Encoder speed and orientation on NI 9401 in cDAQ-9172

Hello, I've acquired a ni 9401 module for my cDAQ-9172 and it's now installed in slot five to connect a dual channel encoder. Channel A is connected to pin 14 and channel B to pin 17 and the encoder is powered by 5v dc.
I want to mesure the speed and if possible the orientation of rotation.
To do this I started with the VI in attach, that can count the total of pulses in the encoder.
My question is, how can I change the DAQmx Create Channel to Frequency, and the DAQmx Read to Counter Pulse Freq 1 Chan 1 Samp, to calculate the actual encoder speed and orientation?

Once again, thank you very much for the help.
I think I finally did it. The Vi is reading the speed witch I think is right, but there's some oscilation.
I've connected only the signal A from encoder to pin 14 on the NI-9401, and the pin 1 to ground. The signal B is not connected right now because I only have one NI-9401 on a cDAQ-9172, so only one counter.
The VI you just send me, is calculating the speed (frequency), witch I divid by 200 because those are the pulses per revolution of the encoder, but I can see a little of oscillation on the speed measured (see picture in attachment).
For now, my question is if is possible to improve the measurement, and how?

P.S. - Note that in the picture in attachment, the speed is the one measured by the VI you just send me. The encoder was running at 1524RPM witch are 25,4Hz. Since the speed in the graph is multiplied by 200 (the pulses per revolution of the encoder), this result in a measurement of 5080 witch is the average number by the graph.

    I'm trying to do a pulse counting by a 9401 module in a cDAQ-9172 system. I have three 9401 modules . One of them is working as a trigger (start-stop count) and the other two  (in slot 5 and 6) are for counting pulses from the 2 meters. It looks like a simple task but my problem is that I am counting always  3 to up to15 pulses less than my reference counter. everything points out to a task in my program is causing a delay. The question is where or what is causing such a wrong counting

    First for triggering with cdaq you must use the 9405 or 9406 (for analog triggering or 9401 for digital triggering) module in slot 5 and 6 - look in following link. Signals are routed with the chassis PFI Lines and only available at Slot 5 and 6.

  • IDVD 5 vs iDVD 6: multiprocessors, encoding speed and quality

    I complained in another thread that iDVD 6 was taking twice a long as iDVD 5 to encode DVDs. Most everyone who has upgraded from 5 reports slowdowns but the amount varies. To learn more I encoded the identical project (using iDVD 5 menus only) in both versions, both set to best quality. It contained 81 minutes of video, three menus 2 transitions and nothing else.
    Video Encoding:
    The most important thing I learned is that multiprocessor support has been reduced in iDVD 6. CPU usage during video encoding was:
    iDVD 5: 240-270%
    iDVD 6: 140-170%
    So, iDVD 6 seemingly will not recognize more than 2 processors. This would explain why dual G4 and G5 users would see a slow-down but perhaps not as great a slow-down as Quad users. I certainly hope Apple will restore more complete multiprocessor support in a future update.
    However - The final project in iDVD 6 ends up slightly larger than in iDVD 5. My son (a professional video editor) suggested that perhaps iDVD 6 is also encoding to a higher quality, accounting for some of the slowdown and larger size. Based on a purely subjective inspection of the same scenes (from close up) at full screen on a 23 inch monitor I think this is right. iDVD 6 encoding seems to leave fewer artifiacts, less pixillation and blurring and so on than iDVD 5. Depending on the source of your video and where you view your DVDs this difference may, or may not, be important (or even real, maybe I imagined it) and thus worth the extra time. For me, it's not worth the extra time so I'm going back to iDVD 5 for now.
    Menu Rendering:
    Neither version uses multiple processors for rendering menus so the time difference between the two wasn't as great and both only use 2 processors for encoding the video portion of menus, so there was only a small difference in time between the two version for this part of the project.
    Audio Encoding:
    The same is true for encoding audio - only 2 processors are used in either version so the time difference doesn't vary much here either.

    That may be true. My last project seemed to fill up a SL DVD, even though it was 1 hour 27 minutes long. Prior to QuickTime 7.1, it even overfilled an SL DVD:

  • Encoder Speed with NI 9215 module and cDAQ-9172

    I've a NI cDAQ-9172 with the NI9215 analog input module, and I want to estimate the speed with an optical encoder (OMRON E6A2-CW3C). My approach was, making a comparison with a point in the midle of the high of the signal, ie 4V, making this way a perfect square signal with 1of high. After that I use the Tone Measurements and the Timing and Transition Measurements modules to calculate the frequency of the wave form, and this way I'm able to calculate the RPM speed.
    The problem with this solution, is that even with the engine at a constant speed of 746RPM, measured with a stroboscope, Labview give me a high variable values between 730RPM to 760RPM, and I can't solve this problem because I really need an accurate measurement.
    Should I buy for example the NI 9401 module to make this measurement? If so, does any one knows how to build a VI to get the encoder speed?
    In attach I send the VI that I'm using to calculate the speed.

