Encoded assets

Greetings,
Where do the encoded assets live? I know there is a command to delete them, I just want to see how much space they are taking up.
thanks!
Laurie

I have gone through the resources folder I have found nothing that is name specific to my project. All the names are quite generic. They all seem like elements to templates. I have many QT's that have been encoded and none of their original names are there.
Maybe the question should be...is there a naming convention for encoded assets within the "resources" folder that would make them apparent?
thanks!
Laurie

As I understand it, encoding fomats your digital video clips and photos (assets) into Standard DVD mp2 format so that it can be burned to a DVD.  If there has been an error in the encoding process, then you remove the old encoded assets and start over.  There are numberous reasons why there can be errors in the encoding process.

  • Encoded Assets Not Saved?

My project is one of those which takes exceptionally long to encode. It contains two movies, one with chapters. Six theme menus.
I'm using my Dual 2.7 machine.
After a successful burn, I thought perhaps that subsequent burns would be faster, since the assets had been encoded already during the first burn.
But no, in order to burn another DVD, iDVD begins the entire encoding process all over again. Aren't the encoded versions saved anywhere?
Interestingly, in iDVDs Customize > Status menu, one of the two movies (the one without chapters, and the smaller of the two) is shown as "Done", while the other, larger movie (with chapters) just has a a grey bar after it.
This project takes over an hour to process the menus alone and overnight to do the rest, so this is quite the inconvenience.
Yes, I know that burning to a Disk Image and burning through Disk Utility is an easy way to make multiple copies, BUT, this project requires a dual layer disk, and when creating a Disk Image, iDVD pops up a warning dialog stating that dual layer DVDs burned from an image may not play well on some players. I would prefer to not run the risk that the DVDs may not play on some machines, since we are distributing them to a large group of people.
I own Toast 7 and can easily copy the DVD I already burned, but it strikes me as strange that I need a third-part application to be able to do what I'm trying to do.
So my question is: Is my experience typical?
Does iDVD actually NOT make a copy of the encoded assets?
Why does one movie show up as "Done" and the other not?
Thank you to any who can shed some light!
    Jeff

There are two movies on the DVD... one is about 2hrs15min or so, the other is about 27 minutes. The longer of the two never shows "Done" status. The other does. This after one successful burn.
When I attempt another burn, it starts all over by encoding the menus first. When I saw that it was going through the encoding process I quit the program because I didn't want to wait 12 or 14 hours for it to finish again, I knew I could simply burn a copy of the first disk using Toast, so that's what I've been doing, but I can't help but think making a copy might be more prone to errors than burning direct from iDVD.
    Thanks for your interest!

  • Where are my encoded assets going?

I created a DVD in iDVD 7.1.2 and after the disc burned, I saved an archive file. I checked to "keep encoded assets" with the archive file. However, when I open up the archived project file, I still have to encode the assets again. Everything works fine, but I have 4 videos on the disc and am trying to just change one and not have to re-encode the other 3 videos as well.
    What am I doing wrong?
    Thanks,
    Jamie

The default location is in the Pictures/Screenshot folder.  You can change the location to wherever you'd like with a command in the Terminal application.  These websites describes how:
Change the Screen Shot Save File Location in Mac OS X
Quickly Change OS X's Default Screenshot Format and and location.
Changing the Screenshot Capture Location - Mac|Life
If you want to change the format of the screenshot from the default .png to some other like jpeg  the second link describes that.

  • Deleting encoded Assets

I am having a great deal of trouble deleting images from slide shows, replacing them with new images, and then burning the revised project.
I know I should delete the encoded assets and I do so before burning the revised DVD, but the old images in the slide show still show up. When I then click into the problem show(s) the new assets are there and the deleted ones are gone, but if I preview the show the old images are still there! What can I do to remve these ollld images?

That's a new one... Are you at iDVD 6.0.1?
    This might help:
This frequently helps solve some problems. Quit iDVD. Search for the file named com.apple.iDVD.plist and trash it. (A new one will be created next launch of iDVD.) Or look in: User/Library/Preferences. This may solve project loading errors too. Restart and use Disk Utility to Repair Permissions.

