  • Encapsulation dot1q is not working?, 2600 Cisco router

I am trying to config a 2620 Cisco router to perform subintreface (F0/0.1) for Vlan Trunk Protocol, however when I try to configure the encapsulation dot1q, I continue to receive error massage with ^ symbol below the 'c' See below, the platform version is a 12.3(26) which should be acceptable to perform an (encapsulation dot1q). The Ethernet is a fast-Ethernet 10/100 port. I also try the ISL, I receive the same massage.
Can anyone suggest what could be the problem!!

It's possible your feature set it not good enough to run trunking.
Trunking apparently requires a minimum of the IP PLUS feature set according to this document
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/tech/tk389/tk815/technologies_configuration_example09186a00800949fd.shtml
table 2 shows a minimum IOS of 12.0(1)T and IPPLUS/IPPLUS on the 2620 - so your IOS revision is OK, but maybe your feature set is not.
You can figure which feature set you have by going here
    http://tools.cisco.com/ITDIT/CFN/Dispatch?act=rlsSelect&task=search&searchby=image
and entering your image name (assuming it's not been stuffed with) which you can find by doing "show flash" or "dir"
If you don;t have the right feature set, then you're out of luck unless you can upgrade/change the IOS image the router is booting with.
    Cheers.

  • Encapsulation dot1q any second any on me3600x

    Hi,
we recieve a number of downstream hand-offs that are delivered as SVID/CVID ccts.  There are mixture of data, and VOIP subscribers, the only way to tell the different type of subscribers is that the all voip services are marked as cos 4.  All data subscribers are marked cos 0.  I have no control over the SVID/CVID mix, and there is no "pattern" so I cannot enter ranges.
I am wanting to deliver each subscriber type to a different bridge-domain then use xconnect to forward these so ultimately i have one bridge-domain with VOIP services, and one with data services.
on the me3600x I tried the following:
    interface GigabitEthernet0/4
    switchport trunk allowed vlan none
    switchport mode trunk
    service instance 950 ethernet
      encapsulation dot1q 1-4096 secondary 1-4096
      bridge-domain 950
    service instance 951 ethernet
      encapsulation dot1q 1-4096 secondary 1-4096 cos 4
      bridge-domain 951
This seemed to work with cos 4 traffic being sent to a differnet bridge-domain than other traffic, however when i try to apply this config to more than 4 interfaces (8 bridge-domain members) i get a "command rejected" error when i enter the "encapsulation dot1q" command.  "Encapsulation deafult" is still accepted though.
can any one explain to me why there is this limitation, or if there is any way around it, or any other way to do what i am trying to do?
    ta.

    Hi Mike,
I replicated your setup in the lab and it appears the problematic line causing this interesting limitation is the “encapsulation dot1q any second-dot1q any” under the “service instance 950”
Since you are not really interested in the second tag value you can leave it out of the equation using just “encapsulation dot1q any” –to match any frame (not matching any more specific service instance rules) with at least one 802.1q tag or you can use “encapsulation default” –to match any frame (not matching any more specific service instance rules)
    interface GigabitEthernet0/1
    switchport trunk allowed vlan none
    switchport mode trunk
    service instance 950 ethernet
    encapsulation dot1q any
    bridge-domain 950
    service instance 951 ethernet
    encapsulation dot1q any second-dot1q any cos 4
    bridge-domain 951
    c36cx#sh bridge-domain 951
    Bridge-domain 951 (6 ports in all)
    State: UP                   Mac learning: Enabled
    Maximum address limit: 10000
       GigabitEthernet0/1 service instance 951
       GigabitEthernet0/2 service instance 951
       GigabitEthernet0/3 service instance 951
       GigabitEthernet0/4 service instance 951
       GigabitEthernet0/5 service instance 951

Newer devices don't support ISL so you can only run 802.1Q. That means that there is no need for an encapsulation command because only one encapsulation is supported. If the device had support for ISL then you would also have that command.

  • Switchport access vlan Vs encapsulation dot1Q ?

    Hi All,
Could some one explain the difference between encapsulation dot1Q & the switchport access vlan ???

