Encoding in Terminal

Greetings,
Umlaute, so äüö, do not show in my Terminal.
I already checked the help information on "onfiguring Terminal to display high-bit characters" but it does not change it. I can neither write an ä nor can I see it within filenames.
If it were only that problem I might survive but the thing is that now Subversion doesn't want to do updates anymore because it could not convert the file to the right encoding.
Persönlich becomes Perso??nliche for example at the moment.
Any idea how to change that?
The weird thing is that the MacBook is new and it seems to have worked on the powerbook.
Thanks,
Oliver

Tom, Alt + y (or Option-y — I’m not sure which form is preferred to describe this set of key presses) also produces ¥ on a Japanese keyboard, and also results in \ being generated in Terminal in the UTF-8 encoding. It seems as though a bug report to Apple is in order.

  • Encoding on terminal to read/write ntfs hard drive help!

    I encoded in Terminal the codes that were posted online regarding the enabling of read/write for ntfs hard drive but something went wrong during the process. Would it be possible to undo it? Would there be any code to disable it so I could at least read it? It won't even read my hard drive anymore. I think I have accidentally delete the Volumes part where it was supposed to appear.

    Difficult to say without knowing what you did more precisely. Use the terminal history command as follows:
         history > ~/Desktop/MyNightmare.txt
    to save what you got up to in a file on your desktop. Copy and paste the lines that will show us what you did. Check for, and redact as necessary, any personal information such as user names, passwords, etc. before posting.
    Also, I assume that you tried to edit your /etc/fstab file so please post the results of these terminal commands
         ls -la /etc/fstab
         cat /etc/fstab
    too.

  • Apple Mail cannot encoding issues (Chinese Asian Language)

    I've abandon Mail for almost 2 years, 2 issues I had before is the 'disappearing mail' and the encoding problem.
    Now with my new MBP 17" I decided to use Mail again. I am getting the encoding problem again.
    Things I tried already:
    1. set the default encoding using Terminal to "BIG5"
    2. check under 'Composing' preference for 'Plain Text', uncheck 'use the same message format as the original message'
    3. Tried manually setting the encoding before sending. But in few instance Apple Mail tells me that there is an Error and cannot change the encoding. Even I succeeded in changing the encoding, there is no guarantee that the other side can read it properly.
    This usually happens when I 'reply' or 'forward' a Chinese email to someone. So far it happens to the HTML type email.
    Still I am getting problem sending mail that Outlook can properly decode by itself. To fix this from the Oulook side, they need to open the message by double click, select encoding for the message, and pick either UTF-8 or BIG5 (if the message is BIG5, select UTF-8 and vise versa) then the message will display properly.
    I know this could be an Outlook problem (probably is) but I cannot tell my customer to change encoding each time. I really need a way to do this from the Apple Mail side.
    The following is just one example of HTML email I replied and turns out to be BIG-5 under Outlook, but user need to select UTF-8 to view it.

    Hi xxxx...... (body of the message)
    I need help here, I still like the operation in Apple Mail but this is killing me. Please help.

    Thanks but I tried these already. Didn't seem to work.
    I switched to Thunderbird. Took a while to convert my mailboxes (30+ of them) from emlx to mbox and loaded into Thunderbird.
    Thunderbird is ok, address book really ***** since it doesn't work with the OSX Address book at all. I had to use vcf2ldif to convert address book but the Chinese character in the Address Book all became ??? in Thunderbird. And the time it takes to convert 400+ address is long (I already filtered the address book from my 1000+ contact)
    Font setting in Thunderbird is not good as well. Emails in my folders are in different fonts all the time due to the difference in encoding. I just need to get used to it.
    If Apple Mail can just handle encoding better, I will never switch. Both my customer and my family are having same problem, (because we all read/send Chinese Traditional email) Apple should do something. Already send email regarding this to Apple, and if there are other people with the same problem as me, pleas let Apple know about this.

  • Object encoding error

    Hello!
    "Object encoding error; terminating connection :
    rtmp://_defaultRoot_/_defaultVHost_/onair/_definst_"
    This message sends the FMS 3.0 to the console, when I try
    connecting to a remote shared object from a client side flash app,
    and after the NetConnection.Connect.Success the connection
    immediately closes.
    I use this app since several months, and it was usable. But
    now it's not work...
    Please help me!

    check up with a the object encoding of the swf's; You may be
    using two swfs with different object encoding settings.
    AMF3 shared object cannot be shared with an AMF(0)
    client.

  • Cannot view SharedObject data in Admin Console

    I'm attempting to view Shared Object data in my FMS Administration Console, but I consistently get the error:
    Object encoding error; terminating connection
    I'm using Flex 3 with FMS 3.5, I'm positive that everything is using AMF3. The Shared Objects do seem to work - I can connect to the shared object through another instance of the app and pull saved data - but they are not inspectable in the administration console. Also,  very often when a new instance connects to the server I get a RangeError and all of my Flash Player instances crash. Any idea what could possible be going on?

