EncoderServer (Not Responding) and ThumbnailServer (Not Responding)

When I open up iDVD '08 and start a new project, or contiue on an older one, iDVD gets very sluggish. When open up Activity Monitor to see if there is a problem, EncoderServer and ThumbnailServer are not responding. I go to my other Mac to see if there is the same problem, and there is not. I do not know what is wrong, but if someone has the same problem, or if someone knows how to fix this please reply. I need help!
-Thanks

Well, it sounds like we're going to have to go a bit further. You should re-install iDVD '08. I don't know how this will affect your current project. My guess is that you'll be able to open it and make some adjustments.
I read here recently that someone implied they could just run the (Custom) installer for iDVD '08 and it would re-install. That's news to me. This is more like what I would expect is needed:

Another person said all they did was go to HD/Library/Receipts/ and remove iDVD.pkg and then Custom install iDVD.

  • EncoderServer and ThumbnailServer not responding

When I start iDVD, EncoderServer and ThumbnailServer show as not responding in Activity Monitor.
If I click on any iDVD menu choice, then iDVD stops responding.
I've tried creating a new user... that didn't work.
I've tried deleting the themes, which just get recreated when iDVD starts.
I've tried deleting idvd plist file.
I've tried deleting the cache file[s].
These seem to be most of the recommended steps to get iDVD working again, but none of them have gotten iDVD up and running again. Yes, I have used it successfully in the past.
Oh, yes... did try repair permissions too... nada.

Are you able to reboot into hardware test mode while holding down the D key?
    Yup.
Whatever key works, run the Extended Hardware test and post those results here please.
I did that and no problems were found, but I didn't have a Disc in the CD/DVD Drive plus it never asked me to insert one either. Should I at least insert a CD & re-run the Hardware Test?
Also check your crash log w/in system profiler > Software > Logs .....anything here regarding the S-drive?
Absolutely nothing else was in ANY other logs. Only the DiscRecording.log! The weirdest thing is, I was Erasing a CD-RW with DU and then used iTunes to burn a Playlist. Then I would copy the CD-RW to a new folder and repeat this DU Erase & iTunes Burn then Copy. I repeated this 3 times until I got to "The Wall" Playlist but it would not fix on the CD-RW, so I grab a No-Name DVD-RW & Erased it with DU without any problems. Then iTunes Failed to burn to that DVD-RW, so I when back to the CD-RW and burned most of "The Wall" & Erased & burned the rest of "The Wall". By then, it's 2:00 AM, so I went to bed.
After work the next day, I decided to play COD2 but *IT WOULD NOT MOUNT* the COD2 DVD. Now ONLY CD's will mount & Read/Write!
This is so bizarre I'm LAUGHING my butt off.

  • EncoderServer and Thumbnail not responding

I just opened up my iDVD for the first time (bought computer in March). Software update asked if I wanted to update things... I did. Now my computer is getting super hot and loud. When I bring up activity monitor it shows EncoderServer and Thumbnail(something) not responding. It stops when I close iDVD.
Can I still successfully use iDVD? How do I fix this problem?
On a sidenote... since the updates I'm getting mds and mdworker taking up lots of CPU also (when nothing is open). What's going on?

    Here's what I'd do...
Go to your project's info/settings and change the encoding setting from Best Performance to Professional Quality. Best Performance is a con basically. It encodes your video in the background to a very low standard and this fools you into thinking you're getting better performance... but it's at a huge cost. When finalising your project, save it as a disk image instead of direct burning (not recommended if your project requires a Double Layer DVD). Later you can use Disk Utility to burn the image. You can give the image file to anyone else with a Mac and they can produce their own copies without needing iDVD or other DVD duplication method.
Your Spotlight (md = metadata) index may be corrupt. Go to the Privacy tab of the Spotlight pane in System Preferences and drag in your HD icon. This should delete your Spotlight index. I tend to close System Preferences to ensure that takes effect. Now go back again and remove your HD from the Privacy listing. This will allow Spotlight to set up a new index. This will take some time so only do this when you dont mind the re-indexing process. It should finish and mds and mdworker should leave you alone.

