Encoding Audio on Mac Pro(FinalCutProHD)

We are planning to encode a classical music television channel using Final Cut Pro HD. Our current channel encodes audio at 224k in standard definition but the standard mac HD software only provides for 192k audio encoding - have we been wasting our kb encoding at a higher bit rate or should we make arrangements for a higher encoding rate than 192k for high quality classical recordings in a HD environment or doesnt it make any difference? We dont want to have to come back later and reencode later. Many Thanks in advance.

We could well be talking at cross purposes because we have been encoding in the same format for fifteen years and now we have to sort it out again and out audio expert has long since left.
What we are doing is creating files that are program streams in MPG format - up till now been MPG2 MP@ML
for broadcast by cable operators and satellite channels who put the stream into their digital mux without us having to do anything elase.
Now we are moving to HD we have been told we should provide new program stream files in MP@HL format - the issue is what data rate should we provide for the audio to get the best sound whereby we will not have to go back at a later date and re-encode because people can hear that it isnt perfect in that environment bearing in mind that half our music content is classical.
There is the fiurther issue that broadcasters in cable television require the audio at 48hz for some technical standard and the software for editing is 16bit. We also need theend user to be able to pit the signal into their 5.1 surround sound system. Phew. Whate a minefiled for the uninitiated.

  • Premiere CC and Media Encoder crashing new Mac Pro

Since installing CC on my new Mac Pro (Late 2013) Premiere and Adobe Media Encoder have been continually crashing my system.
At first, my comp would freeze and I'd have to hard restart, then it switched to rebooting on in's own. This would happen 10-20 times a day while editing.
This began shortly after I synced settings from a previous version of PP but since I've installed new RAM; reinstalled CC/PP; reformatted my HDD and reinstalled Mavericks, CC, PP; and have not synced my settings. I've also tried editing multiple projects of different sizes with different media types -- all are experiencing the same problems.
When I edit the same projects on my MBP, everything works fine.
Recently, I have disabled GPU acceleration in all of my PP projects and that seems to have solved the problem.
My office received 3 Pros at the same time with the same hardware configurations and software -- I am the only one experiencing this problem.
    Here are some specs:
    Late 2013 Mac Pro
    2.7 Ghz 12-Core Intel Xeon E5
    64 GB 1867 MHz DDR3 ECC
    AMD FirePro D700 6144 MB
All drivers, CC, and software is up to date.
So what do I do now?
    Any help is much appreciated!

  • No audio for Mac Pro (mid-2012) running Win8.1 on Boot Camp

I've seen discussions around the 'net centered around this difficulty for Macbook users, but users experiencing this with a full-size (desktop) Mac Pro are hard to find. My mid-2012 Mac Pro, (running Yosemite on the Mac side) recently got entangled in the world of Boot Camp when I recently installed Windows 8.1, and I have since been unable to produce audio output from the Line Out. (My headphone output works fine, though it feels like browser audio seems a bit subdued. That's a topic for another discussion, though.) Most of the forum solutions for Macbooks that I've seen involve updating audio drivers, but I can't find any links or recommendations relevant to a mid-2012 Mac Pro. Has anybody else suffered this problem, and managed to conquer? I really don't want to get caught up in ping-pong between Apple's support geeks and Microsoft's nerds.

Hi, sede my blog, the only solution is on it.

So I have to reboot manual with holding power button, but cannot load osx (blank screen), I try to hold smc reset button, don't work too.
So I unplug and plug the memory raiser, so finally everything back to normal. It can loading osx snow leopard normally.
    So what is the problem?
    Thank you,
    David

It's a hardware fault. I suggest you make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have it tested. It's a free service. The repair won't be free, but if it's something simple, such as a bad memory module, you may be able to fix it yourself.

  • Logic 9 "disc too slow"  2 TB drive for recording audio on Mac pro tower, lots of system HD space 6 gigs ram?????

