EncodeURL - uses semi-colon or question mark in path?
I am confused about the encodeURL method and how it formats urls when adding the session ID. It was my understanding that the sessionID is added as a path parameter, which means it becomes part of the query string following a "?" in the url, like so:
www.mydomain.com/servlet/CheckOut?jsessionid=567
However, the book I'm using (Java 2 Web Developer Certification Study Guide by Sybex), says that a semi-colon is used instead, like so:
www.mydomain.com/servlet/CheckOut;jsessionid=567
Which one is it? Or is this entirely server-dependent? Either way the next processing servlet needs to be able to access that ID using getPathInfo().

that begin with a question mark are no longer valid and just comes up with a
'Page Cannot Be Displayed' browser message. Anybody else experience this
problem? How do I get around it?

Multiple Artist, Genre... Separator (Semi-Colon) instead of Smart Playlists
In my opinion, one of the greatest features of ID3 tags is the ability to use semi-colons to differentiate between multiple artists, genres, albums, etc... for any given field. This feature has been available since ID3 tags for MP3's were first implemented over a decade ago.
With Windows Media Player 10, it's database was finally able to parse the information separated by semi-colons correctly. What this means is that if I have a song like "Picture" by Sheryl Crow and Kid Rock, in the ID3 tag, I type "Sheryl Crow; Kid Rock", and in WMP, if I click on Artist | Sheryl Crow, "Picture" appears. And if I click on Artist | Kid Rock, "Picture" appears. In fact, when I rip songs using WMP, it places semi-colons in numerous ID3 fields from the album description.
In iTunes, however, when I import a song with a semi-colon in an ID3 tag field, the database reads the artist as "Sheryl Crow; Kid Rock", or essentially, it treats "Sheryl Crow; Kid Rock" as a THIRD artist. The same is true if I have a song that I feel crosses two genres--like "Picture". In WMP, if I put in the Genre field "Pop; Country", when I choose Genres | Pop, "Picture" appears, and when I choose Genres | Country, "Picture" appears.
Does anyone know if a bug fix for this is in the works for iTunes? It seems Apple and iTunes have been trying to push Smart Playlists for this kind of organization, but that's the poor man's way of organizing songs and not nearly as efficient. I don't want to have to create Smart Playlist for all songs with "Sheryl Crow" in the artist field. It should be inherent based on the semi-colon.
Does anyone know if anything smarter than Smart Playlists is in the works that matches the intuitiveness of Windows Media Player's database?

BillWhereas in WMP & the ID3 spec. you would use a semi-colon to separate items you will find that iTunes & the Music store use a slash instead. However as you so rightly say iTunes takes the information and construes a new artist entity rather than two artists connected to the same track. (WMP might also respond to slash - I recall AC/DC always presenting issues so they exist as AC-DC in my library.)

Your system cannot find the startup volume. This can be caused by many things including a failed HD. Please look over and trouble shoot using the Apple Flashing question mark appears when you start your Mac letter. -

I think that you are working with a Source System Which is type of File System, right?
so that if your CSV file has its Data Seperator with a semi colon... it's ok.
you just have to configure one thing in your infoPackage (Which used to load data from the CSV file).
Double click on this infoPakage to open it.
Open the tab "External Data".
In the "File type" choose CSV file.
In the "Data Seperator" you just type ";".
That's all. Then you can load any CSV file with the Data Separator as semi colon.

I had this issue about a month in a half ago and it was fixed by a local technician. I no longer have access to him and I really need some help. The issues are as follows:
Safari will not open.
Firefox disappeared. No icon, just a question mark in it's place.
When I open mail it shows I have new messages but the content is blank.
Time Machine cannot turn on because sparse bundle is in use.
New files that were made are no longer available. It's almost as if the computer jumped back in time.
The Mac Mini is running Mavericks 10.9.5I'll assume that you have some way of connecting to this website from the affected machine. If not, ask for other instructions.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List

I'm using a macbook pro, running snow leopard. Yesterday I got around to emptying my trash for the first time in quite awhile and was surprised by how much there seemed to be in there. Immediately after a question mark symbol appeared on all my hard disk folders. If I click on these question marks I get a message saying ' the item can't be found'.

