Encoding ProRes for Blu-ray

I have FCP 6.6 and Toast 10.0.3. I simply want to make a Blu-ray disc. I have a 720 24p movie. If I export is from FCP with the DVCProHD codec and bring it into Compressor it immediately gets all jaggy and looks like it lost half of its lines of resolution (before even assigning a target). So I exported from FCP using Apple ProRes 422 HQ. When I brought that into Compressor it looked fine. I compressed it and brought it into Toast to make a Blu-ray. I didn't have re-encode set to "Never" so it re-encoded it. Even re-encoded it looked 1000 times better than what happened with the DVCProHD blu-ray (which was completely unacceptable). But of course I don't want to to re-encode. So I dragged and dropped the ProRes clip straight into Toast to let it encode it and I get a -50 OSX error. So that doesn't work for some reason. So I took the ProRes clip and selected "Never" for re-encode and Toast just crashes every time. Short of upgrading to FCP7 I am at a loss of what to try next. Is any one encountering these problems? Know why ProRes won't MPEG-2 in Toast? In another post I read about an involved workaround for getting Toast not to re-encode which involved creating a disc image.

I had never tried using MPEG-2 encodes from Compressor inside of Toast for making blu-ray discs, but when I tried a test project I ran into some trouble. It multiplexed to 82% and then just stalled - it didn't even switch into encoding.
When I tried using only the first half of the file it multiplexed and wrote to disk image without a problem. It would appear that something in the encoding of one of the elementary streams Toast didn't like. I ran into the same issue inside of Adobe Encore when I tried to bring the streams in there.
I haven't had such issues using .264 files form Compressor. I'm not really sure what to make of it.

How do I determine correct media encoder settings for Blu-Ray

I am successfully producing Hi Def Blu-Ray disks by using one of the presets available in Premiere media encoder. Actually using the HDTV 1080i 25 High Quality setting. They playback in beautiful high definition but I think I was just lucky. I would really like to know what determines the setting I should use.
1. I live in Australia so I assume PAL.
2. My camera is a Sony HDV. HCR HC9 1440 x 1080i. I assume this is irrelevant to export encoding settings for Blu-Ray.
3. The export encoder preset has field order set to Upper. I would have thought I should either match the project settings which is interlaced to match my camera and project. OR more likely I should match the audience TV which would be a widesceen plama or LCD TV. I dont know if these TVs are interlaced or progressive. OR is it more a question of what field order the Blu-Ray player expects me to send on the disk?
4. I will play on a TV 1920 x 1080 pixel capable and on slightly lower resoultion widescreens. The encoder preset is for 1920 x 1080 so I assume that's ok for all widescreen TVs even lower definition ones.
As you can tell I am a learner. Any suggested links to basic reading on the subject would help me.

Since no response I've been searching and found the following.
When encoding to make a Blu-Ray disk from my HDV 1080i footage:
1. Tell encoder the source is 1080i That is interlaced and it's TOP field first for HDV footage.
2. Tell it to encode to 1440 x 1080 resolution. You could tell it 1920 x 1080 but it will take much longer to encode. Will be good but why bother. All BD players will automatically up the 1440 to 1902 full screen.
3. Beware, not all players support BD-R and BD-RE recordable disks.
Seems Panasonic is good. Samsung probably good. Sony and Sharp probably not able to read (yet).
4. All players read MPEG-2 compression and H264 compression. Use a bit rate of 25 Mbps for MPEG-2 encode or 18 Mbps for equivalent result in H264 encode. Can use higher rates. These are minimums for a very good result
5. One pass encode is pretty damn good but use two pass if you have the time to wait for the encode.

Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit,
RAM 12GB, 1800Hz
Core i7, 3,8GHz
Radeon HD 6900-RAM 2GB
Do anybody know why this happens?
It happens not only with PE 10, also happens with Cyberlink PowerProducer 5.5 .

The project settings were:

timebase: 25.00frames/sec
resolution: 1920x1080
screenformat: 25-fps-Timecode
Audio samplerrate 48000Hz
scrennformat: Audio-Samples
There are no red lines above the clips if I add them to my timeline.
I store the media and project files on a partition of primary SSD-drive.( AHCI-mode )
Do You need any further informations to identify the problem?

H.264 for Blu-Ray Encoding Time

Hi All,
I have exported a Pro-Res 1080p 2 hour film from FCPX and just dropped it into compressor. I have then dragged the default H.264 for Blu-Ray settings on my video and it looks like it will take way over three hours. I have a friend running Media Encoder and with the same file on his laptop it does it in 40min and it's a slower spec . I am running Compressor 4.1.3 and the latest MAC OS operating system. I have enabled additional instanced checked and the number 1 in the drop down (there are no other numbers)
Is there anything I am doing wrong, surely it can't be this slow, it's not even set to multipass.

