Encoding to high profile h.264 with quicktime (7 pro) export

Is there anyway to encode high profile h264 with quicktime export ?
Been using a canon HF100 for years now, and my goal is to edit and export my movies to h264 with the least quality lost. I can edit(trimming and merging) without quality loss. My endresult is in AIC codec, but when I export it to H264 in quicktime, in the highest settings, I can still see quality(or actually, color depth) loss in low light scenes.
Even with a bitrate which is almost identical to the AIC file...
I have a 130.2Mb (52.7Mbps) h264 main@Level 5 with 2 reference frames/second clip that looks worse the the original AIC file(56.9Mbps) of 143.8Mb
The canon HF100 records in high profile at level 4.0 (high@L4) with 17Mbps. It does 2 reference frames per second and CABAC.
So in theory exporting my projects at 17Mbps should be enough, if only the right settings where available in quicktime export.
Is there anyway to convert AIC to High profile settings, CABAC(available in main profile but not used bij quicktime in h264 output) on the MAC ?
My workflow:
1. I use shedworx VoltaicHD to convert my AVCHD files to AIC (pretty much lossles)
2. I use Imovie 6 to create a new Project in the following structure: HDV1080i
3. I don't import the AIC files with iMovie but I dump them with Finder in the "media" folder of the Imovie project.(This way I can maintain the 1920x1080 resolution, with importing it gets 1440x1080)
4. Then I open the project in Imovie, open the trashcan and see my movie clips.
5. Then the trimming, cutting and merging begins, no use of effects(adding effects creates 1440x1080 video)
6. Time for export with quicktime h264 codec.

Hi MartinR,
Some answers on your thoughts:
"You have an AVCHD camcorder. Where did you get the technical information that it records HiProfile/Level 4/2 ref frames per sec/CABAC?"
-I'v dropped some original mts files from my camera on a program called "mediainfo" from sourceforge net.
"VoltaicHD's conversion isn't exactly 1920x1080, either. Open one of your AIC files in QT Player, do Window > Show Movie Inspector and tell us what it says for format and fps. 1440x1080? 1888x1062?"
-Both mediainfo and quicktime (7 pro and the new quicktime) show in their info that the movie format from voltaicHD file is 1920x1080.
But I can remember I've seen the 1888x1062 resolution in the info in the past. Maybe things where changed by a new version of voltaic or an update by quicktime ?
" certainly understand your efforts to get the results you want with what you have on hand. However you will be better off with iMovie11 and/or Final Cut Express 4 or Final Cut Studio 6. FCP 6 by the way supports ProRes which, if you are very driven for the highest technical qualities, would be the way to go."
I thought about buying imovie 11 in the app store. For 11,99 euro's it's a bargain!
But a little search on the forums kept me from buying it.
My camera puts out interlaced files, even when I record progressive. This is done by most camera manufacturers for compatibility on blu ray players and older lcd and plasma tv's.
Now it seems that if you use effects in imovie 11, it drops half the fields, resulting in 960x540 resolution...In that case imovie 6 with 1440x1080 supported effects is still better.
The same 1440x1080 limitations seems to exist in Final cut express 4.
I know the backdoor in imvie06 works, you can see the 1920 to 1440 resolution drop with your own eyes when effects are added. The drop is only visible in the frames that contain a special effect, the rest of the exported movie is untouched and still 1920.
I did some thinking, and what bothers me the most is that exporting the movie results in loss of color depth/detail. I could imagine that if I could use Prores422 instead of AIC, which is only available in FCP (999Euro's!). That the end result is better, but I'm not sure.
Could be that the colors of the original movie file are spread more over the range because it supports 10 bit sample depth instead of 8. Even when that is true, I am not sure if the h.264 codec will tread it different and maintains some more color depth.
And for fact the avchd files are 4:2:0 and not 4:2:2.
Do you or anyone know if there is any different in quality in an exported to h.264 pro resolution file or an AIC file. Even when the source is 8 bit 4:2:0 ?

  • High Profile H.264 FC6?