    Hi,
    It is documented. Pls visit http://help.adobe.com/en_US/FlashMediaServer/3.5_AdminGuide/WS5b3ccc516d4fbf351e63e3d119f2 925f73-7fef.html#WS5b3ccc516d4fbf351e63e3d119f2925f73-7ff0 for the details about the same.
    More over, did you set "application.allowDebug" property to true in your server side code or in the Application.xml
    <Application>
    <Debug>
    <AllowDebugDefault>true</AllowDebugDefault>
    </Debug>
    </Application>
    you have to make debug connections to view your shared objects in admin console.
    Regards,
    Janaki L

  • Are you able to "debug" the default "live" service in FMIS?If

    Maybe I'm doing this wrong...
    In my:  "fms_install / applications / live" folder I've added the Application.xml code to allow debugging:
    Looks something like this:
    <Application>
    <AllowDebugDefault>true</AllowDebug Default>
    <AllowHTTPTunnel>true></AllowHTTPTunnel>
    <StreamManager>
    <VirtualDirectory>
                  <!-- Specifies application specific virtual directory mapping for streams.   -->
    <Streams>/;${LIVE_DIR}</Streams>
    </VirtualDirectory>
    </StreamManager>
    When I load up the FMS admin console though I can't preview the Live video streams.  Am I doing something wrong?
    ( Live streams ARE working correctly.. this is just annoying me that I can't preview them through the admin console. )

    Ah HA!
    Thanks SE.
    That's enabled the debug options in the admin console again.
    Unfortunately I am still unable to view the streams.
    When I select a stream and hit the "play stream" button the video player is blank and the log spits this out:
    "Object encoding error; terminating connection : rtmp://_defaultRoot_/_defaultVHost_/live/streamName"
    What's weird is that my client can view the stream correctly.
    I've also fired up liveMediaEncoder and broadcasted a test stream to the live app.
    ( That stream I can preview in the admin console... so whatever this is its limited to my broadcasting web app and the FMS console...  +_+     )

  • Strange å ä ö persist to hotmail clients

    First I had problems with the swedish letters å ä ö turning into illegible chinese characters on the receiving end for some pc users. I fixed that with the UTF8 encoding in terminal.
    Then a couple of my friends with hotmail mentioned my mails always appear with strange characters, the words
    läst på
    appear as
    läst på
    no matter what I test as the other solutions
    I have sent with dingbat in the signature, at the beginning of the message and I have also tested plain text for the entire mail
    NOTHING WORKS
    It is really exasperating as I just sent a news release to a list of about 400 about my new audio book. I have no way of knowing how many are plagued by the character problem but at least hotmail seems to be a problem receiver.
    Is there anything else I can do?
    Eva

    I got an answer from Hotmail support:
    Dear Eva,
    Thank you for writing to MSN Hotmail Technical Support.
    I am Ronald and I am responding to your inquiry. I gather that your recipients (Hotmail members) are unable to view properly the Swedish characters.
    I understand how important this is for you and I would like to apologize for any inconvenience this matter may have caused you.
    For your recipients to view foreign characters, please tell them to install the appropriate Microsoft Internet Explorer multi-language support from the Add/Remove component option in your Control Panel, or download the language packs directly from the Internet Explorer site.
    To download your preferred language pack, visit:
    http://www.microsoft.com/smserver/downloads/20/servicepacks/sms20sp5/clientpacks .asp
    You are valuable at MSN and we look forward to providing you with consistent and effective service.
    Sincerely,
    Ronald D.
    MS! N Hotmail Technical Support
    Now all I have to do is get one of my hotmail friends to do this...
    Will let you know how it goes.

  • Romaji yen sign in Terminal in the UTF-8 encoding

    Hello all,
    I have a MacBook Pro with a Japanese keyboard running Mac OS X 10.6.2. In Romaji mode, the Japanese keyboard has a dedicated yen sign (¥) key, and Option-¥ produces a backslash (\). In Terminal, for some reason, the ¥ key produces \ without the Option modifier. (Option-¥ also produces \ in Terminal, which is normal behavior.)
    A similar situation was discussed in an older topic, http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10665836 , where the problem was diagnosed as having the Shift JIS encoding enabled in Terminal. However, this doesn‘t reflect my situation, since the only encoding that is enabled in my Terminal is UTF-8 – and there‘s certainly a yen sign available in UTF-8.
    I am able to type other UTF-8 characters in Terminal in Romaji mode; for example, I can type Option-e e to produce é, and entering the command *echo é | od -x* within Terminal shows that the correct UTF-8 byte sequence is generated for é. Since the command *echo -e '\0302\0245'* within Terminal will produce a yen sign there, the problem seems to be connected to the key mapping rather than to a stty interface problem.
    Is there anyone running 10.6.2 with a Japanese keyboard who can type the ¥ key in Romaji mode in Terminal with the UTF-8 encoding enabled, and have a yen sign appear rather than a backslash?
    (This topic was initially posted in the +Installation and Setup+ forum, and I‘ve taken the advice of a kind soul there to repost the topic in this forum.)