ProRes to Blu-Ray H.264, then Preview problems in Encore CS5

Hello all,
I've been taking 90 minute or so ProRes 422 QuickTimes (29.97 interlaced) into Media Encoder CS 5 and creating H.264 Blu-Ray files for use in Encore CS5. I'm using the 1080i maximum quality setting and adjusting it so that target bitrate is 25mbps and max is 30. Also doing 2-pass VBR.
The issue I'm having is when I import these files into Encore CS5 and then preview them in a timeline they are artifacting all over the place. They look like my cable signal when it breaks up, except through the entire program. I've re-transcoded in the Media Encoder and am having the same issue. I've also tried transcoding within Encore (which is really the same thing), and still it persists. I haven't made a BD-R yet to check that and I know the preview in Encore CS 5 is very buggy. But I'm wondering -- has anyone run into this? Is this just a preview problem, or is there something actually wrong with the transcodes?
Also, if anyone has a tip for where I can open the *.m4v files coming out of Media Encoder so that I can check them somewhere other than in Encore that would be awesome. VLC player doesn't work, neither does QuickTime. Thanks everyone!

Thanks for the response. Here are the answers to your questions:
Some obvious but necessary checks:
Are you authoring in a Blu-ray project and not a DVD project? YES, it is a 1080i 29.97 Blu-Ray project.
Are you checking the transcode status column for Blu-ray and not DVD? Definitely looking at the transcode status for Blu-Ray, and not DVD.
If all is OK with those checks, then please check the audio:
Are the files multiplexed? If so, try elementary streams.
Are you using elementary streams? If so, try multiplexed.
On these notes -- what is a good way for me to know if the transcoded files are multiplexed or elementary? The interesting thing is that when I bring in the M4V and WAV files into Encore from what AME creates, the WAV file does NOT require transcoding, but the video file (M4V) does.
Regarding the preview issue I was having it's worth noting that when I checked back in preferences the playback quality was still set to DRAFT, as if when I switched it to HIGH it just didn't take (and I tried this more than once). I put it to HIGH again today and this time it seems it took, as preview playback quality is good again. Just seems strange to me that Encore has a mind of it's own sometimes with certain things.
I'm really more concerned with the transcoding at this point. I did a project a couple weeks back where I just bit the bullet and transcoded the M4V again in Encore to author the ISO file, and several chapters of the program came out stuttering on the disc. The original Quicktime source is fine and the preview playback on it was fine during those chapters. I can't seem to find a throughline for these problems -- just seems to happen every now and then and can't control it.
I authored a 53 minute 1080p 23.98 disc in early January that worked beautifully. Everything was great - no problems.

Is PrProCS3 able to encode H.264 Blu-ray file?

It seems I overestimated the capabilities of CS3. I have been unable to export a file to create a Blu-ray disc.
System specs:
2009 Mac Pro 4,1 3.33GHz Quad core
ATI Radeon HD 4870 512 (Apple)
16GB RAM
640GB HD for OS X 10.6.4, and all programs
3x 1TB HD in RAID 0 via Apple RAID card for data, scratch
LG WH10LS30 10x Super-Multi Blu-ray burner (kit for Mac Pro from OWC)
Adobe Production Premium CS3 (updated to 3.2.0 for Pr)
File specs:
DVCProHD P2 MXF footage, shot on Panasonic AG-HVX200P
1280x1080 29.97(24P), aspect ratio = 1.5
Project settings:
DVCProHD 1080i/1080p, 60Hz
23.976 frame rate, progressive scan
The project is 1 hour 32 minutes long, and I've tried Export to Encore, Export to AME and Export Movie to H.264 Blu-ray m4v, using the preset for 1080p High Quality 24p and 23.976fps. Codec is MainConcept H.264. The target bitrate is 25Mbps, Max 30Mbps. I've tried both Main and High profile. After I post this question, I'll be trying to change VBR to 1-pass, since it gets through the first pass during encoding every time, but crashes Pr during the second pass. It doesn't even make it to Encore... it just won't encode the export file, despite my attempts to follow all the rules.
I'm out of ideas. I don't want to give up and say Premiere Pro CS3 is worthless to me until I can confirm that as a fact. I purchased CS5, and it's sitting on my shelf awaiting installation, but I thought switching versions in the middle of a feature film edit was bad, so I've been holding off. However, if CS3 is unable to produce a Blu-ray copy, I might have to try that next.

