Encoding options

Hello,
I am working in Premiere 5.5 on some content that is headed for the web.
Currently, in order to produce a video that works on all platforms and mobile devices - I have to take the video rendered from Premiere thru meda encoder and run it thru the program HandBrake to get it to play across the board.
I am wondering if there is a preset in the H.264 format that will allow me to make a video for all platforms and mobile devices without using Handbrake - essentially eliminating this extra step.
Also - is there a suggested frame size for mobile devices? web pages?
Thanks!
Ted

Have you tried the Media Encoder H.264 presets? It does really good job of setting the correct Level and Profile for devices.  (Although it uses Baseline level for iPhone, which is clearly capable of playing Main)
Also, Quicktime X Player "Save for Web…" automatically makes three h264 movies for iPhone WiFi, iPhone 3G, and Computer. As well as the HTML code to embed it into your website and to play back the correct version according to how the device is accessing your movie.

  • Why am I not seeing file.encoding option in file sender/receiver communicat

    Good Morning Everyone,,
I am not able to find file.encoding option in both sender/receiver communication channels on my XI system.  Is it something to do with Java Runtime character sets installed on the XI system?
Do we need to setup something to make it available?  thanks in advance...

    Hi,
Please specify File Type parameter as Text (By default it is Binary)
For File type parameter Text the file encoding will be displayed, UTF-8 is by default encoding used.

What program produced that email? iPod? The one you sent me had two different charsets.
I wrote a html e-mail in Outlook, and a plain text e-mial in my iPod.
I think It's mismatch in character set and contents. Is it right?
Sorry, but I can't understand what you are referring to. You sent me a message from your ipod. It had two different charsets. That is not a bug. Outlook does have a bug which makes it misread messages with two different charsets. Apple could accomodate that bug by having the ipod use the same charset instead of two different ones, and that is the easiest fix, because MS makes garbage software and never fixes its bugs.

Aw geez, they sure have messed up OSX.
Do you have a backup of 10.8.2?
    Maybe...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.
If that doesn't help Reinstall the OS.

  • Where are encoder options in cs5.5?

I just picked up a trial version of this so I'm just learning.  I have to compress large files but I'm not sure how.  My coworker (using Audition cs3) told me to do File > Save As > Options for something called 'encoder options'.  I can't find that on my trial of cs5.5.  Is there another location?  I don't know much about this stuff, but I guess I'll have to change the file to 20 kbps and 11025 Hz if those options make it any clearer of what I need to find.
    Thanks!

    Hi,
When you select File > Save As.. you should see the following dialog:
Change the Format box to the format you want,  MP3 for instance.  The Sample Type can be modified using the top Change... button to the right and lets you modify the sample rate, bit rate, and channelization.  The Format Settings description shows the current codec-specific options and these can be changed using the lower Change... button.  These options will be different depending on the file format to which you are saving, so if you have additional questions about how to compress these files, please let us know the format.  At the bottom, note the Estimated File Size which should help you determine the trade-off between quality and file size.

Firefox is displaying unreadable characters when visiting some websites like digg. The sites work fine in all other browsers. I've tried all encoding options in firefox.

This issue can be caused by an old bitmap version of the Helvetica or Geneva font or (bitmap) fonts that Firefox can't display in that size.
Firefox can't display some old bitmap fonts in a larger size and displays gibberish instead.
You can test that by zooming out (View > Zoom > Zoom Out, Ctrl -) to make the text smaller.
Uninstall (remove) all variants of that not working font to make Firefox use another font or see if you can find a True type version that doesn't show the problem.

  • Can I change encoding options?

I know in preferences I can choose between best quality and best performance, but neither of these are any good....any video I've encoded looks crappy on dvd...I've used several different players and multiple tv's. If the tv is over 46 inches everything looks crappy...if it's smaller, it looks 'ok' at best. When I encoded using Toast, things looked a lot better, but I had more control over the encoding settings. I prefer the more polished look of iDVD and love their templates. If there is a way to exercise more control over the encoding I"d love to know...
    Thanks in advance!

    John T,
I've encoded with both Toast and iDVD, and I think iDVD is just as good, even on my 42" plasma....but with one HUGE caveat: If you are using still pictures in iMovie before going to iDVD, the encoding will be horrible if you do not use the Ken Burns efffect on all your stills.
Also, sometimes what looks like horrible encoding is actually sub-standard burning. I always "Save as Disk Image" and burn at 1X using Toast.
But the final answer to your 64$ questions is that Best Quality and Best Performance are the only two encoding options that exist in iDVD.

