Encoder error in idvd

When I process a 75 minute imovie project to be used on idvd, I get an error saying the project is too long and I need to adjust the encoder setting. What is the encoder setting?

IDVD has two encoder settings, best quality BQ and best performance BP.
BQ uses two-pass variable bit rate encoding and can encode up to two hours on a single layer DVD. BP uses a set bit-rate encoder, and can only put one hour of video on a single layer DVD.
Your preferences are set for this in your iDVD preferences. If you have it set to BP, but are trying to import a long movie from iMovie (over 1 hour) I'm guessing iDVD is trying to switch your settings to BQ so it can fit the 1hour+ movie.
What these should mean:
OK - Would mean to change the settings of the project to match the iDVD prefs and keep encoded assets
Update Project - would mean "NO" don't change the encoder settings of the project to match the iDVD prefs but instead delete the encoded assets that were presumably encoded at the wrong setting and now would have to be re-encoded (updated) to the new setting.
I agree this is confusing, because either way something gets updated, either the settings or the assets!
But since you are creating a new iDVD project, I don't understand what happening here......
My suggestion: delete the iDVD preference file "com.apple.idvd.plist" Before using the "create iDVD project" button in iMovie, open iDVD by itself and set the prefs to BQ. Then go back to iMovie and try again.

I've looked through this discussion group and cannot find the answer to my question. If it's there, please provide a link rather than taking your time to retype an answer.
I'm trying to use iDVD for really the first time. I created a movie in iMovie. I can watch it on the preview screen in iDVD but when I try to burn the movie and theme from iDVD, I get the following error message everytime. I've got lots of memory and disk space. The iDVD creation is simple, just the theme main menu plus the movie.
There was an error during rendering/encoding of the menus/slideshows. Burning process canceled.

Keep getting encoding errors !! What to use instead of iDVD ?

Have read many posts about encoding errors with iDVD. I get them now, no matter what movie file (.mov, mp4, etc.) is used. Tried to save as an image, TS folder, etc. and always get an encoding error. Could never get to burning. Wasted many hours.
Which alternate program is as effective and easy as iDVD ?

Short version:
Best Performance is for videos of up to 60 minutes
Best Quality is for videos of up to 120 minutes
Professional Quality is also for up to 120 minutes but even higher quality (and takes much longer)
That was for single-layer DVDs. Double these numbers for dual-layer DVDs.
Professional Quality: The Professional Quality option uses advanced two-pass technology to encode your video (The first pass determines which parts of the movie can be given greater compresson without quality loss and which parts can’t. The second pass then encodes those different parts accordingly) , resulting in the best quality of video possible on your burned DVD. You can select this option regardless of your project’s duration (up to 2 hours of video for a single-layer disc and 4 hours for a double-layer disc). Because Professional Quality encoding is time-consuming (requiring about twice as much time to encode a project as the High Quality option, for example) choose it only if you are not concerned about the time taken.
In both cases the maximum length includes titles, transitions and effects etc. Allow about 15 minutes for these.
You can use the amount of video in your project as a rough determination of which method to choose. If your project has an hour or less of video (for a single-layer disc), choose Best Performance. If it has between 1 and 2 hours of video (for a single-layer disc), choose High Quality. If you want the best possible encoding quality for projects that are up to 2 hours (for a single-layer disc), choose Professional Quality. This option takes about twice as long as the High Quality option, so select it only if time is not an issue for you.
Use the Capacity meter in the Project Info window (choose Project > Project Info) to determine how many minutes of video your project contains.
NOTE: With the Best Performance setting, you can turn background encoding off by choosing Advanced > “Encode in Background.” The checkmark is removed to show it’s no longer selected. Turning off background encoding can help performance if your system seems sluggish.
And whilst checking these settings in iDVD Preferences, make sure that the settings for NTSC/PAL and DV/DV Widescreen are also what you want.

Encoding error when burning mp4 videos to dvd-rw using idvd

hi all, i'm trying to burn mp4 videos on a blank dvd. i used the magicdvd option in idvd 08 but the error message of "encoding error" had appeared before it burned the videos to the dvd. could you please let me know if mp4 is not supported by idvd? i heard i must convert mp4 to mpeg-2 in order to watch it with regular dvd player, can i do that with mpeg streamclip? is mpeg-2 supported by idvd? thanks!