I have cs3 but dont have a machine powerful enough to edit HD of any kind that is more than about maybe 20 min ...I have a PC.
It slows up a LOT if I have HD on my timeline and I add effects etc. That is why I haven't responded to your thread.
I have (approx ) a dual core 3ghz cpu and 4 gig ram, 2 hard drives with OS and programs on boot drive and projects on 2nd drive. I have no problems with SD video at all but HD is just NOT something I can do.
I suspect there may be some others using CS3 that also shun large HD projects simply due to the machines they have.
With the new 64bit OS and CS5, allowing PC users to actually "see" more than 4gig of ram, most HD users are now using new 64 bit OS and CS5....with a lot of ram and multiple cpu's and raid drive setups.
Although this doesnt help you out a lot re: your problem, at least it might explain a little bit why so few have responded yet...it's simply because I don't think that many cs3 ( 32 bit program ) users have done what you are trying to do.
Perhaps you could try exporting to encore for blue ray a very small segment of ONE timeline, and see if your hardware works OK with THAT... ?? Sorry I can't help more

Mpeg 2 for Blu-ray audio exports with missing frames at beginning and end.

Im using a Matrox Axio LE system and the Matrox Media encoder to export an Mpeg 2 for blue-ray. My footage is shot in 1280x720p 59.94 drop frame. I have found that after exporting the file from the encoder and bringing it into Encore CS3 that the audio that was exported is a little shorter than the video. Frames are missing at the end of the file.
Because of this my video and audio are way out of sync. Has anyone else come across this issue?

PAL Presets for Blu Ray

i have a project shot on the Sony EX1 at 1920 x 1080 p. I want to export using ADOBE MEDIA ENCODER to 1920 x 1080 progressive 25 FPS. Most options are for US standards, when I click PAL it only offers interlaced.
If 1920 x 1080 Progressive 25 fps is not possible for blu ray, what settings do you suggest?

1080p @ 25 fps is not part of the Blu-ray spec. Call Sony and complain.

Render settings for Blu-Ray in the UK

Hi all,
Bit of a newbie question regarding render settings for Blu-Ray. If I understand correctly, the uk frame rate is 25fps???? And we generally have 1080p TV's etc??? The Blu-ray presets in Media encoder don't offer this and the fact they don't makes me question if I'm not understanding the required settings correctly. ME does offer a 25fps preset but only in 1080i. So, my question is, what should I be rendering to, to then take the rendered file and author it to play on UK blu-ray players. Incidentaly, does anyone have any recommendations on authoring software. I just need to break it down into several seperate categories as well as being able to play the entire movie so the budget is minimal.

Hi, I'm using Mac Blu-rayRipper Pro and iMedia converter as well as Handbrake to get the highest quality transfer from my Blu-ray disks to iTunes and AppleTV. Each disk is a bit of a project as no two are the same in terms of the best method of conversion.

Batch transcoding for Blu-ray

Hello,
We have many short ~2 minute files with long filenames (so they can cleanly be used to form the chapter descriptions for the disc) organized into folders and, as mentioned in another thread, we are having difficulties preparing these files in advance for Blu-ray processing for Encore so they do not need to be transcoded when we select 4-5 to author a Blu-ray with. I tried to get around this by creating a massive project with all 500 of our files, using Encore CS6 to transcode all of them, then hoped Encore would know it transcoded that same asset in another project when we went to use 5 of those same files in another project. Unfortunately, not only did Encore not automatically detect that it had already transcoded the file for Blu-ray in another project, but when we went to manually locate the file, we saw that Encore truncated all our filenames to 20 characters in the Transcoded folder, followed by "_sessionA_blahbalhablh.m4v". Our filenames are not unique to 20 characters, so many filenames with A, B, C, D, etc suffixes were created and we have no way of telling what file is what. We can't even play the file to check, and we also can't compare the running length as Encore transcodes to elementary streams that can't be played back. Is there anyway to copy the transcoded asset knowledge from one project to the other so we can make use of the 3 days of compute time we appear to have wasted?
I've also looked into using Adobe Media Encoder to do this, but I think I'd need to take our files one folder at a time and run the transcode on them so they didn't get jumbled with the other files. I can't see a way to setup AME so that it handles recursive folders, and I also can't see a way of working with AME through command-line automation so that it can whir away and process one folder of 5-10 files at a time. All I can see is a way for it to turn out a similar output to our failure with getting Encore to transcode the files.
Any ideas on how we can batch-transcode for Blu-ray ahead of time instead of wait for Encore to transcode for every disc we build?

