Encode at a lower bit rate when uploading to iPod nano 2nd gen

There is a feature that I liked when I used to put my music on my Motorola SLVR. When I synced my phone with iTunes I had the option to re-encode my files at a lower bit rate (I believe it was aac 128). I there a way to enable this feature for the iPod nano 2nd gen?

On-the-fly conversion is only available on the iPod shuffle. The iPod shuffle (probably because of it's limited capacity) has the option to "Convert higher bit rate songs to 128 kbps AAC". This option is not available for any other model iPod. For the larger iPods the files have to be converted in iTunes first or indeed have to have been imported in a compressed format prior to transfer

  • ITunes freezes when transferring to iPod Nano (2nd gen)

Hi All - Slightly atypical issue. I purchased a refurbished 2nd-gen iPod nano, but am having continued difficulty getting music onto it. I am not auto-synching but adding them manually.
The nano connects fine, iTunes sees it fine. However, when I start transferring songs, iTunes will randomly freeze up. What's strange is that I CANNOT shut iTunes down, even trying to end-task in Task Manager. I have to hard reboot my system, and as soon as the freeze happens, the iPod loses the "DO NOT DISCONNECT" screen and returns to the menu, as if the connection has been broken.
As of Today, October 21st 2007 I am running the most current versions of both iTunes as well as the iPod software.
Any advice? I have a very large (130GB+) iTunes library that I've painstakingly manicured to include all obscure artwork, correct genres, etc so I'd rather avoid re-installing everything from scratch.
Thanks in advance! This is driving me crazy!

I have the same problem on my nano (gen 1). I have done everything it says in the book, and nothing helps. I have restored several times, but it seems to make no difference. Sometimes everything is recorded, sometimes hardly anything. At this moment it made it through about 3/4 of my songs and has stalled. I don't even know if the Itunes program needs reinstalling or my Ipod is at fault.
I find it hard to believe this problem is not on the trouble shooting list.

  • When i connect my ipod nano 2nd gen, it charges but does not appear in windows or itunes.  I tried the reset but it didn't work.  how can i fix this?

I bough a 4g Ipod nano 2nd gen for my cousins birthday.  When i plug it into my computer it charges but does not show up in windows or itunes.  I tried reseting it, reinstalling itunes, everything the site said but it didn't help. I am trying to sync songs to it for my cousin, but it won't work with it not connecting.  Could the wire have something to do with it or is there a bigger problem here?

  • When connecting my ipod nano (5 gen) I get an error messege saying that it was recognized but not properly. Ive tried everything the support site says and it still not working. What do I do now?

When connecting my ipod nano (5th gen) I get an error messege saying that it was recognized but not propperly. I treid everything that the support site said to do but it still not working. What do I do no?

This came from another thread, but worked for me.  Problem is with newest iTunes 4.62.  Unistall iTunes, as well as its helper programs (Apple Application Support, Apple Mobile Divice Support, and Apple Software Update).  Reboot, and reinstall iTunes.  It will reinstall all the other ones and you should be able to connect your nano.  Good luck.

You would be better off posting in the iTunes for Windows forum area since your issue is with that rather than an iPod Nano.

  • My iPod Nano 2nd gen. has a black caterpillar-like shape on the screen when turned off. I recharged and reset. What else should I do?

My iPod Nano 2nd gen. has a black caterpillar-like shape on the screen when turned off.
It disappears when turned on. It must mean something. I recharged and reset. What else, if anything, should I do?

You can work through the remaining five 5 R's of troubleshooting.

It might also be a good idea to let the iPod's battery fully drain. Then charge it back up and restore it once more in iTunes.
Otherwise, it's likely a hardware issue with the iPod's LCD display, meaning you'll need to take or send your iPod in for service either via Apple or a third party repair service. Here is Apple's repair pricing.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/service/prices/
Note that they don't actually repair the device, but exchange it for one of the same generation, model, and capacity.  A third party service will actually replace the damage part for a little less.  Google "iPod screen repair" and you should get a number of results to work with.

  • When udgrading my ipod touch 2nd gen to version 4.2

My iTunes takes about 58minutes to DOWNLOAD the software update for my iPod Touch 2nd Gen (which is an incredibly long time)
And when it gets to the last minute, it says in the status bar ''Processing request''.
Then an error notification pops up and says I'll have to try the download another time because the network connection timed out. But my internet is still on?
I have been on the internet the whole time waiting for the software to install to my iPod.
Does anyone have a suggestion why this happened or how I can fix it?

  • Will Match sync higher bit rate songs to an iPod Nano?