I purchased a Mac pro tower in 2008 it has a 320 GB system drive with lots of room left I have 2 500 GB drives and just purchased a new 2 TB 7200 RPM drive just to record from Logic onto it. I have 6 GB of Ram. I have been having this problem for years and I'm getting quite sick of it!.. I just set up a new 24 track project and I'm recording into logic via firewire with my Presonus firestudio and 2 digimax FS units at 44.1k and cant even record a few songs without it stopping in the middle of recording. This is sooo frustrating. Imagine when the band comes up with something cool and asks me to play it back and walk up to my $4,000 mac with my $500 worth of Logic to see it say Disc too slow!. I have seen this problem on many forums. Mac needs to fix this!. It makes me want to make a youtube vid of me burning my Mac with lighter fluid in the yard!. I purchased the "best of the best" at the time and Logic wont even work on a brand new Mac pro properly!?.. Cmon Apple help me out here???

Now that I've had time to stew over your comments. I do appreciate what you are saying however there should be another way to remedy this problem without having to purchase anything (ie in the software or an update, new version from apple). I ran a recording studio for Several years. I also did put a lot of thought and research into purchasing my Setup and had many compliments on the sound quality. What I'm saying is that Logic 9 should have no problem functioning on my computer. I think mac has made a poor product. I bet if I purchased the Pro Tools equivalent to Logic 9 that i could record 24 channels till the cows come home and get no errors. What I need to know is if there is something that I havent tried in my settings or software that can fix this. I think 6 gigs of Ram should be more than enough to work with. Here is what Apple has to say:
    Minimum System Requirements
    2GB of RAM (4GB recommended).
Display with 1280-by-768 resolution or higher.
    OS X v10.6.8 or later.
Minimum 3.4GB of disk space. (19GB of optional content available via in-app download).
So why should I have to purchase any Ram when it's supposed to work on only 3.4 gigs?... That's why your answer frustrated me. I meant no personal insult. I just think there has to be a better answer out there. I do appreciate your input though .

  • Digital Audio Output - Mac Pro and New OS/CS5.5 Install

    Hello all...
I hope I can word this properly - had a hard time with a search.
For my audio setup with Production Premium I use an external DAC/Amp which connects to the computer via the optical digital output. I have used this setup for years with no issues, including a year of Adobe Production Premium CS5.
Today I did a fresh install of Snow Leopard, updated to 10.6.8, and then installed (clean) ProductionPremium CS5.5.
I then set up After Effects, Premiere and the OS to use the "built-in digital output"
Here is what is strange - and something I never noticed with previous installations - each application seems to take over the output, and then "release" it when I switch apps.
Let me explain - when the DAC unit gets an audio signal from the optical cable, it makes a small audible click and then a second later the sound comes out of the speakers. With my previous installations, I only heard this click once - when I booted up the computer. After that, the signal stayed locked and I heard everything perfectly.
With this new installation, I have everything set up the same as far as I can tell, and I get sound, but I get that signal click EVERY TIME I switch apps. Working in Premiere, have sound... switch to After Effects, no sound, then click, then sound again. Switch to Premiere, click again. Switch to finder, click.
What's worse, is that Premiere seems to lose control because of this. For example, say I start in Premiere, do some edits, then move to AE. I have sound in Premiere, everything is fine. Do some work ini AE, get the click, but all is still fine, but then back to Premiere, I get the click, but no sound, and Premiere won't play anything back. I hit space and the play button in Program view turns to a stop button, but the time indicator doesn't move and I get no playback. If I go in to prefs, change the audio, and then change it back, Premiere works again!
Besides this headache, I also miss short sounds like system alerts and beeps, because they play before the audio 'locks' in.
EDITED TO ADD: Just noticed this - if I am running either Premiere or After Effects, in the "Sound" System Preference Pane, I get an option to set the output to "After Effects CS5.5" or "Premiere CS5.5" -- so it seems like the OS is treating is separately and switching when I move between apps - this definitely never happened before!
This is baflfing to me because I never had this problem before, and I am aware that my setup is probably not very common, but anyone with insight, please help!
Message was edited by: ScottieB1 to add info about System Pref Pane

Ok so I'm home now and continued my seach... and found this:
    http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-20075185-263/workaround-for-audio-problems-with-os-x- 10.6.8-update/?part=rss&tag=feed&subj=MacFixIt
I won't be able to try it until back in the studio tomorrow but it may just be what I need - will report back here. Seems that it is an OS issue though and not an Adobe one.

