Encode Dobly Digital 5.1?

I used to have an AppleTV and converted a lot of material into the .m4v format that had h.264 video and AC3 5.1 Audio in them. I've since sold my AppleTV and want to convert these files into .m2ts files using Compressor for playback on my PS3. I can't extract the existing AC3 file into an elementary stream so I think I'm going to have to re-encode it.
When I add the files to Compressor it correctly recognizes the audio as AC3 5.1. I select the Dolby Digital Professional Setting and it creates a 5.1 Channel file - but I only get audio out of the Left and Center channels.
Any help?

The solution to my problem was with Perian. Perian, which was being used for playback when encoding, was defaulting into Dolby Pro Logic. When I changed Perian's settings to Multi-channel output I got six active channels.

pl provide me example code for this

Hi asaccullo.
The recommended settings for encoders are using the counters in the daq cards. Using digital I/O’s is not recommended, the encoders send digital signals but one of the main differences between using digital IO vs counters is that counters are designed to handle these type of events.
Here I found several examples in ni.com/code that you might check:
Imitation Quadrature Encoder with DAQmx Counter Tasks
Use Counter Frequency to obtain an Encoder Rotational Speed
An Elvis is a daq device, so this should work for you.
I also found an example for myDAQ, it uses the DIO but with a counter task in the set up.

• Dobly digital ok, but no dts sig

Hi all,
From pjc's sticky post I've been able to get Dobly Digital out through my SB Li've 5. to my receiver. However I can't seem to get DTS working properly.
I've checked to ensure my audio playing software sends straight to SPDIF and does no decoding (well it can't decode DTS anyways). I've tried a DTS wav file and a DTS movie. Neither have any sounds. The receiver detects a signal and I hear static when it's set to PCM, but no DTS signal.
I've tried playing sources using WinDVD, Media Player classic, Media Player 6.x, Media Player 9.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Is it possible that SB Li've 5. can't support outputing the DTS signal to the digital out line because it requires too much bandwidth?
Thanks in advance.Message Edited by drbling on 08-28-2006 03:07 PM

I tried putting the DVD in a regular (albiet cheap) DVD player and the receiver wouldn't detect DTS audio either. I am positi've the receiver supports it. I only bought it a week ago and it has a DTS logo on it.
After further investigation I'm leaning on #. Is it possible my receiver can decode DD ok but its DTS functions are broken?
I wonder if I can convince my friend to bring his receiver to my place to confirm :P
Thanks for the help sonic.

• Encoding Dolby Digital 5.1 (AC3) sound in MP4 files using AC3 pass-through

Looking for an application that will encode Dolby Digital 5.1 (AC3) sound in an .mp4 container using AC3 pass-through for playing videos with surround sound on ATV.
Handbrake is out of the question because I run Tiger. The Tiger version cannot do AC3 pass-through.
Visual Hub is no longer available.
Any other options?

You may need Apple's MPEG2 QT plugin as well for MPEGStreamclip.
Also, consider if running windows in parallels/Boot Camp etc that there's a windows version, and possibly a linux version.
VisualHub code was released open source - Google FilRedux and PunyVid (iSquint derivative). Not tried either though.

• How to encode Dolby Digital (AC3) 24 bit

I noticed that all my dolby digital setings in Compressor are in 16 bit. Is there a way to have them set on 24 bit. In A.Pack, you could encode the audio in 24 bit.

I could be misunderstanding something, but I've been reading Apple's whitepaper to make sure of the details.
"48 bit" is unclear, because it could mean 12x4 or 16x3. Both combinations are impossible with ProRes 422.

• Sound Blaster able to encode Dolby Digital 5.1 and abo

Hi there.
I recently buy a new motherboard without dolby digital encoding onboard (the older, nForce2 (asus a7n8x deluxe had that capability, the new one, doesnt, it is an asus a8n-sli premium)
I use the coaxial digital out to connect my computer to the home theatre with only one cable (that rules), also, enabling "cloning" allow me to listen using at least 4 speakers, instead of the two front ones.
Someone told me to buying a "cheap" sound blaster will do the trick.
My options are (from cheap to expensi've):
CREATIVE AUDIGY SE SB0570 OEM
CREATIVE AUDIGY SE SB0570 BOX
CREATIVE AUDIGY2 VALUE
CREATIVE S.BLASTER X-FI PLATINUM
CREATIVE S.BLASTER X-FI XTREME
For me, the best option is the SB0570 BOX. The Audigy2 VALUE have 2.5 times the price of it.
What do you recommend?
Thanks in advance!