Yes, it's Disk Utility - just follow this procedure:
1. create the disk image in iDVD
2. double-click the resulting .img file to "mount" it. Next launch DVD Player to view your DVD .... if everything is fine, close DVD Player and eject the virtual disk.
3. Open Disk Utility and drag the disk image into the left hand pane, then hit burn.
Note: Set the burn speed to 2x or even 1x. Most burn errors are the result of high burn speeds. Also use only high quality DVD-R media (e.g. Verbatim)

IDVD encoding errors when attempting to burn slide show to DVD.

iDVD fails to burn disk and fails with encoding error. Have attempted to use best, good, and professional modes of encoding to no avail.

Welcome to Apple Discussions. I see you're a new member. Hope you're enjoying your new Mac Pro. What are you trying to burn to exactly? I use Verbatim Dvd-R with excellent results. If you are using a higher quality media like Verbatim, Maxell, or Taiyo Yuden but to no avail then I need to ask if you have first tried making a disc image from the file menu in iDvd and then playing back said image with apple's dvd player app (prior to burning to Dvd-R).
This approach helps us narrow down the issue so we can better assist you.

Like it says in the title...My iDvd will not burn a disc...there is an encoding error that comes up after the title screen.
Here is the process that I have been doing.
1. put in a blank disk and with the project already being done, i hit burn (not too hard).
2. iDvd then starts to encode the title.
3. After the title has been encoded, the burning stops and a message comes up saying "there was an error during encoding" and when ever I try to burn the same message keeps on coming up.
I am running version 7.0.4
any help would be extremely helpful

Try using this workflow:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image and launch DVD Player and play it. If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding was good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality. Always use top quality media: Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.
Then you can concentrate on the content if you can't create a disk image of the project.

Chapter markers causing iDVD encoding error

TIP:
I discovered that the text used for a chapter marker in FCE can cause the DVD encoding in iDVD to fail. I kept getting encoding errors at the end and tried multiple fixes without success.
The solution was to remove the apostrophe that was inserted into one of the chapter marker names. The encoding worked at the next attempt.
Moral of the story - change the text in iDVD and not in FCE (or at least be careful in FCE).

And I'd try creating a new user and see if that user can successfully burn the project. You will need to move the project and assets to a public folder.
Make sure you have 20GB free on your startup drive.

HT201404 iDVD encoding error!

I have followed advice from Apple support of ensuring iDVD is open & a new project created before sharing slideshow from iPhoto.
I was hopeful that the issue would be fixed as the encoding time reduced, however I still get the encoding error after about 2 hours.
Sharing iPhoto slideshows to iDVD & then burning has worked many times for me in the past.
Size is well under DVD capacity. Nothing unusual about the slideshow.

Just for info. You are aware about
• Limit of No: of photos in SlideShow function in iDVD (99 max per show) (you can have 99 shows too)
• that iDVD doesn't care about space as in GBs - but only in time = duration of movies/shows + menu
iDVD 08, 09 & 11 has three levels of qualities. (version 7.0.1, 7,0.4 & 7.1.1) and iDVD 6 has the two last ones
• Professional Quality
(movies + menus up to 120 min.) - BEST (but not always for short movies e.g. up to 45 minutes in total)
• Best Performances
(movies + menus less than 60 min.) - High quality on final DVD (Can be best for short movies)
• High Quality (in iDVD08 or 09) / Best Quality (in iDVD6)
(movies + menus up to 120 min.) - slightly lower quality than above
Menu can take 15 minutes or even more - I use a very simple one with no audio or animation like ”Brushed Metal” in old Themes.
About double on DL DVDs.

Idvd encoding error

I purchased ilife'11 in order to get idvd. And I'm having encoding errors when trying to burn dvds. After trying just about everything suggested, I noticed that when idvd is opened I do not have use of the rop down menu. Don't seem to be supported..unable to update.

So if You only say that something is wrong - How do You thing we'll be able to guess what ?
There are zillions of things that can go awry.
• What material was used - Video Codecs, photo and audio file formats ?
• Edited in what video editing program - iMovie (version), FinalCut (version) or Adobe Premiere ?
• How was it imported into iDVD ?
• Was there any Error Messages - What did it/they say ?
• Where in the process did it go wrong
• Brand of DVD used
• Type of DVD used
• Burn Speed - set to ?
and much much more need to be told - to set us up on track on where the culprit is.