    Hi,
    The best way to measure a speed through a quadrature encoder is to use the counters that are inside the cDAQ chassis.
    With the 9172 chassis, you need a digital I/O module (9401) in order to access the counters.
    With the new generation of chassis (9178), you don't need the 9401 because you can connect your encoder signals to the BNC.

  • Encoder data and speed calculatio​n with PXI 4472B card

    Hi,
    I want to collected time, vibration, encoder and speed signal in one file. I am trying to develop NI by using PXI 4472B and LabView 8.6. Everything is okay but getting only one rpm for speed data. I want to collect continuous data for 15 sec (constant speed) and 15 sec (ramp up speed).
    q1. Would you please look into the VI and provide me some suggestions to get continuous speed and all data?
    q2. What is the best way (programming etc.) to collect constant speed (100 rpm) and ramp up speed (50-1000rpm) data in two files automatically from one test? Any help?!

    Thank you for your warm response. Here is the status:
    1. I already tried to use 'Analog Tacho processing' sub-pallette. See the attachment, but the RPM value is not the same/similar with the actual known RPM. However, 'Timing trans..' sub-pallette shows similar speed in terms of frequency to actual known RPM. Do frequency and speed profile value in NI should not be the same/very close? Encoder disk is of 60 pulse/rev and using laser TTL to get the pulses, signal input is into 4472B. Does it neet to extra processing to count the edges of rising?
    2. I prefer ASCII or TEXT. Experiment is for one ramp-up (50-1000rpm) and one steady (100 rpm) for 15 sec each. I will use this data in Matlab. I am looking for help in programming so that single experiment will divide into two separate files of ramp-up and steady speed. File will consists of time, vibration, encoder value (0,1...) and speed.

  • Premiere Pro CS5.5 encoding speed

    Hi,
    I noticed that the time for encoding a video in Premiere with GPU acceleration enabled doesn't change according to the shaders clock speed. The time is exactly the same with or without GPU overclocking, is this normal?
    Another question: the encoding speed is faster during the first 50% of the process, then decreases a bit. Is this related to some option in the program or it's normal?

    I've made an encoding test where we can see that GPU participates more actively in the first half of the encoding process and therefore I don't understand why you said "The GPU is not involved in encoding, that is a purely CPU matter". From 50% until the end of the process CPU takes the lead.

  • Encoding Speed with Media Encoder Issue?

    I have a 5 hour and 36 minute timeline in Premiere Pro CS5 which is composed of mixed assets- some at 29.97, some at 30 FPS, etc.  The timeline is exported to Media Encoder and set for Match Source Attributes Highest Quality  (Quality 5.0, VBR 2 pass, min 3.00, target 6.00, Max 7.00 MBPS).  NTSC 720 X 480 (0.9091), 29.97 FPS, PCM 48hz, 16 BIT stereo.  Format is MPEG2 DVD.
    Estimated file size is 18138 MB.  The file takes approximately 36 hours to encode.  Is this normal?

    Probably yes. Aside from the normal conversion with 2 pass VBR, which even under ideal conditions could require up to 3 times the duration of the footage (in your case this makes about 15 hours), you are causing additional operations to conform the frame rates on the Premiere level of things. Also, since this is handled as a Dynamic Link process, you may be a bit short on RAM, which may slow down things further. And then of course the usual with disk speed and file I/O etc.. So it more or less sounds normal, but you should not let the initial rough guesstimates discourage you. Many times these values will get much lower after a while of transcoding when the encoder has a much clearer picture and statistical data about how long it actualyl takes to encode so and so many frames...

  • What factors affect encoding speed the most?

