Encoding and compression wish

I consider myself a pretty seasoned pro at creating many types of digital media, but I am not a specialist in any one area. I do illustration 2d and 3d, high-end 3d animation, simple editing and effects, photoshop work, illustrator work etc. and have been at this for many many years. I say this as a preamble because I am frankly flummoxed at having to decipher the best compression settings for creating a 720p clip that will look as good as possible, yet play back without stuttering on my clients' less than stellar hardware. Yes, I can try this and that and iteratively get to my goal, but the trial and error approach doesn't cut it under production deadlines. I am sure I am not alone judging from the many forums and questions I have found on the net.
I wish that I could have a different type of interface where I could could simply specify: this is my desired file format, this is my target resolution, this is my target playback device - having low, medium or high sophistication, then have three sliders that would affect one another setting my priorities between three conflicting variables: image quality, resolution and bandwidth. This interface might be in the form of a triangular space with a dot that could be moved to set these priorities, (the vertices of the triangle being the three conflicting variables). In this way it seems to me, in my own naive way that I could get the results I want so much more easily, and so could all those scads of confused people on the myriad forums I mentioned above.

Hello,
I usally export the project totally uncompressed and then I do the final encoding-compression in Adobe Media Encoder but the problem remains.
I have every preferance to "Best" and "High".
Yes, I get artifacts...
About the Gamma problems, where can I select a color profile? In Adbe Media Encoder?
Thank you!

  • What is the best way to encode and compress?

    I just finished an hour and a half long video of comedians performing. The client wants this to be put on dvd so he can mass produce it. What is the best way to compress this and encode it? Should I buy compressor or can I do it in handbrake? What are the best best settings to make sure it doesnt lose quality? Please advise...

    You should be able to get up to 2 hours at least.
    The best way is to export as a Master File and drop it into iDVD, Toast or some other DVD authoring app.

  • Encoding and compression in After Effects (Problems with some colors and some effects))

    Hello dear friends,
    I would like to export an openning title video for a movie, which is about 2,45 seconds long and 22 GB (Uncompressed)
    The footage is 1920X1080.
    There are a lot of effects, such as, alpha chanel clips of smoke, explossions and stuff like this.
    When I export it into H264, or Mpeg2,4 or avi or H264(blu ray), I get a bad quality encoding in some parts:
    I get bad quality in the glow effect I have attached to the titles.
    I get bad quality in the clips of smoke (bad color) (tha alpha chanel of the smoke)
    Would you hapen to know why only in some parts I get bad quality and not not in the whole footage?
    Is it maybe because I chose to export the project only in RGB and not in RGB+Alpha, since my project contains alpha chanel data?
    Even if I export the project using Quicktime Animation codec (which is lossless), I get this bad quality (a little better than the previous encodings of course).
    I only get a nice encoding when I export the project with Zero compression, but 22GB for a 2 and a half minute clip, is too much...
    If somebody has any suggestions, I would be interested....
    Thank you!!

  • Exporting to Media Encoder and file locating issue

    Ok, Now I've read a LOT of threads trying to find a solution to this but none of them have answered my problem exactly, so here's what I have:
    Running a New computer with a clean install of Windows 7 64 bit and Adobe CS4 Master Suite
    Hardware:
    Dell Precision M6400
    Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU  T9900 @ 3.06 Ghz, 3.07 Ghz
    12.0 GB Ram
    Premiere ran fine for a while, but soon I've run into a problem where I try to export to the Media Encoder and I keep getting the error:
    "Could not read from the source. Please check if it has moved or been deleted"  over and over
    I have deleted recently imported media one at a time to try and locate what's causing it since it wasn't doing this before, but no luck.  So I restarted the program but now the Premiere project won't open.  The task bar loads until about 2/3 in and stops there indefinitely, I've left and came back to it 2 hours later and it hadn't moved.  I back tracked and found a previous save that will open, but it still will not export, it still says "Could not read from the source. Please check if it has moved or been deleted".  And as soon as I update anything and save a new file that one will not open either.
    I've tried recompressing each video file into a format I know works well with Premiere but still no difference.
    This problem has plagued my workflow for a while now and I can't take it anymore.  I've had to restart clean project files to try to work around it but I lose so much progress, and the work around by rendering the premiere file through After effects hasn't worked either.  The error I get there says "Dynamic link server is busy".
    Here's what the problem is not:  It is not because I uninstalled CS3 or any other previous version, I've never had it on this computer.  It's not a plugin problem, I don't have any plugins on this install except for the default ones that Came with Adobe Master Suite for Premiere Pro.
    Someone please help me, this is ridiculous that I have had to trouble shoot the program this much.  Both CS4 and Windows 7 have been around for over a year now and neither are in Beta Editions

