Enclosure for MacBook SATA drive

Do I need a special external drive enclosure for my MacBook drive? When I removed it, I noticed it doesn't have the pins where the drive is connected to the computer, but rather two thin, extended pieces that slide into the computer. My Macally enclosures were used with my older MacBook HD which had the pins (that were easily bent). I don't think my current enclosure will allow this drive to be used?
What enclosure would support this drive? It's a Hitachi drive that came with my MacBook (intel).

Any enclosure made for 2.5" SATA drives.

i got a 320 gig WD Scorpio drive and noticed it didn't look like it'd fit w/ my StarTech InfoSafe enclosure, which made we worry that my Macbook's drive wouldn't fit either b/c i read the WD drive made a good swap w/ the Macbook drive, then i noticed i got a IDE type 2.5 enclosure and i think i need a SATA type... which is what i thought i was getting, but wasn't careful enough when ordering...
is it that simple? if i get the SATA verision of the same enclosure am i good to go for using my 320 gig WD drive in it to copy from the Macbook and then later use the Macbook drive in it as a backup external?
one concern: is the size (320 gig) of the WD drive going to be an issue for working w/ a external enclosure? the manual w/ the StarTech IDE enclosure states: drive capacity support: 120 GB.....

Check the OWC web site they offer a range of external cases for Mac drives.

  • Storage controller driver for 4TB SATA drive

    Hi,
I am having trouble initializing a brand new 4TB SATA drive (Seagate Barracuda 3.5") . I am connecting it to my HP Envy 17 (Windows 7 64-bit) through a USB 3.0 hard drive dock for backup purposes only. Initialised it using GPT but nevertheless it refuses to show the true volume of the new HDD and the system keeps on recognizing it as a 1677.9GB drive.
I have been reading a little about this issue online and guess that only the volume above 2.2TB is detected but could not find a solution anywhere and Seagate doesn't offer one either. Have already tried to update the driver for this HDD (Microsoft driver version 6.1.7600.16385; driver date 6/21/2006) but the system tells me this driver should be up to date.
Thank you in advance for all your advice and guidance !

    Hi,
Check with the manufacturer of the external USB dock and make sure that it supports 4 TB hard drives.
Otherwise open up the RUN window (Admin) and try the following:
    diskpart
    list disk
select disk x ----> x equals the target disk
    clean
    exit
Now unplug the USB drive and plug it back in.  You should get a prompt to format and initialize the HD. Choose GPT and assign a drive letter and label.

  • Do I need to install drivers for a sata drive?

I have K7N2 Delta2-LSR and it came with a sata raid driver floppy disk.  Mine is just a single drive on which I want to install Windows. I read some where that it is not needed during windows installation unless I want to setup a raid system. Is this correct? My sata drive shows up under the external device icon, the small green arrow icon on the system tray. Is it suppose to be like that or is it because I did not install the sata drivers during windows installation? Any advice please?

What brand and model of SATA drive are you using? I had two other posts on this issue because one model of Maxtor drive that I tried works fine and another model does not work at all.
My configuration is like yours, I currently only have one SATA hard drive connected to this machine. There are multiple PATA drives on the machine and they all work fine together.
Seeing your post made me do more research on my motherboard. Until now, I thought the SATA controller on this board was not capable of RAID. I know know it is, thank you silverferro and Stu

    Nope. Didn't work.
I can try things all day but this doesn't make sense. Surely someone knows what bios settings are required (especially on the MSI board site) to set the bios on a MSI 945p platnium motherboard. I have the sata drive plugged into the Sata 1 connector and bios still says it is ide channel 4 master. The computer will boot with just the sata drive plugged in but the problems start when I plug the ide drives in on ide 1 or 2 or 3.

  • Bios settings for single SATA Drive Help

I have just installed a 945P Platnium mother board with a Pentium 4 3.4 extreme with HT tech.
I have 2 GB of memory, nvidia 1 gb video 9800 GT, I have 2 IDE hard drives: WD 320 GB(C:) and WD 120 GB (E:) and a CD/DVD drive (F:). I installed a WD 500 GB SATA drive on SATA 1 and the two IDE hard drives on IDE 1 on the same cable with the 320 GB as master and the 120 GB as slave. The CD is on IDE channel 2 as the master.  I have cloned the IDE 320 (c:) to the 500 GB Sata which is now the boot drive (c:).
I have been able to boot the computer but the CD/DVD drive doesn't show. If I unplug the the hard drives and reboot then the CD/DVD drive shows up.
My question is: I want the single 500GB sata as the boot drive (c:) (don't need RAID?). I want the two IDE drives with the 320GB as drive (e:) and the 120GB as drive (whatever) and the CD/DVD drive to show up as (F: or whatever).
I don't know what settings in the bios I need to be working with. I have been experimenting but would like the correct way to set the bios up.
    Thanks

  • 2.5" SATA enclosure for Macbook's stock HD?