Hi, well I was just wondring whether my music would be updated to the 256kbps bit rate on my fith gen Nano if I did decide to upgrade to iTunes match. It'd be a pointless upgrade for me if it didn't since I don't have an iPhone or a Touch and I can't really be lugging around my iPad when running.
    Thanks for the help

Yes, but keep in mind that if most of the music you had before was 128kbps upgrading all of them to 256 jobs will cut the amount of songs your nano can hold roughly in half. You will now be able to hold roughly 1,000 for the 8gb model or 2,000 for the 16gb instead of 2,000 and 4,000. If you don't have it filled up then I would upgrade, but if you do then I would just leave it alone. 128 Kbps AAC is really not bad if it's ripped from a cd and hasn't been re-encoded.

  • When I sync my nano (2nd gen) the music doesn't transfer anybody help?

I've been through the 5R's several times trying to get music back on to my nano (it is completely empty since I've done Restore)
I have tried auto sync (with selected playlists) and I have tried manual transfers and nothing works.
The ipod shows on iTunes and it says it's syncing, but no content is transfered. When I try to do it manually when I pick up the song or playlist it has a circle with a line through it and doesn't move it.

The ipod shows on iTunes and it says it's syncing, but no content is transfered.

  • My PC Shuts Down When I Plug In My New IPod Nano 3rd Gen.

The title of this post pretty much says it all. Got me my new iPod Nano 3rd gen. yesterday. Brought it home, booted up the puter, loaded iTunes and plugged that sucker in. Well first iTunes kindly instructed me that I would have to download it's newest software, which I did.
Then soon afterwards when I thought i was set, I plugged in my new 3rd gen iPod Nano to the pc and as soon as I did that my pc shut down completely, and restarted. Shut down is putting it mildly, I mean it just went 'kablink" and then was restarting.
I tried uninstalling iTunes, cleaning my temp folder, my internet cache, then reinstalling iTunes anew, still nada. All to no avail, people, because each and everytime I plug in my new iPod Nano, no sooner than i do this my pc summarily goes "kablink" on me and starts booting up again.
NOW I STILL have my iPod Nano 2nd gen, and it works fine, even with the newest iTunes software, it doesn't screw up my pc like the new 3rd gen iPod Nano does.
Now I am to conclude that the problem lies in the 3rd gen iPod itself. How could it not? My iPod Nano 2nd gen works absolutely fine, and everytime I plug in my new iPod Nano, I shut down in a flash withtout fail. Anyone of you have this error? I would love to know short of calling iTunes tech support about what to do about this, this is a MAJOR bummer for sure. Now I have to be concerened about whether or not I am ever going to get this thing to work now.
Is the iPod broken? If not why the shutdowns then? Please advise. Many thanks in advance.

Hey, I bought an iPod nano 3rd gen yesterday and I have exactly the same prolem you are describing in your message. Have you found any solution to this?

  • If I have converted my purchased iTunes songs to a lower bit rate what will happen when I join iTunes match? Will they match up or will these be stored as duplicates of the same song?

If I have converted my purchased iTunes songs to a lower bit rate what will happen when I join iTunes match? Will they match up or will these be stored as duplicates of the same song?
I ask because I primarily use my work laptop which has limited space so I usually convert my purchases to 160k from 256k in order to save space. I want to sign up for iTunes Match but I'd like to know before I do so I can understand how I will have to set up my library.

What I may do is start a brand new library there, copy my tracks from my work laptop using Home Share and then the script to get things in sync before starting over again there too.
Why create a new library? Just add the tracks from the laptop to the existing library on the Mac.
    crichton007 wrote:
I was just hoping to hear definitively whether or not there was some sort of intelligence built into iTunes Match that would match these up...
How do you mean? If you down-convert purchased tracks you've fundamentally changed the files so iTunes can no longer recoginize them as "purchased." And, indeed, they no longer are since they are brand new files. Of course these new files will only be "matched" or "uploaded."

  • Better compression at lower bit rates

I've not had much luck getting good h.264 compression from AME at lower bit rates. Are there some secrets that someone has shared? I used to be quite adept back in the day, so it's frustrating having to upload giant files to Vimeo. Any good guidance?
I should be more specific. It seem like close to 5 Mbps is need for full HD, but I remember Flash expert Fabio getting great results in less than 1:
    http://sonnati.wordpress.com/
It would be great if AME had some addition controls.

Actually, you cannot hear the difference when the background noise is loud, or example, public transport. I suggest that one uses a noise cancellation headset. $$$