    Wow, sorry, forgive me if I've seen most forums work with a lot less, and your dismissiveness led me to assume you hadn't read my post.
    All of this is new and up do date as far as Adobe and Windows updates go, that's Version 4.2.1.
    My projects for this are all in NTSC Widescreen DV 24P, the particular sequence that I render from is in that format as well, although regardless of which one I use the problem keeps occurring.
    My renders for my recent purposes have been compressed in .h264, IPOD video Large.  The codec I'm rendering in also doesn't seem to matter, because I've tried this in .avi., .mov, .h264, .wav, etc. and all with various settings that I thought might help, but the encoder quits encoding 4 seconds in and gives me the error that it can't find the media.
    And I didn't mention the media type and what not because it seems irrelevent of what I use this problem keeps happening.  I'm pretty sure it's a problem with the project file or perhaps the media encoder or both.
    And I don't know what you mean by "disks"
    Do I have a Raid set up on my hard disk?  No, I have two 0.5 TB hard drives, Programs on one (C:\) Projects on the other (D:\).
    What address am I saving the scratch disks to?  I use the default of "same as Project".  Have I tried Clearing it?  Yes.
    I don't think I'm getting at what you're asking.
    And I don't think I've ever used an .xlsm (which is excel?) file and I've definitely never used a Power point project (PPS?) file in my projects.  And they open in their respective programs, although I'm not sure why you asked about that.  Again I'm not sure I know what you mean.
    The Premiere Project (.prproj) file is what I'm trying to open when the progress bar stops at 2/3 the way through and forces me to terminate the process with the task manager to close it.
    It would help to mention that all my projects are animated and I use premiere to cobble them together, so no problems that relate to transferring media from a camera to the computer would apply here.  Most of the files I get out of Maya are in Default .avi or .mov files, and I also use a handful of .wav files for the dialogue and .jpgs for cards and placeholders.
    I believe that this problem began when I updated a few of the files in my project, but I've been doing that for weeks without incident.  I've been updating them by saving over the old media file with the updated one of the same name, length, and type.
    I don't work exclusively with Premiere, in fact it's not what I usually use, that would be Final Cut Pro.

    Can anybody help me with this. Actually i need to study the performance of jpeg2000 compression using different setting of parameters.
    Thanks in advance.......

    Hi,
    I am able to encode and decode the image using J2Kwriter and J2Kreader classes. But now some other issue has came up.
    When compressed losslessly, the new jpeg2000 filesize is 415245 bytes. (My original file is of size 2000000 bytes)
    But when i am doing lossy compression, it results in following file sizes.
    Below 0.5 (encoding rate) - 535 bytes.
    Greater than or equal to 0.5 - 541 bytes.
    I tried with the following values of encoding rate - 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 0.8, 1, 1000, 100000000, 500000000.
    I m not able to understand why i am getting the same filesize even with different encoding rate.
    How should i set the encoding rate parameter to achieve my target compression ratio.
    Kindly guide me. I will be very thankful to you.