  • IDVD crashing upon encoding assets

    Hi,
I have scanned all sorts of forums and have not been able to find the answer needed to fix the following problem. During burning a DVD, iDVD crashes when it encodes assets.
I have 50GB left on my HD, did permissions repair, rebooting computer, changing quality settings, deleted the iDVD plist file and nothing works. I have tried burning to DMG, and Video_TS file. Same goes. Some of my assets on the film are HD, but this never stopped it from burning before.
Can anyone give me any advice or share a solution to this problem?
    Thanks,
    M

    Hi Bengt,
You bring up a good point. The project was shot in XDCAM 25fps. After postproduction, the file became APRHQ. Due to the weight of the file on export (about 5 GB), I decided to export it through Quicktime conversion as NTSC SD Widescreen. The video weighed about 1.06 GB, so I decided to use it.
I looked at when it quit during the encoding process (during encoding another asset), so I saved that as a last reserve option.
The DVD burned with the original APRHQ file, but now the question: Why would it not accept the QT converted SD export?
    Best,
    M

  • Encoding assets gets stuck at 14% during DVD burn

I've been using DVD Studio Pro for a couple of years to create demo reels on DVD. Recently I was updating our reel and imported some new video and audio files. When I tried to burn a DVD it seemed to get stuck at 14% while encoding assets and wasn't able to complete the burn. I tried burning an older version from an older DVD Studio Pro file and it seemd to work fine. I'm just wondering what's different about this new version that's making it unable to burn a DVD. It must have something to do with the new files I imported. Is there anything I can do to fix this.
I've been using DVD Studio Pro V 2.05
    Thanks,

Compressor is okay, better than it was before. You can also use other encoders such as bitVice, www.innobits.se and another at digigami.com Basically Compressor will do what DVD SP will do but with more control
You will not have to rebuild the reel, once you encode the assets (AC3 and m2v) just replace the items in the track, which is done in the following (also has some Compressor info)

A movie showing Compressor is also here

  • Do i have to let idvd encode assets before i burn a disk image?

I never really noticed this before, but when I go to Project Info, it tells me that my assets are encoding. Do I have to wait for this to happen before burning a disk image, or does it encode the assets while I'm burning a disk image?
    Thanks,
    Bob

If you have selected BEST Peformance encoding, you have an option to have your content encoded in the background as you work on the project, saving you a little time.
In any event, all encoding must take place before iDVD can burn to a DVD disc or write a disk image file.  This happens when you tell iDVD to "Burn".

  • Having Trouble "Encoding Assets" - error in the log each time...

hello there - finished making my DVD, and am trying to build/format. But each time the Build is cancelled because of an error trying to encode a particular video assett. The Video assett is a Final Cut Pro Movie File, exported to be a quicktime movie. (for some reason, my compressor isn't working right now), so I exported it as a quicktime file - the file is fine in quicktime, and fine in the simulator - but DVD SP doesn't want to encode the asset - what can I do?

Not a silly question - the file is NOT self contained...
But check this out... I've used a friend's computer (mine bugged out in the end) and was able to export the file from Final Cut HD using compressor. I did it with two pass VBR, best quality 90-minute encode, so in the end I got an mpeg2 (m2v) file for video, and an AIFF file for audio. Back in DVD Studio Pro, I replaced the former assett with this new Assett, which I've used many times without difficulty - but now (and i"ve tried twice), when I build/format, I don't get an error message - instead the computer actually freezes/crashes.
very strange - he has had zero problems like this with his computer, and this is the first time using his final cut / dvd studio pro programs..
    any ideas?
    thanks,
    Geoff
this is a silly question gsobelle, but is yoru QT a

  • Encoding Assets

Why must DVDSP encode the entire file before it finds out that either the file in an Invalid Video Asset or the video bit rate is too high?
By the way: what is the best possible quality I can get to a 10 min 33 sec film?
    Thanks!

Your best bet is encoding outside of DVD SP
    Take a look here
    http://dvdstepbystep.com/faqs_3.php
    and here
    http://dvdstepbystep.com/faqs_7.php
    and the calculator here
    http://www.videohelp.com/calc.htm
Bottom line is you can push the limits on a 10 minute 33 second movie if that is all that is going on, but I would always dial things down to make sure there is no playback problems.

  • How to change disk space for encoding assets to external disk drive

My laptop has only 1G left and I can't seem to burn a video with iDVD 6. An error message says: "Not enough free disk space for encoding the remaining assets."
How can I use my external hard drive, where my project is being stored, instead for encoding the remaining assets?

