Enabling Jumbo Frames in Solaris 10 with Intel NIC

Hello all! I have a Solaris 10 machine with dual Intel NICs that I wish to enable jumbo frames on, but I am unable to find any clear guidance on how to do so. Could someone either provide guidance on this or point me in the proper direction?

Enabling Jumbo Frames in CISCO Switch

Hi,
I have tried to enable jumbo frames by:
Go to Port Management >> Port Settings
Enable Jumbo Frames. Click Apply.
Save configuration and reboot
After that I try to verify that jumbo frames is really working by looking at the Status and Statistics >> RMON >> Statistics.
It seems that the page only shows frame size of up to 1632 Bytes. Does this mean that the Jumbo Frames are not working? Is this the correct way to verify that Jumbo frames are enabled?

Hi,
This setting allows the frames to pass on the switch, nothing more. The rest of the devices needs to capable to send and receive such frames as well. You need to configure the NICs and possibly applications to do this.
Make sure all communicating devices are capable of jumbo frames. If you mix them you will have trouble.

Enable Jumbo Frame Support On UCS

Could someone direct me to the documentation for the proper way to enable jumbo frame support on UCS? I'm trying to troubleshoot a problem and have configured MTU of 9000 from ESX running on a blade to an NFS server off a Nexus 5k. I have good documentation for configuring jumbo frame support on the Nexus 5k and on ESX but nothing really specific for UCS.

I have been able to ping (with large payload) the NFS host interface from a temporary vlan interface on the N5k. I cannot do the same to the ESX hosts or between hosts.

What network adapter are you using? M81KR or the M71KR's or any other?
The MTU is set on a per CoS basis in UCS. If you do not have any QoS policy defined for the vNIC that is going to the vSwitch, then the traffic is going to Best-Effort Class. All you need to do to enable jumbo frames is to enter the MTU to be 9000 in the MTU pulldown for whatever class the traffic is going to.

SRW2008 - How To Enable Jumbos Frames?

Title says it all....
How do you enable jumbo frames on an SRW2008?
The data sheet says it supports jumbo frames, but the manual does not say how to enable, and I did not find it in the Web GUI.
It just occured to me (light dawns on marblehead) - perhaps this needs to be done via the CLI?

Adjust MTU on my Time Capsule to enable Jumbo Frames?

Is there a way to adjust the MTU setting on my Time Capsule to enable Jumbo Frames? I have the most current Airport Utilities and firmware on my TC.

There is no way to adjust MTU on either WAN or LAN ports on the TC. At least AFAIK.. Apple do not allow users to access that depth of control.
Get a gigabit switch and plug everything into that if you want jumbo frames for local network.. Jumbo frames will obviously cause slow down on the router to the internet and I guess is why Apple doesn't use them.

Is it possible to enable jumbo frames on vmxnet3 under Solaris 10?

Solaris 10 10/09 running on ESX4. VMware tools are installed. ifconfig vmxnet3s0 mtu <value> only works for mtu values of 1500 or less. /kernel/drv/vmxnet3s.conf gives no hints related to jumbo frames.
I've come up empty searching the net. Ideas?

According to this, it looks like you have to set the host for jumbo frames (which makes sense), then set the guest to use it, then set the guest OS to use it...

Very slow network performance with Intel NIC when TCP Large Send Offload is enabled

I have a Windows 2008 server with two NIC's (Intel PRO/1000 PL and Intel PRO/1000 PM), and one virtual external switch connected to each NIC.
With the 01/14/08 network driver, I get very low throughput on both NIC's (~10KB/sec when downloading from my server when it should be around 11MB/sec).
I've found that disabling "TCP Large Send Offload (IPv4)" on the virtual switch and "Large Send Offload v2 (IPv4)" on the physical adapters solves the problem.
Is this a bug in the driver?

2 years later, I was able to get that machine to work with Hyper-V under Windows Server 2008 R2, but only after disabling everything that had anything to do with TCP or IP offloading. I think that I had to turn off 4 settings on one controller,
and 5 settings on the other controller. Once that was done, everything worked flawlessly. It is very apparent that the Virtual Controllers do not properly use many of the features of non-Intel devices (not all Intel devices work either), and
that Hyper-V does not completely uninstall if you remove it.
If you have any problems, start turning off the features that your adapter supports, until it starts working. You'll need to weight the cost of replacing the controller with a fully supported controller, of which there is no list, or using your existing
controller at a capacity lower than it physically supports. This has been an elusive issue with Microsoft's Virtual Server projects since they were first in beta, so don't expect a fix anytime soon.
P.S. For those who don't know, the settings are on the actual device and can be changed in the Device Manager. If you are still having trouble after turning off all the settings, then you will need to replace the controller(s) with a different
make/model.

How to enable "Jumbo Frame" at RV320 LAN ports?

I'm sorry about my silly question, where is the option to turn on the "Jumbo Frame" or allow to adjust MTU at the RV320 LAN ports?
I can't found that in the Web management interface, will it just take the 9Kb MTU packet and no need to set?
Looks like the MTU settings is only available at those internet ports or USB interface.

You won't find any LAN side MTU settings on any of the small business routers. The LAN ports are simply layer 2 switch ports, which means they will either forward or drop the larger packets. They have to be gigabit ports as well, Jumbo Frames do not work with anything less. Unfortunately I cannot find anything specific to this model, and I am unable to test it since I don't have any Jumbo capable NICs.
So your best bet is really to just give it a try. The switch ports on the router will either forward or drop the packets, and anyone going out to the internet will either lower their packet size using MTU discovery, or the router will fragment the packets down to a size appropriate for the WAN link.
I wish I could be more specific, but without being able to test it that is the most info I can give you right now.

