Enabling shutdown options on KDE with no KDM

ive googled and tried my best, but couldnt find a solution for that - is there any way to allow shutdown/restart options from KDE without using KDM(/GDM/XDM/etc)? on xfce, to enable the shutdown options all that was needed was sudo. but for KDE its not enough... any ideas?

Lone_Wolf:
Actually, i _am_ looking for shutting down the all system - this is what the shutdown option in kde logout dialog allows you to. when using kdm, you can restart (system), shutdown (system), logout (session). without kdm, only logout is allowed, which is not enough, mainly for a live cd user who most likely would like to restart his system (or at least shutdown...).
Since i dislike the idea of having an icon on the desktop todo the shutdown, i might make an icon on the traybar, but i really think that the shutdown/restart should be part of the kde-desktop and not kdm. imho though...
[edit]on a second thought, maybe i'll just use kdm and thats it. i dont have the time nor energy to play with this stuff any longer. [/edit]

  • Option of KDE/Openbox in kdm unavailable

I realize there is a desktop environments section, but I figure that I'd fit in here better, seeing that I installed Arch yesterday.
Just in case anyone wants to link me the wiki, that's what I followed to get to this point.
So basically, when I boot up in kdm, the options for KDE and Openbox are both there, and I can login (the term eludes me) to each of them, and they work and whatever.  However, KDE/Openbox is just not there.  I have also tried changing the ~/.xinitrc file to exec openbox-kde-session and "xinit /usr/bin/openbox-kde-session", but (as far as I know) it merely boots into KDE.
I may be wrong about openbox-kde-session and am just not noticing anything different between openbox-kde-session and kde, but there really seems to be no difference.
    How do I resolve this?

Ah, ok.  That would make sense, since I don't plan on using KDE's default window manager anyway.  Thanks.

  • [SOLVED] Can not shutdown/restart from KDE with systemd

    Hello,
Recently, following I switched to a pure systemd setup.  The process was simple and most things worked "right out of the bpx".  However, I can not shutdown or restart from KDE!
Let's say that I do the 3 finger salute (ALT-CTRL-DEL) and select "Turn off computer" what I get is KDE shutting down, but then I will only get a console (TTY) login prompt.  Pressing ALT-CTRL-DEL then will trigger a reboot.  I can also login and use "systemctl poweroff".  However, I don't understand why it doesn't work straight from KDE.
Are there some packages I must install?  Are there some systemd services that I must enable?  What other relevant info should I include in this post?

As bgc1954 said, there is also a symlink "/sbin/poweroff". Just edit the file "/usr/share/config/kdm/kdmrc", go to [shutdown] an replace the line "HaltCmd=/sbin/halt" with "HaltCmd=/sbin/poweroff".

There are a lot of posts in the forums today with people having problems with iMessage.   There was also a published outage yesterday, so it's possible there are still some issues that may be impacting you both.
I would just wait it out - I'm sure it will be sorted out soon.

  • Can't run KDE with OpenGL using radeon driver

    Hi,
I'm running KDE on a ThinkPad T400 with an ATI Radeon HD3470 card using the radeon driver. I've got the desktop running with desktop effects using XRender, but when I try switching to OpenGL I get a pop-up saying...
"Failed to activate desktop effects using the given configuration options."
I've tried tweaking the OpenGL options in KDE and various driver options in xorg.conf but it fails every time. glxinfo reports that direct rendering is working and glxgears runs at around 200fps.

The desktop looks great but I'd love to get it working with OpenGL. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Unfortunatelly, this driver doesn't support opengl with your card. Radeonhd driver doesn't support either. You can only use desktop effects with XRender, but not all and some of them might be choppy.
The only solution for you is installing catalyst drivers (not recommended, hanged my system several times per day) or turning off desktop effects (recommended). In 2 months 2.6.30 kernel should be out with extra features and tweaks, allowing to use EXA with radeon drivers, so XRender performance should fly. Unfortunatelly I don't have any information about OpenGL support with open source radeon drivers.
I moved from nvidia to ati, after nvidia's problem with kde performance, but ati is not better.

