garbage collection algorithms are.
Under those same real-world use conditions, having TRIM enabled means that the SSD should almost never reach a state of having noticeable write performance degradation, as it should almost never get into a state where write amplification is happening.
I will concede that it is possible to design a lab test in such a way as to defeat the benefits provided by TRIM, but such tests do not reflect any real-world usage scenario I can imagine. Furthermore, those same contrived tests would put an un-TRIMmed drive into an equally-addled state even more quickly.
I would suggest reading through the rather lengthy previous discussions about TRIM. Here are a couple of my past posts that are most relevant to the current discussion:
A description of what TRIM is here.
I addressed some of OWC Larry's comments about TRIM use with OWC/SandForce SSDs here.

  • DIY MAC Fusion Drive

I'd like to create my own MAC Fusion Drive, but I'm not a dev so I need a little bit of guidance, which would also help a lot of people I'm guessing.
I am trying to follow jollyjinx's instructions, which are not that detailed.  Specifically, I am trying to find the names of my two drives and I can only find one.  Maybe the drives are not connected in a way to do this I'm not sure.  I have a 750GB HDD and an 80GB SSD installed internally in my 2011 Mac Mini.  I have been using both drives, SSD for the OS and a handful of common files and the HDD for iPhoto and iTunes libraries.  A Fusion drive would be perfect!

I can only find one reference to a drive in the data, but maybe I'm missing something.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!

So far, so good!  The article steps worked perfectly.  I setup the Fusion Drive and then restored from my Time Machine Backup (from the SSD).  I then moved the files over that were on the HDD (which I also backed up on my external drive.  Everything seems to be working great! The volume was previously named 80 SSD OS X (to differentiate from the HDD) and it is still named that, although, as you can see from the screenshot, it now has a 576GB capacity (not 750GB, which is what I thought I put in there--my memory is horrendous! lol) ....not a big deal.  I consider this a huge success at this point.  Thanks again for the article!

  • DIY Fusion drive not working after Mavericks install

    Hi Everyone,
I had setup a DIY fusion drive on my iMac 27" Mid 2011 - installing a Samsung SSD and a new 1TB drive. Everything was working swimmingly in Mountain Lion but as soon as I upgraded to Mavericks - everything slowed down.
In speed test I get an average write speed of 70 MB/s and a read of about 100MB/s...
Did I do something wrong? I installed Mavericks via the App Store.
    Thanks.
    Martin

Did you ever figure this out?  I have a similar experience (read below) and wanted to know if anything you learned helped?
    Hi all. I have a 3.2GHz i5 w 24 GB of Ram. Purchased in January 2014.
My good friend helped me install a DIY Fusion. I purchased a 256GB Samsung 840 Pro SSD and he did the work to "fuse" it with the regular 1TB HD the iMac came with. It is attached via USB 3.0 in an OWC case.
Originally, after being set up - Black Magic Speed tests benched it at 250-350 write and 500-650 read. I'm not a techie, but spent enough time to know that is pretty smoking and well above a typical disk hard drive.
Well, now it is down to 70-80 write and 180-250 read. The imac still boots in less than 25 seconds, so I don't feel the system is slow. (and it certainly blazes next to the first generation aluminum iMac I had before - a 2008 model). But I am concerned at deterioration of speed and really thought the extra investment would have led to faster sustained speeds.
    So my questions are:
    * Does anybody have any ideas why this is happening?
    * Any idea what the fix is? I'm hoping not to have to start over.
    * Any ideas whether it would have been better just to keep the 256 a boot drive for OS & apps, and leave the 1TB for media? I almost did this and wonder if it would have simplified things or led to better performance.
    * Any idea where to go from here?
BTW, I know a little about TRIM, but I think my friend said the Samsung will handle that itself.
Lastly, you can probably tell I know a bit ABOUT this stuff, but not much on HOW to do it. So regular maintenance and upkeep is not my strong suit.
Thanks in advance for comments & suggestions.

