Encoding artifacts in DVD-SP

I am ready to tear my hair out. I have been working on this project for over a year. I finished it once and sent it the owner of the company in Sweden, who sent it out to an outside firm to author the DVD. They added some titles that he wanted -- did it poorly, and completely screwed up the menu authoring. I told him that if he would spring for FCP, I would author the DVD the way we want it. I have been doing all of our proofing with iDVD for years. I have the menu working perfectly and looking just the way we want it, but the video is showing weird artifacts when the subject is an object turning at high speed. The artifacts are not there in the mini-DV tape, in FCP, in QT or when encoded by iDVD. I have set the encoding preferences to two-pass VBR and "best" but they're still there -- better but still there.
So for the experts, here are my questions.
Is there ANYTHING I can do to make DVD-SP encode like iDVD or in some other way that will not deliver these weird artifacts?
If not, and I have to encode outside DVD-SP, is there any way to make sure that when I re-import the track, my chapter links (about 80 of them) are maintained?
If I have to encode in Compressor, how should I set that up to get the output I'm looking for?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Jeff
Like i said before in the other post. If you let DVDSP do the encoding it uses QT's encoding engine which is a poor encoder - the same with iDVD. What is your field order setting? DV is bottom field first and this sounds like your problem.
What is your bitrate settings? Also its best to use AC3 audio and reserve same bandwidth for video.

When I add a quicktime asset directly to my DVD SP project it does not automatically encode to be DVD cmpliant. Says incompatible asset. Any ideas?

You use the term "QuickTime Asset" like it means something.  QuickTime is just a container ... a QuickTime file could be made from any number of codecs, many of which are not compatible with DVD Studio Pro.
What codec is the file you're trying to import?  Have you considered using Compressor to encode it to the proper format?

  • Encoding MPEG2-DVD from dpx image sequences produced random encoding artifacts

I'm using PPro CS 6. I've exported my 90 minute film as a DPX sequence. This image sequence is effectively my master. I then export this DPX sequence as a MPEG2-DVD and I get the following artifacts on random frames. It happens whether I'm exporting PAL (non interlaced) or NTSC (interlaced). I've now run the encoder three separate times and I get random artifacts on completely different frames. I'm checked the DPX images and they are fine so I know this problem is happening in the encoding.
    Thanks.

Here is another example. This time it I was encoding PAL from the DPX sequence.

  • Best way to encode from mini dvd's for FCP

My mom has a few mini DVD's that she wants me to edit for her. The DVD's are from the Sony DCR-DVD610. So my question is, what is the best way to bring the footage into FCP? Should I use Handbrake, or the MPEG Streamclip, or another program? Also, what settings should I use to encode them for use in FCP?

The "make dv" option in Streamclip works reasonably well for me.

  • Exporting through Adobe Media Encoder as MPEG2-DVD but quality is pixelated. Help!

So, I am exporting my project through media encoder - MPEG2-DVD, Quality 5, NTSC, 29.97 drop frame, Progressive, Standard 4:3, VBR 2 Pass, 7.4697, 7.4697, 8.0382, Frames 3 & 15. I have done this process many, many times. Today, I am getting this pixelated junk when I pull the exported file into Encore. It looks smooth in the window prior to export but then it comes out like this. I am using footage that I captured into Premiere Pro and animation created in After Effects. Can anyone help?

  • Artifacts In DVD

I have a I DVD (I DVD 6) project that i have burned to 2 different DVD's ( One Printable & 1 Non Printable- Both Verbatim DVD-R) and i keep getting Artifacts in the 5 same spots. I have checked the Original Mini DV tape and the I Movie project and the 5 areas in both are artifact free. I am working on a I Mac G5, have 30 GB of free space when burning and making a disk image and burning the disk with the Disk Utility tool. When i say Artifact i mean the picture will break up into little square boxes.
    Anybody have any ideas ????
    Thanks Steve