Analog to Digital Conversion is exactly that: It translates the Analog input signal of eg. a microphone into a PCM digital signal, with 24-bit precision. That is essentially the Line-IN and the Microphone input. (Although for the microphone they tend to have lower precision but amplify the signal).
There is a sticky at the top of this forum which you should read to understand the difference between the various digital formats.
To make it clear: The Sound Blasters have an SPDIF output which can send digital signals. However it does not have a Dolby Digital compression engine, so it will either send uncompressed PCM signals if it has processed them before. If you have a source that is already in Dolby Digital then you can redirect it through the SPDIF output and get full surround sound. This ONLY happens on DVDs, because they come precompressed.
Everything that gets processed on the soundcard is outputted as PCM digital: For 6-channel audio there are 3 connections which end up on 3 DACs (Digital to Analog Converter) where the digital signal is then made into analog for the speakers to be able to play it. The SPDIF connection simply bypasses the DACs (the DACs of the receiver are used) but takes only connection, that of the front speakers.
Dolby Digital AC-3 is a compression mechanism, which compresses sound (much like mp3), so that it can fit in only one connection, where uncompressed only a stereo signal would pass. (In doing so, it also lowers quality!)
So: If you want to use a 7. speaker system with a Sound Blaster you have to go analog, which also means 3 cables (because they have 3 wires for the channels + ground). And I don't think Dolby or DTS supports more than 5. channels for the time being, so not even with Dolby Encoding onboard could you do it with one cable.

• Encoder with Digital I/O

We need some help here of reading encoder value from PXI 6527 Digital I/O. Our encoder is of 5000ppr i.e 5000 pulse per revolution. This pulse input
we are giving to our digital I/O. Plz help us to solve this speed detection problem. What's the input pulse rate for 6527. Thanks,

The 6527 doesn't have an input pulse rate. All reads and writes are in response to function calls, i.e., static timing. Your software will have to poll the data fast enough to determine when it changes state. This will depend on your rotation speed.
What you really need for this application are counters, not a digital board. NI makes the 6602 counter timer board which will work fine.

• DTS-HD DOBLY DIGITAL TRUEHD questions

i bought a new harman kardon receiever, supposely it says it'll support dolby digtal HD and DTS HD and all that new hd audio stuff. right now im connecting my PS3 to it. using an optical cable (suggested by Magnolia Home Theater people, claiming hdmi can not pass HD audio for PS3, i actually find that true, hdmi can only pass stereo sound for ps3... yah kinda weird)
so anyways when i watch movie, i go in to the audio selection and selected DTS-HD. But when the movie start playing, on the screen it only says "DTS". soo................ how do i know if it's really producing DTS-HD sound?
oh yah the one i have is AVR-254. (<---- model just incase one of the mod or admin ask me for the model)

Hello u_hsen,
I’m sorry to hear that you’ve run into a bit of an issue with your new equipment. Hopefully I can help get you pointed in the right direction for a solution.
I read the owner’s manual for your Harman Kardon receiver and discovered that it should dynamically identify the type of input signal. You can, of course, manually change these settings as you determine necessary. If you don’t have a copy of the manual, I found it for download at the manufacturer’s website.
On looking at the Playstation website, I went to the support section to see what troubleshooting tips there are for Blu-ray audio. According the site, you should select Linear PCM (under BD/DVD settings) as the audio output for Dolby True HD and DTS Master Audio. I’d recommend visiting the site for full details.
I hope this helps,

• Can't get Encoded Digital Audio to work with HDMI again

I like to connect my 15" Retina Macbook to my Pioneer VSX-1121-K receiver using a high speed HDMI cable (high speed for 3D). My sound settings for a long time have been very reliable; in Audio Midi Setup I had the HDMI output set to 48 kHz + "Encoded Digital Audio" and had no major issues. My encoded Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1 signals were being passed through to the Pioneer receiver just fine.
So then I got Mavericks recently and everything seemed fine for a couple of days; when suddenly, Audio Midi Setup decided it never wants to allow the "Encoded Digital Audio" format to work.
I select VSX-1121 under System Preferences/Sound, but only get the standard blah PCM over the HDMI. Here's the weird part I don't understand: when I go to Audio Midi Setup and change the format from "2ch-24bit Integer" to "Encoded Digital Audio", it automatically switches the sound to Built-In Output and doesn't budge when I tell it to use the HDMI output.
I tried changing the sound effects & alerts to the Pioneer and back to Built-In Output, but that didn't affect anything. I've tried restarting, disconnecting the HDMI and plugging it back in, turning the receiver off/on, turning HDMI Control off/on, tried a different HDMI cable and receiver input -- all no dice.
It won't let me select 96 kHz for the HDMI either. What up with that? I was fooling around with FLACs in 192 and 96 kHz about a month ago with no problems whatsoever, and playing 5.1 DVDs without any of this weirdness. If it's somehow Mavericks' fault I want a big fat patch on this.
Other details: receiver's connected to a Panasonic VT30 that I use as a second screen with the Macbook for movies and stuff. Also have a current model AppleTV connected. I assume they're both not affecting anything.
Any solutions or insights would be appreciated.

