Encoding settings on Imovie...Help please!

I wonder if someone can help. I have made a video for the school that is 4.2 GB heavy, dvd is 4.7 GB and iMovie says it's too big to burn. It tells me to change encoding settings but I don't want to loose quality. Has anyone got any suggestions please? Will changing to High quality or professional quality affect the quality of the DVD? Short version:
Best Performance is for videos of up to 60 minutes
Best Quality is for videos of up to 120 minutes
Professional Quality is also for up to 120 minutes but even higher quality (and takes much longer)
That was for single-layer DVDs. Double these numbers for dual-layer DVDs.
Professional Quality: The Professional Quality option uses advanced two-pass technology to encode your video (The first pass determines which parts of the movie can be given greater compresson without quality loss and which parts can’t. The second pass then encodes those different parts accordingly) , resulting in the best quality of video possible on your burned DVD. You can select this option regardless of your project’s duration (up to 2 hours of video for a single-layer disc and 4 hours for a double-layer disc). Because Professional Quality encoding is time-consuming (requiring about twice as much time to encode a project as the High Quality option, for example) choose it only if you are not concerned about the time taken.
In both cases the maximum length includes titles, transitions and effects etc. Allow about 15 minutes for these.
You can use the amount of video in your project as a rough determination of which method to choose. If your project has an hour or less of video (for a single-layer disc), choose Best Performance. If it has between 1 and 2 hours of video (for a single-layer disc), choose High Quality. If you want the best possible encoding quality for projects that are up to 2 hours (for a single-layer disc), choose Professional Quality. This option takes about twice as long as the High Quality option, so select it only if time is not an issue for you.
Use the Capacity meter in the Project Info window (choose Project > Project Info) to determine how many minutes of video your project contains.
NOTE: With the Best Performance setting, you can turn background encoding off by choosing Advanced > “Encode in Background.” The checkmark is removed to show it’s no longer selected. Turning off background encoding can help performance if your system seems sluggish.
And whilst checking these settings in iDVD Preferences, make sure that the settings for NTSC/PAL and DV/DV Widescreen are also what you want.

Sound problem with QuickTime .dv files exported from iMovie ~ help please

I have been working for ages on an important project which is intended to wind-up as a numbered edition DVD, limited to 50 copies.
When I worked in iMovie HD 5 this NEW PROBLEM didn't arise: I did what I thought was the right thing and bought iLife '06, then upgraded from the Apple site, so now I am using iMovie HD 6.0.1, iDVD 6.0.1 and QuickTime Player 7.0.4.
I've designed my own menus and the procedure as most anyone will know [thanks iCreate magazine!] is...you have to 'export' (or now 'share') the iMovie to QuickTime (or with QuickTime) which produces a .dv file which you then drag-and-drop into iDVD.
I've got 4 of these .dv files for the start-up and some menus.
THE PROBLEM IS whereas the sound (it's actually music) has been faded out (in synch with the image) ~ in iMovie everything seems fine ~ but THE QUICKTIME .dv FILES HAVE AN ANNOYING LITTLE "FLARE-UP" OF MUSIC AT THE END OF THEM.
Imported into iDVD, in preview: sure enough! ~ you hear the annoying, untidy-sounding snips at the end.
It's ruining my project ~ please help, someone!

I am having the exact problem, it's a real show stopper.
I have tested hardware, software, media as below.
Tested on
1 Intel 17inch iMac
2 G4 AGP 450 + 1.2Ghz Model
Each have a fresh install of iLife 06 on
Each have been tested with different project files.
Differnet music files
The issue seems to be with apples iLife software to me.
I am on the phone to apple right now, they only surgest I create a new user as it generates new prefs, but the above test has already rulled out preference files!
Also rebuilding and reinstalling, but again the above test has rulled that out as the 3 machines were freshly built.
I have already upgraded my graphics card in my machine at home to sort out preview problems with iMovie, hopefully it's not going to be an expensive audio card aswell.
If any 1 can throw any light on this please do as apple support can't.

