Enabling BIOS caching.

Sorry for the noob question, but I was curious about enabling the BIOS cache feature. Is there a noticable performance gain? Is it okay to do from a security standpoint?
I have my BIOS backed up on a floppy as I learned the hard way a long time ago, but maybe that's what makes me nervous about enabling the cache feature. So, who uses this and have you had any problems with it?? I would like to try it, but want to check the knowledge pool here before I do something I would regret.

I would kindly like to disagree,
The only thing about that is, sure if you can cache your system BIOS to memory it should be faster.  But XP/2000 Don't rely on the system BIOS like old legacy OS's (Win3.1, 9x, OS/2) do and in fact rarely at all ever make a call to it.  So while you may see a tiny AND I MEAN TINY shred of performance, overall you are slowing your machine because you're wasting memory on something that's hardly ever used.
The similar situation with VIDEO BIOS Cacheable.  While this sounds like a great idea for improving total system performance, video memory is fast enough that it usually outperforms system memory.  In addition as far as I'm aware (please correct me if I'm wrong) XP/2K GARTs handle video on their own independant of the actual video BIOS, as such the memory bandwidth would be better spent elsewhere than caching the Video BIOS.

    Hi,
    By default, write caching is disabled on a disk that contains the Active Directory database (Ntds.dit). Also, write caching is disabled on a disk that contains the Active Directory log files. By doing this, you enhance the reliability of the Active
    Directory files.
    Thus if it is a DC, try to move the Active Directory database and the Active Directory log files off of a disk in which you need to enable write caching.

  • What is the pupose of the Enable Document Cache option?

    >I miss information of optimal setting for the cache. What is the ideal size and what is that setting depended on? Memory size? Raw file size?
    The default size is 1GB, but it can be set much higher. When the number of previews held in the cache reaches the limit of the cache size older previews get dropped. This is the reason given for making the cache large. However, the problem with this approach is that the ACR cache preview is in addition to to the Lr preview created for the Library module. So, a larger cache will mean that even more disk space is used storing duplicate previews. If you're using a slower computer and are in the habit of quickly scanning through large number of files in the Develop module then a larger cache "might" help, otherwise anywhere between one and five GB should be more than adequate.

  • Kernal message: Could not enable ARP cache poisoning detection.

    Looking at system files in Console, for another issue, I came across this kernal message, which occurs at start-up: "*Could not enable ARP cache poisoning detection. Your computer will not be protected*."
    It's an intel Mac Mini running Leopard ( 10.5.8 ). I have Norton Antivirus for Mac 11 installed (I know, I know), which has ARP cache poisoning turned on in its "vulnerability protection" prefs. I've gotten no warnings of attacks from Norton, just this Kernal message at start-up. I've seen this issue on a couple of other threads with no answer or solution (except advice to Google it... duh!), already archived and accepting no new posts... so no help there.
    Is this ARP cache poisoning detection part of the OS, and if so, why is it not being enabled? Is there a way to enable it? Could the kernal message be telling me that the Norton protection is bugged and not working, or would it be OS related. The mini is a wired connection (ethernet), and there's one other laptop (macbook 10.4.11) using the modem/router ( Actiontec GT 701-wg) via wireless airport. I haven't seen this message on the laptop in console or system logs, but haven't looked hard.
    Someone, please respond with a knowledgeable answer, for me and for others who've asked here and on other forums with no helpful public answers given.

    Doing a "erase and install" of Leopard, thus dumping Norton AV 11, and then installing Snow Leopard... I haven't seen this Kernal message come up again, yet. I'll assume it was some buggy Norton related thing that cropped up after an OS update, but who knows. I'll leave the question open for a bit, in case anyone else has had this issue and found a reason or solution, and wants to share.

  • Measuring "performance" improvement when enabling blob caching

    Hi.
    Is there a way to measure improvement/disimprovment when you enable blob caching in a Sharepoint 2013 farm for the user experience? Will it show when measuring page
    download time?
    Wish you a good day!
    Simon

    I would use Fiddler2 which will provide you with an overall time. One of the largest improvements for blobcaching is that it tells the client to cache the data so blobs aren't re-requested.

