"Enclosing folder could not be modified" error

I work at a school and we've had an XServe for a while but only just got round to getting it set up (we were waiting for a new building to be built that went months behind schedule) and we can't get anything to stream. We're not sure why - and we get the same error message each time.
The error is "The file could not be created, because the enclosing folder could not be modified."
I've checked the folder permissions and yet everything seems like it should work, but as I'm new to XServe, I can't be sure.
Does anyone else have any ideas?
We're trying to make it so that staff and students within the school can access any of the videos on our XServe and stream them over the network. We've followed the instruction manual on how to create a hinted video and add them to the server but every time we try to apply the settings it throws up the error "The file could not be created, because the enclosing folder could not be modified."
This is why I thought it could be the permissions on the folders, but I've checked them and they seem to be okay - but there's obviously something simple that I'm blatantly missing?

Unfortunately not - yours is the first response I've had so far so we're still having the same problems. I just can't seem to figure it out at all.

  • Folder Could Not Be Found Error - Please Help, Don't Want To Re-Edit EVERYTHING!

So I just edited a huge set of photos.  I put them into a collection, then undid the collection.  But now when I go back to the edited photos in their original location & click develop there is an error saying ""this folder could not be found".  I can see all the pictures & the edits I made in the Library though, so I'm thinking they're still there somewhere.
When I click on Library, it says they are located in G:\Lily\2010  (but I can't locate this folder G: on my hard drive)
When I right click & do show in explorer it says there is no file located in this specific path
I tried re-uploading the unedited pics from my camera into a new folder on C: & then right clicking on the G:\lily\2010 & selecting "find missing folders" & then selecting the newly uploaded unedited pics & that didn't work either.
Is there something I'm missing here?  How can fix this so I don't have to re-edit all of these photos again?  PLEASE PLEASE HELP!!!  Thanks in advance

There is no update folder location when I right click....  I'm using LR 3 beta if that matters.  There an update folder location on the far left scrolling menu, which I've tried to do a couple of different ways & it hasn't worked.
Does anyone know how I can find the G: folder on my computer????  I would try to paste the photos back in that folder if I could find it.

  • "The folder could not be found" error message

I recently had Windows XP problems sever enough to cause me to reformat my hard drive and reinstall XP and all my programs. This resulted in drive letter assignments different from what I had before. I saved copies of my LR catalog in multiple locations to be safe. When I open Lightroom and point to the Catalog I get the error above when in the Develop Module and a "offline or missing" error code when in the Library Module. Obviously LR is looking for the files where they were before. I had been working with image files stored on K:\ but now those files are on H:\. I see three solutions: 1) do a reassignment of drive letters in Windows; 2) move the files from drive H:\ to drive K:\; 3) edit the target drive spec within the LR catalog (is this doable?). Does anyone have any comments on the merits of these solutions and any caveats to observe along the way? TIA, njb

Right click on the top level missing folder, then choose Find MIssing Folder from context menu. This will open a dialog from which you can navigate your way to the new location. Once selected Lr should relink to the missing files

  • "The home folder could not be created because the network name cannot be found" error in AD users and computers

Our home folders are stored on a non-windows NAS device and with Windows XP and 2003 we've always got the above error when creating or modifying users home folders, even when the shares were al ready created and being used.
However this was never really a big issue as the error that popped up was really for information and finshed with a "we've modified the user properties anyway, please create the share manually" type message.
Unfortunately now we are moving to windows 7 and 2008R2, this last part of the the message is missing and it won't accept the correct value.
This issue may be in the way that the NAS device shares the folder, as only the username that matches the folder name can access the share.  This behaviour can't be modified.
Is there a way to get Windows 7/2008R2 AD users and computers to behave the same way that Windows XP/2003 does , i.e. don't try and create the share just set the value in the user properties  ?
The AD is still at 2003 level and we can still use Windows XP/2003 clients to make the changes but this is a bit of a limitation.

The KB article is almost what we have apart from theitalic underlined
    part
    Consider the following scenario:
You use a domain administrator account to log on to a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2.
You use the Active Directory Users and Computers Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in to connect to a domain controller.
You open the Properties dialog box of a user account.
The user account has sole access to a shared folder path that cannot be accessed by the administrator account.
You set the Remote Desktop Services Home Folderattribute to the shared folder path.
NoteThis attribute is located on the
    Remote Desktop Services Profiletab.
    You click Apply or OK.
In this scenario, you receive the following error message:
The home folder could not be created because: The network name cannot be found.
Note If you click Apply or OK again, no error message is returned. However, the setting is not saved.
I think the important bit is
The user account has sole access to a shared folder path that cannot be accessed by the administrator account.
We manually create the shares on our NAS and then just want to enter the path in the profile tab, I suppose the question is how to we stop it trying to create the shares ?

    1. You need to type or paste in ~/Library/Keychains/ and not -/Library/Keychains/.

  • Sparsebundle could not be created (error 45)

I just bought my first ever Mac a little over 30 days ago and also purchased a 1TB Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Home network storage system. I immediately installed the GoFlex software that included a full integration into Time Machine. This worked perfectly until about 4 days ago when all of a sudden it stopped backing up. I'm getting an error that reads: Time Machine could not complete the backup "...sparsebundle could not be created (error 45)".
I can still access the drive outside of the TM program (although not the ATM folder), so the drive itself perfectly installed and connected. I tried rebooting computer and hard drive; that didn't work. I tried re-selecting the drive from within TM; that didn't work either. I'm not really sure what to do...and am pretty pi$$ed at all those "I'm a Mac vs. I'm a PC" commercials right now because this is the same kinda stuff that got me to leave the Windows based systems in the first place. UGH...so WHY is my $4,000 Mac supposed to be any better that an equivelent $2,500 PC?????? Any suggestions on a fix would be greatly appreciated.

