Enabling Spaces

I wanted to set up Spaces because I have too much stuff on my desktop, but I think I may not understand the Spaces concept, as I can't add anything to the Spaces from my desktop. I enabled Spaces, set up the columns and rows, then press the add button, then browse to the folder that I want. However, the "add" feature in the dialogue box is disabled, as are the dozen or so Word files in it. I also can't add my Translation folder and application to a Space.
Is it possible to add folders containing Word Documents to Spaces?
If so, is there a step I'm missing between the + button and browsing that's not enabling the folders and/or files to be added?
Is there a trick not disclosed in the instructions (I have read the information under "Help") to adding applications?
Basically, I have been trying to add the way one adds a printer or user-- pressing the add button then highlighting or selecting the object I want to add. Thanks in advance for any help.

hi reallilybart,
spaces lets you add applications to a chosen space. Like you could have word in space 1, safari in space 2 etc, finder in space 3 etc.
As far as I'm aware it's not possible to link specific documents to particular spaces. You can however distribute them manually: either 1) activate spaces (fn+f8) and then pick up the (now shrunk) document by it's tool bar and drag it into another space or 2) just grab one documents tool bar and hold at the far edge of the screen- the document will then shift to the adjacent space.
I hope this is of some use.

  • Enabling Space bar/back space key on keyboard

    Hi all,
In the computer which I am using, I need to type every time the values in any SAP field to be used, for example the Sales order number field. In other computers I used to press the Spacebar or Backspace key on the keyboard to get the latest entry in those fields. This results in wastage of time when we are using the same entries more frequently and have to note these numbers anywhere.
Can anyone help me to enable this option of Spacebar or Backspace?
Is this an SAP setting or Operating System setting?
I am using Windows XP in my computer. And SAP 4.7 version
    Thank in advance.
    Regards,
    Ragesh

    Hi all,
I got the answer for my issue.
In the properties of the particular system logon, for example in properties of Development system logon>Advanced->Uncheck Low-Speed connection under the Connection Speed tab.
Now you could get the trace of values previously entered for this logon on development system.
To have this functionality in other logon systems like test or Production, follow the same procedure.
Thanks everyone who has tried to help out here.

  • Spaces can't be un-enabled

I had enabled spaces, but found a number of programs (mail, for instance) sometimes refuses to show up in a window when it's opened. You have to CTRL arrow through a cycle to make it appear.
So I un-enabled spaces. But spaces didn't go away. CTRL arrow still goes through the four, spaces windows, though it is definitely NOT

(Sorry hit wrong key) this continues previous post)
    ...it is definitely NOT enabled.
I have restarted the machine, but it still doesn't go away.
Is there some folder in the library I can delete to get rid of spaces?

  • Spaces not working, please help!

I used to use spaces on my old Mac Pro. Now I have a new one and Spaces isn't working properly.
Very simply I assign Finder to space 1. Then assign InDesign to space 2.
How it used to work is I navigate to a file in Finder in space 1, double click it and it would move over to space 2 and open the file in InDesign.
But now, although InDesign is set to space 2 it opens in space 1.
The only way I can fix it is to open a file within InDesign (file>open rather than using Finder) then when I open another one in Finder it moves over to space 2, but this is far from ideal and not useable to do this with all programmes.
Hope that makes some sense. I love spaces and it really speeds things up at busy times!
    Thanks,
    James.

Open system Prefs, and turn Spaces off. Re-boot your computer and re-enable Spaces. Check to make sure that from the drop down menu, that F8 is selected as the key of choice for enabling what I call the over-view mode. If this doesn't work, then I have no explanation for you. Perhaps you should try re-installing the Spaces application that comes with your copy of Leopard. Also, if the F8 key won't bring up the over-all view, try assigning another key to that function. Perhaps it's the key itself that won't work.
    Good luck