    I don't know the exact reason why ¥ is forcefully converted to \ in Terminal (even in UTF-8 encoding), and anyway it would be better to add an option to turn off this conversion (or there may already be a hidden option which I can't find).
    But the conversion may be helpful for many users, as expected from the following reasons:
    I guess there is no key for backslash on the Japanese keyboard of MacBook Pro. If this is the case, then being able to input \ by just hitting the ¥-key (instead of typing option-¥) may be "useful" for may Terminal users (because \ is used much more frequently than ¥ in programs). Kotoeri has an option to swap ¥ and option-¥ keys (so hitting ¥-key inputs \ and option-¥ inputs ¥), but this setting is global (i.e., not restricted to Terminal.app), so making this as the default setting may confuse most of Japanese users (they don't use Terminal.app at all, but uses ¥ as the currency symbol in other apps). Even Terminal users would use ¥ more frequently than \ in apps other then Terminal, so don't want to modify the global setting.
    Another reason may be that there are still many Japanese textbooks for programing which uses ¥ as the escape character (I guess you know why). For example the first C program looks like: printf("Hello World!¥n"); So many beginners would try to input ¥ as written in the textbook, without knowing the escape character in UTF-8 should be \, not ¥. Converting ¥ to \ may be helpful for these users (of course they would be surprised to see not ¥ but \ appears on the screen, but anyway the program would work).

  • How to prevent Terminal's character encoding from changing

    I have a command-line script that runs continuously, and occasionally echos to STDOUT some binary data that, apparently, changes the way Terminal displays certain characters. Is there any way of preventing this from happening? Say, by locking down Terminal's character-encoding?
    ...Rene

    Rene,
    I am not sure if you can prevent this thing from happening but you can set things back to normal by using the reset.
    Another possible solution is to write the output of STDOUT to a file so that it will not be displayed on screen.

    Every time I load Media Encoder it crashes when "Loading Looks3_AE10.plugin. I have no idea where to even start with trying to fix this. • Adobe Media Encoder won't start

    Not OP, but I have the same problem. AME just won't run. Double click, it's loading, I can see the process in Windows Task Manager but it just goes away again. Tried deleting that watch folder .xml but not working. Here's my spec from the FAQ:
    What version of Adobe Media Encoder? Include the minor version number (e.g., Adobe Media Encoder CS6 with the 6.0.1 update).AME CC from premiere cc 7.0.1
    What other Adobe applications do you have installed, and what application are you using Adobe Media Encoder with?Premiere Pro. Premiere Pro
    Have you installed the recent updates? (If not, you should. They fix a lot of problems.)Used creative cloud to update to latest version
    What operating system? This should include specific minor version numbers, like "Mac OSX v10.6.8"---not just "Mac".Windows 7. All update patch installed.
    Are you using Adobe Media Encoder through a Creative Cloud Membership subscription?Yeah
    What kind(s) of source footage? When telling about your source footage, tell us about the codecs, not just the container types. For example, "H.264 in a .mov container", not just "QuickTime".N/A. App won't launch
    If you are getting error message(s), what is the full text of the error message(s)?No error message
    Is the problem only occurring with a specific output format or encoding preset? If so, which one? If this is a custom preset not included with AME, then upload the preset file to a file-sharing site and provide a link.No.
    What were you doing when the problem occurred?Booted up the computer. Launch AME.
    Has this ever worked before?Yes.
    What other software are you running?Google Chrome
    Do you have any third-party codecs installed?Avid DNxHD, Cineform Studio
    Tell us about your computer hardware. Be especially certain to tell us about third-party I/O hardware (e.g., AJA, Matrox, Blackmagic, MOTU).Regular desktop
    Are you using Mercury Playback Engine GPU Acceleration in Premiere Pro?Yes.