Well, at 1hr 45min you are getting close to the maximum compression that iDVD does. More compression=more artifacts.
i am doing a slow zoom out of the Bride & Groom (Very little motion) and get Artifacts
Keep in mind that the mpg-2 compression used works on the frame-to-frame differences - and the more the difference from frame-to-frame - the more artifacts are generated.
The othe cases it is lower light conditions (50 Watt light on the camera) and lots of party lights (Strobes and blue lights) and people dancing and waving
Low light usually means more electronic noise - which causes major frame-to-frame differences. Dancing and waving means lots of frame-to-frame differences as well.
I suggest you cut the content into 2 pieces, with neither piece being over the 60 minute limit of 'Best Performance'. 'Best Performance' will produce a DVD with the least compression you can get with iDVD.
i was wondering if something in the Mac was stating to go ??
I doubt it! Just remember, the better the original content quality, the better the finished DVD will be.

  • Encoding Video for DVD?

I want to make a DVD that will play in home players, though I do not need to make a menu using DVD SP. Is there a way to encode video straight from FCP into a file that will play in a DVD player?
    Thanks.

This is really a question for the DVDSP forum, but the sum of it is that you use Compressor to encode your video to MPEG2 and your audio to 2 channel Dolby, then import those two files into DVDSP as Assets and drop them into the Timeline in DVDSP.
That will be Track 1, so select the disc in the Outline and in the Inspector, and you should find a drop down menu to make Track 1 the First Play. That's basically it, but I usually do one or two other things.
One: If this is for a trade show, or even a client approval disc, I'll set the Jump To for Track 1 to be Track 1. That will cause it to loop until the user stops it.
Two: I'll create a simple menu with a single PLAY button in the center, and map that button to play Track 1. That way, if the client inadvertently drops out of the play loop and wants to get back into it, s/he can do it by hitting Menu on the remote and pressing Select.
More details on all of this are contained in your Fine Manual.

  • Encoding errors in dvd playback need help ASAP

I have a 80 minute program that i made in FCP. I've encoded it in compressor about 7-8 different times with various settings bit rates, job segmenting etc. primarily with 2 pass best 90 min and 120 min. I then burn them in DVDSP. the problem is some players are having issues reading the discs (Maxwell Verbatium) I used avg it rate of 5.5 with a max of 6.9 and as high as 7.2 It's an dance performance with movement.
Sometimes the issue is reading the disc other times is that the dvd will stop playing after about 10 mins or so. It starts freezing and there is the green digitizing. I've worked for a satt company that uses telco and it seems that the data is interrupted but the file size of the video averages 3.5 GB
Does anyone have ANY suggestions that may help in this playback issue. I've even burned the discs in different burners from two different computers.
    Bit rates?
    Region codes?
    CBR?
    Anything
    Thanks

    Hi:
I would stay with the 90 min standard preset and try changing the burning workflow.
DVDSP burns at max speed. You can try Creating Disc Image in DVDSP and burn it with Disk Utility or Toast and set a slower burn speed.

  • Best Compressor encoding setting for DVD

I have an 80 min FCP project. It is a stage show where part of the frame is dark and the stage is light with gels and the Dancers. What is the Best encoding setting for a standard size DVD
I tried 90 minute 2-past best DVD but there was severe blocking/chopping.
    Any tricks & tips?
    Thanks

I don’t understand that. (Me not so smart.) If there is a standardized Unicode value associated with glyph X, then how is it that none of the Unicode character sets in Firefox abide? Add a font? As I understand it, a font is just a re-representation of known characters. It seems like I’m hearing that not only does there have to be a character set decode of the data I’m viewing, but also a font that takes that Unicode value and translates it to something visual. That doesn’t wash. Between databases data is converted to and fro, irrespective of OS/App fonts installed. Sybase <-> Oracle doesn’t need a font installed. Viewing from SQL I don’t need a font installed.
But – thank you cor-el for effectively resolving my problem – even if I don’t understand the logic. Thank you for taking the time to reply!