  • Firewire audio and Mac Pro

Dunno if this has been covered before (probably it has)
but my Griffin FireWave doesn't work with 10.5.2.
Any ideas on a fix (apart from downgrading to Tiger)?
    thanks
    John B

    Hi John B-
If still having problems, I recommend contacting Griffin. They seem to have a good support reputation.
The link that is causing so much trouble is this:

If that don't work, I give up!

  • Using boston acoustics digital ba735 speakers on my Mac Pro

just bought a Mac Pro. Would like to use my digital ba735 speakers from my old Gateway. These are proprietary and needed a digital sound card. Any way I can use some type of converter cord to accept the line out audio signal.

    Hi and welcome to Discussions,
I don't know about the Boston speakers, but have you tried connecting them to the Digital-Out at the back of your MacPro ?
Maybe this is sufficient to get sound.

  • QuickTime error -50, (only on Mac Pro workstation)

Does anyone know what QuickTime error -50 means?
I'm getting this constantly on my Mac Pro 3.0Ghz workstation, (in Batch Monitor.) At the end of encoding about 3 hours of footage into iPod format, Batch Monitor begins to error on about 3/4 of the encodes left to do, beyond the 3 hours of footage that have already been processed.
I was told, (by Apple support) that it may be something to do with the hard drives, but they all check out just fine. I also have a G5/quad running the exact same version of compressor and there are no errors during processing, (in batch monitor) no matter how much footage is processed.
Here's my hard drive configuration on the Mac Pro as well as the G5/quad.
Boot drive, (running all of my Apps) internal drive on Mac Pro.
Xserve RAID 10TB, (used for source movie storage, in 10bit uncompressed format, AJA I/o codec.)
2nd drive, (used for storage of reference movies stored on RAID) internal drive on Mac Pro.
3rd drive, (used for storing final encoded movies) internal drive on Mac Pro.\
All software and OS X are new installs, (from original disks.) The drives have been completely erased, formated and new installs of all software, using nothing from the original installs on the Mac Pro, as well as updated to all current versions of software and still the problem persists only on the Mac Pro 3.0Ghz, (4 core) workstation.
Any guidance on the source of the QuickTime -50 error would be appreciated.

    Thanks for the reply.
I tried a Google search, but to no avail, (no mention of QT error -50.)
I also looked at the error codes list you provided, but it would appear that those codes are related to OS X operation, (unrelated to QuickTime errors) but thanks for trying!
This is a very strange issue that has plagued me for as long as I have had this Mac Pro. I can take those files that failed with QT error -50, run them again and as long as there part of the first 3 hours of footage that is encoded on the Mac Pro, they will encode just fine. It is after that, that the wheels fall off and the QT -50 errors begin. Very frustrating as you can imagine.
I'm forced to run no more that three hours of footage at a time, limiting over the weekend encodes, on large batches of footage that needs to be transcoded into iPod format.
But again, thanks for trying, it is appreciated!

My big question is the audio card (or lack thereof). I like my 6.1 speaker system from Creative (Soundblaster folks) and was wondering what you Mac users do for quality multispeaker systems. I've scanned some of the discussion groups and aside from discovering that there isn't a PCI board thats fills the bill. I would appreciate any constructive comments (or unconstructive, if you want).
    thanks