  • Converting and compressing mp4 video for iBook Author

    I'm working on an iBook on Propaganda in WW II and would like to include loads of videos.
    The Internet Archive has a great collection:
    Example: "Out of the Frying Pan Into the Firing Line (1942)"
    http://archive.org/details/OutOfTheFryingPanIntoTheFiringLine
    Most are in mp4 format.  I have tried bringing the mp4 into QT or iMovie and both seem to do about the same job of converting. Plus they increase file size by about 50%
    Primary question
    I'm targeting my iBook as a free resource for schools. File size is an issue for school iPads that might be 16 GB. Is there anyway to reduce file size, without losing quality? I saw some discussions about Compressor, but that seems to be designed for Final Cut Pro and I'm not a video expert.
    Secondary question:
    Is there any way to improve the quality of these old videos. Perhaps there are some settings I'm missing in QT or iMovie??
    I'm an instructional design guy - not a video guy. Your suggestions will be greatly appreciated ... especially in  laymen's terms.
    Thanks

    I'm keeping a "Working with IBA" collection at Scoop.it.
    http://www.scoop.it/t/publishing-with-ibooks-author
    I posted a link to this discussion ... and I received a comment (at Scoop.it) from Frank Lowney that's interesting. I don't have Pages, but I may get it try this out. (cheaper than Compressor!)
    Frank comments:
    "Strange but apparently true. I downloaded a 320x240 *.mp4 file from the Internet Archive and compressed it with the latest version of Handbrake using the iPhone/iPod touch preset. The result was 2.6 MB smaller that what I had downloaded. As predicted, iBooks Author rejected it suggesting I use QuickTime X Player. I did that using the iPod touch/iPhone 3GS preset but the result was a whopping 21.9 MB larger!
    Let's remember that the sole target of what iBooks Author outputs is iBooks on the iPad, nothing else.
    Next, I use Pages to create an *.epub file with the Handbrake encoded movie in it. Guess what? It plays just fine in iBooks!
    So something is fishy here."

  • CRASH COURSE NEEDED in Authoring, encoding and burning BlueRay...

    can, will my G5 running FCS1 Auther, encode and burn blueray with a Lacie 301115u Blu Ray D2 Usb2 Fw Burner?

    If you can live with the idea of working outside the +Final Cut Pro+ - +DVD Studio Pro+ environment, you might want to take a look at +Roxio Toast Titanium 9+. This (very affordable) software allows you to encode and burn on Blu-Ray DVDs, provided you meet the minimum system requirements (which shouldn't be a problem, since I could run Toast with my old G4 Quickslver).
    However, it seems the authoring possibilities are much more limited than with +DVD Studio Pro+. So if you're into very personalized and/or animated menus, than Toast probably won't be your cup of tea.
    I'm currently thinking about using Toast to burn a short film shot in HD on Blu-Ray DVDs. The only thing that got me pondering about this decision is the software's lack of advanced authoring capabilities. This is a family application after all, not a pro software! But its affordable price is more into my wallet's liking, so...
    Other than that, and as far as I understand, all you need to do to encode and burn BR DVDs with +Toast 9+ is to take your QuickTime HD (or DVCPRO HD, or else) movie and drop it into the application before choosing the regular options for burning: choosing one of the predesigned menu template, some menu options, the video format, the image size and compression level, etc.
    Most Blu-Ray authoring software I checked seems to function roughly the same way: drop in your QT-AVI-whatever-codec movie, select options and burn. The main difference between most softwares seems to be the level of control you have over the encoding and authoring possibilities...
    So maybe +Toast Titanium 9+ is worth a look, especially if you need your BR DVD ASAP.

    the problem i am having with this is once the rendering has finished and i wish to export it and do so via adobe encoder. there is where my problem begins. when i try to encode a 25min clip it says it will take 2+ hours to encode a 25min clip! why is this the case? all my fles and in the same project folder as the project even then it says it will take 2hours to encode a 25min clip on MEPG2 format.
    please help.