+I'm running 10.6.7, last I checked that was later then 10.5.6.+
Try reading a little more carefully. The server has to be a Time Capsule or a Mac running 10.5.6 or later, not the client. Your NAS is neither, so your configuration is unsupported, and predictably, it doesn't work.
+Mac lends their name and brand to the Seagate product, so I must therefore assume your comments are are ill-informed.+
Apple has nothing to do with the Seagate product. Seagate, not Apple, claims that it's compatible with Time Machine, and Seagate, not Apple, is responsible for that claim. If you think the claim is misleading, you have a point, and if you can't get satisfaction from Seagate I suggest you consult a lawyer.
For the benefit of anyone finding this topic, the Seagate NAS is *not safe to use with Time Machine*.

  • Time Machine: sparcebundle could not be accessed (error -1)

    Hello!
I’ve using Time Machine with my Time Capsule for some time and out of nowhere it started giving me the following error: The backup disk image “xxx/xxx/xxx.sparcebundle”could not be accessed (error -1).
I’ve been searching weeks for a fix without success, already tried http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html - #C17 and it didn’t help.
Also tried on my Time Capsule: unplug, reset, factory reset, erase disk, format disk, change password, and on Time Machine preferences tried to remove disk and add again…. no success, error persists.
I discovered the only way for backup to work is to I login as a test user which I created for this purpose (I’m the administrator).

I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, they may not work as described.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then copy it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:
    kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}' | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. If the command produced no output, the window will be empty. Post the contents of the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window), if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. You can then close the TextEdit window. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that. No typing is involved in this step.
    Step 2
    Repeat with this line:
    { sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix\.cron)|org\.(amav|apac|cups|isc|ntp|postf|x)/{print $3}'; echo; sudo defaults read com.apple.loginwindow LoginHook; echo; sudo crontab -l; } 2> /dev/null | open -ef
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which you do have to type. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. Type it carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. Heed that warning, but don't post it. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before taking this step. If that’s not possible, skip to the next step.
    Step 3
    { launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|org\.(x|openbsd)/{print $3}'; echo; crontab -l 2> /dev/null; } | open -ef
    Step 4
    ls -A /e*/{cr,la,mach}* {,/}Lib*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts .la* 2> /dev/null | open -ef
Important: If you formerly synchronized with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, anonymize it before posting.
    Step 5
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of login items' | open -ef
Remember, steps 1-5 are all copy-and-paste — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output.
    You can then quit Terminal.

  • Time Machine couldn't complete the backup to "Time Capsule. The backup disk image /Volumes/Data/MacBook Pro.sparsebundle could not be created (error 60)"

We are Mountain Lion using Time Machine to backup to Time Capsule. When the backup tries to run, an error appears after a couple of minutes saying "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer." Then an error shows up saying "Time Machine couldn't complete the backup to "Time Capsule. The backup disk image /Volumes/Data/MacBook Pro.sparsebundle could not be created (error 60)"
I low level reformatted the Time Capsule and that didn't fix it. I then tried using Time Machine on another computer to back up to that same Time Capsule and it worked- so I'm doubting it's the Time Capsule.
I've noticed that when Time Machine runs, that a  folder called Data  at /Volumes/ appears while Time Machine is trying to back up. I think it's making the sparsebundle to transfer to the Time Capsule.
However, after a couple of minutes- it comes back saying that the disk is unreadable.
I think it's something wrong with either creating the sparsebundle or opening the disk image that seems to be a part of the Time Machine backup process on the local drive.
I am able to create a disk image with Disk Utilitiy without any problem on that system. I've repaired the disk and disk permissions with Disk Utility and replaced the directory with Disk Warrior. I've trashed what preference files I could find and restarted. I've completely removed the backup destination from the computer and added it back again.
    Help!
    Thanks,
    Neil

Yes, exactly.  It makes one sparse bundle per Mac.
It's possible the TC's disk is too full for a new sparse bundle, or there may be some other problem.
Via the Finder, locate the existing sparse bundle (see the pink box in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #17 if you're not sure how to do that).  See how large it is (plus how large anything else that may be there).  If the total is very near the size of the TC, that may be the problem.
If not, a clue may be lurking in your logs.  Use the widget in #A1 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting to display the backup messages from your logs.  Locate the backup in question (probably the first one displayed), then copy and post all the messages here.

Using an external 2 TB disk for Time Machine for iMac and MacBook Pro, both running 10.8.2. One month ago, upgraded MacBook from 10.5 to 10.8. Three weeks later, Macbook backups started failing. Ran TechTool on backup disk, found much corruption, reformatted it. iMac has always backed up to this disk just fine, but MacBook backups keep failing. LONG "Preparing to Backup" time, then suddenly "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer - Initialize, Ignore or  Retry" followed immediately by "The backup disk image "Volumes/Backup2TB-1/MacBookPro.sparsebundle" could not be created (error 60). When I check the TMP file on the backup disk, it's gotten to about 17.9 Mb before quitting.
What could be getting in the way?