    Hello everyone,
    I am actually quite happy with the encoding speed to DVD formats. I was under the impression that encoding was "real-time". Encoding a 1 hour long PAL 48kHz capture from VHS to DVD only took ~30m.
    I opened the task manager and noticed that both cores of my Athlon X2 5400 were running flat out during this process. Thus I take it encoding can utilise multiple cores.
    My questions are:
    If I upgrade to a Quad core CPU what performance increase would I see with the encoding example above? 15m?
    What influence does hyperthreading have -if any?
    Do you expect that PE8 will support nVidia CUDA at some stage? I notice that the latest Roxio software does.
    Will the encoding slow down dramatically when I start working with HD content?
    Do any of the Matrox hardware encoders work with PE8? They only seem to support Premiere CS4
    I have SATA-II RAID 0, 2GB RAM, AMD Athlon X2 5400+ and XP SP3

    Export and Rendering speed can also be affected by one's I/O sub-system, i.e. your HDD's (Hard Disk Drives), their speed, amount of free space, the controller type and how you have these HDD's allocated.
    With the exception of AVCHD, which Steve mentions, having separate physical HDD's (not partitions - logical drives), will speed things up greatly, as all operations on the computer, access to the OS, the program, the media files and then outputting from the program, will be spread over several HDD's. If you only have one physical HDD, everything has to flow through one "pipeline," and this adds significant time to the processes. Having partitions will slow things down even more, and can even cause hangs, because the OS "thinks" that it has multiple HDD's to use, but only has one. It cannot understand what's taking so long, and grows impatient.
    With AVCHD, the CPU is used much more than even the I/O sub-system, and becomes the most important link in the chain.
    Good luck, and let us know all about your HDD's, their number, size, speed, controller type, say SATA II, and how you have these allocated.

  • Very Slow Encoding Speeds Ripping CD's & DVD's

    I have recently purchased a new Mac mini and I have noticed that encoding speeds when I am using iTunes - Lame & Handbrake are incredibly slow.
    When I am ripping a CD with 256 VBR it is taking ten minutes per song!
    I have a 2 year old MacBook Pro Laptop and it takes generally 5-6 minutes for a whole CD
    Is anyone else experiencing the same issues or do I have a faulty drive?

    I would have to render a guess of around 100 degrees. and it didn't seem to affect the burn. I put each movey in the home player and bounced around the tracks, but I wasn't going to sit through 4+ hours of movie watching in one night. I just noticed you have the 17" model, maybe due to the tighter confines of the chassis there may be more heat in the area of your drive, but most CDs/DVDs are pretty resilient. I'm sure if you have a CD player in your car, you can attest that those things can get smoking hot in the right conditions. just be careful also, that if you have a fairly cool room, that you don't place a hot disc on cold surface, cause that could thermaly shock the disc, and render it useless. a couple of years ago we put an iron over a cd and then put it in the freezer. we had to completely defrost it to get all the fragments out. a cold table probably wouldn't shatter it, but it would warp the disc and there isn't anything you can do about that.

  • Encoding speed

    Hi there, Arch (x86_64) has been my home for a while now. Satisfied as I am, I regularly try out other distro's. I've just tried out Xubuntu 7.10 & was quite surprised when ripping a DVD with mencoder, it was almost 3x faster than Arch.
    Any idea how this could be so much quicker? I've made custom builds of mplayer, lame & xvidcore for Arch, resulting in absolutely no improvement. It'd be nice to get this performance where I'm more comfortable, after all, Arch kicks 455 at everything else.

    Both Arch & ubuntu use the same version of mplayer (0.9rc1), though Ubuntu splits mencoder into a separate package:

I only included it in the screenshot so you could see the issued command & that they were the same.   • Wifi speed and the new Apple TV concerns

    One of the great things about my classic ATV is that I can start downloading a movie before dinner, and know that my viewing experience later won't be subject to variances in the wifi speed. In my experience, wifi speed and reliability can vary widely - and my worst nightmare is a video that stutters or freezes.
    I new the new box has the faster modern chip, but I'm concerned Apple has no control over what might be the weak link: the wifi connection.
    Is it time to make a run on a couple of classic boxes? Are they still in stock anywhere?

    The problem is that all services are bundled with your Apple ID ([email protected]):
    Your iCloud account (Mail, Contacts, Calendars, Reminders, Notes, Backups, etc.),
    also iTunes & App Store purchases (Music, Movies, TV Shows, etc.),
    and the iTunes Match services.
    (I guess that all your devices - yours and your wife's are connected to one iTunes library, right?)
    If you want that your wife gets her own iCloud account for Mail, Contacts, Calendars, etc. but gets also access to your media then you have two set up two things on her device:
    iCloud (Settings > iCloud) with her account (e.g. [email protected])
    and
    iTunes & App Stores (Settings > iTunes & App Stores) with your account (e.g. [email protected]).
    In this case she gets access to your library and could use the same iTunes Match account.

  • How to decoding and encoding PNG and GIF images?