My macbook's HD died last week. it's being repaired at apple's repair depot and i was told that they were going to need another week to do the work even a dummy user like me can finish within 1 hour: replace it and put the OSX back on.
So i figured this is a great chance for me to upgrade the HD and install the new one they are going to give me into an enclosure as an external backup HD. So next time if the HD breaks down again I also won't need to experience a few weeks without a computer. Has anyone done this? Any suggestions of which enclosure to get (low price preferred:)) would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

Excellent observations Paul, and I don't disagree
with you much. I felt compelled to respond a little
further. I consider myself to be a longtime Windows
expert. I have my own business where I build and
repair Windows computers. When I saw the plans for
Vista I realized Microsoft was going nowhere and
decided to make the switch. I made this switch based
on the information I get from podcasts mainly. I
listen to Leo Laporte, Maccast, and others who had
convinced me that Mac was the way to go. Like you
said in your post... "with windows, there are so many
    glitches, intrusions and threats.
Here is my Mac experience, in detail, from purchase
    to today:
1: Cannot print to either one of my printers. I
have a brother HL-2070N Laser network printer
connected to my D-Link DGL-4300 gigabit router and an
HP PSC1510 All-in One. I have tried everything.
Drivers, software, add printer panel, share windows
printer, you name it. Mac OSX sees it and when I
print nothing happens! I boot into Windows with
bootcamp and print away on my blackbook under
windows. Windows simply sees my shared HP and my
    network printer.
My HP 4050 Color laserjet works just great connected to either my Airport Base Station OR my Airport Express. I use the USB cable, no muss no fuss. Using Bonjour (or whatever it's called now) you open the printer prefs, click the "+" to add a printer and its right there. Perhaps there's a problem with your D-Link "GameFuel" router. Yes, yes I know your Windows computers (even the MacBook in Windows mode works fine with it... okay.... my Apple Airport Extreme units work great with all my Mac's)
2: As I mentioned in a previous post. I lost my
wireless connection last night and booted into
windows where it worked fine. Thought I had it
fixed, however, when I got home today - same thing!
My wirless indicator is flashing on and off and my
CPU is at 76%. When I turn off the wireless CPU
    goes to normal.
You already identified the problem and it sounds like an "Archive and Install" of OS X would fix it.
3: Luckily I do not have the RSD issue, however,
when I first got it home it did the RSD for 6 or 7
minutes upon first boot. I hit the power button,
screen would light up and then just cut off. When I
finally got into MAC OS, I did the SMC firmware
upgrade and the issue has not returned (fingers
    crossed).
4: As I sit here with my blackbook on my lap, my
legs are burning up, I am sweating and the palms of
my hands hurt. I am hard wired into my router
because my wireless does not work. Luckily I know
how to make ethernet connections and made a 100ft
cable so I could sit in front of the TV while I type
this out. What would a regular consumer do. I have
the tools, connectors, and wire for my business. I
    geuss I am lucky?
That SUXS, clearly a problem. None of my MacBook's (all three of them) have ever overheated like that. Never, not once. I'm not discrediting your problem I too am posting for others reading the forum.
5: I am a huge gamer. I have purchased pretty much
every game title that has come to market in the last
5 years. I built my own gaming rig in addition to
the other computers I have at the house and I enjoy
the game experience as much time will allow. Should
I go into detail about the MAC OSX gaming experience.
Don't get me wrong, I knew about this before I made
the switch. The games are simply too few and way
too late to market on the Mac side. This is well
known and simply a market forces issue. I
    understand this.
And this is a problem how??? You were already aware of the gaming status before you purchased your first Mac but clearly this IS a problem for you as you felt compeled to mention it.
I'll post my comments; I love the games that I play on all my Mac's. They continue to work and perform and exceed my expectations.
6: I upgraded to iTunes yesterday. Where is my
music? I lost everything. There are question marks
on all my titles. A search of the internet found
that many, many people are having the same issue. It
even made the front page of Digg.
I too upgraded my iTunes and didn't loose any of my songs. I hope you have corrected the problem.
6A: I play movies, videos, podcasts, and the like on
all my computers all the time. On about half of all
my old videos the video is now out of sync with the
voice and the video is choppy and warped. These
movies and videos played fine on computer just on
Tuesday, what happened. I noticed that the famed Wil
Wheaton had his music replaced after his story hit
the front page of Digg (after several phone calls to
Apple Support). I didn't work on Star Trek, does
that mean I don't get my music back?
????? I don't know what to say.... as afar as old (PC) videos, are we talking pron or are they important videos that you'd like to fix and convert to a suitable format?
Sidenote: I had to download VLC Player just to get
my videos up and running on my MAC. Windows has an
auto codec download feature so that I don't have to
worry about it. By the way, When I rip DVD's in the
MP4 format on my PC and transfer them to my MAC they
    don't play.
    See above comment.
Paul, I could go further. My hands are hot, my legs
are killing me and just just put $2500.00 into a
laptop that Apple says is a notebook because I should
not use it on my lap. I have a 1.8GHZ Thinkpad for
work and I need to switch over to it now so that I
can get some work done. By the way, those stickers
that Apple puts in the box of all there products - I
put one on my Thinkpad so everybody would comment and
I could launch into my new found MAC religion. I
have to say that I am having second thoughts.
You are 100% corect, your MacBook should NOT overheat your lap but not ALL MacBook's do that. I'll restate that our three MacBook's do not, nor have they ever gotten so hot we couldn't use them on our laps.
I hope that you respond. Very interested in what you
have to say about my MAC experience.
BTW, to date, I have never gotten a virus in my life!
I have had spyware I must admit. Once I learned
what not to do the issue was over.
That's cool, I have had many people send me email virus' even after I switched to a Mac (about 8 years ago).
Somebody mentioned to me that the Apple forums are
like a hospital...you only see the the posts when
    people have issues.
Yes that seems to make sense.
Could that also be the case with
Windows? You only hear about the bad things from
people who don't have a clue how to protect
    themselves?
When are there "good" things happening on a Windows computer, no seriously, tell me about them. I can give you an earful about how lame my Dell PC and laptop are.
Mac on man! I will still be fully converted at home
in a few months when I replace my custom built dual
core AMD with a Mac Pro!
Way cool - people on these forums are here to help.

