Encoding / Burning Time On Different Computers

We just purchased a few new Mac's.... an iMac 27"w/ Intel i5 2.8 and a MacPro w/ 2x 2.4 Xeon Quad-Core processor.
We bought the iMac's for simple photo editing and printing and the MacPro's for encoding and burning DVD's ... and now I am finding both encoding and burning the same, not good!
The encoding and burning time is almost the same on both computers... Actually the iMac is a little quicker (more then 5 minutes) then the Mac Pro
Why is the encoding time on both Macs basically the same?
My source files are MP4 H.264 10.05Mbit to be burns on a SD DVD (NTSC). We are putting about 25mins of footage on the DVD's.
Am I missing something? Should the Mac Pro with double ram and double processor be faster? Maybe a setting to speed up the encoding time on the Mac Pro?
Thank you for any help!

Hi William Q
Welcome to Apple discussions. Great question! Most Mac applications (iDvd included) are multi-threaded, at least to some degree. Multiple processors often boost performance in most multi-threaded applications as well as when one is multitasking; or having multiple applications running all at the same time.
The way to tell this is to run /Applications/Utilities/Activity Monitor.app, then right-click (or control-click) on the columns header line and ensure that the "# Threads" column is checked.
Now run your application(s) (as shown below) and you will see the number of threads they are executing. Note that this number varies according to what exactly the app is currently doing, as temporary task-specific threads may be created only when needed.

Watch what happens when I launch iDvd as well as multiple apps, including FCP.

    Hi there Katherine,
I have an article here that addresses this error code and can give you a few more troubleshooting suggestions for this issue:
Resolve specific iTunes update and restore errors
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3694
    Check USB connections
If there’s an issue with the USB port, cable, dock, or hub, or if the device becomes disconnected during restore, try troubleshooting the USB connection, then troubleshooting your security software.
    Common errors: 13, 14, 1600-1629, 1643-1650, 2000-2009, 4000, 4005, 4013, 4014, 4016, “invalid response”, and being prompted to restore again after a restore completes.
To narrow down the issue, you can also change up your hardware:
    Use another USB cable.
Plug your cable into a different USB port on your computer.
Try a different dock connector (or no dock).
Add (or remove) a USB hub between your device and computer.
Connect your computer directly to your Internet source, with no routers, hubs, or switches.
If you see your error after changing your USB connections, continue to the next section to troubleshoot your hardware.
Thanks for coming to the Apple Support Communities!

  • Can someone help me get my IPOD Touch 3g started? It will only flash the Apple logo off and on. Has been through restore multiple times on different computers, and still will not start.

I have tried restoring the ipod on different computers, one Vista, and one 7. On both, the restore process seems to complete just as it should, until the point where it says "your IPOD will now restart and will appear in listed devices. This IPOD never restarts. The Apple logo just stays on for approximately 30 seconds and then the screen turns off for five or ten seconds and the logo comes back on, over and over for approximately forty five minutes or so, Occasionally the "connect to USB" will come back on, but that is rare. When that does happen, the I-Tunes recognizes it again as an IPOD that needs to complete the restore process. VERRRRRY AGGRAVATING!!!

Time for an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store. It appears you have a hardware problem.

  • Render times on different computers

    Hi,
I have a  PC workstation laptop with i7 3.10ghz, 32gb memory and a Nvidia 5010m 4gb graphics card. Rendering a 1 hour video from ProRes to mpeg2 dvd is showing about 15 hours.
The same video is only taking  2 hours on a 2010 Apple mac pro, with 8gb memory and ATI Radeon HD 5770 1gb memory Using the same preset.
When I'm editing/using AE the PC is MUCH faster, and I would expect the render would be also faster on the PC, in fact I could not work on the Mac, because it would drive me bonkers!  Is there something I'm missing, or does anybody know why there would be such a difference in the render?
    Thanks.