  • EncoderServer and Thumbnail server not responding

I have a new MacBook Pro (Intel Core Duo) that I've had for about a month that has the iLife '08 suite.
My problem is that when I run the iDVD program the EncoderServer and Thumbnail server are not responding. iDVD is not operating slow or any other problems as I've read others are having problems with.
When I go to 'burn DVD' all goes well until it comes time to burn the DVD. Now, the actual DVD is a double later at best quality and I am not trying to multitask when it trying to burn. (I have heard that when you use best quality you can't multitask with iDVD)
I have repaired my permissions, no soap. And since iDVD came preinstalled I have not tried uninstallingreinsalling and the truth is, according to the other article in this forum, by the same title, that would not do any good anyway.
I am a computer professional, but fairly new to the Mac world.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Sue, tx for a quick post-
I don't get as far as burning- an 'unknown error' during encoding occurs. The only identifiable bug is the freezing of two processes that start with iDVD (they DIDN'T two weeks ago) the abovenamed serverzz.
    Also- Apple says,
"You should always burn double-layer discs directly from iDVD and not from a disc image. Double-layer discs burned from a disc image may cause playback issues in some DVD players, such as freezing during playback." This pops up when trying to do an img save with DualLayer, and appears in the online advice.
So I'm trying with all non-Apple 'extensions off' (forced quit thru Act Monitor) even tho the only change is the latest Appl updates.
It just QUIT! Right before switching to encode video! Two hours of menu/slideshow encode and it doesn't save any!!

  • ILife v2008 & idvd 7 transferring imovie 5.0.2 into idvd7

has anybody had this problem. i create a project in idvd7. i put my imovies into my movie folder. i have 6 movies from a vacation. when i open idvd7 i pick my theme. then when i go and get my imovies for my project out of the 6 movies for some reason one of the movies looks like a quicktime movie! all my other movies i can drop into the idvd7 project with no problem. but the one movie that shows its a quicktime (how and why it says quicktime is a mystery when i did all the movies the same) it locks up my idvd7. i can still use my computer for other things, but idvd7 locks up and its either encoding or ??? so, i tried to save my one movie again to see make sure it wasn't a quicktime project and then its not in my movie folder when it is in the folder. this is driving me insane. what could be the problem? any help would really be appreciated.

    Hi,
Thank you for the feedback. The hard disk has about 230 gigs of free space.
Just completed the install and the 7.0.1 update. I am still showing that the ThumbnailServer is not responding. The application seems to be running though.
Ok, now its not. Here is what I did:
    Started iDVD
    Created a blank project
Dragged a iMovie clip to the first box
Dragged a FCE clip to the movie box
    Autofilled drop box
    Autofilled drop box (sub menu)
Selected "+" and add another movie clip
Up to this point, everything seems to be ok except the ThumbnailServer is not responding.
Next, I dragged another FCE clip to the new empty movie box.
At this point, iDVD stops responding (though the activity monitor says the application is ok). CPU percentage fluctuates from 13 to 30 percent. ThumbnailServer is not responding. EncoderServer went red and is not responding. Interestingly, when iDVD has the focus, the iDVD menu bar does not appear as it stays at the menu bar of the prior application, Safari this this case.
If I try to scroll in the clip mode, it takes several minutes before the screen redraws.
Interestingly, when I clicked the red close window button, iDVD responded and closed iDVD.
Ok, I think I've found something interesting with the clip I tried to drag to iDVD. When I attempted to open it with Quicktime, Quicktime reported that there were some assets that it could not find. I investigated and determined that they were some render files that had mysteriously disappeared. I went back and re-rendered the clips, exported to a quicktime file again and imported to iDVD. Voila, iDVD doesn't die.
So, it appears to me that iDVD gets stuck and doesn't report that it cannot open the asset.
I grabbed a clip from another source and created a disk image in iDVD. It appears to have encoded fine, even though the "EncoderServer" and "ThumbnailServer" are not responding. Hmmm.
So, perhaps I didn't need to do the reinstall after all. I hope I have not broken something else in Leopard (general iLife stuff and other "system" stuff it installs that is Tiger specific). There are definitely two bugs in iDVD. One regarding the loading of "missing assets" and the other regarding the "ThumbnailServer" and "EncoderServer" not responding errors.