The command "switchport access VLAN" is a command to specify the one-and-only-one VLAN you want the switch port to carry.  By default, an access port will always carry VLAN 1.  This is the reason why you will never see the command "switchport access vlan 1".  You cannot have an access port carry more than one VLAN (except when you allow voice VLAN).
If you want to have two or more VLANs per a single switchport, then you need to enable Trunking.  Therefore the command "encapsulation dot1q" is one of the command to enable Trunking.  This command specifies which of the two Trunking protocols to use:  IEEE's 802.1q or Cisco's ISL.
Take note that without the command "switchport mode trunk" the interface is still an access port.   Not all Catalyst switch will accept the command "switchport encapsulation dot1q".  This is because the switch will ONLY accept 802.1q encapsulation so there's no need for this command.  All Catalyst 2K (except 2924XL) and some legacy 4000/4500 line cards support only 802.1q encapsulation.  All others will support either 802.1q or ISL.  You will never find a Catalyst switch that can support BOTH 802.1q and ISL.

  • Encapsulation dot1q on WS-4418-GB

    Hi all,
I have a 4006 (sup3) and a 4506 (Sup4) have WS-4118-GB with Gbics in each in slot6. They are are uplinked to another couple of switches by port 6/1,6/2 (portchannel ) encap dot1q and work fine.
But i cannot uplink ports 6/3,6/4 as the switchport port Trunk encapsulation dot1q command does not work ...
Port capabilities displays 802.1q is possible . Please help .
I am running IOS cat4000-i5s-mz.122-25.EW.bin on each swith.

Yes dot1q is supported on all 18 ports. ISL is supported on ports 1 and 2. You do not see "switchport port Trunk encapsulation dot1q" because ports 3-18 support only dot1q and there is no need to specify encapsulation.

  • Encapsulation dot1q on a 2500

I have a 2503 and have went through four different versions of IOS (currently on 12.2(32)) trying to find one that would allow me to do encapsulation dot1q on a sub-interface. Is this possible on a 2500?

    Jesse,
Cisco Feature Navigator doesn't show 802.1q as being supported on 2500 series routers. Use this tool for software research and selection. Here's the link for it.

  • Applying "route-map" in interfaces with encapsulation dot1q

    Hello,
I would like to ask you if there were some trouble  in applying route-maps in a interface and its subinterfaces, as it is shown:
    interface GigabitEthernet0/2

I am not sure if it is correct totally. Besides I get this informacion doing "show ip  policy" and it seems to be right.

We do not have much to work with in your post so giving you really good answers is difficult. You do not tell us what type of device this is (I assume probably a router, but perhaps it is a layer 3 switch?) or what version of code it is running. These things make a difference sometimes in what is supported or is not supported. But since you get output in show ip policy then I assume that the device does support configuration of this feature.
You show us the configuration of the interfaces but not the configuration of the route maps or the access lists which the route maps probably use. So we can not form an opinion of the validity of the route maps or the access lists.
And you do not tell us whether the Policy Based Routing is working or not (and in fact you do not tell us for sure that you are doing PBR - though that is generally what route maps on the interfaces are doing) so we are not clear whether there is a problem here or not.
But based on what you show us in this post I do not see any particular problems with the route maps and the way that you have applied them to interfaces (assuming that your goal is really to do PBR).

  • Dot1q-tunneling and native frames ( untagged )

hi all I have the following setup:
    tunnel Port:
    interface GigabitEthernet1/0/2
    switchport access vlan 784
    switchport mode dot1q-tunnel
    switchport nonegotiate
    l2protocol-tunnel cdp
    l2protocol-tunnel stp
    l2protocol-tunnel vtp
    no cdp enable
    spanning-tree portfast
Trunk Port - Into Carrier Network
    interface GigabitEthernet1/0/25
    switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q
    switchport trunk native vlan 4094
    switchport mode trunk
    switchport nonegotiate
    load-interval 30
    speed nonegotiate
    spanning-tree bpdufilter enable
the Native Port on the tunnel interface = 1 and native vlan tagging is enabled on the switch.
what happens to untagged frames that hit the tunnel port from the customer? Imagine that they dont have their port as a trunk and are instead emitting untagged frames?
are these dropped or simply have a single Q-tag pushed and are then tunnelled through the carrier network?
I have followed the recommendation of making the trunk port have a native vlan that is not the native vlan of any of the tunnel ports.
    thanks

Normally double-tag traffic is seen as NON-IP traffic by metro devices, since they cannot see beyond first tag.
Untagged customer traffic will behave like IP traffic in metro network, since it will have only one tag.
You can use a trick - create an IP access list on trunk port with "deny ip any any" - basically denying all IP traffic. That should stop all traffic that was not tagged by the customer. Ofcourse that will disable your management - so you need to plan this.
If more than one customer is using same S-VLAN, and one customer has e.g. VLAN 3 untagged, and other one has VLAN 5 untagged, their VLANs will be interconnected.

