Enable Virtual Machine to Access Internet with ICS

In order to experience Hyper-V, you may choose to use Hyper-V on a laptop, and it will likely come with an issue when you create an external virtual switch bounding to a wireless NIC due to
hardware compatibility.
For this reason and requirement, Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) may help us. ICS makes use of network address translation (NAT) mapping individual IP address of local computer (virtual machine)
to unused port number in the TCP/IP stack of ICS host computer. For more information about ICS, please refer to the article here.
Internet Connection Sharing (From Wikipedia)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_Connection_Sharing
To achieve this in the Hyper-V environment, please follow the steps below:
Demo configurations:
Hyper-V Host: Windows Server 2012 R2
IP address of the Wireless NIC: 192.168.0.100/24
Virtual Machine (Windows Server 2012 R2): 192.168.1.100/24
1. Create the Internal Virtual Switch (Figure 1).
Figure 1: Create the Internal Virtual Switch
2. Connect your virtual machine to the new virtual switch (Figure 2).
Figure 2: Assign the Internal Virtual Switch to the VM
3. Find the wireless NIC with internet access then share it with the Internal Virtual Switch (Figure 3).
Figure 3: Share the wireless NIC
4. Change the IP address of the Virtual Switch and assign the IP address as the Default Gateway for the Virtual Machine (Figure 4).
Figure 4. IP configurations
After that, your virtual machine can have the Internet access (Figure 5).
Figure 5: Access the Internet
Note: ICS provides the DHCP service by default. After sharing wireless NIC, the Virtual Switch will get an IP address automatically (192.168.137.1). If DHCP is enabled in your VM, it will get
an IP address within the same subnet from ICS host computer, also the Gateway and DNS.

While this was a requirement with earlier versions of HYPER-V there is only one scenario where this would be required, and that is when your VMs MUST share the same IP address as the management OS.
That is the only scenario where 'sharing' of a connection would be required.
Since Client Hyper-V has been introduced with Windows 8 / Server 2012, wireless NICs have been supported.

    1. Yes. You can install Windows 7 natively using Boot Camp Assistant or you can install Windows 7 in a virtual machine using Parallels, Fusion, or VirtualBox
    2. If installed using Boot Camp Assistant Windows 7 uses all your computer's resources just as OSx does. If installed using a VM Windows 7 will share the computer's resources with OSx.
    3. A Boot Camp partition is separate from the OSx partition. The VMs allow sharing of files across partitions since both OS are running at the same time.
    4. No, not 100%.
    5. Too broad a question. Be specific about what feature you are asking about or search the Internet for comparisons. I use both and find they both work well.

  • Hyper-V could not replicate changes for virtual machine 'machinename': The connection with the server was terminated abnormally (0x00002EFE).

I have a 3 node cluster that has replica setup to replicate to another cluster off-site.
Suddenly one of the servers is not replicating with the error:
Hyper-V could not replicate changes for virtual machine 'machinename': The connection with the server was terminated abnormally (0x00002EFE). (Virtual Machine ID CC0FD4CC-F9B7-4C68-ABE8-B7D52A87899F)
All other servers are replicating fine so there cannot be a permissions or connectivity issue between the 2 clusters.
This server has 2TB of data so I'd rather not have to start the replication again.
    Does anyone have any pointers?
    Thanks.

    Hi drensta,
Based on my knowledge , "hyper-v replica broker " is needed for failover cluster replica .

  • Having trouble accessing internet with new wireless WRT54...

Having trouble accessing internet with new wireless WRT54G. Used easylink to read existing router BEFSR41 which works great to westell modem provided by Verizon. When connect new router Easylink configures WRT54G but when trying to connect to internet...fails. All lites indicate good. Not using wireless device yet, just the wired ethernet. Router set up as DHCP.
I keep going back to old router and works great every time. Help!

Thanks for response, however I tried setting unit to 192.168.2.1 (leaving DHCP) to no avail. I put my old unit (BEFSR41) back in and I'm back up. I need to sit back and decide which way to go on this. Perhaps it's defective and I should return it.