  • IDVD 08 useless

iDVD on my Intel iMac (2.0 GHz, 2G Ram, 100G free hard disk) is totally useless under Leopard. It hangs for 20 minutes on the simplest things. If I select the (for want of a better term) 'outline view' it hangs. If I click on a button in the view to select a Scenes page, it hangs. If I click on the 'I' button to get info, it hangs. If I click on the scroller, it hangs. And when I mean 'hang', I mean the Spinning BeachBall of Death, the Activity Monitor shows iDVD using 100%+ of one core, a couple of the subprocesses (ThumbnailServer and EncoderServer) not responding, iDVD not responding, nothing.
To get here I imported an iMovie 06 movie that's 90 minutes long (a long slideshow with transitions between the slides) that's very large (16 GB on disk). That took a long time, but it was successful! Then I said "burn to a disk image" and it fails (after a LONG, LONG time) with errors on the menus. So I read posts here that said to remove the sounds on the menus, and I've been trying to do that all day. But I can't! iDVD just doesn't respond. I can't even click away and go to another app; if I click back on iDVD it (you guessed it!) hangs for minutes.
This is so frustrating! It worked much better under Tiger, at least then it didn't just go away and ponder it's navel for hours at a time. I feel like I'm running on an SE/30 or maybe even an original Fat Mac.
And then not to be able to create the disk image when under Tiger it worked is just icing on the cake. I am very disappointed.

Yup as expected, the burn failed. I trashed iDVD, installed from the disk, downloaded the iLife and iDVD updates, installed them, and the same thing happens. Simply clicking the scroll bar makes the app go to 100.3% of CPU and stop responding for minutes.
The burn fails with a lot of errors in the log (this has NOTHING to do with the complete non-responsiveness of iDVD):

  • Project Time Doubled

I was creating dvds in around 54 minutes. I then ran into the issue described in this thread and followed the solution (which worked btw thank you)
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5151193&
However now I find my idvd08 time for a similar sized project now takes me over 2 hours. My project sizes are similar - all under 1 hour. My encoding preference is still set to "performance" as I read that is the best for those under 60 minutes. I'm using im06 as well.
    Any ideas?
EDIT: I just realized that encoderserver and thumbnailserver are still not responding. Not sure what to do from here.

  • 24 hours to encode?

Started Burn DVD process with five .mov files to encode. File sizes of .mov files are 20.8 MB, 215.6 MB, 250.1 MB, 288 MB, 324.1 MB, 314 MB. Encoding: Professional Quality to Single-Layer 4.2 GB media. 35 MB menus, 4229 MB movies, Total: 124 min, 4.16 GB.
System Monitor shows: 7.9 GB free memory, CPU usage 48%, 870 GB disk free
iDVD child processes named "EncoderServer" and "ThumbnailServer" are listed as "(Not Responding)".
Time remaining: 24 hours 23 minutes. Why would this MacPro need 24 hours to create this DVD?

    Hi
    +Total: 124 min+
Single Layer DVD and iDVD any version - MAX 90 or 120 minutes (iDVD5 - 09)
The maximum is absolute and includes time for menu.
Other reasons for stupidly long encodingtimes
    • 5Gb free space or less on internal boot hard disk
Shoud be 25Gb free as minimum for standard 4x3 video and about 5 times more for 16x9 HD.
    Cure
    • Either use DL - DVDs if Your burner accept this
    • Shorten the duration of Your movies (Gbs OF NO interest at all ! )
    • Make a DiskImage and use Roxio Toast™ and Fit on one Disk function

  • Dual-Layer (DVD+R DL) burn hang with Sony DVD RW DW-Q28A

I have been trying unsuccessfully to burn an imovie project with idvd. Symptoms are some of those described in other topics:
    - idvd goes through all stages and hangs in burn
    - hang is always in the multiplexing phase
    - EncoderServer and ThumbnailServer also hang
    - all wait for a semaphore
I have seen the entries for upgrading the firmware on the Pioneer drive, but did not see anything similar for the Sony. I am using Fuji DVD+R DL disks.
    Any help is much appreciated

This problem has really not been resolved; I have worked around this problem by purchasing Toast, as iDVD has failed miserable on each attempt.