  • After changing spaces, most keys stop registering

I have a 5 year old Mac Pro running OS 10.6.8. I have spaces configured with four spaces, and the keyboard command to switch between spaces set as Ctrl-arrow. Most of the time this works as expected. However I've been having a periodic issue where, about once a week or so, I'll change spaces (Ctrl-arrow) and after it switches the new space, the four-panel HUD window that shows what space I'm on won't go away. Moreover, most characters I type on the keyboard will no longer register with the OS. Specifically, I if I type any letter, numbers, or other character, it won't register with any applications. I can however still type the keys Ctrl, Opt, Cmd, and the arrow keys. For example, when my computer is in this state, I can still type Ctrl-arrow and move to different spaces (with the HUD window staying up the entire time). But if I type any other keys, they never register. I.e. typing letters won't show up in a word document, typing Cmd-A (or anything else) won't do anything, etc. Even stranger, I can open up the Keyboard Viewer and see that all the keys that I'm typing (letters, numbers, etc.) are actually being displayed in the Keyboard Viewer correctly. So the key press is registering with the Keyboard Viewer, but isn't making it to the actual OS. I can even use my mouse to click individual keys in the Keyboard Viewer and, although the keys highlight in the Keyboard Viewer as expected, nothing is registered by the OS (the letters never get registered by any applications).
Once my computer is in this state, my only option is to quit the Dock (using Activity Monitor), which restores my full functionality. (Note I discovered this "fix" by trial and error- I was restarting various parts of my system and noticed that this restored my functionality.) I can then work as normal in that space, Also, I can change spaces by selecting a different space using the icon in the menu bar, or by dragging a window to the edge of the screen. All of these actions will change the space without breaking anything. However as soon as I Ctrl-arrow to another space, it immediately breaks my ability to type. Quitting the Dock will again restore things. My Mac will stay in this state (where I can't use Ctrl-arrow to change spaces with breaking things ) until I reboot. After a reboot everything goes back to normal. Things will then be fine for a week or so (during that time I can Ctrl-arrow just fine), and then one day I'll be changing spaces using Ctrl-arrorw and the HUD will stay up and I'll be stuck again.
When the actual breaking occurs (i.e. when I issue the Ctrl-arrow that breaks the functionality), nothing is being written to the Console. However when I quit the Dock, I see these lines, which may be related:
    11/3/11 4:43:09 PM          com.apple.launchd.peruser.501[223]          (com.apple.Dock.agent[58885]) Exited with exit code: 1
    11/3/11 4:43:09 PM          com.apple.Dock.agent[59232]          Error registering cmd-tab key, 1011
    11/3/11 4:43:09 PM          com.apple.Dock.agent[59232]          Error registering cmd-shift-tab key, 1011
I've ben having this problem off and on for many months, through a few OS updates. I'm completely stumped what might be causing this. I've tried unplugging and replugging my keyboard to no avail. However I'm thinking it must be pretty low-level, since when it's in this state even directly clicking on the Keyboard Viewer keys doesn't get registered by the OS. Other than this problem, the Mac is completely trouble-free, so I don't think there's anything wrong with the hardware. I've tried to think if this problem is related to anything else that I'm doing on the system that might be triggering it, but I don't think there's anything unusual that I'm doing. When it's in this state I can quit every application and disable and re-enable spaces and it doesn't get me out of it- I need to quit the Dock and eventually reboot. Anyone have any ideas where to look for a solution?

So I never figured out what causes this, although the frequency has dropped to about once a month. Note I'm still on 10.6.8. However I did figure out a bettery way to get back control of the keyboard. If I sleep the displays (Ctrl-Shift-Eject) and then wake the displays back up, the keyboard goes back to working fine. Evern better, changing spaces doesn't reignight the problem. So I'm good until it randomly occurrs again.
Hope this helps someone else out there.

