Encoding in H.263, not H.264

I want to encode a short video in a variety of codecs to let my students figure out which ones they can view on their computers. (In particular, I need to find out how many of my students can view H.263 but not H.264.) I thought I knew how to do this in Quicktime Player... just choose Export, popup "Movie to Quicktime Movie", Options, [Video] Settings, and H.263 from the "Compression type" popup. But it's not there... just H.264! (Also missing are H.261 and Cinepak, which I sometimes found was necessary for running Quicktime movies on my older iBook since H.264 was too processor intensive during decoding.)
Has this codec been removed by Apple? It is still listed as a supported codec on Apple's Quicktime page. I have the Quicktime Player version 7.4.5 (25).

Try enabling "Show legacy encoders" in the "Advanced" tab of "QuickTime" system preferences (not the QuickTime Player preferences).

    If you are asking about the same content being converted to a target format using differing intermediate compression formats, then generally speaking, if all encoding settings -- especially the data rate, mode, quality, and frame type -- are exactly the same, the files should come out roughly the same with only minor differences reflecting differences in the intermediate files themselves. Quality, however, can vary drastically. If you are asking about a single source file being converted to 2 different codecs (e.g., FLV to H.263 and H.264), then differences are to be expected since each codec has its own unique characteristics and peculiarities -- e.g., how each codec reacts to vector motion, levels of brightness and/or contrast, how fast the codecs adjusts for changes in data rate requirements based on scene complexity, etc.

    Calm down,
    You mean how to re-encode an h263 video to h264?
    Why do you want to do this?, it won't look better, the only thing is that the resulting file may be smaller.
    Anyway if you must, you could use a number of SW packages.
    Nokia Multimedia Player that came with PC SUITE allows you to open a file then use the Save As... to change it in format. If you select MP4 unlimited or something like that it will use h264.
    You can also use Super from Erightsoft. It's free and simple to use encoder.
    You can buy ImToo 3GP encoder from ImToo.
    Xilisoft has also a number of encoding solutions.
    Any iTunes Video encoder will encode to h264, and it may take h263 sources.

  • Does iDVD work with Maverick? This is the first time I tried to burn a DVD using iDVD after upgrading to Maverick. It seems to get stuck at encoding menu stage and not doing anything.

    I did not have a DVD handy to burn but I have just created a small 2 minute video and created a Disk Image and also a VIDEO_TS folder, the encoding worked correctly, so it works with some items.

    Both After Effects & Adobe Media Encode CC giving are not letting me export movies.
    Some times they will, but after one file both programs give me the following error messages.
    After effects:
    “[file path and name].mov. An output module failed. The file may be damaged or corrupted. (-1610153464)"
    AME:
    "Can't read from source."
    I've went through the forum and found threads & pages discussing the problem.

    After following all the tips and suggestions (from deinstalling quicktime components & audio components to completely reinstalling CC) I'm still experiencing the problems.
    Which leaves me in a bit of a squeeze. I need to export over 144 movies in the coming 2 days and the only way to do this is to quit and open media encoder (or AE) after each single export.
    Not really an option.
    Both problems have the process Adobe QT sever in common, I took this from the console:

    Upgrading to CC has given our office nothing but problems.
    Hope someone can help to find a work around until Adobe realeases a proper update and solves this problem once and for all.

    Thanks for the really quick response!
    Regarding the crash log: it doesn't reference com.apple.audio.CoreAudio (though it did before, so I followed all the steps in your blog post before I posted to this forum).

    If you want to inspect it. It mentions the DXV codec (which I also uninstalled), but the crash keeps occuring. Also I need to export to DXV since it's the only codec the d3 media
    server accepts (http://d3technologies.com).
    I followed all the steps in the troubleshooting steps.
    Codecs used: I've tried everything from animation to Apple ProRes (including: h264/motion jpeg/uncompressed). With all codecs the Adobe QT32 server keeps crashing (though I can't always reproduce).
    Export destination: Internal SSD (same as where the OS is installed on) + External raid (via firewire & thunderbolt) + external HD via usb 3.0 (tried everything).
    When does the problem start: Really hard to specify, sometimes a day without crashes, sometimes every export for days on end. Sometime after restarting (tried logging out, restarting, switching off and on the computer). With other programs running and with out. Now checking every process active when exporting, and comparing log files.
    Can you export to other formats: See question 1, sometimes I can, sometimes not.
    When you launch AE and/or AME, is QT32 Server running? At what point does it stop running?  Still runing when I open the program. It crashes when exporting (ofter after finishing the first export).
    What component files are in your Library/QuickTime folder?: Currently the folowing:

    I'm trying to export a premiere pro file, I go through the "export settings" like normal and then "ok", it goes to "exporting data" but then doesn't go anywhere.
    Normally it should access the "Adobe Media Encoder" but it does nothing. When I try to access "Adobe media encoder from the programs it comes up with the error message:
    "Adobe Media Encoder.exe - Entry Point Not Found" - "The procedure entry point ??0NewHandlerInitializer@ErrorManager@config@@QAE@XZ could not be located in the dynamic link library dvacore.dll".
    So I'm guessing it needs reinstalling but where do I get it from? It is not in the Premiere setup files and it's not on the adobe website, only the updates are.
    I'm using Windows XP and AP-Pro CS4

    Just had the same problem. I have had cs2 cs3 and cs4 on the same PC Windows XP Pro.
    The exact error message as the o.p. was appearing during export from Premier and when opening Encore.
    I was able to resolve this issue after weeks by simply ...
    Close all Adobe programs and restart computer.
    Go to Windows>Control Panel>Adobe Version Cue CS4
    Adobe Version Cue Server window will appear.
    Make sure your firewall is not blocking Version Cue or Adobe Updater.
    Click Updates tab.
    Click "Check for Updates" button.
    Adobe Updater will connect with the update server. Click Details.
    Checkmark Media Encoder and Photoshop Media Encoder.
    Download the latest Adobe Media Encoder updates.
    Im finally encoding right now so Im not stopping to look at the update version, lol. but my current version of Media Encoder is now 4.2.0.006