  • Quick Question (re:exporting from iMovie into iDVD)

    Hello everyone!
I just have a quick question for you all... (I want to see if this is normal - I'm on a deadline and this is kind of freaking me out)
So, we have a 20 minute or so video in iDVD. It plays fine, etc etc. The goal is to burn it to a DVD.
I used the "Export -> to iDVD" function in iMovie, which launched iDVD.
But here is the weird thing: nothing comes up in iDVD. It doesn't make a new file, doesn't give me anything... it is just open, waiting for me to create a new project to work with.
YET, if I look in the Activity Monitor, I do see that EncoderServer (using 123% CPU) and ThumbnailServer (both iDVD processes) are running.... but shouldn't iDVD have told me it is working or that it is dealing with data?
This is very un-"apple". I totally would have expected a progress bar of some sort in iDVD telling me it is working or something.... or is something wrong and I should try to export it in a different way?
(I guess the underlying question is: when you export from iMovie to iDVD, does iDVD normally give you any 'heads-up' that it is working? how long does it normally take to open the project in iDVD?)

    Hi Matt!
when you export from iMovie to iDVD, does iDVD normally give you any 'heads-up' that it is working? how long does it normally take to open the project in iDVD?)
    Yes, and it's instant.
What you should see is iDVD opening and asking you to create a new project, It will suggest naming it the same as the iMovie project.
There are reports that exporting from Imovie to iDVD can produce problems. What I do is save the iMovie project and close iMovie. Open iDVD, create the new DVD project, then go the File menu in iDVD, scroll down to Import, and in the side menu select Video. This open your Movie Folder, wherein resides your iMovie project. Select it and it imports into iDVD in a flash.
Remember: iMovie projects go in the Movies Folder, iDVD projects go in the Documents folder. Change that, and they get very confused and unhappy.

  • Help! Finder unable to open and dock not responding

    Hi there,
I'm running osx 10.4.11 on my mbp 2.16 ghz, 1gb 667MhZ Ram. my mac was set up for me so that the Hard drive was partitioned. However, the other day the 'boot drive' was almost full and was slowing down the computer really badly, limiting it's functionality (couldnt open itunes etc etc) so i tried to move files onto the other side of the drive to free up a bit of space and seem to have caused a complete nightmare.
not only can i not open finder at all...all the icons on the desk top have disappeared and the dock doesnt respond at all, except for safari and system preferences. spotlight isnt working either and i've tried to repair everything using disk utility function on the intstall disk...and guess what...thats not working either, it tells me there's nothing to repair.
i really dont want to have to 're-format' the whole computer and am aware that I've probably moved a key thing to the wrong part of the computer. is there anyway i can fix this? am i able to access the computer without the need of an icon (a kind of ctrl/alt/delete function that you might use for a task manager on a pc?)
    any ideas?
    HEEELLLPPP!

I think, as you've suspected, you moved critical items from the System, out of their necessary location. Unless you have another Mac, with firewire, you are probably going to have to reinstall the OS. This is not a reformat, just an install of the OS. I think it will be a lot easier than accessing that Mac with another Mac in Target Disk mode, then trying to find out which system files were moved.

  • PCI DIO 32HS (6533) Suddenly giving "The device is not responding to the first IRQ level" error, and no longer functioning.

    Greetings NI folks,
I'm an oceanographer, and have an sidescan sonar data aquasition computer running Windows XP SP2, and NiDAQ 7.0 (Legacy). For several years, this machine has worked flawlessly, but today, I booted it up to test the system for an upcoming job, and I got some strange errors in our sonar program. I tranced the problem to our NI-6533 PCI-DIO-32HS card. I launched NI Automation Explorer to test that the card was responsive, and when I click the "test panel", I get an error: "The device is not responding to the first IRQ level." Continue (yes/no). If I click yes, I can test the digital i/o's, but nothing happens, and all the tests fail (nonresponsive). I tried moving the card to another PCI slot, tried forcing it to have a specific IRQ that was unused by anything else, and finally tried moving it to another computer that had never been used with the DIO card. I'm still getting the error, and the card is nonresponsive. I'm at the limit of my abilities, and would like to know if there's anything else I can do, or should we send the card back to NI for repair/diagnosis.
    Thanks.