  • Enable Folder Cache - Pls urgent Help needed

    I WANTED TO TEST HOW IT WORKED THE "ENABLE FOLDER CACHE" ,SO I CLICKED ON THAT FIELD.
    (AT THE CONTENT AREA LEVEL AND ALSO IN A COUPLE OF FOLDERS).
    BUT TO MY SURPRISE NOW BOTH FOLDERS DON'T SEEM TO WORK PROPERLY. IT ALWAYS SHOW ME AN OLD VERSION OF THE FOLDER.
    I UNCLICKED THE FOLDER CACHE OPTION (AT CONTENT AREA LEVEL AND FOLDER LEVEL) BUT STILL IT DOES NOT SHOW ME THE LATEST VERSION OF THE FOLDER.
    ONLY IF I GO TO "EDIT FOLDER" I CAN SEE THE CORRECT CONTENTS OF THE FOLDER, BUT WHEN I RETURN TO "VIEW FOLDER" IT SHOWS ME AN OLD VERSION.
    I REALLY DON'T KNOW WHAT I AM DOING WRONG OF IF THERE IS A BUG SOMEWHERE.
    I WILL APPRECIATE ANY HELP.
    TKS!!

    Maria,
    Try turning caching off. Go to the Portal Home page, Administer Tab, Listener Gateway Settings. In Cache Settings, set "Enable PLSQL Caching" to No.
    If that fixes the problem, set it back to Yes and see if the problem continues.
    Also, what type of items do your folders contain? What changes are you making to those items that aren't showing up?
    BTW, the folder cache is always invalidated if you make any change to a folder. So even though you turn caching on, you will always see fresh content. There is no good reason to NOT turn caching on (except when you run into problems like yours, which shouldn't be happening). See the white paper on OTN called Page Generation and Assembly Scalability in Oracle9iAS Portal.

  • How to enable DVM cache policy in soa suite 11G

    Hello,
    Can someone describe how to enable DVM cache policy in soa suite 11G?. Also how can i configure the cache policy to load values to cache at server startup? I have very large DVM which i want to load to cache for faster access.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
    DVM cache policy is lazy load. there is no option to preload the cache with server startup currently. However this would be affecting only the first request the susequent requests are serviced from cache.
    HTH..
    appologies for reaching on this late.

  • What's the implication of 'enabling invalidation caching'?

    Hi,
    From the web.xml file after I have finished deployment for the jpdk.ear file, I found the following lines:
    <servlet>
    <!--The following parameter enables invalidation caching-->
    <init-param>
    <param-name>invalidation_caching</param-name>
    <param-value>true</param-value>
    </init-param>
    </servlet>
    What's the effect of setting this parameter?
    Thanks for any replies and help!

    This is a required configuration step if your portlets want to use invalidation based caching.
    The PDK contains sample portlets using invalidation based caching, that's why this entry in web.xml.
    You can learn more about the steps you need to perform to leverage Oracle9iAS Web Cache's invalidation based caching in the Setting up the Invalidation Caching Sample PDK article.

  • Is it possible to enable Web Cache gzip compression for 9iAS Disco Viewer?

    Hi,
    Sorry for repeating this question. But it's very urgent and we don't have any idea yet how to solve / work around it:
    To keep it short: Is it possible to use Web Cache gzip compression for pages rendered by 9iAS Discoverer Viewer???
    Our scenario: We have some Discoverer Worksheets which we want to access by ISDN dial in (64 kbit/sec). An average page needs 2 minutes only for sending the html/javascript output rendered by Disco Viewer to the client browser.
    To speed up the response time when users use this slow connection, we want to activate Web Cache gzip compression.
    The problem: But even when we enable Web Cache for Discoverer (configuration.xml and Web Cache rules), Web Cache doesn't compress pages generated by Discoverer Viewer. We found out that the generated responses contain the "content-disposition" HTTP-Header entry. Are we correct that this is the reason why there is no gzip compression? AND DOES ANYONE KNOW A WORKAROUND (p.e. configure Disco not to add the content-disposition http header)???
    Best regards,
    Matthias Scherer

    Matthias,
    Have you raised this as a TAR with Oracle Support? If you've got a specific question, and you need a definitive answer, raising a TAR is the best way to proceed.

    When you set the caching rules, you can also specify whether or not you want the pages to be compressed. Web Cache compresses html pages and relies on the accept-encoding: gzip from the client header to determine whether or not to send the content compressed.

  • Enable SSL cache for inbound requests to dispatcher

    Hi All,
    I have the following problem.
    Usecase: Serve a few pages of the site via SSL.
    I have enabled SSL on apache webserver such that while accessing certain pages, via mod_rewrite requests are made through SSL.
    CQ Publish <---- http ----> Webserver <---- https ----> End user
    Webserver/dispatcher and publish server communicate via "http" only.
    Problem: Since the protected page is initially not present in the cache, accessing it via https returns 404. How should I enable caching of pages accessed via "https"?
    Thanks
    Ashish

    I had missed to include the following section under the virtualhost SSL setup in httpd.conf file.
    <IfModule disp_apache2.c>
                    SetHandler dispatcher-handler
           </IfModule>
    This resolves the issue.