  • Virtual Machines lose access to network

We have continual problems with losing network connectivity to the virtual machines hosted on a Hyper-V host (the host is running Hyper-V Server 2012 R2), it goes down 2 – 3 times per week.
    Situation:
All 3 Windows 2008 R2 virtual machines on the host lose connectivity to the outside world at the same random time (they are the only 3 on the host).
When this occurs the host can still ping the 3 virtual machines and the host is reachable.
When this occurs the 3 virtual machines can ping the host and each other, but nothing else outside of the host (request timed out followed by destination host unreachable)
Nothing in the hardware or Windows event logs on the host indicates there is a problem. No indications of issues in the VM event logs either.
Restarting the virtual machines does not fix the issue
Brand new HP hardware, Broadcom nic drivers were upated early on
VMQ is disabled on the VM's
We are not using nic teaming or clustering
Restarting the host temporarily resolves the problem (during the restart the vms are just placed in a saved state).
The host is running Hyper-V Server 2012 R2
The switch ports that the 2 network cables are plugged into (1 for RDP access to host and 1 for the VM traffic) show no errors on the switch.
This sounds like an issue with the Virtual switch but I can't find anything in the logs that gives me a hint.

Thank you for this post.  I have had similar issues with the following configuration
5 Node Fail Over Cluster - 5 HP DL580-G7 Servers
    Two NIC Teams Configured
4 1 GBPS NIC's - Two Native to the integrated 4 Port on the mother board and Two in an expansion card
    - The Integrated NICS are HP NC 375 I (Two ports are 1 GPBS and Two are 10 GBPS)
    - The expansion NICS are HP 332T adapters
All four of the 1 GBPS NICS are teamed - this is the team the Virtual Switch for all the VM's is using
Both of the 10 GBPS NICS are teamed
The Load Balancing for both teams is set to switch independent and dynamic
Only two of the hosts are experiencing issues with the Guest VM's losing connection
The OS is Server 2012R2 Data Center Full Install
All recommended hot fixes and updates for a fail over cluster have been applied
All HP Firmware Updates have been applied (Current Through June 2014)
Setting the VMQ to disabled appears to have resolved this issue for me, I will continue to monitor until I am comfortable moving production Guests back to the affected Hyper-V Hosts.
I noted while attempting to set the VMQ to disable that only the 332T Adapters were set to true in the first place

  • Computer tend to freeze when accessing internet with D-Link dir-655 router

I recently bought a D-Link dir-655 router and since then my computer tend to freeze up completely when accessing internet. This also happens when certain programs access internet. Otherwise I am usually using Internet Explorer or Opera.
I've found that there are many who experience problems with D-Link router, that they may have problems with certain network card. Anyone who can say if this is a known issues and if it there is a solution or if it is better to buy another router?

    Hi, Ernst:
Would you consider backing up your files and doing a system recovery?
Maybe the OS has some corrupt registry files or something.
If you recover and then it still does that, your only choice looking at the motherboard is a PCIe gigabit ethernet adapter which would be relatively easy to install, or you could even get a USB ethernet adapter and not even have to open the case.
See if there is a setting to disable the onboard NIC if you have to add a network card.
I would rule out all software problems before buying hardware.
If you want to try some other malware program, I recommend the free Kapersky rescue disk. You burn the file to a CD and boot from it.  It scans the drive and deletes any malware or virus files it finds without the PC being in windows. A lot of times viruses and malware can't be removed when windows is running.
Link to the download and instuctions for use is below. I like to use the graphic interface rather than the text interface.

    Hi,
I would suggest you to check the driver site of toshiba

search for your machine and download the wlan drivers. If you dont know which one you need just download all of them and install em, one of that drivers MUST work. ;)

  • HT201358 How to use MAC as Virtual machine to access parallelly

I'm planning to buy MAC, How can I use it as a virtual machine for three users parallely with different user name and password.

    http://macs.about.com/od/usingyourmac/qt/Mac-Screen-Sharing.htm
OS X 10.8 allows users to connect to individual screen sharing sessions. You will need a VNC application for your Windows system.
Since this is not a question about Apple Remote Desktop, which is an application from Apple for managing networked Macs, should you have further questions I'd suggest you ask in the OS X 10.8 forum.

  • Using 9500 to access internet with laptop

I have a basic laptop that is not connected to the internet. Is it possible to use the 9500 to connect my laptop to the internet.