    Hi Jeff,
Thanks for getting back. I had bought this laptop mainly to do work while away, and I found that the spec I picked at the time was the best I could get for the budget I had,  but I also found it was much faster than my desktop, so I've ended up using it as my main editing/AE/3D computer. I have two drives fitted, the C drive is an SSD, and the D drive is a hybrid, which allows me the volume, with the speed approaching SSD speeds. I usually upload my projects to the D drive, and work on them, and archive them off when finished. The Premiere version is the latest Creative Cloud one 2014.2 (8.2.0 (65) build). I have GPU acceleration enabled, and have tried rendering from AME as well. Attached are two screen shots, one from the MAC and one from the PC, for exactly the same video with the same effect (RedGiant Frames to de-interlace).
I used the same preset, Transcode to PAL DV Wide Progressive, and used AME for this render. You can see the MAC version was about 20mins, and the PC version was at least two hours, although because it was just a test I left stopped it after this screenshot.
The PC does not seem to use all the memory or CPU when rendering. Usually the CPU load is about 20% and the memory used is just about 5GB.  I used a USB2.0 HD for the Mac render, so if it was the HD that was causing the bottleneck, the MAC should have been slower. I'm now thinking though that the RedGiant effect could be more optimized for Mac rather than PC, and I'll check this out with them to see if that's the case.
    Thanks,
    Mike.

  • DVD burned from a disk image won't work on different computers???

Under the directions for how to burn a DVD from an disk image, the Apple Help document (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93006) says this:
"Note: When burning a disc from a disk image, the burned disc will have the same format as the disk image. If you need a disc that will work on different computers, burn the disc in the Finder."
Does this mean that the DVDs that I am burning from the disk image won't be able to be played on a PC? a Mac other than mine? Neither? WHAT? Video DVDs are in the UDF format. The disk image you created is in the UDF format. When you use Disk Utility to burn the disk image to writable media, the new discs will be in UDF format and all will be well.
    You are doing things correctly.
BTW, unless you have an external burner with lots of cooling, if you expect to use the burner in your Mac (which DOESN'T have lots of cooling), it's a good idea to pause between discs to allow the burner to cool down. (BTW, this comment is based on the reported results of several people in the forum. If you don't allow the cool down timer, you will start to create 'bad' discs. Also it is VERY important that you reduce the burn speed in Disk Utility to 4x or lower in order to create discs with maximum compatability with players. (You should see a way to change the speed in Disk Utility afterr you have inserted a disc.)

  • Time Machine: Backup folder changing size when connected to different computers

Can someone please help me wrap my head around why the size of my Time Machine backup folder changes when connected to different computers? I tried to be as thorough as possible.  Thanks in advance for taking the time to read this.
I made a backup of my one laptop (MacBook Pro running 10.6.8) before installing Mavericks.  The backup folder size is 258.56 GB and it is on a 1TB WD external.  There are no other computers backed up in this folder.
Last night, I tried to copy the backup folder to another 1TB WD external and ran into the “you can’t do that” message.  After some researching, I came across articles explaining how Time Machine handles HDs and, in order for me to copy my backup folder, the drive I want to copy the folder to needs to have the “Ignore ownership on this volume” deselected.
Okay, so here is my situation: I have the “Ignore ownership on this volume” deselected and journaling is correct on the drive I want to copy the backup folder to.  So I can continue working on my laptop, I want to use a different computer to copy the backup folder from one HD to the other.  The problem I’m having is each computer I own is showing me a different backup folder size O.o.
    (1) The computer I want to use – a Power Mac G5 Quad running 10.4.11 (non intel) – is showing a backup folder size of 592.7 MB, but the HD shows there is 258 GB being used.  When I drag copy, I only get a 592.7 MB backup folder.  For some reason, the backup folder is the only folder acting this way. I compared other folders from the same and different externals and all the sizes match up perfectly no matter the computer they were connected to. How is this possible?
    (2) My second option - Mac Pro (early 2009) running 10.9.4 – is showing a 256.15 GB backup folder size.  Very close, but not 258.56 GB.
    (3) My last option is to use the computer I’m trying to stay away from, the MacBook Pro running 10.6.8.  This is the computer I backed up and is showing me the correct folder size = 258.56GB.  As I mentioned, I'd like to work on my laptop while copying the backup folder using one of my other computers.
I am able to drag and drop from each computer, but the folder size depends on the computer I’m using.  I don’t understand why I can't do a simple drag and drop of a 258 GB folder.
    Many thanks!!

The directory files that you are seeing are not real. They are links to the actual backup files that are stored in a hidden directory on the drive. If you were to look at the same drive on a pc, you would see the folders and you would a list files that are in the folders but the files would all be 0 byte files and Windows will tell you the file is empty because there is nothing there but a link which Windows does not understand.
So the point is you can't just copy the backupd files. The best solution that I know of (and maybe someone else will chime in) for copying them is to mirror the drive with something like Carbon Copy or some other program.

I cannot for the life of me figure this out.