I had a similar problem. Took me a while to figure out, but the problem was in the HDMI settings in the receiver, NOT the software.
My setup:
Macbook Air > Mini Display Port to HDMI converter into Onkyo Receiver > HDMI Out of Onkyo into Panasonic TV.
Symptoms:
I was getting stereo fine, but not 5.1 (options grayed out etc). You were on the right track; I unplugged the TV which opened up all the multi channel options for HDMI. Turns out the HDMI out settings in the receiver were set to pass Audio to the TV. So the Audio Device Settings on my Mac viewed the TV as the destination device. But as the TV only supports stereo, that's all I could select through Audio Device Settings and VLC etc.
Solution:
On the receiver I went to Setup > Hardware Settings > HDMI and switched the audio off for HDMI Out. Now the Mac sees the receiver as the final destination and I can select HDMI (Encoded Output) etc. from VLC. That sends proper Dolby Digital 5.1 etc. nicely.
Note:
I can select all the multi channel options for HDMI in Audio Devices Settings (as supported by my Onkyo Receiver), but I just left mine at 2ch-24 bit. Seems as long as you select Encoded Output in VLC it will send 5.1 perfectly and no issues with regular stereo playback for music.

• DTS or Dolby Digital codec plugin?

Has anyone seen or heard of a Dobly Digital (AC3) or DTS codec AU plugin? I would find that MOST useful. I haven't been able to find anything of the sort.
JB

Never heard of one. Encoding is only done by Dolby (either using A.Pack or now Compressor, or Dolby's high-end software in non-realtime, or DTS software. You can find them at respecitve web sites. Since Dolby 5.1 comes with Compressor, it's definitely the cheapest solution. DTS software is fairly pricey.
I asked sales at Dolby and they said ther is no "real-time" encoding/decoding solution for monitoring as the encode/decode process adds significant delay to the signal path, which doesn't make for easy mixing/monitoring. They also said there are no plans to allow compressor to output Dolby Digital EX (6.1; surround back) at all.
So looks like we are stuck with downmixing to surround files, then processing through Compressor, then monitoring in DVD Player using a HomeTheater receiver (be sure to switch the digital outs to S/PDIF out in Audio/Midi setup dialog).

• Cmss 3d doesnt work with dolby digital live pack

0cmss 3d doesnt work with dolby digital li've pack4 From the page of Dobly Digital Li've pack
"Stereo content (MP3, WMA, CD audio or games) that is transformed into 5. surround sound using Creative CMSS-3D or DTS Neo:PC can also benefit from this encoding scheme that will further enhance the entertainment value of your Sound Blaster X-Fi."
with that said, i bought the pack that has both DDL and DTS Interacti've. but while playing music my reciever only gets front left and right channels. No sound comes from the center or rear channels. This is with CMSS 3D on. With analog all 5 speakers work. Before installing this pack, my reciever got PCM input from the optical line. Thus only the front channels working. now with this pack the speaker recognises that the signal is Dolby or DTS yet, only the front channels work. in short there is no difference with this pack.
could someone please explain to me how to get the whole 5. working with Dolby or DTS
thank you
Sound Blaster X-Fi Platinum, Driver 2.8.003
Windows 7 x64 Build 700

thank you for the promp reply
the problem was with the reciever. just a change in setting was all it took
but now i have anoter problem
how do i bypass dolby and dts signals from movies to my reciever
before i simply had to set spdif out as default sound device and set ac3filter to spdif passthru
now the driver panel tells me that SPDIFOut will be exclusvely be used by DTS Interactiv. it doesnt pass the signal through from Media player classic or powerdvd.
am i expected to turn off DTS Interacti've or DDL when watching a movie and needing to pass on the signal?

• Question reagarding digital movie playb

I?have a z5450 and a sound blaster x-fi fatality f
ps.
I have a direct analog input and digital coax input. For playing dvd movies I use windvd 8 platnuim. In my sound card settings, I tried to get the spdif input setting to "SPDIF bypass" but as soon as I close the window, it switchies back to "dobly digital/DTS SPDIF-In decode". I have set my Windvd 8 to "digital spdif to external processer" mode. I have it set the expantion to "dobly pro logic IIx movie". I have full sounds in all speakers, but the sound is really low on all the speakers. I have to turn it wayyyy up to hear the movie. So after allllll that work, it would play better if I had set it to 6 ch direct. So, what Am I doing wrong. ps?I know that the proplem isnt big , but when you have a 600 dollor 5. suround system and a 200 dollor sound card, prefection is a standard

• Are the movie trailers accessed thru Apple TV in Dolby Digital?

BExcuse none of them show as being in Dobly Digital when I play them. Thanks in advance for any clarification.

On my Apple TV in the description for Skyfall, Life of Pi & The Birds it just shows 1080p & CC (no DD symbol) whereas Argo & Psycho shows 1080p DD & CC, I am just going by the film description on the screen before purchasing. If the description doesn't show that little DD symbol, I assume it is not in Dolby Digital and likely not to give it buying consideration.