  • Regarding  to enable transfered option for enhanced field  in BI 7.0

    Hi Experts,
I am working on a requirement for which  i have enhanced fields  at RSA 6  extractor level and then  I removed hide options from those enhanced fields and then I had replicate it at BI system but  then what happen na for those fields that i have enhance  transfered option at DataSource  level in BI side  is not enable.Even at Bi level edit button at DataSource  level is disabled. So I cannot even edit it.Iam using Emulated DataSource ( 3.5 DataSource ) in BI 7.0.The DataSource  is available in activate version. Can any body suggest any thing how to enable transfered option in BI 7.0 when it is disabled.
    Thanks & Regards
    Vinod kumar

    Hi
Check if you have Authorization to Replicate/Change / Active for the DS, BASIS Team can help you with this.
    R/3 side
Recheck for your enhanced / Appended fields at R/3 Side .
Make sure that you have saved/Activated the Code/DS/Structure.
RSA6 -- Check your DS for the enhanced Fields again / Transport the Same again.
    BI Side
RSA13--Source System --Say Replicate DS -- Now see if you can access the enhanced fields here.
As you said you are using emulated DS -- Check if your Transfer/Update Rules are Active for the DS.. Try to activate the same with RS_TRANSTRU_ACTIVATE_ALL / RSDS_DATASOURCE_ACTIVATE_ALL/ RSDS_UPDR_REACTIVATE_ALL...
    Hope it helps and clear

  • Acrobat standard 9.0 error while enabling commets option using Java script object

I'm using the below java script code in my VB 6.0 application for enabling commets options in the PDF file
    Dim oJSO As Object
    Set oJSO = mPDDoc.GetJSObject
    oJSO.Collab.showAnnotToolsWhenNoCollab = True
It is working fine till Acrobat 8.0. Now I'm trying with Acrobat 9.0 standard edition, it is throwing scripting error 'An unhandled Win32 exception occured in Acrobat.exe[308].
Can anyone suggest the way to enable 'comment' options in Acrobat Standard 9.0 using Java Script Object?
    Thanks

I get much the same problem with VB6, Acrobat 9 Pro and WinXP SP3. When I single step the line:
    oJSO.Collab.showAnnotToolsWhenNoCollab = True
in debug I go to the error handler for my Sub. Inspecting the VB Err object has Number = -2147417851 and Description = "Automation error
The server threw an exception." I get a Microsoft crash notice about Acrobat a short while later.
I've experimented with the JavaScript debugger in Acrobat and you can execute Collab.showAnnotToolsWhenNoCollab = True and reference the value of Collab.showAnnotToolsWhenNoCollab in the console. The problem appears only when accessing Acrobat Javascript through the Interapplication Communication API.
If anyone can help it would be appreciated. I tried Adobe's Acrobat support and they were no help at all.

  • Safari 7.0.4. Couldn't find option "Safari opens with:"

I'm using Safari 7.0.4. Couldn't find option "Safari opens with:". I want to enable all my tabs and windows to be restored where I left off when I quit Safari. I can see that option in my iMac which is running at same version level.

It should happen automatically, unless you checked the box marked Close all windows when quitting an application in the General pane of System Preferences.

  • Need to remove the Shutdown option in Windows 8 since WOL behavior has changed

For those you who manage systems in an enterprise, you need to read the following article and test it out yourself before you respond.
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2776718
This subject of removing just the shutdown option has been floating around for many...many years without any solutions but now with Windows 8 and it's new WOL behavior, we may need to find one since it may be impossible for System Administrators who manage
systems in the enterprise with tools like SMS/SCCM, will be unable to wake up the system if the end user shuts it down. There are all kinds of Group Policies, Tweak UI settings and reg hacks that have been discussed over the years but none of them are currently able
to remove just the shutdown option. Interesting enough, you can change the behavior of the power button to put the system to sleep or hibernate but there doesn't seem to be a way to get the same functionality with the Shutdown option
in the OS. Ideally, I am looking for a way to show only the Hibernate, the Restart and the Logoff option. Currently I can configure the system to show those three along with the Shutdown.