User Settings Suddenly Missing - Help Please

I have an iMac G5 Rev B running 10.4.2. Yesterday, everything was running fine. I only did some Web surfing and e-mail, didn't install anything. I quit the open programs, logged out, then shut-down the system last night. This morning, it came up okay. I logged into my admin user account, the only account on this system, and noticed my wallpaper had been reset to the system default. Also, the dock was not as I had set it. I reset the wallpaper photo and dock settings, then started Mail. Mail came up as if it had not been run before, wanting to run through the set-up proceedure. I quit it, and began to wonder what had happened. I checked Dashboard, and it only had the default widgets installed, none of the others I've installed in the past.
I've searched the forum, but haven't found a solution yet. I've run MacJanitor and have repaired disk permissions. I've restarted in Safe Mode, but still have the problem. I am not running File Vault. As far as I can tell, I have not changed the name of the home folder (I certainly didn't try to at any time). I only see my home folder and the Shared folder under Users.
I've been using Macs for a few years now, but am still new to troubleshooting them. Not sure what to do. I'm of course hoping to recover my user account and data. I can see the iPhoto and iTunes libraries, but not sure I can see Mail's local mail file, or Safari's bookmarks.
Any advice and guidance will be greatly appreciated!

To clarify a bit, I haven't opened iPhoto or iTunes, but can see the data files in Finder. The Mail and Safari data files seem to be missing. I opened Safari for the first time to respond to your post (originally posted my support query from my work PC), and as I suspected, my bookmarks are missing. It's as if I'm in a new user account. Very strange indeed! I'm hopeful the good folks here can help me resolve this problem and regain control of my user account and data.

Sequence settings and export help please

It's been awhile since I've made a movie for dvd, and the last time was in PAL, so my settings are changed.
Now I'm making an NTSC dvd (Best quality possible) for a local historical group, and can't remember the settings!!
Using FCP 5
A Canon Elura 80 videocam, not HD, just ordinary DV.
I captured the video in iMovie and imported into FCP
Created 2 movies: one 4:3, and one 16:9 (filmed it in this format)
1. What 'export movie' settings do I need? Should I export as a QT movie, use DV Stream, or ?
I want to use iDVD to make the dvd, and I'd like it the best quality possible
2. Also, my 'sequence presets' seem different. They're Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) 1280x720 30p 48 kHz. IS this what they should be?
(And I'm far from being a pro,, I just like to have better control than iMovie gives me; i'ld just like to set my settings and leave them for everything i do .... or at least know what they all mean so I can make a decision which to use

I captured the video in iMovie and imported into FCP
Bad step there ... you should capture in the NLE you plan to use for editing. FWIW, iMovie captures DV different than FCE or FCP. You my have lost so quality there, but it depends on which version of iMovie you used.

File->Export->QuickTime Movie. Do NOT recompress all frames, but do include chapter markers (if needed). You can make the movie self-contained or not. Drop the resulting file into iDVD.

IPad/iMovie help please!

Hey there...I have the "New iPad and have recently downloaded the app iMovie and iPhoto in hopes of putting together a slide show for my daughter's 13th birthday. That being said, I have about 50 pictures that I selected, fixed to fit the screen and they worked perfectly and I was able to preview the slide show with no issues. Today when I started to add a few more pictures all the pictures seemed to overlap and the ones that I had fixed as far as how long I wanted them to show on screen changed to a much longer period (meaning that one picture would show for a very long time). In addition when I tried to preview the show it was a blank screen. you could see it was moving, however, everything was black. Does anyone have any ideas for me?
One more question...as I am new to this, do you think I am really chancing trying to put this on my PC so I can show it at the ice skating rink or is there a way to hook my iPad up to the projector at the rink?

If you are having issues transferring your project to your Camera Roll, you may want to try transferring it to iTunes on your computer, then transferring it back. This will also give you an opportunity to back up the file, should anything happen to it during further troubleshooting on your iPad. You may find the following article helpful:

IMovie help please?