Not sure where these hard disk folders are located that you are referring to? Finder, Finder tool bar, Finder side bar, Desktop, Dock?
More then likely they are an alias that not longer point to the orginals, thus the question mark.
I would reboot. Delete icons if an alias and just recreate by dragging from the source. Try right click (control) click to remove. -

Where is your Calculator application located? Before you can put it into the Dock you need to remove the Question Mark. Select it with the mouse and drag it out of the until it "poofs" away. Now locate Calculator and drag its icon into the Dock.

I have replaced my ibook hard drive but when I start up I get a folder with a flashing question mark. I have tried installing the OSX disk using the "C" key but can't get any further than the flashing "?." What do I do? What is the problem?

Which version of the OS is installed, and which version are you trying to install?
You could try starting up with Startup Manager and see if it will allow you to select the OS X install disc as the startup disk. If so, maybe you can proceed from there. I would recommend repairing the hard drive first since you are evidently having a bit of a problem with it. -
I replaced the battery on my RAID card, when I booted my mac pro up, I get the folder with the question mark. I used a boot USB drive to boot and when I looked in the RAID utility, my RAID 5 volumes were no longer showing, advise.
ErnestNot sure if I'm following you. I have 4 hard drives installed on my Mac Pro. I had a RAID 5 configured and functional for about 5 months. My battery died on the RAID card. I replaced the battery, seated the RAID card back in the slot I removed it from. When I booted to the USB drive to look in the RAID utility, I could see the battery is charged but my volumes are not showing.
The drives don't show in disk Utility. I built the RAID with the RAID Utility and they did show there. I have a early 2008 Mac Pro, Mavricks OS running Mac Server -

im getting a folder with a question mark on startup after using boot camp. it shows up for a second, then the apple logo pops up and OSX boots normally. i wouldnt be concerned except this folder with the question mark usually shows up when the computer cant find the startup disk or OS. so in fact what is happening is that my macbook cant find the startup disk for a second and then seems to find it. is anybody else having this problem. i dont like it and want to get rid of it. help!!

I wonder how it can be that in the System Preferences - Startup Disk - OS X volume can become "deselected" like it was... I had to re-highlight the OS X volume and all is well.

Subtitle semi\colon question & subtitles take forever to remove from project
I have been having problems with two NTSC DVDs. The subtitles would line up perfectly in Subtitle Workshop put upon importing into Encore (CS3) they would lose sync after about 10 minutes or so. Turns out I was looking in the wrong area (at my MPEG files). On a whim I remembered reading somewhere about replacing the ":" in the subs with ";" and it worked fine!
But I don't know why it worked? I always thought only PAL subtitles needed to be in ";" ??
I went back to all of the subtitle files I did work with on prior projects and they had ":" as well? Those were NTSC how come they did'nt give me problems?
On a related note when I had to "remove subtitles" in CS3 it would take about 4-5 minutes before they cleared. It was faster to shut it down and re-open. Is it a CS3 thing? I know Encore 2 did not do that.You have it backwards.
NTSC subtitles must use the semi-colon (
;) delimiter because it's drop-frame. PAL timecode is not drop-frame so it always uses the colon (
:) delimiter.
I'm guessing you didn't see problems before because either the video wasn't long enough, or you weren't watching as carefully? Hard to say, but Encore (and other DVD authoring apps that support subtitles) has always behaved in this way.
I'm confused by your related note. You mean to delete a subtitle track takes 4-5 minutes? -
I use picasa for my photos..currently there is a question mark imposed over the icon on the dock and it won't open...what does this mean?
Thanks for any help.The icon in the dock is a shortcut to the app itself.....for some reason the icon has lost contact with the app.......go to your Applications folder and drag Picasa back to the dock....a new alias (shortcut) will be created.....

We switched to FIOS around in June 2008 with a DVR box on the main tv. This made my other tvs inoperable, although one was a new digital. We had been hooking up by just using coaxial cable and no boxes on these other tvs. When I called tech suppor