What you need to do is connect your phone to iTunes but do not click sync.  Go to File at the top and click transfer purchases from phone, that'll put all your apps into iTunes.  When it's done transferring, locate your phone on the sidebar and click it.  Then find the apps option above the picture of your iphone, you can select which apps you want or don't want on your phone.  After selecting your apps then you can sync.  Once you do this you should never have your problem anymore.

The phone was jailbroken. That's what that error indicates. You can't get help here. You can't get help from Apple.

I have a lion server set up to host storage for time machine backups. Is there a limit to how many different computers can back up to the single server to back up. I am only backing up the users folders . The backup drive is an external Drobo with 6 TB. Right now it seems to back up my users all day long. I set their time machine interval to every 5 hours but it still runs all day long and is very slow. Server is on a new Mac Server mini.

AFAIK, there is no user limit.. it is simply a question of the network load. AFP is a fairly clean protocol.. but TM is not.. it does a lot of testing of the backup.. infact your setting of 5hour gap could well make it worse.
I would sort out the clients that are doing 100GB backups to a different backup location.. no matter how fast your network.. 100GB takes time to backup.. and over wireless forever.. it will never end.
I guess some of these clients are on wireless?? I would separate the TM of wireless to those that are wired. No more than 4 or 5 wireless clients to a target device. Otherwise you are saturating your network with backup data. And use 5ghz.. so close by.. it is much faster than 2.4ghz and you will get much better transfer rates.

  • Can my wife and I share iTunes accounts on different computers?

My wife uses an Apple Airbook, I work on a desktop PC. I've had an iTunes account for a long time and we share music, etc. So can we share the same iTunes account from our different computers?

No. iOS is not designed at this time for multiple account logins. You would be synching over the top of each other.

  • How can I use the same "I Tunes" on two different computers

I’m using two different kinds of Personal Computer: One is Desktop PC And the other one is Notebook .
In each computer there are the same songs and when I get the new ones to the Desktop I want them to be placed on the Notebook or reverse.
Where does the I Tunes save the playlist on the hard drive ?
I have prepared a playlist on my Notebook and want it to be seen on the Desktop but I dont want to fallow the steps File > Library > Export Playlist on the Notebook. Is there any other way to make this issue instead of the mentioned steps.
How can I see the same Playlists and songs on two different computers ( notebook and desktop) including the updating processes.
    Operating systems of the computers:
    Desktop: XP Pro
    Notebook: Vista Bussiness

I use SyncToy 2.0 to keep two instances of my library in sync. SyncToy's preview will show which files it is about to update giving you a chance to spot unexpected changes and during the run only the changed files will be copied saving lots of time.
As long as I sync after making updates at one instance of the library before making any updates at the other then everything works just fine. I periodically run iTunes Folder Watch to check for any orphaned entries or new items that haven't been imported into the active library. If your machines are regularly networked together this process is fairly straightfoward. Mine are in disparate locations so I use one of the (physically) small WD My Passport host powered drives which I take between home & work, synchronising at either end. This gives me three complete copies of my library so I'm covering backup & synchronisation in the same operation.
When connecting my iPod at either location iTunes recognises itself as the "home" library for the iPod so I'm able to use the sync with selected playlists option without getting warning messages about the iPod being synced with a different library.

How many different computers can I sync my iPod with?  My laptop crashed and was completely wiped clean and this was the machine that my iPod synced with so I don't know if it will be counted as a "new" computer when I sync my iPod.

You can sync with onee at a time. Syncing to another will erase the current content.
Copy everything from your backup copy of your old computer to your new one.

  • HT1364 I used these instructions to move my i-tunes library to the external hard drive that two different home pc's access. My playlists do not show on both Is it possible to have one i-pod synch amid two different computers that use the same library?

I have a sole i-pod and two pc's, used the instructions for "iTunes for Windows: Moving your iTunes Media folder" in the hope that I could synch my one i-pod between two different computers that are sharing the same library. Is it possible to have two seperate computers that only share an external hard drive (one wireless, one not) ? When I am looking at a shared library should it appear the same on both machines (ie: playlists/ purchased list etc)?

If it is moved correctly, playlists will display on both computers and it should be possible.
    Close iTunes.
    Hold <SHIFT> and launch iTunes.
When prompted to create a new or open an existing iTunes library point iTunes to the iTunesLibrary.itl file on the external drive.
The entire library should now show up with all playlists and playcounts.
    Do this on both computers.
Keep in mind that only one computer can access iTunes at a time, otherwise errors will occur when each computer attempts to write to or update the iTunesLibrary.itl file.
Syncing may work seemlessly with both computers, but honestly syncing is designed to work with one and only one computer.