    I could decode and encode JPEG images using following create functions which are in com.sun.image.codec.jpeg package.
    JPEGImageDecoder decoder = JPEGCodec          .createJPEGDecoder(inputStream);
    JPEGImageEncoder encoder = JPEGCodec                    .createJPEGEncoder(outputStream);
    But I dont know required package and functions to decode and encode PNG and GIF images. Please help me.

    Is the API that hard to follow?

    ImageIO.write( image, format (e.g. PNG, GIF(1), JPEG), file/stream what have you)
    1) Not sure if Java supports GIF saving, it might if you install JAI, or Java 6.

  • Questions and answers on DLM, sync speed and real ...

    I was confused about some DML details and posted on a BE forum (https://avatar.bethere.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=43542) and got what was to me an incredibly helpful response from Tom (drsox).  I thought it would be of interest to some readers here so copy it below.  Once again, many thanks Tom.
    1) FTTC DLM applies only between the cabinet and the modem? 
    >> Yes, as there isn't any broadband / data signal going anywhere further down the line to the exchange if you are on FTTC! 
    2) What are the different parameters that apply on this hop? I know there is a current sync speed, a current snr, a target snr and an ip profile. Anything else? 
    >> The IP profile isn't really related to DLM, it just "follows" your sync rate. In the past the IP profile would take up to 3 days to "follow upwards", leaving you with a high sync and awful speeds! This has been changed now on 21cn and "RE-ppp"ing (rebooting the router) would force the IP Profile to update instantly. 
    DLM changes the SNR target. So where BE have hard coded / set SNR targets such as 3db, 6db, 9db, 12db etc.. They only change upon user request. BT use their DLM system where line instability or line error counts are collected and analysed, the SNR target and interleaving settings are then modified in increments to try and stabilise the line. 
    This image shows quite well how, over a 6 day period, BTs DLM noticed that my line fault was fixed. I didn't get the full speed back for a week. 
    3) Is the ip profile the same as the BRAS profile? 
    >>Yes 
    4) The DLM keeps statistics of errors etc to dynamically change the ip profile? 
    >> Changes the SNR target and interleaving for the line which will reduce the speed, and therefor the IP profile. 
    5) There is a general theory that the DLM is incapable of telling the difference between an error and a modem power cycle, so that power cycling can cause your profile to lower. Is that correct? 
    >> Yes, if you resync / power cycle your router multiple times in a day it is likely to try and "combat the line errors" and reduce your sync rate by increasing the SNR and / or interleaving on the line. 
    6) Can other connections and disconnections have the same effect? For example, if I reboot the router (where this is separate from the modem)? Or use the router interface to disconnect/reconnect the broadband? 
    >> PPP drops (router reboots while leaving the BT Openreach VDSL modem on and connected) won't affect DLM. The IP profile will match your sync rate upon reconnection of the PPP session. 
    7) If you have a low ip profile, does this mean that the sync is limited to the ip profile? 
    >> Other way around, if you have a low sync rate then the IP profile will match the sync rate. If you get an awful sync rate and the IP profile follows downwards, then you resync higher but the router "keeps the PPP session open" (which is possible if you resync quick enough) then your IP profile will stay low, even though the sync is high. Until you reboot your router or disconnect and reconnect the PPP session. 
    8) Can the sync rate change dynamically without a reconnection? If the ip profile gradually rises, will the cabinet force a resync to make sure the customer is actually getting the benefit of the higher ip profile, or must the user intervene with a modem resync? 
    >> See above - Sync can rise without affecting the IP Profile and the cabinet does not force a RE-PPP. 
    8) As I understand it, if the ip profile gets stupidly low for some reason, it can only be reset by BT wholesale? This will only be done after a visit to your home and a telephone call from the engineer to the BT wholesale central admin? 
    >> Mixed reports plus I don't think people understand the difference between sync speeds, line faults, the delay in DLM increasing sync after a fault.. I expect half the reports on the BT forum are not related to a stuck BRAS / IP profile. It is possible for the ISP or a BT engineer to reset the IP profile and possibly DLM training. 
    9) (8) This applies to all ISPs using BT Wholesale: some may be more willing to force this process to happen on behalf of their customers, but none can cirumvent it? 
    >> GEA providers (I believe) still have DLM but don't have BRAS / IP profiles unless they implement their own. 
    10) Who sets the snr? As I understand it, the customer has no direct control. Is this different for different ISPs? 
    >> Mixed information again, I believe that BT Wholesale give providers DLM override controls and SNR settings but none? (or few) ISPs use this system. 
    11) Real download/upload speeds are physically limited by the sync rate. They are also naturally limited by local limitations (such as wireless connections), server limitations, and congestion at various points along the route? Any more? The congestion along the route will vary bewteen ISPs as they use different routes with different capabilitues. 
    >> It is possible for BTs regional or local cabinet network to become congested. Supposedly the minimum speed you should achieve over the BT part of the network is 15mbps. ISPs such as Plusnet, BT etc.. then layer their own "discriminatory" traffic management on top of that (ie, slow down torrents etc.). 
    12) Real speeds are 'unnaturally' limited by throttling. This will also vary from ISP to ISP. Sky claims to have none, and BT none except for p2p. PlusNet and John Lewis have significant (but well explained)throttling. All the more expensive operators have none. 
    >> What you said  
    13) The ip profile affects the sync rate, and therefore actual speeds. Does the ip profile effect actual speeds in any other way? 
    >> Not quite right. The IP profile directly affects the speeds you can achieve but the sync rate affects the IP profile. The sync rate is determined by the stability and quality of your line and what DLM thinks it can cope with. 
    14) Many people (including AndrueC above) report real speeds from speedtests that are consistent and not close to the ip profile. These can't be explained by congestion (that would make them inconsistent). They can't be explained by server limitations, as they are consistent accross servers and the same servers give better speeds to other people. They can't be explained by local limitations, too many people claim sudden drops where the local conditions have not changed. They should not be able to be explained by throttling, as they as seen for many ISPs who do not throttle (I don't hold with the ISP lying theory here). What other factors are there that can explain these cases? 
    >> AndrueC and some other Sky customers have strange symptoms where speeds are around 20mbps rather than the full sync speed. The only logical explanation is either local cabinet congestion, contention between BT and the provider's network (not enough investment by the provider) or artificial traffic management on the providers side. It is also possible that the router that the customer has attached to their line is unsuitable for the higher speeds. For example an old ethernet router may only be able to cope with 20 or 30mbps! A friend of mine has a TP-Link ethernet router running Tomato on a BT 80mbps service but the TP-Link's CPU limitation causes his service to only perform at around 68mbps; he has a replacement router on order. (Obviously wifi will significantly reduce performance). 
    15) If you get a stupidly low ip profile, how long can you except it to take before it climbs to something more reasonable? (eg in my particular case, my profile is currently around 15Mb, and from BT service line tests should be around 58Mb). And the classic question, is it best to power cycle the modem (1) never, (2) occasionally (how often) or (3) never if at all possible? Mine did jump from 3.5Mb to 15Mb on one power cycle. Was that just coincidence? 
    >> My FTTC line took about 6 to 7 days to go from 40mbps to 80mbps after a line fault. It is possible that your 3.5mbps to 15mbps increase was the "re-ppp" affecting the BRAS profile and that your sync had slowly been increasing over time. 