  • Installing Windows 7 on Late 2013 iMac w/ Fusion Drive

Sorry in advance for the long post, but I have tried to exhaust all possibilities, and bring as much knowledge about our environment to the table to avoid confusion.
Here's our goal:  Install Mac & Windows on a Late 2013 iMac with a 1TB Fusion Drive
Install our Mac Image with Deepfreeze on Partition 1
Install our Windows 7 x64 Image with DeepFreeze on Partition 2
Here's why our goal cannot work out of the box:
Deepfreeze for Mac, is not supported on a Fusion Drive. Now before anyone says "just don't use deepfreeze"...we are using it, and that is that.
In order to get our existing image to work on the iMac, we had to split the Fusion Drive.
    Splitting Up the Fusion Drive
We booted into Recovery, Opened up terminal, retrieved the LvGUID, deleted it, and split up the SSD from the HD.
So now, we have a 128GB SSD, and 1TB HD showing up under Diskutilitiy.
We then partitioned the 1TB HD, into two, 500GB Partitions. One for Mac OSX 10.9.4, and the other for Windows.
The 128GB SSD is going to be used for scratch space, temp, etc. And is irrelevant at this time.
    Deploying our Mac Image
After splitting the Fusion Drive, we netbooted and installed a "NetRestore" of our image. Worked completely fine, no issues. DeepFreeze Works fine, the 128GB SSD shows up just fine, and the other 500GB Windows Partition shows up fine. All drives / partitions can be written to with no problem.
    Deploying our Windows Image
Deployed our Windows Partition image as we have done in the past, by booting into a windows PE Disk. (We have other various 2009, 2010, and 2011 iMacs across campus, with NO FUSION DRIVES installed, and dual boot them successfully using the same procedure. Minus the splitting of the fusion drive part of course) After the Windows image is deployed to the windows partition, we then boot it up to a Windows 7 Install disk to fix the MBR, Bootrec, and BCD options to allow it to boot properly. Here's where we run into issues: Upon getting the Windows 7 Install screen, the USB Keyboard and Mouse, DO NOT WORK.
Here's the options we've tried to get them to work properly
    1. Tried another known working Mac USB Keyboard & Mouse = Failed
    2. Tried a known working Windows Keyboard & Mouse = Failed
    3. Plugged Just a known working Mac Keyboard into each USB Port to see if recognized = Failed
    4. Plugged Just a known working Windows Keyboard into each USB Port to see if recognized = Failed
    5. Plugged Just a known working Mac Mouse into each USB Port to see if recognized = Failed
    6. Plugged Just a known working Windows Mouse into each USB Port to see if recognized = Failed
    7. A Windows 8.1 Recovery USB will boot and the USB Mouse & Keyboard are recognized and installed! (YAY!!) However, we cannot repair a Windows 7 install with Windows 8.1..
    BootCamp Drivers & Support Media
Downloaded the Current BootCamp Support drivers to enable the USB and other various drivers to be loaded during setup (Placed the $WinPEDriver$ and AutoUnattend.xml, and BootCamp folder on the Root of a USB, and modified a Windows7 Installation disk and placed on the root as well) The drivers do not load. Have also placed on a brand new USB2, and USB3 flash drive formatted at FAT32, to see if that made a difference, which it did not. The BootCamp USB made within Mac, it loads saying "Now booting into Boot Camp Assistant Created USB Drive..." or something like that (Don't remember the exact Message)
    Side Note:
Restored Fusion Drive to its original State, and booted from the BootCamp USB drive, still no usb Mouse & Keyboard Support.

    I have same issue
Tried everything differend hdd, ssd  as well
Basically when trying instal win 7 via iOS maverick when reboting and windows booting to the first scree everything freezing cant do  much.
Also tried install clear ssd without any system, but soon after format ssd or hdd I have error that I cant use this disk to install windows!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What is funny Windows 8 installing without any problem!!!
what is going on APPLE??wher is support
This issue I have only on Late 2013 on my other Late 2012 this issue not exist and everything working as should.

  • Enable TRIM on Samsung SSD 840, is it necessary?

This type of question has been asked a lot of times, I know, but I would like to receive some advice from experts.
Few weeks ago I installed my Samsung SSD 840. People say that it's not necessary to enable TRIM for such type of SSD. Others say that it allows to maintain the life of the SSD. So, what do you think about? What way to follow?
Note that in this case TRIM would be enabled by third part apps (TRIM enabler or Chameleon) and not by Apple.
    Thank you in adavnce.

TRIM does not improve performance. Do a google search for TRIM and read up on it. Is it necessary and a good thing to have enbled? I say yes it is even if the drive does some garbage collection. If TIRM was not needed or not good for the drive apple would not auto enable it on ssd's that are branded by apple. Neither would windows 7 auto enable trim when windows sees a ssd installed.