1GB left? Wow - I'm surprised you aren't having trouble with the OS!
Normally, OS-X likes at least 10% of your hard drive kept free for OS use.
You REALLY need to fee up hard disk space before you have major problems.
As for: > How can I use my external hard drive, where my project is being stored, instead for encoding the remaining assets?
As far as I know, you can't.

  • IDVD wont encode the asset-HELP?

Using iMovie 6.01. I export from iMovieHD to iDVD and after setting up menus etc I look at properties and the asset movie isnt encoding....sits stagnant. This was a project started in iMov 05 but the reason I upgraded was the same reason. Any suggestions?
    Ramjet

Hey I've been having problems with iDVD 6 not encoding assets too.
I noticed that when you change the encoding option from Best Quality to Best Peformance (or vice versa) you get the empty bar and no encode.
iDVD will still encode it when you burn, but it won't seem to do it automatically in the background as it should.
    I haven't found a solution yet......

  • Assets keeps "unlinking" during encoding  Building Not Successful

This keeps happening ever since I upgraded to leopard. My assets go offline in the middle of the build. They are not deleted or anything of the sort. They just become unattached to the file. When I try to relink it doesnt do anything. I have to delete the asset form the track and or menus and relink then drop it in the track and attach to the buttons. its a headache HELP!!!

Are you encoding assets otuside of DVD SP first and bringing them in? Are any of these assets reference movies? Are the assets on internal or external drives? Which version of DVD SP are you using? Any more details? Did you do a clean install of the OS? Did you take any steps to try to fix things like deleting prefs?
Also do you have Tiger around or a clone of your Tiger drive? Does it build when booting off that?
Sorry for the questions, but sometimes some more details point to where issues may be.

  • Finding and deleting the encoded file IDVD

    hi,
i tried a onestep dvd and encoded from a camera. the dvd process stopped because hard drive memory ran low. i closed the project, and i can't find the file that just sucked up 6 GB worth of memory. it was never saved anywhere since it was one step what folders would it save to.

I tried this (restart) and did NOT reclaim the space. My issue is that I was burning a ONE-STEP dvd from a file, and something happened mid-burn. So the burn failed, I started with 13 GB of space (ok, that's not the 20 you recommended, but I thought even 10 would be okay for this burn). Anyway, next thing I know I only have 1 GB left-- however, I don't know where to find the encoded assets, since there is NO dvd project folder associated with the one-step process. The imovie file is located on a separate hard drive, and a search of my computer doesn't reveal anything I can identify as space sucking dvd files. where are those encoded assets?
    PLEASE HELP!

  • Problem with psychedelic colours after encoding in iDVD6

I'm working on a long project in iDVD6 that just fits on a dual-layer disc. Everything is ok except for one particular movie. This clip starts out in mostly a greyscale colour scheme then dissolves to full colour after a few minutes. In the project, this plays fine.
I encode to a disc image and no errors are reported. On a dual g5, this takes about 10 hours to encode.
When I mount the image and check it, this colour problem arises. After the grey sequence, the colour sequence looks like random colour garbage. Very psychedelic but not the look I need for this project.
I tried deleting the encoded assets, re-exporting the movie file in question a couple times, and also sneaking some colour information into the greyscale opening sequence via a single line of colour pixels across the top of the 640x480 frame.
I will try exporting the movie from my editor with another codec. Any other suggestions for fixing my LSD video problem?
    Thanks,
    Jaeson

    Hi
Was just a shoot in the dark. I try to have > 25Gb free. So You are well up to it.
    No clever ideas - sorry.
Not knowing the origin to Your problem - General approach when in trouble is as follows:
    Many possible origins. Most common:
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk if it is less than 10Gb should rather have 25Gb
    • Hard disk is untidy: Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disk (Apple Disc Util tool)
    • Delete iMovie pref file - or rather start a new user/account - log into this and re-try
    • Third party plug-ins that doesn't work OK
    • Program miss-match: iMovie 6.0.3 or 6.0.4, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4 - is OK
iMovie pref file resides: Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences
    and is named: com.apple.iMovie.plist
While iMovie is NOT RUNNING - move this file out to desk-top.
    Now restart iMovie.
    Yours Bengt W