Absolutely. It is even quite straightforward and well-documented. You'll need to set up internet access on your phone first - your service provider will likely tell you how to do this.
Once that's done you'll be able to use the phone just like any old modem. But, you'll need to install drivers onto your pc first. The drivers are downloadable from this site, and are also included in the PC Suite application (also downloadable from this site). In order to connect the phone and the laptop together you have a choice of what technology to use. The choices are bluetooth (good - phone needs to be in same room as laptop), infrared (not quite so good - phone needs to be within a foot or so of the laptop and the Infrared ports on both laptop and phone need to be in line-of-sight with each other) or using the usb cable that came with the phone (good, except you need to carry the cable with you). I seem to remember that the PC Suite application takes a lot of the pain out of setting all this stuff up for you. Plus the phone manual (again, downloadable from this site) will help. One final thing - if you're planning on using the phone just to dial up your ISP, you're talking very slow connection speeds. It might be worth looking at gprs or edge. You don't need to do anything with the phone, just talk to your cellular service provider to get the service enabled. HTH, Pete

  • Can anybody help me to access Internet with my existing network

Dear All Recently I purchased new WRT 54G wireless router. Also I have tied up with new ISP to give wireless internet access to some of the my Higher authority employees only. My office network setup is as shown below Local Ip range : 172.18.0.0 to 172.18.2.254 subnet mask : 255.255.0.0 Default gateway : 172.18.0.50 Wireless Router configured as : 1) configured all ISP settings 2) configured LAN site setting( But I had to setup lan as 192.160.1.X i.e the required by ISP ). 3) connected ISP lan port of WRT54G to cable coming from ISP Modem 4) Connected Local port( any one of 4 ports) to my existing switch(existing LAN----172.18.x.x network) Now suppose I configure user laptop to access new ISP internet through wireless.I have done following setting Wireless LAN setting : Ip address : 192.168.1.2( I can give any IP of network 192.168.1.x) subnet mask:255.255.255.0 Default gateway :192.168.1.1 DNS : Automatic I can access the new ISP internet without any problem with WRT54g router. But the problem is while accessing the new ISP internet( Using 192.168.1.x/255.255.255.0/192.168.1.1 network),Also I want to access my existing network( 172.18.0.0/255.255.0.0/172.18.0.50). Since I am very weak in routing the network, can anybody help me out to do routing setting in linksys WRT54g router so as to access my New ISP internet using existing network( 172.18.0.0/255.255.0.0/172.18.0.50). Please help me anybody

O.K. Still the crucial question remains whether you want the separation of the ISPs enforced or not, i.e. do you actively want to prevent someone to switch to the other ISP simply by reconfiguring some settings on the computer or not?
If you don't want to enforce the policy and it is enough to just use different IP settings on different computers then this would probably be the easiest solution.
If you can, install a DHCP server (e.g. on a Linux box) inside your network which does the DHCP address assignments. That way you can dynamically assign the proper addresses to the computers.
You can then assign the WRT an LAN IP address inside the 172.18 subnet. The DHCP server assigns anyone addresses inside your 172.18 subnet. However, you configure different gateway and dns server addresses depending on the computer. You configure the MAC addresses of those 'preferred' laptops the gateway address of the WRT and the public DNS servers of the new ISP. All other computers you assign the old gateway address of the old router and the DNS server addresses of the first ISP.
If you don't want to install your own DHCP server you can assign either pool static IP addresses, i.e. assign all preferred laptops static IP address including the gateway address of WRT and use DHCP only for the normal computers or vice versa.
What won't work reliably is to run two DHCP servers on both routers and connect the LAN of both together. You'll end up with computers picking up the wrong IP address from the wrong DHCP server.
Again, this separation only happens due to the different configuration of the computers. If anyone can freely reconfigure the computer he has it is easily possible to change the gateway address and thus swap the ISP. But as long as people comply with the rules it works.
If you want to enforce the separation you will have to install another router between the two gateway router. This third router passes traffic from the WRT subnet for the 172.18 subnet and accepts the return traffic. In the opposite direction the router does not forward traffic. You should even be able to use a standard NAT gateway router and hook up the internet port to the 172.18 subnet and the LAN port to the WRT. You then configure a static route on the WRT to forward packets for 172.18 subnet to the third router. If the third router does not NAT then you have to configure another route on the first router to forward traffic for WRT subnet (192.168.1.*) to the third router as well.

Does anybody else out there seem to have problems launching the console to get into a VM Guest? When we do, we get the login screen and then nothing. It doesn't appear to be firewall related. We had similiar issues in 2.2.
    Any tricks on this?

We had similiar issues in 2.2.There is no direct VNC access between your client and the Oracle VM Servers any more. Ensure you have port 15901 open from the client desktop to the Oracle VM Manager machine and that you have all the VNC ports open from Oracle VM Manager to the Oracle VM Servers. We now proxy VNC via the Manager for improved security and simpler configurations.
Also, you will still need to install the tightvnc-java RPM separately, as described in the documentation, to ensure the Java VNC console is installed. This needs to be installed on your Oracle VM Manager server.