    Kappy,
    Thank you for yur reply.
If I enable the TRIM, what about the performance? Will it improve or not? IMHO, this would put an overhead on the SSD. What do you think about?
    Thank you again.

  • Enable TRIM on SSD Mac OS X Mountain Lion

I recently purchased and installed a Samsung SSD 840 Pro series on my MacBook Pro. I was reading up on SSDs and I heard something about enabling TRIM and how it makes the SSD last longer. How can I enable TRIM on my SSD on my MacBook Pro that's running Mac OS X Mountain Lion?

TRIM is necessary as SSD have limited writes, so the new written data has to go to a  less frequently used spot on the SSD.
It's a real shame Apple doesn't automatically enable TRIM on non-Apple SSD's, it knows when it formats it that it's one as it won't enable scrubbing.

  • Increase in shutdown time after enabling TRIM

    Hi,
I'm using mid 2012 macbook pro 13" & recently replaced the original hard drive with Corsair Neutron GTX 120GB. After replacing the HDD I freshly installed Mountain Lion. The performance benefits were conspicuous just as any one would expect. Faster boot/shutdown times (~12s/~4s), no jumping apps etc.
TRIM support for SSD was not enabled until I used this app called Trim Enabler (http://www.groths.org/trim-enabler/). A subsequent reboot enabled TRIM (as you can see below).
The weird thing I observed after using Trim Enabler is, shutdown now takes around 20+ seconds. I'm not sure if this due to some clearing activity through TRIM commands issued by OS X (considering TRIM was not active initially) or anything else.
NOTE: I don't see any visible performance impact other than the higher shutdown times.

I'm not sure what actually caused the slower shutdowns, but now ther's no issue at all
    Possibility 1:
The local copies made by Time Machine to SSD (when backup disk is disconnected)
    Possibility 2:
Considering there were few writes to my SSD earlier without TRIM, after enabling TRIM OSX took some time to get the SSD to optimal performance (may be few background copy/erase operations, I don't know for sure)
Now that I've switched to manual time machine backup (turning it ON only when the backup disk connected & turn OFF once done) the reboot time is back to blazing 2-3 seconds.
BTW those who still want to keep backup running automatically & don't want to keep local snapshots on SSD, should disable it using "$sudo tmutil disablelocal" (there's no GUI way of doing this). With SSD there's a good reason to disable local snaps by Time Machine; space, life, performance etc.

  • Fusion drive w/ bootcamp

    Hello,
This might be a little too soon to ask, but I just have to ask:
Does anyone know if the 'Fusion Drive' will function on a dual-boot machine via Bootcamp with Windows? Or even on a new iMac running only Windows?
    Thanks,
    Andy Jackson

As per Anandtech, it doesn't seem to be a typical hybrid drive per se, rather an OS X software-level function controlling a separate 4GB buffer on the SSD (the 'fusion' part) that controls writes over two separate drives (the SSD & the HDD).
"The Fusion part comes in courtesy of Apple's software that takes the two independent drives and presents them to the user as a single volume."
    and later:
"With Fusion Drive enabled, Apple creates a 4GB write buffer on the NAND itself. Any writes that come in to the array hit this 4GB buffer first, which acts as sort of a write cache. Any additional writes cause the buffer to spill over to the hard disk. The idea here is that hopefully 4GB will be enough to accommodate any small file random writes which could otherwise significantly bog down performance. Having those writes buffer in NAND helps deliver SSD-like performance for light use workloads.
That 4GB write buffer is the only cache-like component to Apple's Fusion Drive. Everything else works as an OS directed pinning algorithm instead of an SSD cache. In other words, Mountain Lion will physically move frequently used files, data and entire applications to the 128GB of NAND Flash storage and move less frequently used items to the hard disk. The moves aren't committed until the copy is complete (meaning if you pull the plug on your machine while Fusion Drive is moving files around you shouldn't lose any data). After the copy is complete, the original is deleted and free space recovered."

  • Enable Trim Command for SSD

How can I enable Trim Command for SSD in my Windows 7 O/S?

Unfortunately, using "fsutil behavior set disabledeletenotify 0" will not tell you if TRIM is actually working.
How do you know it is not already working?
You can try using this tool to check
    http://files.thecybershadow.net/trimcheck/
Copy the exe you download to a folder on the drive you wish to test (eg c:\test) and double click it. Follow the instructions.