  • Media Encoder and DeviceCentral will not open

    Adobe Media Encoder will not launch from Premiere Pro and (along with Device Central) will not open as a stand alone.  I went through all of my Web Premium CS4 programs and they all open except for the programs mentioned above.  I added Premiere Pro CS4 last week.
    Error messages:
    Adobe Media Encoder.exe - entry point not found.  The procedure entry point - ??NewHandlerInitializer@ErrorManager@config@dvacore@@QAE@XZ could not be located in the dynamic link library dvacore.dII.
    DeviceCentral.exe - ordinal not found.  The ordinal 10526 could not be located in the dynamic link library SCL.dII.
    Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

    The Java API documentation (the bit about character encodings) mentions "ISO-8859-1" but not "ISO8859-1". Try that instead?

    Looks like this error is comming from the Informix JDBC Driver.
    what version of the JDBC Driver are you using and is there anything special
    about the character set you used to create your database?
    Can you build a simple Java app to connect to the same database with the same JDBC Driver?

    Motherboard: Intel DX58SO
    CPU: Intel i7 2.97GHz
    RAM: 8 Gb
    Hard Disks: 2 in RAID (7200RPM)
    The problem is:
    Adobe Encoder CS6 stopped working, not start, what can I do?
    No works wanting to export from Premiere CS6 or opening it alone.

    Good luck with that, and don't forget to deactivate CS6. 
    My system is slowing down after nearly two years, and I am dreading a reinstall - there always seems to be something you have forgotten!  What really worries me is what happens to existing raid0 arrays seeing as the mainboard needs drivers.   They are backed up, but I just don't trust a single level backup, and will have to add a further 3Tb of drive space to make a straight copy of the raid0 arrays.  I also like the idea of Windows 8.1, but dread finding out that the drivers don't work!
    The Premiere Pro hardware forum is the perfect place to ask about stuff like that.  Harm, Bill, Erik etc. are super clued up on such things, so I shall run my concerns past them before committing. 
    So I wish you good luck again, and I know you'll make a plan before going ahead with it.

  • Encoded Files (.m2v) are not recognised.

    Hello,
    My encoded files (.m2v) are not recognised. The icon shows the blank page istead of the normal .m2v icon. and when i try to import into DVD SP 4 it unexpectedly quits.
    what would i need to reinstall to fix this? i have no idea how it happened, i came back from out of town and it was like this.

    You'll probably have better luck by posting this in the DVDSP forum.
    Anyway, the blank icon is not a good sign. Is the filesize of these files anywhere close to what you'd expect them to be?
    Are you using Compressor to create the files or a some other program?
    To me, this sounds like your encoder quit partway through the process.

  • CS6-Media Encoder Fails on long (1hr +) H.264 render

    Windows 7 - 64 Bit. 8 GBs RAM
    Adobe Pr and other programs on C: internal Plenty of hard disk space left 300+GBs
    External high speed 7200 RPM RAID 1 where the media is stored.
    External high speed 7200 RPM Non RAID drive for rendering to be written to.
    Both drives are eSata.
    CS6 Pr and Media Encoder 6.0.0.382 (OP update: It appears that has been an update to this version, I am going to download the updates and see if that fixes this.)
    FOLLOW UP: It appears that the update did fix the problem. I have multiple workstations and was under the impression I had updated them all. I have not fully tested this yet, but for now, I consider it fixed.
    Footage is a single capture of a lecture. 1 hr. 20 minutes.
    Shot on Canon xf105 in MXF format at 1280x720 23.976p (US)
    Footage goes together fine (many multiple file clips 'chained' or butted up against one another, as is done when you shoot a continuous take)
    The footage plays fine in Pr in final form for export.
    No special effects. one dissolve (intro title slide to lecture)
    Reproduceable problem:
    i export to Media Encoder.
    I choose H.264 and Vimeo Wide Screen SD 23.976
    The file exports about 2/3rds of the way, not the same place each time, and fails with no definitive error message. The log shows, "Export Error: Error compiling movie. Unknown error."
    Rendered file to external drive (have more than one, have tried it on two, with same results)
    All drives have plenty of disk space on them.
    I tried cleaning the Media Encoder Media Cache. Same result.
    I tried moving the cache files to an almost empty external disk. No change.
    I broke the video into a 10 minute segment, it rendered just fine with the same settings.
    This seems to be a bug in Media Encoder. Is there a fix for this? A workaround? My client would like a single long file of the presentation.
    Could the 8 GBs of RAM be an issue? Not sure why it would. Or is this a known bug for Media Encoder?
    I also had a second job today, similar in that I needed to take 6 multiple takes of the same person, drop them onto a timeline and render it to Vimeo for them to review. same issue. Got 13'05" into the compile and it failed.  So something is odd. I have compiled much longer footage before, that was done with this camera.

    If you have done a complete reinstall, and ran the Adobe CleanScript CS5 (that is the latest), then a Repair Install should not be needed - it would do nothing.
    For info, to do a Repair Install, one would insert the installation disc. When the installer module has loaded, it will survey one's system. If it finds the Adobe program(s), it will ask if you wish to Uninstall, or Repair Install. When one chooses Repair Install, it surveys the system again, for that program, and will replace, or correct any issues. This is usually MUCH faster, than doing an uninstall/reinstall.
    Good luck, and not sure what else could be the cause.