Jumbo Frames within Solaris 10 zones and multiple interfaces...

We have Jumbo Frames working in the Global Zone, and have the MaxFrameSize=3,3,3 etc...
We also have our AGGR's built correctly and defined aggr1:1 and aggr1:2
the problem is on boot-up, if all the name files (hostname.aggr1 and hostname.aggr1:1) are defined in the /etc directory, then you can't start the zones....?
and if you place the files in the /export/zones/<machinename>/root/etc/ directory, than the interfaces do not start-up automatically..... ?
So If I want all the interfaces in the global zone to be seen by the other zones, and for the interfaces to come live when the zones are booted.... where do the hostname.interface files live....???

I understand where you're coming from from a technical perspective. But there is a way you could work around it.
For argument's sake, zones a+b with e1000g0 - e1000g3
From an implementation perspective, what's to stop you from:
e1000g0 / e1000g1 shared between all
e1000g2 plumbed at global, only assigned to zone a.
e1000g3 plumbed at global, only assigned to zone b.
You can certainly have an empty interface file (i.e. cp /dev/null /etc/hostname.e1000g2 ; cp /dev/null /etc/hostname.e1000g3). The interface will plumb but have no IP information configured.
This doesn't give truly exclusive interfaces to either zone, but it operates effectively as though it were.
Warning: I haven't actually tested this, but I see no reason that it wouldn't work.

ISCSI boot with Intel NICs added to windows 2008 r2 routing table causes non iscsi traffic to attempt default routes on iscsi networks

I have a server with Intel 82576 Gigabit Dual Port Nics. I have configured them to use iSCSI boot the primary looks to 10.0.0.1/24 and the secondary looks to 10.0.1.1/24. The target is configured correctly. Everything boots as expected.
I have added the MPIO feature and configured MPIO for the iscsi initiator as per: http://blogs.technet.com/b/migreene/archive/2009/08/29/3277914.aspx.
My issue is that the iSCSI networks show up in the routing table like so:
I did not configure a default route in the Intel setup utility:
I tried to explicitly remove the 0.0.0.0 entry and leave blank, with no change. As you can see with the above routing table traffic attempts to travel over these routes:

A ping to the outside world first attempts on 10.0.0.x/24 network, then on 10.0.1.x/24 network and then finally on the network the traffic should go over. I don't want my iSCSI traffic to ever show up with a default route. How do I get rid of it?

route delete 0.0.0.0 deletes all default routes, then I have to add back in the "valid default route" of 192.168.100.6.
I would like to not have to do a route delete though.

So I've sort of given up on fixing the gateway assignment in the route for iSCSI boot. I configured a DHCP server to give out the information required by iSCSI boot and configured the network cards to use DHCP for their configuration. I insured
that my DHCP server gave out no default gateway entry. However, I still got the undesired routes in the routing table. This makes me assume that there isn't a "fix" for it, only the workaround.
Here is the script I run on each iSCSI Boot initiator (you would obviously change the ip number to suit your environment):

Then I added a task in “task scheduler” of "administrative tools" that ran as the user “system” “when the computer starts” that runs this script.

App-V 5 SP2 install issue with Intel NIC Driver 11.16.96.0

When deploying App-V 5 SP2 using SCCM 2007 it will install with no problem on the machine. However, when the user reboots after the install the machine will blue screen. The user then reboots again and machine comes up to the desktop. However,
the App-V service is not running and is still set to automatic.
Looking at the Blue Screen dmp file the common theme looks to be a conflict with an Intel NIC driver version 11.16.96.0. Machines running an older version of the driver do not experience the issue with the blue screen after reboot and the App-V service
starts with no issues.
Has anyone seen this issue before?

I read following phrase in configuration guide of Nexus 5020
The Cisco Nexus 5000 Series switch is a Layer 2 device. This means it does not fragment frames. As a result,
the switch cannot have two ports in the same Layer 2 domain with different maximum transmission units
(MTUs). A per-physical Ethernet interface MTU is not supported. Instead, the MTU is set according to the

How can I enable 16 outs from Logic with Intel Mac Pro?

I am a bit new to the digital output world! I have a Digi002 with Logic 7 and I have a Behringer A/D converter box to recieve digital output using optical cable. My question is this: I can only see 8 normal stereo outputs plus additional 9-10 output. Is there a command in Logic (as per the old "enable 16 in/outs in 5.5)to allow the greyed out extra outputs to work? or I am being very stupid and not enabling some command on the Mac?

I see you're using a Behringer A/D converter. I had one of these once. It made a lot of noise: crackling, pops etc. I know that was the cause as they only happened on those 8 tracks.
I may have had a lemon, but if you get similar problems, (and I hope you don't) I have changed to the Alesis AI3 and now have no problems, it might be worth you making a mental note.

Tried checking an Airport Setting with the Utility and it discovers the Airport Express (non-gige) but cannot retrieve the configuration. I manage the Airport via ethernet. Changing back to 1500 MTU fixes the issue. Is this expected? The odd thing is that printing works fine to the printer attached to the Airport even at 9000 MTU.

T61 and Intel 82566mm Jumbo Frame Capable?

I'm trying to achieve the near 100MB/sec performance with my NAS but cannot seem to get past 15MB/sec with 25MB/sec bursts on my gigabit LAN. Do I need to enable jumbo frames for this to work? If so, is the Intel 82566 gigabit NIC even capable of jumbo frames or is this an OS dependent issue? In addition, does my switch also need to have jumbo frame support or is it built into gigabit? And lastly, how would this adversely affect my 802.11n clients connecting to my server - are jumbo frames something 802.11n clients capable of?

check BIOS / configuration and see if INTERNAL LAN is enbaled or disabled. i had this happen when my wireless and lan were not working. fixed it in bios.