  • Extra power cable needed for a SATA drive in a G4 AGP "Sawtooth"?

If one adds a SATA controller card and a SATA hard drive to a G4 AGP "Sawtooth", will a power cable like the one at the below link be needed, or would the necessary power cabling ordinarily come with the drive?

Thanks for the additional information, japamac.
That would be Left (or right angle 270º) for the data cable.
Which of the below data cables would be more appropriate, the 18" long one or the 39" long one?

If you have a collection of spare drives, instead of buying a collection of enclosures, you can buy this and plug each drive in as you need it. The drives just plug in the top and pop out like toast in a toaster when you're done. They have the USB 3.0 connection, which is faster than any HD, and are separately powered so you don't have to worry if the USB 3.0 port will provide sufficient power.

I'm wondering if I'm chasing a product that doesn't even exist.  I just want to find out whether there's anything on the market that would allow me to use the optical drive from my X41's base, via USB, with my X201.  I've had bad experiences with consumer USB optical drives, so if I can't track one down, I'm going to find one of those Dell hotswap optical drives with the mini-usb on the back and use that. • Ext enclosure for ex-MBP drive, wanting to get data

    Hi
Apple swapped out the drive for my MBP, 2.66ghz. I'd like to try and see if I can retrieve some data since it's uncertain how big a problem the drive was since they replaced the board.
Anyhow, I got a 2.5" usb 2.0 external enclosure from OWC. First, are there precautions I should take against electrical  discharge when installing the drive in the ext. enclosure? I  used to have one of those things you strapped round your wrist and  clipped to a table or whatever but with moving can't find it.
The ext. enclosure simply operates as a regular external drive, right?
I suppose I could just connect and see if it mounts, but thot I'd ask for suggestions first. And while that may well be the first option, what would the second option be if it doesn't mount?

Sir, thank you very much for that, I will check out. Is it superior to Disk Warrior? Right now, all I really would love to get is my FIrefox bookmarks, maybe not worth $100. Then again, I have another drive with lots of pics and other data I'd love to get, including some applications. Just curiously, do you think it can do a good job recovering those apps (I guess that's really a question for them, so no problem)?
Btw, I must also give a big hearty thanks for a number of other occasions you have rendered excellent advice--merci beaucoup!

