Enabling multicast on Wireless

Greetings
I know it's possible but I wonder if it is advisable to configure multicast on wireless network.
We have 3 WLC 5508 with 7.0.98.0 code and Base license
we have over 160 AP's running N
the clients are connected in a great big address pool - with possibility of 8000+ host ip's
we currently have over 1000+ clients connecting
Management expects wireless to work like a wired network.
They want to enable multicast for applications like Apple Bonjour and other programs and also for streaming video.
I am of the opinion it's not the greatest of ideas.
I see people enabling multicast but not on the scale with the user base we have.
any advise

I have enabled multicast on wireless before, but not on this scale.  First of all the idea of having so many clients in the same IP range doesnt seem a good idea regardless of multicast.  Assuming you set up multicast on the WLC and LAN correctly, then having a lot of receivers is what multicast was designed for (however wireless multicast performance isnt as good as wired, not sure about the new features in WLC v7).  The questions to ask is how many IPmc sources you might have?  If there are a lot of sources, then this will be a problem rather than how many receivers there are.

Yes, but not in all cases with it provide your with an "Open NAT" condition that some on-line gaming require. However, for most Xbox LIVE access, it should work just fine.

  • Is there any way to get ipad 2 mirroring (beta ios 5) to work with unicast?  The school won't enable multicast for traffic concerns on a many AP wireless network.

I have the iPad 2 mirroring working in my classroom with my own personal wireless router and an apple tv 2.  We would like to deploy several iPad 2's to teachers for instruction, all using mirroring.  The school district wireless network available throughout the complex has many access points and has multicasting turned off.  They are afraid to enable it because of traffic concerns - many wireless devices all sending everything to every AP on the district wireless network.  Is there any way to come up with an acceptable solution (unicasting?) that will only route traffic to the devices connected to a single access point on the network (the same one the ipad 2 and apple tv are connected to) without sending it to all the access points on the district wireless network?  Short of every teacher having an independent wireless router in each of their rooms (which could still potentially interfere with the district wireless), I don't currently have a solution.   I've heard the network guys through around terms like multicasting, unicasting, igmp, etc.  I don't want to choke down the district wireless either, but there must be a solution to this.  I could easily see 40 teachers in the complex all using iPad 2s mirroring through apple tvs attached to projectors all going on at the same time, but there might only be 3 or 4 on each access point.

  • SGE2000:how to enable Multicasting?

    Hello there,
we have a server deploying images via pxe to several clients the same time and want to enable muticasting at our sge2000 switch. i tried to read the help/support manuals of the switch concerning multicasting but i have no clue (and don't want to make things worse too *g*) - help/support manual of the sge2000 switch just explains functions with itself a la "to enable xx you have to enable xx" :-(
    the scenario is the following
we have 15 vlans bound to ports 1-15 and another vlan (backbone) at port 19-22
our pxe server is in the backbone vlan and i want to allow distribution to vlan 1-15.
i would really appreciate any help or hint/tutorial on how to get this thing done.
    regards
    mark

    Hi Dave,
i've read the part in the manual (found it in a previous search) but it is not helpful. the corresponding topics just explain how to enable e.g. IGMP Snooping or how to create Multicast Groups etc.
What i'm missing is an explanation what to do to achieve my goal (post above). do i have to enable IGMP Snooping? Do i have to create those Groups etc. ?  And what VLANs should i group together?...
Can't find any helpful information for this topic :-(
p.s. the switch itself is in layer-3 mode (if thats what you were guessing)

  • Playstation 3 Wireless Network Enable Crashes WRT54G Wireless Router

I am trying to set up my wireless connection on my Playstation 3 via my WRT54G wireless router.  Whenever I start at the beginning and select Enable for Wireless Connection, the wired end of my router which is attached to my cable modem crashes.  My host wired PC loses it internet connection.  As I proceed with my Playstation 3 Wireless Network setup, the PS3 can still wirelessly see my router.  I do an automatic configuration, but the router is unable to assign a TCP/IP address to the PS3.  My main problem is that the PS#crashes my router the moment I even enable the wireless connection.  Any ideas?