    I have a problem like this:

  • YET ANOTHER MEDIA ENCODER WILL NOT OPEN AT ALL THREAD

    Read the other threads concerning Media Encoder crashing on start up and no solution worked for me.
    I have Creative Cloud.  I have a brand new Macbook Pro - 10.9.1.
    I have tried uninstalling all Creative Cloud applications and running the Adobe Cleaner.  Reinstalled and Media Encoder still doesn't work.  I have tried deleting preference files.  Still no good.  I have read and write access to the Adobe Folder.
    I did read that initially Red Giant software was causing a problem.  I had installed Red Giant Color Suite because I had a license for MOJO.  I unistalled the Color Suite after I read there was a problem.  I also have the Shooter Suite because I use Plural Eyes.  I don't need MOJO really, but I have to have Plural Eyes.  It is still installed.
    I have read through the several threads on this same topic and I think tried everything.
    Without Media Encoder, the rest is useless - if I can't deliver to clients!  Brand new computer just got yesterday.
    Any other ideas?
    thanks,
    JET

    Well, I absolutely DID make sure that the permissions were set to Read and Write for the Adobe folder in the Preferences folder of the Library.
    I did this on a system level.  On a whim I changed the sharing & permissions for staff and everyone. At this point I am sure you can guess that it worked after.  AME launched just fine and I was able to quickly import and export into AME stand alone, as well as have it launch from Premiere and export from there.  Thanks to Dima Tikhonov for making me go back and take another look at that.
    So… problem solved.  I meant to immediately get on the forum to say what happened for the fix, but I was so excited to get everything working on my new computer I dove head first into sorting through five hours of footage I shot yesterday morning.
    THANKS Adobe Forum!

  • Window location for .terminal file

    Hi,
    I have a custom .terminal file that opens a terminal window to a
    specific number of columns and rows, and runs a command.
    Although I can cause plain ol' Terminal to open at the top left of the
    screen by moving it there, then closing it, my custom file insists on
    opening towards the middle of the screen.
    I want it at the top left.
    I've already deleted the pref file, no joy.
    Here are the properties for my custom file:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>

  • Can I use the 'Export Signal Property Node' on a quadrature encoder?

    Hi,
    So I don't know which counter board I'd be using yet for this (it's used in conjunction with a PCI-6280--the PCI-6280's counter inputs are all taken and so I need another board), but assuming this is possible at all in DAQmx I wouldn't mind knowing whether, say, the PCI-6601 (or any other timer board for that matter) could do this. I'm programming this in LabVIEW 2010 by the way.
    I want to have a counter which counts the number of pulses on one channel (I'll call this the 'clock' channel) between when another channel goes from low to high (which I'll call the trigger). It's basically a pulse width measurement, but I only care if there are more than n clock pulses between triggers. I need to have a hardware-timed digital signal which goes from low to high if there are ever more than n pulses between trigger changing state from low to high.
    What I am planning to do is this:
    Wire 'trigger' to the z-input of the quadrature encoder, and set the z-input value to some arbitrary large value such that, at the quadrature encoder counter task's settings, the counter reaches terminal count in n pulses.
    Configure the quadrature encoder counter using DAQmx Export Signal Property Node (tutorial I was looking at is here: http://zone.ni.com/devzone/cda/tut/p/id/5387 ) to toggle a digital channel ('counter event output') from low to high if the counter reaches terminal count (ie, if the encoder reads n pulses).
    If the encoder ever reads n pulses on 'clock' between two rising pulses on 'trigger', it sets counter event output high.
    Is this possible? Reading through the manual of M series PCI-62xx devices, the index pulse loads the counter with a particular value so it seems like you could conceivably set the counter to the terminal count if you wanted. My only real problem is whether DAQmx Export Signal Property Node works on all counter tasks or just on edge counting tasks.
    Thanks in advance for your help. If this isn't possible, I can reply with more details on the problem this is supposed to solve so that you can help me figure out an alternate method.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    There is probably a way to do it, but it it may be easier to use an X-series board for the job.   They support a new counter capability for count reset on a digital edge without needing to be configured in encoder position mode.  I am not sure exactly how that feature's been implemented however, so maybe it won't make things easier after all.
    The plan based on the hoped-for behavior:
    1. Configure an X-series counter for pulse generation based on "ticks" of your clock channel.
    2. Set both initial delay and low time to the critical # of ticks.
    3. Configure for count reset on a digital edge (if possible in pulse generation mode)
    4. Configure the count reset value to be the critical # (or possibly 1 less, if possible in pulse generation mode)
    5. If you want the output to remain high indefinitely, configure the counter task to use its own output as a
    pause trigger, and pause while high.
    The way pulse generation works is to preload a # of "low time" ticks into the count register.  Then every source edge will decrement the count.  When the count reaches terminal count (0), the counter's output is toggled (or can be configured to pulse).  The register is then loaded with the # of "high time" ticks and the process continues.
    You would be perpetually interrupting the count-down process as long as you got your triggers in time.  The count would keep getting reset to the # of low counts, keep decrementing toward 0 without reaching it, and so on.  If ever you did reach 0, the output state would toggle high, then the high state would prevent subsequent clock signals from decrementing the count.
    You can conceivably do a similar thing with a 6601, but I'm pretty sure you'd need 2 counters working together to get it working.