IDVD audio encoding error

I currently have 10 different quicktime files that i've created by exporting 10 different iMovie projects.
I've created an iDvd project and dragged all 10 .dv files in. Everything works well in the preview. the total project is 3.6 out of the 4GB available.
the entire project is on an 250 GB external harddrive attached to a mac laptop (so having available space is not the problem, i have over 130 gigs free)
i press burn, and the encoding begins. everything's running smoothly for two hours, all the videos are encoded. once it reaches "Audio encoding" i come across an error. it recommends me to "Delete Encoded Assets" and try again.
Which i have, and it's still not working.
Something about the Track.
i've created dvd's before with this exact same hardware. I even just created one now, using just one of the quicktime files. For some reason, this big project just won't happen and i'm on the edge of reason here.
I'd appreciate any help.

Another tip for working around iDVD encoding errors: Use internal drive

I've had several projects that produced the encoding error while rendering the menus, I've also seen a number of tips in this discussion area, e.g., have 20 GB of free space, delete iDVD preferences, delete encoded assets, and make sure your chapter markers are not near a transition or end of a clip (good luck with that using iDVD to set your chapters). Neither of these tips alone allowed me to burn a disk image to disk, but I'm confident they contribute to a more stable iDVD performance overall.
In my case, the only way I've managed to make the projects to work is to copy the iMovie project over to my internal drive, create the iDVD project on the internal drive and to save the disk image to the internal drive.
If you're low on internal disk space, as I am, easy to move assets is another advantage of using iMovie 6 over iMovie 8, i.e., you can create the iMovie project on the external drive and then drag a temporary copy over to the internal drive, then you can launch iDVD from within iMovie 6 without the annoying step of exporting to the Media Browser. When you're done, delete the temporary movie to free up space for your next project. The iDVD projects can also be moved to a backup drive or deleted.

You'll always get better results on the startup volume / internal HD (as opposed to an ext. HD) provided you also have at least 20GB's of available HD space remaining. Anything less is often problematic at best.
My suggestion in this situation is to find a way to clear more HD space. You can clear video files already burned to DVD-R media, burn your iPhoto Library to DVD to clear more space , or even consider clearing languages you won't need on your system with an app like Monolingual. No problems will be created by removing unneeded language files (however it's highly recommend you avoid removing architectures on any intel mac).

IDVD video encode error when burning to DVD

I am trying to burn a new copy of a project I successfully burned to DVD 2 years ago. I have not changed the source material. After the menu renders and video encoding begins I immediately get an error message "video encoding error." There are no menu warnings. All video is successfully previewed. Nothing has changed from the previous burn. The project info box shows all video and audio properly encoded and present.
What gives?

The way from FCE or FCP has been the same for me for lot's of years since FinalCut 1.2.5 I think (was no Express or Pro then)
And QuickTime Conversion never worked for me - I guess You were lucky two years ago.

• Disable Screen and Energy saver

• Export out as a QuickTime .mov file
• Select with Mark - Chapter Mark
• Not as Self-Contained (not important but saves time and space)
• NO QUICKTIME CONVERSION (IMPORTANT)
This QT.mov file I import into iDVD from within iDVD.
Free space on Start-up hard disk
I set a minimum of 25GB (for Mac OS and iDVDs temp files)
Just double click on the Hard Disk icon (top right on DeskTop) and read on bottom part of this windows frame e.g,
( in English - 1 of 14 selected, 38.24 GB FREE)
Encoding
• I use Pro Quality encoding if material (video + menu) exceeds 40 minutes ! if less I use Best Performances
Brand and type of DVDs used
• I use Verbatim
• I use DVD-R
Burn speed set
• I set down this to x4 (or x1) - BEST IS NOT BEST at all only fastest and results in Maximum amount of BURN ERRORS !
iDVD BUG
• One can not go back to movie-project for any alterations and then go back to
the iDVD project. It will notice and ask You to either Up-date or Cancel. Neither
of them will work.
Medicine - Start a brand new iDVD project.
Use of Chapters
• I only use a to z and 0 to 9 in naming them. NO other symbol/letter !
• NO Chapter-mark at very beginning - iDVD NEEDS TO set this by it self
• No Chapter marks in or within two seconds from a transition
(Way around this last one - Export movie as QT full quality and NO Chapter marks
Import this into a new Movie-project and now You are free to set C-Ms where You want
them except at very beginning - still)
Material used to build movie
• video - I use streamingDV (or convert all other to this e.g. .mp4, .avi, .wmv etc)
• audio - I use .aiff 16-bit 48kHz or from Audio-CD (44.1kHz) - no .mp3 or direct from iTunes
• photos - I use .jpg - no .bmp etc
Trash iDVD pref. file and run Repair Permissions - and have a re-try.