Encore is not long filename friendly, and will cause problems if you exceed an 80 character filename (Including spaces). Odd characters and in some cases excessive path depth can also be issues. The Encore authorcore (sonic based) is old, and just not modern filename friendly.
So I'd rethink the long filenames generally.
Ask your AME question in the AME forum. I do not know whether there is a good option for you or not.

Encore creates a folder structure for the project, and under the sources/transcodes/ folders, a folder for each asset that is transcoded. As soon as you create a new project, all that is gone, and with it encore's memory for it. You can import those files as assets, but I assume your point is that you can't tell what is what.
We can't even play the file to check, and we also can't compare the running length as Encore transcodes to elementary streams that can't be played back.
The elementary stream is an m2v. You can play these (e.g. with vlc player). But all that would be cumbersome.
Still thinking about this...

PE 7 Freezes while encoding AVCHD to Blu-Ray

As thte title states, I have a movie comprised mostly of AVCHD clips. It is a pretty big movie, at close to 3 hours, and I am having trouble encoding it to Blu-Ray. I have tried several things - increasing the RAM allocation to 3 GB, turning off the screensavers and power savers, turning off antivirus scanning, booting into Windows 7 64-bit with nothing but PE7 installed and trying to encode from there, etc. and it freezes up every time. The last time it got to 93% and froze. I'm at a loss at what to do next except just maybe wait until a new version of PE comes out.
I can even downconvert it to a regular DVD DL and it worked fine. At this point, I'm not sure what to do. Anyone else having this problem?
I am mainly using:
Win XP pro 32-bit
2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo
4 GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 7900GS
LG GBW-H20L Burner
Oh, and when it crashes, the RAM usage is only at about 40%, so I'm not running out, and there are no error messages - it just freezes.

Three hours of AVCHD (which is challenging to work with anyway) is probably too much to work with.
You don't say how much free, defragmented hard drive space you have but, unless it's a hundred or so gigabytes, that too could be a challenge.
I'd recommend doing a test run with 1 hour, or even half an hour, of video -- just to make sure everything is working.
But the fact that when you downconvert everything works fine seems to indicate that you've just overwhelmed your system.

Files or Folders needed for blu-ray disc missing !

I have Encore CS6. It successfully builds 'blu-ray folder' & 'blu-ray image' without any error. But when I try to create an iso image of the prepared folder using 'Ashampoo Burning Studio' it gives an error message saying that the folder doesn't contain all the files and folders needed for blu-ray. But when tried to do the same for DVD, there is no error. My blu-ray burning drive is broken and I want to check my finished project from my hard drive using Daemon's Tool and VLC or PowerDirector.
Could anybody advise how this can be fixed on Encore CS6. Encore CS5 never had this problem.

Which exact model of the AirPort Express do you have?
Did the Blu Ray player connect wirelessly to the Express before or has it never been able to connect to it at all?

Exporting MPEG2 files for Blu-ray from 720p60

I am exporting MPEG2 files for Blu-ray from 720p60 using compressor 3.05. I export straight from Final Cut 6 to compressor. It all looks great except I end up with some frames in the video that pixelate. It is just one frame, and the average viewer may not see it, but if you go frame by frame you see it. I thought it was just a bad export, but I exported the file again and the same thing happens again on the exact same frame. The fact that it happened again on the exact same frame was very odd to me. It is this way on five different video files. It's certainly not like that in the original on my timeline, so I don't know why it is doing that.
I guess I will try exporting a quicktime file first and then putting that file through compressor to see if that makes a difference. Any ideas from anybody?

Exporting a quicktime file first still produced the pixelated frame. I'm not sure what else to try.

Menus for Blu-Ray

Can one build chaptering menus that work in Blu-Ray with Encore? I normally have worked with Final Cut X but there is no way to build menus for the Blu-Ray DVD. Thanks

Sorry to explain so poorly. The timeline is the whole DVD. Within it are multiple chapter points to delineate segments of the information. Than, using the Mpeg2 compression file in Apple's DVD Pro, I build the menus with buttons which relate to the chapter points. However, if I select. The compression protocol for Blu-Ray, it seems as tho I cannot make menus which are functional on the Blu-Ray disc.
Another gentleman has answered saying there are many available menus in Encore which can be used for a Blu-Ray disc. I got Adobe Premier's trial. Am assuming that is different than Encore.