I ran into this too, but I found the solution, at least for my pc:
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4d36e972-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}\0000]
    "PnPCapabilities"=dword:00000108
where the '\0000' could be another value, see in regedit.exe.
The reason this works is, in windows 7, the 2 checkmarks in the "Power Management"-tab of the Ethernet-controller's properties ('allow the computer to turn off this device to save power' and 'allow this device to wake the computer') were independent.
In windows 8 those 2 settings are dependent, meaning if you UNcheck 'allow the computer to turn off this device to save power', you can not check 'allow this device to wake the computer'.
The DWORD_value in the registry has the following values:
0x118 = all checkmarks off (yes really)
0x010 = 'allow the computer to turn off this device to save power'
0x000 = 'allow the computer ...' + 'allow this device to wake the computer'
0x100 = all 3 checkmarks, the former 2 and 'Only allow a magic packet to wake this computer'
While I can not find the true logic in these value, value 0x108, has the required effect.
In the GUI, ( the "Power Management"-tab of the Ethernet-controller's properties) it still looks as if 'allow the computer...' is on, so do not change anything there.
    Good luck!

How to enable private mode from commandline, with an URL.
I am a software dev and I wish to have my application open links in Firefox.
Using ShellExecute(), i can do with with commandlines like:
    firefox.exe http://support.mozilla.org
But I also want the option to open the link in private mode.
I am able to start firefox in private mode by doing this:
    firefox.exe -private
However, if I add a link to the command line
    firefox.exe -private http://support.mozilla.org
    I get strange results.
If firefox is not running, it launches 2 copies of the application.
One that opens in private mode and the other opens in normal mode and goes to the URL specified.
If firefox is already running, it just opens the URL in a new tab.
No private mode instance is launched.
Am I using the command-line syntax incorrectly?

It will never work if Firefox is already running as Firefox will use the already opened Firefox instance.<br />
In that case only using a separate profile will work.
You can try to specify the -url switch as well.
    *firefox.exe -private -url http://support.mozilla<i></i>.org
You can also look at the -new-tab switch.
    *firefox.exe -private -new-tab http://support.mozilla<i></i>.org

  • Enable 3G option is missing in iOS 8

    Hope Apple will help !!
I'm an i phone 5S user, recently I've updated to iOS8 and after that I lost the Enable 3G option in my Network Setting instead Enable LTE took it's place.. My network provider wont support LTE and now my iphone is always running in 3G mode and it's draining my battery more faster.. please fix this bug asap as many people in my country (India) is facing this issue
There must be 3 options like this:
    1. Cellular data
    2. Enable 3G
    3. Enable LTE.

Adobe Reader Touch for Windows 8 does not support printing yet.  So I am not sure what you are actually using to print a PDF document.  (You may be using Microsoft's Windows Reader that is pre-installed in Windows 8.)  I'd recommend using Adobe Reader XI (desktop app with classic UI) instead.
Go to the Windows 8 desktop.
Download Adobe Reader XI from http://get.adobe.com/reader/.
Install and launch Adobe Reader XI in the desktop environment.
Select File > Print to bring up the Print dialog.
You can specify various Print settings in the dialog.
If you have any questions about Adobe Reader XI, please visit the Adobe Reader forum for the traditional desktop version of Reader.

  • How to disable SSLv3 on SSL enabled NodeManager (wls12.1.1 with jRockit)

how to disable SSLv3 on SSL enabled NodeManager (wls12.1.1 with jRockit)

    Hi,
Add the following Java option in the StartNodemanger.sh file
Steps to disable SSLv3 protocol on Weblogic:
    1.  The weblogic.security.SSL.protocolVersion command-line argument lets you specify which protocol is used for SSL connections.
    2.  After enabling/configuring the SSL for weblogic server, append the following option to the JAVA_OPTIONS variable
            -Dweblogic.security.SSL.protocolVersion=TLS1
NOTE: If you don’t specify the above property, by default it takes SSLv3.