I don’t think of anything else that a Firmware on this router. Download the latest firmware for this from http://www.linksys.com/download and Upgrade that to your router. Reset and reconfigure it, reduce the MTU to 1365, assign a static IP on PS3 and forward the ports needed by PS3 for this IP address. Now you should able to connect to this router wirelessly.

  • Enabling time capsule wireless causes high latency.

We are currently running a basic setup of a cable modem connected to the time capsule. There are 3 computers connected to the time capsule via a wired connection. We have two iphones, a laptop and an apple tv device connected to the time capsule via wireless.
When the wireless is enabled on the time capsule, we experience a minimum of 600 ms ping on any device, running any application, regardless if the device is connected via wired or wireless. When I disable wireless completely via airport, the time capsule restarts. All 3 wired computers after this point are running at about 40-50ms ping.
I first thought maybe one of the wireless devices is downloading an update and causing latency so I left the wireless on for the night. About 12 hours later, no change, still a minimum of 600ms ping.
I changed the wireless password and reset the device. With no wireless clients, the issue still occurs.
I also updated to the most recent firmware (7.6.4)
I might also add that the time capsule is only 14 months old.

Do any of the clients that run from ethernet also have wireless enabled? Can you go around and make sure they are all set to ethernet only .. wireless off.
Test again with just one wired computer.. everything else off.
Do a full factory reset of the TC.. to clear out all the settings and start over.
Use all short names.. say 5-20 characters.. for TC .. for wireless which you will name differently for each band and for the hard disk share name.. ie do not use Apple names, long.. spaces and apostrophe.
Do the ping test again. Ensuring the client has no wireless turned on. If the ping is still bad turn off wireless in the TC to verify it..
Then I suggest you downgrade the TC to 7.6.1 firmware.. you cannot go back further than that.. do another factory reset.. no improvement then good chance the hardware is faulty..
If you have applecare on any product apple should still fix / replace the TC.. sometimes they are generous if a product is just a couple of months over warranty. Ring and ask or take it to apple store for testing.

  • Re: Enabling Security on Wireless Network w/ Windows XP (SP2) laptop?

Currently, security is not enabled on my home network. My wife's Dell is running Windows XP (SP2).
I'm not sure whether to use WPA/WPA2 Personal or just WPA2 in the Wireless Security (of airport Utility) pane for my AEBS? I also have an AX as a remote. Once I set up security for the AEBS, do I have to also set it up for the AX?
Once I have security enabled for the AEBS and the AX, I will have to turn it on for my wife's laptop. I am not sure how to do this, not being a pc guy. Can someone point me in the right direction?
    Thanks.

I have a network with both macs an PCs. I can only make the PCs able to join the network if I use WEP 40 bit security. With WEP 126 bit and WPA the PCs are not able to connect. I think you should be able to use WPA, but then you have to use a password of an exact numbers of characters (I think 13, but I am not sure). I would go for WEP 40 if I were you.
If your airport extreme is the main base sattion, you must set up the security level (WEP 40) and password there. You must add the same information to the AX. When the Dell try to connect to the network, it will be asked for the password. Enter this, and the PC should be connected.

  • How to enable printer for wireless?

From my (1st gen.) iPad I can instruct wireless printing to my HPLaserjet CPI1525nw.
How can I add my HP Laserjet 6MP so that it too will perform wireless printing?

I went to System Pref for Print & Scan, selected the 6MP printer and checked "Share this computer on the network." (Printer sharing is on.)
Then to HP printer Network Diagnostics, followed several steps, including re-starting my cable modem (& AirportExtreme)
When finished, I get "Cannot find server.  This computer appears to have a working internet connection but cannot find "Hewlett-Packard Laserjet 6MP._pdl-datastream._tcp.local.  You may have typed the address incorrectly."
The part ",_pdl.....etc." is totally unfamiliar to me (I didn't type anything)
Location on 6MP is "My Base Station - Computer Room"
At total loss to how get around this and "find Server"