If you intend to install Windows and play Windows games with the full surround experience, you are going to need a sound card. You are going to need a sound card that can cope with the way multichannel audio is encoded in games. We are talking here about EAX, DirectSound3d, that sort of thing. Nothing in (Intel) Mac hardware can decode this information, excepting for providing simple 2-channel audio.
My solution has been the Creative SB Audigy 2 NX external sound card. It connects via USB2. It does not work in the MacOSX environment because there are no OSX drivers to be had. In MacOSX, the card is seen as a simple analog input source, no outputs to speakers etc.
In Windows this card gives me up to 7.1-channel audio and all my games work well with it.
In addition, my experience with any sound card on a Winbox or the Mac Pro, is that games cannot send multichannel audio through to the speaker system equipped with optical input and decoder. You must employ the discrete analog sound out ports on the card.
So, it is possible on any Intel Mac to obtain the full surround experience in Windows games.

  • Mac Pro Locked Up and Now  One Video Card and Audio Not Working

Last night, my Mac Pro totally locked up to the point I had to power it off to get it to do anything. When restarted, one of my video cards and my audio are no longer working. I have dual monitors so tried switching the connections to see if it was the monitor and that was not the problem.
I tried doing a formal shutdown after the restart and this also did not clear up my problem.
Everything was working fine prior to the lockup. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

If you've added RAM and are using the nVidia 9400m video driver, you may be using incompatible RAM

My wife's MB is locking up when watching videos; hulu, iTunes, VLC. The above is the only answer I've found.

  • Windows 7 x64 USB AUDIO DEVICE - Device Not Working - Mac Pro

I have a mac pro early 2009. I had vista x64 installed, everything was great. I had 2 audio devices under device manager, one was listed as HD (digital) and one device was listed as analog audio.
When I played games and wanted the external speakers (using the digital out connection) I had the HD (digital) audio device enabled.
When I played games and wanted to use a headphone/microphone combo, I had the analog audio device enabled.
Switching between the two was as easy as clicking the audio device icon and clicking on whichever device I wanted.
Now that I installed windows 7 x64, I have a HD (optical out) device in device manager and it works perfectly. Unfortunately, I also have another device listed called "USB Audio Device" and it shows a yellow exclamation mark next to it and it is NOT working properly.
I tried many suggestions on here, which included downloading the cirrus logic audio driver and picking different models, as well as trying the snow leopard install disk driver for cirrus logic, and even tried installing the realtek analog driver. The closest I got to getting anything to work was installing the realtek analog driver. It installed fine up to the point when windows said "this driver is not tested, do you wish to install it anyway?" and I click yes, but then it pauses for a few seconds and the same message comes up again and repeats in a endless loop until you say "no, do not install driver" and then it does a uninstall of the driver.
Has anyone else experienced this problem and if so were you able to fix it?
    Thanks

I found Gigabyte has links to latest updates which work fine.
Treat Mac Pro as just a dual Xeon PC.

You can ignore USB audio, you want RealTek HD Audio. There are or can be some of those yellow alerts that are safe to ignore. Buried somewhere in Apple Support BootCamp technotes.
You can use installer from Realtek or zip file in which case just uncompress and update the driver from inside Device Manager. Nice thing, you can rollback a driver if you want to, or totally uninstall and then reinstall.

  • Optical audio and surround sound speakers for my Mac Pro

In the back of my Mac Pro there's an in and out for Optical Audio. What is this and are there any surround sound speaker systems out there that will plug into it? Most surround sound speakers seem to require a PC-style triple-input, with three jacks (Green to front, Orange to centre and Black to rear channels). Very few surround sound systems have the additional option for a single headphone socket-style jack, and I'm not sure if they will work terribly well with this single connection.
Can anyone recommend some speaker choices, particularly in the UK, that will give me good surround sound from the optical audio or single headphone jacks? Many thanks.

You might want to look at a device called the Griffin FireWave: [http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/firewave]
It connects to your MacPro via firewire, and has the green/orange/black jacks out to a standard 5.1 speaker system.
It comes with a software application that lets you customize the sound, and also synthesize surround from mono, stereo, etc., sources.
It would definitely open up your choices for speaker systems. I'm using one with a Klipsch 5.1 Promedia set of speakers. Works and sounds great.
