Encoded picture breaking up with vertical lines (interlacing?)

I've exported a video (720 x 576) from FCE. It contains a lot of fast-moving action from an athletics event so I'd expect a bit of picture distortion on the version I've published to YouTube which you can see here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TfUdF_D-I20&fmt=18
You'll see vertical lines appearing at certain points and I wondered if anyone knew if it was possible to avoid this happening?
I have a feeling it's something to do with the interlacing of the video. Would that be right?
Thanks for anyone's help.
Mark

David, I am of course referring to the HORIZONTAL lines. Clearly I don't know which way is up today, which is the result of a late night edit to get that film finished in the early hours.
When exporting from FCE, there is an option to deinterlace the source video. Should I check this box and will this solve the problem?
I'm not at home just now so I can't try it out until this evening.
Thanks for your swift reply.

  • My macbook pro keeps freezing with vertical lines on the screen

I have a 2010 macbook pro that has worked wonderfully until now.  As of late it keeps freezing with vertical lines across the screen.  To me this indicates a hardware problem, but I ran a diagnostic (restarted while holding D) and it didn't find any errors.  It seems that it happens when I move or bump my macbook, leading me to think it may possibly be a disk problem, but I'm not sure how to check this.  Anybody else ever have this problem or could suggest a fix for it?

You can try a pram reset, which might help with the display, but the bumoing thing is what concerns me.
    PRAM reset:
Power down, power back up and hold the following keys before the start up chime.
option, command, P, R,(no commas) continue to hold these keys till you hear the start up chime 2 times then release.
Reboot see if this helps, the bumping part scares me.
    Hope this helps

I have a IMac - Mac OSX version 10.4 and présently i see only verticals lines on my desktop and my mouse, i mean the arrow and still mouving but with a little square with vertical lines at the right. This appened when i was talking with a friend on Skype, by error i did click on the video and slowly the vertical lines appeared and covered all ma desktop. Since then, it still there and the only things i see it is the vertical lines and the arrow with the little square.
How can i fix this problem ?

Hello, sounds like Video card  and/or heat problems.
Have you blown the dust out lately? Let it cool for an hour or so.
Get Temperature Monitor to see if it's heat related...

One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode).

grey screen no apple followed by blue screen with vertical lines. Graphics and logic board replaced <6 months ago. What to do? I held down shift, it gets HOT HOT and makes noises. (for safety mode) followed by a blank grey screen and blue screen. Then tried the other way (sorry, I think  it's command alt delete? I don't remember) and it turned from grey (no apple symbol) to blue blank. Then third time, grey followed by blue with vertical lines, not blocky clear lines that you can see if you are close to it.
    Thanks for any help!

You have to take the computer to the Apple store to have it checked out.

  • I-Mac crash with vertical lines down the screen

My i-Mac is about 4 years old, running OS-X version 10.8.2.
About 2 weeks ago my system suddenly crashed and the whole screen was filled with vertical lines - alternate blue and white.
Yesterday the same thing happened, except that the vertical lines were alternate red and white.
Both times I turned the desktop off, left it for a minute or two, and then turned it back on again. The system then booted up normally and I was able to access all my applications as normal.
To date my i-Mac has been very reliable but I am a bit worried that this 'crash' problem has now occurred twice. I have kept the operating system up-to-date and am running OS-X 10.8.2.
Could anyone please tell me why this problem is occuring and how I can fix it?
    Thanks in anticipation.

    Thanks for your help.
I have a 24" i-Mac (bought new in 2009), do your comments still apply?'
What do you think could have caused the card to develop this fault? (Currently only internmittent, but it presumably will get worse)?
I will back up my files and go and see my local Apple Store as you suggested, but do you have any idea how much replacing the graphics card on my 24" machine would cost??

  • 16x9 anamorphic clip plays back with vertical lines

I have a clip that is 869x480 anamorphic, square aspect ratio, DV/DVCPRO. Turned off all attributes also.
I put it in a sequence that is NTSC DV 3:2 anamorphic, DV/DVCPRO 16x9. But when I play it back it shifts everything to the left and there are vertical lines along the right side. Lots of them. When I stop playback it looks fine.
    What is wrong?