  • F8 not working to bring up Spaces - Please Help

    Hi,
I recently noticed that I can swap between spaces using the Shift Right Arrow or Left Arrow, however my F8, F7 or F6 do not do anything. I remember at one time they used to divide the screen into 4 spaces and I could see all at the same time.
Any suggestions and Yes Spaces is enabled and from what I can tell the F8 key is enabled as well!
    Thx

  • Spaces Keyboard Shortcut

    Hi all,
This past week I upgraded to 10.5.2 and started playing with Spaces. I set up the Command+Arrows to switch between the different Spaces I created, but then I realized that this was also the keyboard shortcut to move the cursor to the end of a line of text in a word processor or Mail or whatever.
I got back into the preferences and changed the keyboard back to Control + Arrow to switch between Spaces, thinking that I'd get my keyboard "go to the end of the line" shortcut back, but that didn't happen. So now I have no keyboard shortcut to quickly navigate to the end of a line of text.
Is there anyone out there that knows how to get me back to square-one on this?
    Thanks in advance,
    Scott

I tried replicating what you did, changing the Spaces to Command+Arrow, moving around Spaces a few times using the new key combination, and then changing back to Control+Arrow. But I couldn’t replicate what is happening to you - my Command+Arrow went back to moving me to the end of the line or beginning of the line in MS Word and Mail.
A couple of things you might try. Go into Spaces and uncheck Enable Spaces. See if your Command+Arrow works properly. If not, try going back into Spaces, re-enable Spaces and remove all your applications from their Spaces and again disabling Spaces. Then see if your Command+Arrow to move to the end returns.

  • Possible Simultaneous Corruption in Dock, Exposé and Spaces?

I upgraded to 10.5 a couple of weeks ago, and it was running smoothly, save for some Time Machine issues, until yesterday morning. I woke my computer up and exposé would no longer work--none of my F quick keys were functional, I couldn't Tab+~ to cycle through applications, nothing. Spaces also shut down (or more correctly, the menu bar icon said that I had not yet enabled Spaces even though I had been using it the entire time I've had Leopard), but the Dock was acting even stranger.
I normally keep my Dock at the bottom of the screen and hidden, but since yesterday I can neither hide nor show it at will. I can't change the side it's on, and now it randomly shows itself (it's come up at least 3 times since I've been writing this), but either disappears when I try to click on it, or seems frozen for a second and then vanishes. I've been able to launch one application--Safari--one time from the Dock in two days. I can't make changes to the Dock, or Spaces or Exposé, for that matter, through System Preferences.
I've deleted the Dock preferences several times, run disk utilities several times, started in Safe mode, turned off all my peripherals, reinstalled my Waccom driver (out of pure desperation) and done a clean reinstall of Leopard, but so far nothing has worked. Disk utilities says everything is fine, and though I've run into the same problems repairing my permissions that others here have found--the LONG run time, the barber pole without progress, the weird messages--it seemed to have worked okay.
I can manually launch programs from the Applications folder, and they seem to be working pretty well when they are launched. The only thing that I've noticed that could be out of the ordinary, though I don't know, is that when I delete the Dock preferences--both com.apple.dock.db, and com.apple.dock.plist--another file, com.apple.dock.db-journal, will flash every so often, though not necessarily when the dock reappears.
(right this second half the dock peeked up, disappeared and then after a beat, appeared fully and disappeared again--in roughly the same amount of time it took me to write this sentence).
As you can probably guess, by now I'm desperate and completely out of ideas. Does anyone have any insight?
    Thanks.

Can't find the edit button, so I'll add two things onto the list:
    7. Terminal - sudo periodic daily weekly monthly
    8. Reinstalling OS X
    ...and nothing has worked.
And for some reason, there is some screen tearing while scrolling... could this be a problem with core video/animation?

  • Workflow scanning - Use space in file name

I configured two Xerox printers (WC 5875 and W 7835), with latest fimware installed, to scan on a windows shared folder using SMB protocol. The scan is working normally. But users experience this "interface" issue: is not possible to use SPACE character on the file name. The space bar is disabled on the printer screen when users try to modify the standard file name. Is it a software limitation? Is it related with SMB protocol? Is it possible to enable space in file name? Thanks in advance for assistance. CLAUDIO

If the current firmware begins with 072, upgrade to this one here and the option will be enabled for the space bar. 58xx devices 7830 and 7835 If the current software/Firmware begins with 071, I highly suggest a tech call be placed to have an Altboot no data backup no clone to those levels, the increment that changes from 071-072 is major, it is the change from Connectkey 1.0 to 1.5, and when done, due to extensive changes, does not at all play well with updates or clone files.