Hi,
Downloaded iMovie and having trouble with the holiday theme. It is supposed to dot your geographical location but the closest it can get to the West Midlands is Manchester! This is terrible. I live a long long way away from Manchester and it doesn't have Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire or the West Mids in its location directory! Is this something I am doing wrong??

thanks, except the help article on the support site is incorrect.
It ztates that you can insert a custom location by clicking the "other" buttong, but this isnt true. If you type in a place that is not in the directory then it will not allow you to add it and I don't understand why it's having a problem with this. My location is found easily enough with google maps, yet to the iMovie app, I live 60 miles away!

Need iMovie Help, Please

My DH has a Hitachi Hybrid Camcorder DVD/HDD and I'm the lucky one who needs to deal with getting the movies from both HDD and the mini DVD onto a normal size DVD. I've hooked to the computer with the usb cable supplied with the camera. The HDD dics icon shows on the computer but I can't import into imovie. And, iMovie doesn't open automatically. And when I manually open iMovie, the HDD disc shows but when I click it nothing happens. (Please explain in simple terms) TIA

I suspect that the Hitachi Hybrid's hard drive records in the same format as its DVD recording format - MPEG 2. That's why I posted Appleman1958's tip - it's relevant to both the hard drive and DVD. Sorry, but your post was a bit confusing as it mentioned both recording methods! I wasn't clear on what you wanted to import from.
My understanding is that, for iMovie to be able to import MPEG 2, it must first be converted to a suitable format for editing. Hence the use of the tools mentioned by Appleman.

PS Sorry about the reference to mini DVD's. People have been known to insert them into DVD slots, but didn't wish to imply that you were stupid

Frustrations of iMovie-Help please

1st: I am trying to export video to Final Cut Express, the XML files that I save to my desktop aren't being accepted by Final Cut. I try to import files to Final express but there is an error when I try that.
Second: When I save movies, I have saved them in XML (which is not accepted) & Quicktime, Quicktime seems to b accepted but I want the videos in the same chopped form that I got them from the vid cam. How do I get that?
Third, how do I get SMV4 files to work with either program? (iMovie or Final Cut)
Does Final Cut not take video straight from camera?

Your Canon records in AVCHD format.
If you have an Intel-based iMac, then your Mac should be able to read - and transcode - the Canon HG10's AVCHD-format video files straight from the camera and turn them into editable 'Apple Intermediate Codec' files, which both Final Cut Express and Final Cut pro can read ..they also read .mov, and FCP reads many other video formats too.
The conversion from AVCHD to AIC is necessary because your Canon records in a compressed format which isn't editable until the compressed frames are recreated in AIC.
"..the XML files that I save to my desktop aren't being accepted.." ..well that's because XML isn't a video codec ..you may have an XML list of edits (..like an 'EDL' ..Edit Decision List..) but XML isn't video; it's text, as I understand it. Maybe Final Cut could read your EDL if you tell Final Cut where to find the actual video files which iMovie has imported.
"..I want the videos in the same chopped form that I got them from the vid cam.." ..well they won't be in the exact same format, as those are compressed and uneditable: they'll be in AIC format - or can be exported as .mov QuickTime files - in the Events folder in your Movies folder on your Mac.

Premiere Pro CS6 Generates HUGE file - Encoder settings help please

Using PPCS6 to create a 6 minute AVI file. The source video is an AVI screen capture from Camtasia for an application that is spread across 3 widescreen monitors, making the screen/video resolution 5760x1200 with a frame rate of 30. I need to output the same resolution/aspect ratio (Camtasia will not do this, hence my use of Premiere).
The initial screen capture is just under 2GB.
The AVI output from Media encoder is 45GB which is just too big to use.
Is there some settings I can use that will create a file of approximately the same size (under 3GB) and still look as sharp as the original capture?
My current encoder settings are:
Codec: Microsoft Video 1
Quality: 90
Width: 5760
Height: 1200
Frame Rate: 30
Field Order: Lower First
Aspect: Square Pixels (1.0)
Depth: 8-bit
Keyframe Interval: 8
Optimize Stills checked.