  • Enabling Multicast

    Hello,
I have a Cisco 7603 router, on which I've created a VLAN and assigned an IP address to it. I've also assigned a secondary IP since hosts on this VLAN are not all on one single IP network. The VLAN has had three gigabit ethernet ports associated with it. My question is what would I need to do to allow multicast traffic between a server on one of these ports to clients on another port? The server and clients are all on the same network as the secondary IP address assigned to the VLAN. Thank you for any assistance,
    Bob Kirk

    Here are some of the relevant global settings;
    ip multicast multipath
    no mls ip multicast aggregate
no mls ip multicast non-rpf cef
    mls flow ip destination-source
    mls qos statistics-export interval 300
    mls qos statistics-export delimiter |
    spanning-tree extend system-id
    and some settings particular to the VLAN in question;
    interface Vlan190
    ip address 192.168.1.254 255.255.0.0 secondary
    ip address 192.139.190.1 255.255.255.0
    ip helper-address 192.139.190.19
    no ip redirects
    no ip unreachables
    no ip proxy-arp
    ip pim sparse-dense-mode
    ip igmp snooping querier
    ip cgmp
    Here (to summarize the whole mess) are the IP addresses/masks/gateways of the devices;
    Multicast server (has one NIC);
    Primary - 192.139.190.51/24 gw 192.139.190.1
    Secondary - 192.168.2.253/16 gw 192.168.1.254
    Clients;
    Client 1 - 192.168.2.241/16 gw 192.168.1.254
    Client 2 - 192.168.2.242/16 gw 192.168.1.254
    And the layout: The Server resides on module 3 port Gi3/1 and the clients are on module 3 port Gi3/4. Both ports are set as following;
    interface GigabitEthernet3/x
    description "xxxxx"
    no ip address
    switchport
    switchport access vlan 190
    switchport mode access
    Thank you,
    Bob Kirk

  • What is is the difference between these two command that enable Multicast?

I see that both get used frequently. My WLC does not seem to support the top one:
    config network ap-mcast-mode multicast 239.239.239.239
config network multicast mode multicast 239.239.239.239
    Thanks

Yes, first one may be a old command in previous WLC code versions. No longer supported in newer codes.
You only require 2nd command to configure a multicast group for WLC to use for CAPWAP multicast for APs.

  • Will 2800-400 BIOS update enable 802.11g wireless LAN?

I recently bought a Belkin 54G cardbus wireless adapter for use with my Satellite 2800-400, which has a Windows ME OS.
The setup software wouldn't install a driver, even though ME was said to be supported.
I wrote to Belkin and they told me that it was because the laptop BIOS didn't support 802.11g wireless and that I should update the BIOS. I updated to BIOS version 2 but it didn't make any difference.
I don't know if Belkin's instructions were on the right track or whether they were they just pushing the responsibility as far away from themselves as they could.
Please can anyone tell me if my laptop does support 802.11g wireless, with or without the BIOS upgrade?
    TIA
    Mike

Thanks for the reply. the notebook does support wireless LAN because I can get a 802.11b card to function OK.

Well it's done now so there may be other benefits. Not 802.11g wireless though it seems.

Thanks I'll try to find and contact a service partner.

  • Multicasting for Flexconnect mode

I have requirement to enable multicasting on wireless network.  AP s are on Flexconnect mode. Does Flexconnect mode be enabled for multicast traffic ?

In release 8.0, FlexConnect can join CAPWAP multicast group. The controller should be set to Multicast - Multicast mode for both AP Multicast mode and IPv6 AP Multicast mode.
Note: FlexConnect mode APs will join IPv4 or IPv6 Multicast group if AP Multicast mode is configured as Multicast in release 8.0; however, there will be slight Data through-put degradation impact in the FlexConnect centrally switched scenario compared to AP Multicast mode configured as Unicast.
Note: Smart AP image upgrade does not work on the 7500 controllers when the Master AP is connected over CAPWAPv6.
The following IPv6 specific features are not supported in FlexConnect central switching mode:
    ■Layer 3 Mobility
    ■IPv6 VideoStream