I got the 869x480 from the boards here. Actually, I
changed it to 854x480 after reading a couple more
    posts.
The delivery for this video is a quicktime
posted on the web. So I want it as an anmorphic
shape with no letterboxing, like apple's trailers are
    formatted.
First off, anamorphic isn't a shape. You can make an anamorphic square or circle, and nobody can stop you. "Anamorphic" as we use it here refers to squeezing an image horizontally so it fits on the delivery format, then unsqueezing it for display.
The same concept applies to the truly anamporphic lenses used in Cinemascope production and projection, and to the squeezing of pixel rations to get a 16:9 or other wide shape into a 4:3 transport and delivery package.
Second, if your delivery is a QT video for the web, listening selectively to numbers thrown around about DV anamporphic isn't going to do you any good.
There is nothing anamorphic about your project. You have no need for it, and I think it's biting you. You have square pixels going in, and the desired end user has a square-pixel monitor. Anamorphia will only mess it up.
The sequence right now is at 720x480 anamorphic and
it is all rendered. But for exporting I use QT
Conversion at a custom frame size of 854x480. To get
the rectangular shape, and not a letterboxed video in
a 4x3 frame. Again, a solution I got from the boards.
OK, so you are resizing, anamprphizing, and recompressing on the way in to your sequence. Then you are resizing, re-anamorphizing, and recompressing on the way out of your sequence.
There is no place for DV in this equation, either.
Decide for sure and for final on your output size (question: will your viewers really have an 854p wide space to see it?)
Make your sequence match that resolution exactly. You don't need preset sequence settings, you need to make your own. Make sure your sequence is square-pixel.
Working farther backwards, make sure your source material matches the sequence exactly. 854x480, or something else if you decide everybody doesn't have 1024 or bigger monitors.
I would bet that, if you do this and take all the unnecessary resizing out of the system, your images will look awesome.
One more little thing: it looks like there is some scanned content with halftones in it. These could be causing some trouble, but you won't really know that until you take out the really obvious problems.
    Good luck!

  • My screen on my mac has become loose and goes all glitchy with vertical lines

My screen on my mac has become loose and goes all glitchy with the whole screen covered in vertical lines, it also has a lump at the base of the screen when it closes but that can be pushed down, All can be fixed by placing the screen carefully but it is increasingly difficult - HELP

Bring it into an Apple store genius bar for a free evaluation.  If your MBP is not under warranty, you will br told what the costs are which you can accept or decline.  Look at iFixit.com or Powerbookmedic.com for do it yourself options.

  • I can't restore my iPod touch. It is now frozen with a white screen with vertical lines and I cannot restart it.

While trying to update my iPod touch OS, an error was encountered and iTunes suggested restoring my iPod. The restoration failed and my iPod's screen is a white with tiny grey vertical lines. I have not been able to restart the iPod. Sleep/Wake didn't do it, nor did pressing Sleep/Wake and home simultaneously go it. Any ideas?

    - Let the battery fully drain. After charging for an hour try a reset:
Reset iPod touch:  Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - The connect to computer and restore if necessary and if yu cn.

  • White screen with vertical lines when opening.

My laptop has recently started showing a white screen with different colored vertical lines across it when opening the lid. It doesn't happen all the time but often enough to be concerning. If you close the lid and open again 95% of the time everything is good - with another try or two we can always get it back. There aren't any flickers or anything like that while using it. It sounds to me like a potential connection or short in the wiring. Am I on the right track? Thanks Donny

  • Display with vertical lines

I have vertical lines on my screen. Tried hard reset but no success.

Hi. I recently updated to software vesion 2.0.2 and started to notice the vertical lines you describe. I had never noticed them before. I have spoken to Apple iPhone tech support and they say they have never heard of this issue. They have asked me to do a restore on the phone via iTunes to see if it is a software or hardware issue. If it still happens after restore they told me to go to Apple store to see about a possible replacement. I have tried the resore and so far I haven't noticed the lines but it is early days.
By the way I have noticed the lines appear randomly and sometimes when I receive an email and get the audible signal I can see them.
Let me know how you get on if you try to restore iPhone.