  • Unable to encode to MPEG2-DVD

When attempting to dynamic link to Media Encoder, either directly from Premiere Pro, or importing prproj sequence directly into AME, only .aac audio settings land in the process queue, with option to encode video grayed out. Attempting to change encode settings in the AME process queue does not give options for MPEG2 DVD.
    Anyone experience this issue?
    Thanks!

I would advise skipping Dynamic Link for this and exporting directly from PP.

  • HD source encoding into SD DVD MPEG-2 format desaturates film

I am encoding a 720P HD source from FCP, the source is the Prores (HQ) format. I encode to MPEG-2 in Compressor. When I view the Standard def DVD the colors are really desaturated. There is no way to increase saturation in Compressor from what I can see. Any suggestions?
    Message was edited by: Miklos

This is almost certainly a gamma issue. This isn't specific to your HD source.
Very commonly this is an issue with monitor calibration and Final Cut Pro's "special" handling of gamma. Here is a really, really brief summary of what's going on.
So you have all of this video that was recorded with a Gamma of 2.2. Final Cut Pro opens this video, silently converts it to Gamma 1.8 for display purposes, and shows it to you. Why? Because Macintosh has had a default display Gamma of 1.8 since the Reagan administration or so. The original data doesn't change, but Final Cut magically adjusts the video it actually displays to Gamma 1.8, so it looks about right on your default-setting, default-brightness, default-everything Mac monitor.
But wait! You've got a monitor that is calibrated at a Gamma setting other than 1.8. You've either calibrated it yourself, or you've loaded a color profile (in System Preferences->Display) that isn't a Gamma 1.8 profile. Final Cut Pro is spitting out Gamma 1.8 video, but you're not seeing it. You're seeing something completely different.
But this is a Mac! We've got ColorSync! This shouldn't happen! Bzzt. Final Cut bypasses ColorSync when making this decision. See this url:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93794-fr
Note this very, very, very important quote:
Tip: While it is possible to recalibrate Apple displays via the Display Calibrator Assistant in Displays preferences, users should leave the gamma of their monitors to the 1.8 Standard Gamma setting when working in Final Cut Pro. ColorSync settings are not used by either Shake or Final Cut Pro for automatic color calibration or compensation of any kind.
I have an entire rant about this that we will save for another time.
So you're looking at what is for all intents and purposes, the "wrong" color. you go on and color correct your footage, or otherwise alter it, all the while making it look good on your monitor. Unfortunately, all of the changes you're making are being done so that the video you are SEEING looks good, but you're not seeing the ACTUAL video, you're seeing an "incorrectly" gamma-adjusted video. The minute that video leaves the Final Cut world on your system, and is displayed on a monitor with a "correct" Gamma of 2.2, you're going to see the "correct" video, which is going to look either too light or too dark, depending on your current display profile when you modified the video.
But you have no way of knowing this. So you use Compressor to make an MPEG-2 file, and Compressor dutifully takes the actual video data (the data that you're not seeing) and makes the MPEG file. You burn the DVD.
You put the DVD into your DVD player, and everything is either washed out or too dark.
So how do you resolve the issue?
    1. You must have a trusted video path out to trusted scopes out to a trusted, calibrated display device. Most obviously, this means SDI or HD-SDI out to a calibrated monitor. There are plenty of other options, but this is the standard.
    2. Trust the broadcast monitor, trust the scopes, and completely forget what you see in Final Cut Pro. It doesn't exist. It's imaginary. If Final Cut shows you a totally black image but you can see rainbows in the broadcast monitor, you're going to get rainbows when you go out to DVD.
    3. If you can't afford or don't have access to a monitor intended for grading, and you just need to do -something-, use a Spyder3 or other device to calibrate your computer's monitor with a target Gamma of 1.8. Your color space is still not going to match Rec 709 or 601 or so on, but you'll be in a ballpark that you can probably get away with for web video, personal/family stuff, etc. Never, ever do this for anything going out to broadcast television or any actual critical evaluation situation, but this will suffice for producing simple web content.
If you're making DVDs that are actually going to be on the market or outside of your friends and family, you -really- need to have a calibrated monitor that is capable of displaying the native color space of the output you desire.
On a more technical level, there is also a standing concern that there is a color space/matrix issue occuring when ProRes is decoded during the act of Compressor reading in the video data from Quicktime. We've seen evidence of this here, but we're still investigating.
In any event, it's late, and that's the very, very short and condensed version of my "What's broken about Gamma handling in Final Cut Studio" rant.