  • Base40 encode and decode

    Hi
    I'm looking to compress (and decompress) some already short strings (think about the same amount of text as a search engine might show for a result).
    One of the most effective ways of compressing short strings seems to be base 40 encoding as found in the accepted answer here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/7389252/shorten-an-already-short-string-in-java
    At least against my data, it seems to outperform LZF and Smaz.
    However, I can't for the life of me figure out how to decode it. I've even found encode and decode implementations in C, but my C is woefully inadequate to derive the Java: http://www.drdobbs.com/embedded-systems/slimming-strings-with-custom-base-40-pac/229400732
    To show willing, here's one of many attempts at writing a method to decode it:
         public String unpack(byte[] input) { //FIXME: No workie.
              ByteArrayInputStream bois = new ByteArrayInputStream(input);
              DataInputStream dis = new DataInputStream(bois);
              StringBuilder sb = new StringBuilder();
              char a,b,c;
              try {
                   while ((a = dis.readChar()) != '\0' && (b = dis.readChar()) != '\0' && (c = dis.readChar()) != '\0') {
                        sb.append(chars.charAt(a % 40));
                        sb.append(chars.charAt(b / 40 % 40));
                        sb.append(chars.charAt(c / 40 / 40));
              } catch (IOException e) {
                   throw new AssertionError(e);
              return sb.toString();
    Could anyone help me out? Thanks in advance.

    Welcome to the forum!
    >
    Could anyone help me out? Thanks in advance.
    >
    Thanks for posting the code that you tried.
    Problem #1 in your code is that you are not following the instructions from the author for decoding
    >
    Read each pair of bytes as a char ch. The first index is ch % 40, the second is ch / 40 % 40 and the last is ch / 40 / 40. Use chars to turn the index into a char. Note; I have swap the order in the code to make it simpler to decode. A 0 means you have reached the end.
    >
    You are reading three characters. Each pair of bytes represents THREE characters. You need to reach ONE character (one pair of bytes) and then break it up into three characters.
    Problem #2 is in the author's code. There is no '0' at the end. The author's code does not add a zero at the end to indicate the end of the string. The author's code also shows that some byte arrays are an odd number of characters long. That means you CANNOT read each pair as there may be a single remaining byte.
    Since you posted the code you were trying I was able to create code that works.
    I created a decode method and call it from the main method and print out the decoded results.
    import java.util.Arrays;
    import java.io.ByteArrayInputStream;
    import java.io.ByteArrayOutputStream;
    import java.io.DataInputStream;
    import java.io.DataOutputStream;
    import java.io.IOException;
    class Encoder {
        public static final int BASE = 40;
        StringBuilder chars = new StringBuilder(BASE);
        byte[] index = new byte[256];
        {     chars.append('\0');
          for (char ch = 'a'; ch <= 'z'; ch++) chars.append(ch);
          for (char ch = '0'; ch <= '9'; ch++) chars.append(ch);
          chars.append("-:.");
          Arrays.fill(index, (byte) -1);
          for (byte i = 0; i < chars.length(); i++)
            index[chars.charAt(i)] = i;
        public byte[] encode(String address) {
            try {
                ByteArrayOutputStream baos = new ByteArrayOutputStream();
                DataOutputStream dos = new DataOutputStream(baos);
                for (int i = 0; i < address.length(); i += 3) {

                            byte b = index[address.charAt(i)];
                            dos.writeByte(b);
                            break;
                        case 2:
                            char ch = (char) ((index[address.charAt(i+1)]) * 40 + index[address.charAt(i)]);
                            dos.writeChar(ch);
                            break;
                        case 3:
                            char ch2 = (char) ((index[address.charAt(i+2)] * 40 + index[address.charAt(i + 1)]) * 40 + index[address.charAt(i)]);
                            dos.writeChar(ch2);

    Hello All...
    Back after a brief absence, things look a little bit different.
    I'm trying to take a 16 minute mini dv video and compress it for use on the web. I'm interested in any suggestions you may have on settings for the video and audio tracks. I've tried using Sorenson 3 (15 frames, key frames set to automatic, 320 x 240) for video and IMA 4:1 (mono) for audio. The resulting video looked great but the file size came in at about 255 Mb.
    Thanks!