I have a macbook 7.1, and I want use the mini-dvi port to drive a TV.  So, I need to buy a either a mini-dvi to S-video cable or a mini-dvi to HDMI cable.  My question is whether my MacBook requires a separate audio cable?  Obviously, I prefer one cable.
If it supports one but not the other without a separate audio cable, which one works.

    kwillard62,
This desktop has a HDMI and VGA port. If you only have VGA, you can try and find an adapter or a VGA to HDMI cable.

I recently purchased an Ipad for my mother with the same idea in mind thinking that I could simply buy icloud storage but have since discovered that icloud is not intended to be used as a storage solution ( total stupididty on behalf of apple). I asked an apple genius and was told that the only way around this is to use an external application such as drop box.
You would think that Apple would have thought this out better and set icloud up as a storage solution not just a back up and sharing mechanism!!

  • RE: eSATA express card/34 and External Hard Drive for MacBook Pro

I have a 17" MacBook Pro and do lots of movie editing. I need a fast external hard drive option to use. My internal is totally used up. Also need a back up drive.
I am a newbie and all of my info is based on googling. My FIRST QUESTION: Can I, and would it be a good solution, to use an express card 34 such as, Sonnet Tempo or Firtek SeriTek/2sM2-E with an external hard drive such as SeaGate 500GB or 300GB.
QUESTION 2: Why do so many of the SATA hard drives come without a case or enclosure?
And QUESTION 3: Does anyone have any recommendations or experience with the express card/34 and SATA external hard drives.
    Thanks alot,
    Jill Rand
And please, don't hesitate to tell me I am nuts...because I am peicing this info together without any experience at all.

    1. Yes, eSATA would be a good choice for an external enclosure with a SATA drive. Alternatively, you could use Firewire 800, but it's mostly a matter of choice.
    2. SATA drives a primarily used in desktop machines. SATA capable enclosures have made them usable outside of desktops.
    3. I can tell you from experience to get an enclosure with a good chipset. It makes all the difference in the world. Oxford is very good for firewire. Cypress AT2+ and Prolific 3507 are excellent for USB 2.0.
I have a case with the new Oxford 924 chipset (eSATA, FW 800, FW 400 & USB 2.0) and couldn't be any happier. An added bonus; it acknowledges OS commands to power down on inactivity. Link: http://www.cooldrives.com/esata-firewire-800-enclosure-case-external.html

  • Choosing a hard drive enclosure for iBook

I am looking to buy a cheap enclosure for the hard drive from my (wife's) g3 700 dual USB ibook that is now dead. What are the essential specifications that I need for an enclosure to work with this hard drive. It is the 20gb model, 2.5-inch Ultra ATA. Most of the descriptions say the internal interface is IDE. Some say SATA. What will I need to be sure it will work for this drive?
    Here's a cheap one--will it work:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817155002
    OTHER INFO:
Since my iBook is now dead, I want to sell all the parts. Since it will no longer boot into Target mode, I cannot erase the hard drive. Turns out that I'm glad I didn't erase it after first copying it, because something went wrong with the copying and not all the folders are accessible from my backup. I'm not exactly sure what went wrong, but the total copy should have been 18gb, and was only 13.5gb.
Apparently, when I selected all the folders from the root directory on the hard drive and dragged them to an external drive to copy them, the alias folders on my desktop did not copy the linked original folders and the original folders did not copy anywhere else. I would like to finish the copy and then erase the drive to sell on eBay. So I need an enclosure.

The Rosewill is exactly the one I bought. The shipping was $4.99, more than the enclosure!
    It went great.
The drive would not fit in the enclosure without modifying the drive by removing a couple of side screws that stick out too far, but I didn't want to keep the drive or the enclosure so I didn't mess around with it. I just ran it out in the open, not in the enclosure.
You just plug the drive into the enclosure plug, then plug the USB cable (which they supplied) into both the enclosure and your computer. It immediately mounted on my iMac and I got to work (see below).
Since it was USB 1.1, it was slow, which I knew in advance, but I wanted CHEAP not fast, and this did the trick.
I ended up downloading and using Carbon Copy Cloner 3.0 to be sure I got everything this time from the old drive. It worked great--I would highly recommend it!
I plan to eBay the enclosure. How cheaply do you think I can ship it? If you are interested, let me know and I'll send you the item# on eBay. It will be hard to beat Newegg's $8 with 3-day shipping!