    what a waste of money sending an engineer to "fix a fault" which does not exist.  Precisely.
    In my original BE post to which Tom so helpfully responded, I began:  It seems to me that DLM is an excellent concept with a highly flawed implementation, both technically and administratively.   I think that sending out an engineer to fix an obviously flawed profile is the main example of an adminastrative flaw.  I understand (I can't remember source, maybe Tom again) that they are sometimes relaxing the requirement for a visit before reset.
    Maybe the DLM system is too keen on stability vs speed.  This will keep complaints down from many people: most users won't notice speed too much as long as it is reasonable, but will be upset if their Skype calls and browsing are being interrupted too often.  
    However, it does lead to complaints from people who notice the drops after an incidence (as in your thread that has drawn lots of interest), or who only get 50 instead of 60.  The main technical flaw is that DLM can so easily be confused by drops from loss of power, too much modem recycling, etc, and then takes so long to recover.

    As long as the profiles are different (ex. HID vs AD2P) you will not have any issues. But say if you try to use 2 keyboards at once, it won't work. Or 2 headsets at once. Your scenario seems fine.

    When I try and open Microsoft Word 2011 documents on my  IMAC they start opening one after another at a rapid speed and I can't stop it. I reboot and same thing happens. The documents open in rapid succession on their own and don't stop until I force close or after maybe 100 or more open I start getting the following message for each document attemting to open "This document could not be registered. It will not be possible to create links from other documents to this document" and then in paretheses the name of the document. After I click okay another trys to open. Any suggestions?

    If you had multiple documents open and quit the app without closing all of the docs first, it will open them again when you launch the app. Open Word, and then close all the documents, you may be asked to save the document, if the document was already saved but you made changes to it before you quit the app, you may need to save the changes first, shorcut ( command and s keys). After you close all of the documents then quit the app and restart the computer. See if this works.