    Thank you for the replies.  Everyone was correct about the jack, interface, and phasing problems.  I have been unplugging my motu audio interface and then using headphones at work.  I have not changed any detailed audio output settings in logic.  When I read that the jack might be a problem I tried switching headphones.  This actually helped.  I am using dre-beats headphones and they seem to be having issues with the mac/jack-(the phasing/panning problems.  I can use these headphones with other devices but not the mac.  I have to use ipod ear buds and the phasing seems fixed.  Hopefully this information is helpful to someone else.
    If anyone knows how to correct this issue please let me know its difficult to know what my final mixes are going to sound like and I have had to keep bouncing everything into i-tunes- sync to ipod and then listen in my car radio.

  • RE: Cleaning and Compression Environment Repository

    Mark,
    I'm not sure what I did wrong the first time. I thought I
    covered all the bases, but just to be certain, I did the
    whole sequence again and now it works.
    Before, I did have problems restarting the environment,
    because the repository was locked. I had to kill a
    hanging process to solve the problem. Most likely
    it was this process that was interfering with my original
    attempts.
    With this script, you offered some very usefull infor-
    mation. Where did you get it? Like I said in my
    first posting, I couldn't find any documentation.
    The "help" function of "envedit" doesn't show any of
    the commands you used. No way, you stumbled
    on this by accident.

    The script mentioned is the exact sequence of commands that should be
    used.
    Did you shutdown the environment first? You cannot clean an environment
    repository while the environment is online. I know that these commands
    work for both NT and Unix environment managers.

  • HTTP Headers - enabling caching and compression with the portal?

    Has anyone configured their web server (IIS or Apache) or use a commercial product to flawlessly cache and compress all content generated by the portal?
    Compression and caching is critical for making our portal based applictions work for overseas users. It should be doable, just taking advantage of standard HTTP protocols, but implementing this a complex system like the portal is tricky, we seem to be generating different values in the HTTP Headers for the same types of files (such as CSS).
    We are running Apache so can't take advantage of the built in compression capabilities of the .net portal. We are running the java vervion. 6.1 mp1, sql server 2000 (portal, search, collab, publisher, studio, analytics, custom .net and java portlets on remote server).
    Basically our strategy is to compress all outgoing static and dynamic text content (html, CSS, javascript), and to cache all static files (CSS, javascript, images) for 6 months to a year depending on file type.
    Here are some links on the subjects of caching and compression that I have compiled:

    Hi Scott,
    Does Weblogic platform 8.1 supports netscape? We have developed a portal which
    works perfectly on IE but it dies in netscape. Is netUI tags not supported in
    Netscape?
    Pls reply

    From a pure HTML perspective Portal does it's rendering with nested

    Netscape 4.x and below have terrible performance with nested tables.
    The
    problem is not the Portal server but rather Netscape on the client machine.
    If IE and/or a recent version of Netscape/Mozilla is not possible then
    there are
    really only two options:
    1) Faster client hardware - not likely to be an acceptable solution.
    2) Minimize the number of portlets and the complexity within the portlets.
    Neither of these solutions are a great answer, but the 4.7 series of
    Netscape is
    getting pretty old. Having said that, we've got customers who want to
    continue
    to use IE 4 :)
    Again, though, this problem is, I'm afraid out of our hands. It is the
    client
    rendering time that is the issue.

    Does anyone know of any known reasons why the 7.0 (did it also with4.0) portal

    b/c it takes so long to load some of the webapps. What the pages willdo when
    loading is that the headers will come up and when it gets to the bodyof the page
    it seems to stall and then comes up all of a sudden. For some of thepages it
    takes 6 seconds and for others it takes about 24-27 seconds.
    We have suggested using IE only but that is not an option with allof the customers
    and getting a newer version of Netscape is also out of the question.
    Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.--