  • Dolby Digital Encoder Does Not Support Any Encoding Options

Is it just me, or are there no encoding options for the Dolby Digital encoder other than the bitrate?
How are you supposed to select the dialog normalization, dynamic range compression profile, etc. for your audio? Without these parameters set correctly, the audio will not be encoded correctly.

    @jbowden:
    > Adobe licenses the AC3 encoder that Encore uses from Dolby Laboratories. This is stated quite clearly in the splash screen, the box, and other materials distributed with Encore.
I didn't say otherwise. But what they license is the code, not the implementation. Implementations are supposed to be submitted to Dolby for approval, and I'm surprised that Dolby approved the implementation given the oversights and encoding quality.
    > It's a consumer-level encoder, and if you look around this forum I think you'll find very few posts about audio quality, which would seem to indicate that Encore provides acceptable audio quality for most users. Cases with audible clipping can occur if the input signal is too high...keeping your audio signal around -6db should eliminate any clipping.
I don't buy into this whole argument about "consumer-level" and "professional-level". What is the exact difference? Dolby's code is constant across all licensed encoders, so any differences in encoding are the result of an implementation difference, and that's Adobe's fault, not Dolby's.
Audio signals are audio signals. Why do I have to keep my audio from peaking above -6dB with the Adobe encoder? I can take audio whose peaks go all the way up to 0dB and encode it with the Sonic Foundry encoder with no problem -- no clipping, no volume pumping, etc. Not so with Adobe Encore's implementation.
    @Neil Wilkes:
    > As far as Dialnorm goes, again I say it is pretty meaningless in a stereo file.
Dolby's encoding guidelines documents seem to say otherwise. In my readings, it seemed pretty clear that the decoder must have the dialnorm parameter set to the LAeq level of the dialog in the audio regardless of channel configuration.
    > I suppose, although as long as the stereo mix is actually set up correctly there is no need to invoke DRC. The only time DRC would be needed on a stereo file is if the thing is too darn loud.
I have to disagree with this. There is a LOT of material that can benefit from DRC, both soundtracks that contain a large dynamic range (explosions to whispers), and soundtracks that have small dynamic range (speech). DRC doesn't have anything to do with the overall volume level of the soundtrack, but the dynamic range of the soundtrack. If the soundtrack is too loud overall, that's not a DRC problem, that's a level problem.
    > In a properly balanced stereo file, there is no need at all for DRC or Dialnorm. There is no centre channel containing dialogue, just a phantom centre, so what are you going to reference it to, please? How can you attenuate the left/right channels with reference to the centre channel dialogue when there is no centre channel present?
Just because the dialog isn't isolated in the center channel doesn't mean you can't use it to set the dialnorm parameter. Plus, the decoder doesn't attenuate the left/right channels with reference to the center channel, it attenuates the entire soundtrack on playback.
Your quote from Dolby labs is very correct. Following that procedure ensures that the decoder, when it applies attenuation based on dialnorm and applies DRC will work as intended.
    > Additionally, it is not referenced to average RMS either. RMS is close to the correct way to measure, but not correct.
That is true. However, I don't have any equipment to measure LAeq directly, so RMS of a dialog section of my audio will have to do. I do know this: When I applied to Dolby for logo usage on my DVDs, they requested samples of my DVDs for approval of my methods. My first submissions (where I didn't bother with dialnorm & DRC) were rejected, and Dolby sent me a letter telling me such. After I produced further DVDs using my method in my Doom9 post and resubmitted the DVDs to Dolby, they were approved. I can only conclude that my method, while not perfectly accurate, is good enough to qualify for Dolby's rigorous standards.
The bottom line is that I feel I have enough evidence to conclude that the DD encoder implementation in Encore is substandard. If you or anyone else feels it meets your requirements, then use it. But I for one will not allow a single DVD to go out from my company with audio encoded with this encoder.