  • EVC and second-dot1q problem.

    Hi all,
I'm trying to configure a interface with two dot1q tags but I can't do it.
I think thats is because my line card doesn't support it but I can't find any doc to confirm it.
    I have a 7606-S chassis with two WS-SUP32-GE-3B, one WS-X6548-RJ-45 and one WS-X6516A-GBIC.
When I try to configure a subinterface in any line module with the command "encapsulation dot1Q X second-dot1q Y" the router doesn't accept second-dot1q part of the command,
    Router(config-subif)#do sh run interface GigabitEthernet2/1.2
    Building configuration...
    Current configuration : 38 bytes
    interface GigabitEthernet2/1.2
    end
    Router(config-subif)#interface GigabitEthernet2/1.2
    Router(config-subif)#encapsulation dot1Q 3 ?
native  Make this as native vlan
      <cr>
I tried it in a interface of each module and always is the same output.
After, I have tried to use service instance but I can't set encasulation under service instance configuration part,
    Router(config)#interface GigabitEthernet6/5
    Router(config-if)#service instance 1 ethernet
    Router(config-if-srv)#?

The easy way is upgrade hardware but is not a choice now...
Anybody know if it's possible do it with my hardware config?
    Thanks in advance.
    David.

    Hello.
Yes, this kind of MPLS configuration is supported on SIP400, ES20/ES40 LC, but ES20/40 requires SUP720, so SIP400 is your only chose.
If you configure xconnect under service instance, you need SIP400 V2 SPA; if you configure under sub-interface -> just SIP400. In this case SIP400 is customer-facing LC.
Also you have an option to configure xconnect under interface VLAN -> SIP400 should be CORE-facing LC.

    2950:
    interface FastEthernet0/22
    switchport mode trunk
    no ip address
    duplex full
    speed 100
    interface FastEthernet0/24
    switchport mode trunk
    no ip address
    duplex full
    speed 100
But I cannot ping between the two routers?

7200-A has dot1q ints for servers connected to the 2950 (Access Ports)....these are all currently successfully trunked down FE24
I want to connect 7200-B to 7200-A, and have dot1q Ints on both routers(As /30's) that can communicate (They will be used on 7200-B as Internet gateways for VRF's (With IP Nat enabled)....I was hoping that by having 7200-B connected to 2950 FE22, and configuring that port as a trunk also, that the dot1q ints on both routers could talk.
vlan 23 does exist on 2950, and is being trunked on both FE 22 + FE 24
I dont have any spare FE ports on 7200-A, hence the reason for me connecting 7200-B to the 2950.

  • 7600 second-dot1q & vlan tag manipulation

    Hi,
Does anyone know what the hardware requirements are for using config such as "sencapsulation dot1Q 660 second-dot1q 1" or any of the "service instance" commands such as below to manipulate dot1q tags?
Im running 7600 with SIP-400, IOS 12.2(33)SRD and there are no such commands available at the cli. Suspect ES-20 is needed as a minimum but can't see this mentioned in any docs.
    interface FastEthernet1/0.660
    encapsulation dot1Q 660 second-dot1q 1
    OR
    interface GigabitEthernet3/0/0
    description Sample Configs
    service instance 1 ethernet
    encapsulation untagged
rewrite ingress tag push dot1q 3 symmetric
    xconnect 10.30.30.173 2 encapsulation mpls
    service instance 10 ethernet
    encapsulation dot1q 10
rewrite ingress tag pop 1 symmetric
    bridge-domain 500 split-horizon
    service instance 20 ethernet
    encapsulation dot1q 20 second-dot1q 200
rewrite ingress tag pop 1 symmetric
    bridge-domain 500 split-horizon
    service instance 30 ethernet
    encapsulation dot1q 20 second-dot1q any
rewrite ingress tag pop 1 symmetric
    bridge-domain 500 split-horizon
I just need to pop the service vlan tag. At the moment I'm using a port per service to peel off the outer tag and this approach isn't going to scale.
    Appreciate any advice on this.
    Cheers
    Kent.

    Hi Jerry,
I believe - about to test it - that this only works with SPA-v2 interfaces. I was testing with a SPA-v1 interface previously. Is this your understanding? Docs are pretty light on with hardware requirements.