May not be relevant, but I had the same problem with iDVD, where burned DVDs showed a green screen. It was cured by quitting Quicksilver and Quickeys as well as disabling sleep and screen-saving

I keep getting the error: "Menu Encoding Error... need to stop burning process" when I attempt to burn a DVD

Very frustrating... I'm trying to burn a DVD and I've done it about 100 times before. I've checked the mapping for errors and found none. When I attempt to burn a DVD, the error mentioned above appears after a few minutes. I've tried to update all software, restart the computer, and use other DVRs. Any adivice would be most helpful. To be able to help we need more exact information and that You try out every suggestion as precise as possibly.
First step is as always - separate encoding from burn-process - By Save as a DiskImage from File menu in iDVD (as suggested by Old Toad)
If problem persists in encoding part then
• iDVD got a corrupted pref file - very common problem
• Space on Start-Up (Mac OS) hard disk get's too low to be able to store the temp. files from iDVD and Mac OS (can not be stored elsewhere)
• Material feed into iDVD - can not be digested as strange video codecs and audio files in .mp3 .wma and other exotic formats.
iDVD pref file - to find out if this is the problem - Easiest and most secure way is to - Create a new User-account and log into this. Re-try iDVD - If it now works OK then the problem is very close to 100% in the pref file. Either do Your work in the new Account or go back and trash the old pref file.
Space on Start-Up HD - I never go under 25Gb to let iDVD and Mac OS run OK
Material - Here You need to supply specific information
• Video - from what Camera - in what codec - If You can open a video file in QuickTime-Player then here open Inspector and read Video format/Codec: nnnnnnnn, size and frame rate - and tell us
• Audio - All audio I use is in .aiff 16-bit 48kHz (as from my miniDV Camera or 44.1 kHz as from Audio-CDs all other is converted to this. iTunes is even more problematic. Here I collect all needed audio into a new PlayList and this I BURN out as a standard Audio-CD (.aiff) (never .mp3) and in my movie projects I use the files from this CD.

Burning To Disk Encoding Error

I keep getting encoding error message when burning to disk despite the fact that under Project Info all coding appears as "done". I created slideshow in Fotomagico. It has video in it but clips are .avi format. Anyone using Fotomagico to make DVD projects that can help?

i have a similar error on a MacMini 2010 Model with MacOSX 10.6.4.
I got a mediafile from a satellite-receiver. the format is in MPEG-TS. So i demuxed it with projectX, combined m2v, mp2 and ac2 with mplex together to an mpg-file with two audio-streams. After buying mpeg2-license for Quicktime7 at least quicktime is able to play the video. now i am also able to drop the file to iDVD and iDVD creates the dropzones out of if.
But when trying to burn the DVD, iDVD asks if it should overwrite the dvd+rw. Then it creates the menu. but when recoding the video it crashes with the error, while recoding the video?
where have i to search for the error?
why get the video recoded at all? it is in mpeg2 and dvd is also mpeg2?
how does iDVD get out 4,9GB of a video, which is have 2.9GB, when set to best qualitiy under project-information?
any ideas?

I created an iphoto slideshow and then shared it to idvd.
every time that i try and burn to a dvd it goes for about 4 to 5 hours and then gives me " there was an encoding error"
I checked the encoding settings and made sure to set it to just high quality but same issue occurs
Any ideas?

by - instead of press burn key - go up to File and down to
• Save as a DiskImage
• then burn this .img file with Disk Util tool
B. What did the Error Messages read ?