  • Mail Text Encoding Options Missing

For some reason, the Message -> Text Encoding pull-down menu in my Mail has only one option -- "Automatic". All other options are missing. Thus I am here seeking for help.
All the information I've found told me that I should go to the International Pref Pane, choose Language, click the Edit List button and choose the languages I want. I did so, and there are indeed several languages in the list. Still, the pull-down menu in Mail shows no options at all, only "Automatic".
Does anyone know what went wrong? Is some file corrupted in some way?
    Thanks!

I deleted com.apple.mail.plist (in fact I it them to another location so I can restore it in case things go wrong) and re-launched Mail. This time I got all the menu options that should be there. I had to re-create all the mail accounts, but the saved emails were not lost.
    Problem solved! Thanks!

  • IDVD 08...Encoding Options

I am confused. I am using iDVD 08 to burn a dvd and I am unsure of which Encoding I should use. I want the best possible dvd quality. But the amount of space the video uses up with each setting doesn't make since.
    "best performance" = 6.81 GB
    "high quality" = 3.95 GB
    "Professional Quality" = 3.95 GB
My question is which is better? I would assume the one that takes up the most space would be the higher quality one, but here that is "best performance" and not high quality. I did already burn a test copy of one of the videos that will be on the DVD under "best performance" and it turned out alright. But is "high quality" or "professional quality" any better?

Roughly Best Performance will only encode 60 minutes or less so does minimal compression of the source media at a fixed rate. The other options do a two pass encoding. The first pass will determine which parts of the project can stand the greatest amount of compressions, i.e. stills, etc. and which require the least, video where there's zooming or fast action. These will get less compression. This gives you different sizes. Some of the other more advanced users than I can give a more technical description.

  • Can't locate 2 pass encoding option in Adobe Media Encoder

I'm using Premiere Pro CS3 on Windows XP. I'd like to encode in 2 pass, but can't find the option in Adobe Media Encoder. I've tried all of the different export formats (H.264, FLV, etc) but the option or a menu never appears. I've looked on all of the tabs. How do I specify 2 pass encoding?

    Hi
    example  H.264 export format
    example preset...DV..
On the right hand side of your export contols there's a " scroll bar" for the menu options to you can scroll down to see more settings...you'll see your bitrate and vbr, cbr etc options down there

  • Jspc -encoding option equivalent for appc

    Hi,
hoping you can help. I am looking to move from using jspc (deprecated) to use appc to precompile my jsps for deployment on wls 8.1.
The issue is that I need the compiler to be passed the "-encoding ISO8859_15" parameter. There does not seem to be an equivalent with appc and all my attempts to pass "-J-encoding ISO8859_15" failed with no such parameter as "J-encoding".

  • Project Info Encoding Options?

sorry -- need to revise this post after clarifying some test results
Message was edited by: John Bertram

So if Best Quality uses a lower bitrate perhaps it should be called Less Quality
Bitrate isn't everything. A good encoder may well produce better quality with a lower bitrate than another encoder with a higher bitrate. And often good quality takes more time to encode, too.
I have done some tests and at least with that particular test material I got slightly better quality in a very few high-action scenes with Best Performance.
But since most of my DVDs are >60 minutes, I always use the Best Quality setting.
should a DVD from videotape have the same quality (good, bad or indifferent) as the original?
MPEG encoding compresses data so the quality will always suffer. But usually you don't notice it. It also depends on the input material: difficult to encode scenes include high action, noisy low-light scenes, water, smoke etc.
With Best Performance or with <75(-90) minutes' Best Quality the iDVD output quality has been OK for me.
But I'd wish iDVD used compressed audio because uncompressed PCM audio steals way too much bandwidth from video in long (90-120 min) DVDs!

  • Tweaking Encore encoding options

Hi,  I love the Feature where you can have Premiere Pro Open and Create you DVD project in Encore before Transcoding the project. This option is very useful mainly to make sure every thing is correct in Premiere Pros timeline and that it looks good on the final DVD. This option can save a lot of time if you forget or misspell sometime simple, etc. You can usually catch these mistakes with out having to perform an Export then find out you made a simple mistake and have to export the project all over again. I find that the Export option from Premiere Pro creates a much better end product than Transcoding in Encore. Can you work on tweaking this option.   John Gerard

Dynamic is indeed powerful.  And I find CS5 better than previous versions.  What sort of tweaking do you have in mind?  The best way to get Adobe's attention in this regard is a feature request. Where else have you heard that this morning?  Ha, ha!  In include the feature request link here in case this is the only post another person visits.