Camtasia files use their own TechSmith codec (TSCC) which is highly optimized for screen captures where hardly anything changes from frame to frame, and realistically you can't beat it with any of the default codecs, which are designed for full-motion video. With MV1 that file size is about what I'd expect from such a massive resolution. Also, do you really need 30fps? Most screencaps will look OK at 15 or even 12 at a push.
You should be able to encode back to AVI/TSCC if you have Camtasia on the same machine as Prem, if not you can download the codec pack for free from Techsmith's website.

At the end of my IMovie I want to write some text: as in" Happy Birthday Mandy we had a great time with you. etc.. How do I go about this? Which icon in IMovie lets me have a place to write text?? help please

You can choose a background for the text from Maps and Backgrounds. Just drag a background to the end of the timeline, adjust to desired duration then drag title above it.

If you are using Safari as a web browser :-
Open Safari, go to Safari menu > Preferences > General, and put Google as the homepage. Then, choose Google as your default search engine.
If you are using Google Chrome as the web browser :-
Open Google Chrome.
In the top right corner of the page, click the Chrome menu Chrome menu > Settings.
In the "Search" section, select Google from the drop-down menu.

Can't Left Click in Flash Player Settings Panel - HELP PLEASE

Hi and thanks for taking the time to read this. Believe me it is a fraction of the time I have wasted trying to resolve this issue.
Basic problem is:
I am trying to stream to Ustream but since downloading AFP11 for my Windows PC when I open the Flash Player Settings panel i can't left click on anything. It is set to deny but I can't click allow, or close or any of the icons.
Right click does work.
I have followed countless instructions in other forums from other posts that have encountered the problem on Mac and older versions of AFP but as yet none of the solutions have proven succesul.
I have tried all of the following but nothing has resolved the problem.
1. Uninstall and reinstall Adobe Flash Player (although this is impossible using Google Chrome) and restart computer.
2. Unistall flash and install older version. (made no difference on Google Chrome and on IE8 had no flash whatsoever).
5. Uninstall older AFP and reinstall AFP11.
4. Uninstall Google Chrome and restart computer.
5. Uninstall QuickTime (I got this off http://www.techsupportforum.com/forums/f10/flash-player-not-working-properly-please-help-1 61552.html) and restart computer
6. Last resort use keyboard shortcuts such as tab, enter and ctrl+arrows. This either didn't highlight the panel at all or if it did I still couln't select allow, or close the panel itself so was no help either.
So now I'm back to square one.
Now here's a really bizarre thing... I am using a shared laptop computer and if I use my colleagues profile where she hasn't updated her AFP to Adobe Flash Player 11 the settings panel is responding just fine. IT'S THE SAME PC!
I know I am alone with this problem but someone out there has an answer. If you can help please let me know how to fix this problem where I can't left click in the Adobe Flash Player settings panel.and I will be eternily grateful.

OK the amount I hate myself right now is more than a fat guy's self loathing for raiding the fridge at 2am for Pizza but less than an armed robber who's accidentally shot a pregnant woman in the stomach during a shootout. but not much less.
So after I had miraculously got the Flash Player Setting Panel to work again, (after deleting QuickTime and leaving the window open for abut an hour it just started working again) I then got enticed into downloading the ustream producer software.
While downloading it informed me that it would only work with QuickTime.
Stupidly and Optimistically hoping it would remove the need to use flash player altogether I downloaded and installed both.
I then discovered to my horror that Ustream producer is not a patch on Vidbalster and that it was not capable of delivering the same level of broadcast.
I then opened the flash player settings panel on ustream and... the problem has returned!
This means I am 99% sure that QuickTime IS the cause of the problem so I have uninstalled QT off the PC. I have also uninstalled Ustream Producer.
The thing is though, now no matter how many times I restart, or uninstall and reinstall Adobe, or Google Chrome, I am once again UNABLE TO LEFT CLICK IN THE FLASH PLAYER SETTINGS PANEL. AAAARRRRRGGGGHHHH!!!!
What did I do? I fixed it and f***ing broke it again!
Now it properly will not come back to life! the problem is not solved and i urgently need help.
Why does Adobe Flash Player Settings Panel and Apple QuickTime hate each other so much that they've got to ruin my life?