  • Encoding for SD DVD using H.264

    Hi everyone,
I'm wanting to output my JVC HDV 720p25 7 minute short film to dvd. I've already done a standard mpeg2 encoded DVD, but I'm wanting to try and see if I can get better results encoding to H.264 using compressor.
I know that there a presets with compressor with the HD DVD: H.264 presets abd the H.264 for DVD studio pro. With those presets compressor allows between 50 and 70 minutes of video on a DVD-5.
What I really want to know what settings should I use? Does anyone have a tried and tested bitrate method? I understand about mpeg2 bitrates, but H.264 is very new to me.
I obviously want to get the best results possible for an SD DVD, but I don't want to boost the bitrate and make it unplayable on DVD players.
    Can anyone offer any suggestions?
Also are there benefits to using H.264 over Mpeg2?
    Thanks in advance.
    James

    James:
You must encode to MPEG2 to create a SD DVD. Take a lok at this Site/titorial: Bonsai’s HDV to SD DVD page to get the most of your HDV.
As you have been told, forget the H.264 step.
    Hope that helps.

  • No Audio? On MPEG-2 encodes for SD DVD

    Help. I'm new to Compressor.
I'm trying to encode an MPEG-2 Elementary Stream for SD DVD production. According to the documentation DVD Studio Pro will only work with the elementary streams but it also states "that no audio is provided in this stream". So how am I supposed to encode to MPEG-2 (supported by DVD Studio Pro) and get my audio to go along with it?
Am I missing something obvious? Here are the details:
Source - 1080i60 HD .Mov file
    Encode - MPEG-2 16x9 elementary stream.
Video comes out fine, just no audio to be found anywhere?
    Thanks.

Correct. When you bring your source file into Compressor you need to create two settings. One setting for your MPEG-2, another for your Dolby Stereo .ac3 file. This will output two separate files, one video and the other audio. You then bring those files into DVD SP for authoring.
However do not use the default Dolby 2.0 setting. Start with that but change the dialog normalization to -31 and the Preprocessing Compression Preset to None.

  • How to encode .m2t for DVD

I have .m2t files, pulled from my DVR box thru firewire. I've tried converting them to several different QT friendly formats (.mov, .avi, .mp4, Divx, Xvid, etc), but each time, the audio ends up gradually out of sync with the video. To clarify, everything is synced up at the begining of a movie, but the audio gets further ahead of the video as it progresses.
My ultimate goal is to be able to get these videos on to a standard def DVD.
    Any ideas?

Hey I've been trying to do the same thing (transfer shows from my Motorola DVR to SD DVDs) and I came across your post; I have since discovered a way to do this! Not sure if you've tried MPEGStreamclip (it's free!), but I just found this little tip in the Streamclip user guide:
    CONVERTING THE STREAM
    Convert to MPEG...
converts the stream into a muxed MPEG (program stream) file; if the frame size is
suitable, you can import this file in Toast 6 or 7 or Sizzle and burn it directly, with no
encoding time and no loss of quality. Audio is left in its original format (MPEG, AC3 or
    PCM).
So I tried it: Opened the .m2t file (imported from my DVR) with Streamclip, then chose the Convert to MPEG option. Toast recognized the resulting MPEG file and burned a DVD without recompressing it--nice--, which was the first time I had ever seen that happen. This seems to be the most direct way I've found to get .m2t files onto DVDs.
Funny, I had never chosen the "convert to MPEG" option because I presumed that "MPEG" meant lower-quality MPEG-1, but it really is an MPEG-2 file.
    Good luck!

Yes it works very well on a mac, I can't say I've had the same experience on windows and I don't seem to be alone in this observation, but it won't cost anything to give it a go and see.