  • What are the default settings for spaces

What are the system's default settings for SPACES preferences?

Below is a pict with Enable spaces checked so you can see the default popup menus.

  • Spaces 13-16 keyboard shortcut

I moved from 12 to 16 Spaces, and for spaces 11-12 the control-option-1 and 2 work to jump to spaces 11 and 12, but when I try to go to spaces 13-16 (control-option-3, etc.) nothing happens. I tried rebooting but that didn't fix it. Does anyone know if I might have a setting wrong in the system preference for Spaces, or if there is a different keyboard sequence, or a conflict with something else such that I can get to the top 4 spaces (13-16) using a keyboard sequence. I can use the control+arrow keys to jump up from space 12, or use the overview function key to see the grid and click or use the pull down menu, and they work, I've just gotten faster at jumping using the keyboard numbers, and would like to get to spaces 13-16 that way as well.

I tried replicating what you did, changing the Spaces to Command+Arrow, moving around Spaces a few times using the new key combination, and then changing back to Control+Arrow. • HT1624 what if I don't have the view option in the System preferences, how do I activate Spaces?

    ...

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
When you open , System Preferences, Personal, is there an Exposé & Spaces listed?
If so, you need to click the blue Spaces button near the top to set preferences, including enabling Spaces and, showing it in the top menu bar if desired. Once enabled, F8 is the default key to enable Spaces, as shown below.

  • [Spaces] sticky app after space switching

A couple days after a clean 10.5 install (with software updates to 10.5.5) Spaces unexpected started keeping the current application active when switching directly to an empty space (e.g. using arrow key shortcuts) instead of making Finder active as it originally did. This now makes it necessary to explicitly select Finder (e.g. by clicking the desktop) instead of its previously more convenient implicitly selection.
Space switching behaves the original way when tested under the Guest account on this system, and also under my account on another similarly configured 10.5.5 system. That isolates the change specifically to my iMac account. One difference I thought of that might have triggered the change is moving Dock from the bottom to left side of the screen, but returning it to the bottom had no effect on Spaces. It doesn't matter whether the "When switching to an application, switch to a space with open windows for the application" Spaces preferences is enabled or disabled (I prefer the latter and it's disabled on the other system). I also added a few space-specific Application Assignments but that seems irrelevant. Disabling/re-enabling Spaces didn't matter, except for requiring adjusting Spaces-related keyboard and Exposé shortcuts again (which sometimes get confused for no apparent reason anyway).
During Spaces testing under the Guest account I watched for changes to preferences files hoping to isolate which one(s) might contain whatever's responsible for the misbehavior under my account -- obvious there. Btw, Leopard's Property List Editor is awful, Maybe there's something cached under my account that could be removed to reset Spaces but I couldn't figure out where if that's somewhere in ~/Library/Caches or /var/folders.
I've restarted the system several times since this change started. I don't want to randomly delete preferences and other files that would undo configuration changes without having any effect on Spaces. Other suggestions for how to specifically fix/reset Spaces would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I've isolated this problem to a conflict with PTHVolume and notified its developer.

  • Anyone using Spaces with MainStage

I've never enabled Spaces. However, to get some needed functionality to address missing features in MainStage (like no Sysex message sending), I'm thinking of running Bidule or Max while running MainStage. It would probably make sense to have them be in different virtual windows (which is my understand of what Spaces does) so wondering how well that works before I go to the trouble.

Just tried Spaces briefly. I discovered that if I put MainStage into fullscreen mode then I'm not able to switch to another space at all.
    Bummer