    Hello
Vimeo recommends using 'High Profile' H.264, (instead of the normal drop down H.264), for HD. But there is no so-called 'High Profile' H.264 in FC6.
    Are there other options?
If so, can someone please state them for me?
    Thank you

    Hello Ian
    How are you?
Yes, I'm aware of the importance of the Data Rate. In fact, for HD, Vimeo recommends 10K to 20K.
    https://vimeo.com/help/compression
Needless to say, this post ties into my other one regarding 'workarounds' with limited equipment; using only a Mac Mini 10.6, and ClipWrap to get AVCHD files converted to QT - Only to find out that FC6 does not have 'High Profile' H.264, which came out with FC7.
And with the extra burden of HUGH render times evident with older G5's, FC6 and these converted AVCHD files, its back to reality. If my friend picks up a nice used Mac Pro intell Desktop and de-activated FC7 on Ebay, he should be in the 'Pink' .
Nice to see you again Ian

With Quicktime 7 Pro for Windows, is there a plug-in or add-on to have the screen recording capability?

Screen recording is not a feature of QuickTime Player 7 Pro (Mac or Windows).
QuickTime X (ten) is Mac only software that does include screen recording features.

  • Quicktime 7 Pro Export problem in Snow Leopard

    Hello.
I always use the QuickTime 7 Pro Export feature, but ever since I've upgraded to Mac OS X Snow Leopard (10.6.0), whenever I hit Command+E or click "Export..." from the File menu, QuickTime will just quit with no warning. No CrashReporter will open, nothing. It does this with every movie. Has anybody else had this same problem? Is it as easy as reinstalling QuickTime?
    Thanks in advance.
    -Ben

I Leopard I used QT7 to export .avi files with .srt subtitle files to AppleTV. It worked slowly, but perfectly. Now in Snow Leopard I tried to do the same, the result is a file with subtitles over black video. (not with the new QTX nor with the old QT7 left behind in Utilities)
This situation is so frustrating! it has nothing to do with mac! this is so Windows! How come the new QT o System environment limits you in this freaking way? I want my Leopard back. I could live without every new feature in Snow Leopard, but I can´t live without my old Quicktime 7.

  • Quicktime 7 pro export h.264 better than iMovie quicktime setting?

Hi, wondering if anybody knows if Quicktime 7 pro will export h.264 files (mp4) with better quality than going thru iMovie 11 and using the Quicktime plugin? The results are ok with iMovie but wondering if Quicktime 7 Pro would export better as a standalone unit? Looking to make super small files from chopped up dvd's that will play on all mobile devices..Been using baseline profile setting in iMovie Quicktime plugin so it plays on iPhone 3g as well..  Thanks everyone!

I am trying to create very small files from a DVD , just simple chopping the DVD up into sections...when I use Handbrake to rip the DVD to a small h.264 (mp4) file the quality is surprisingly good...if I rip a higher quality mp4 to use in iMovie the export to smaller h.264 files don't look nearly as good when trying to get files sizes equivalent to Handbrake...I have tried ripping the highest quality video from DVD to use in iMovie '11 but when trying to export using QuickTime plugin to get h.264 (mp4) files they don't look that good...basically if Handbrake had editing capabilities the chopped up files would look better from there...
You are experiencing a process of diminishing returns by continuously re-compressing the video from less efficient codecs to more efficient/same efficiency codecs at the same or lower data rates which tends to degrade quality with each re-compression. My recommendation would be to purchase the Apple QT MPEG-2 Playback component ($20) and use it with MPEG Streamclip for your work flow. (Note: If you are using Lion, the component installer won't work correctly and you will either have the use the Squared-5 beta utility to install the package or install the codec manually.)
A better work flow would be to load the DVD titles (VOB file data) to MPEG Streamclip and edit the content there in its native MPEG-2/AC3 or MPEG-2/PCM compression format. You can set in/out points the same as using QT 7 Pro and save the segments as separate files using an alpha-numeric filename convention denoting the order in which you later want to merge the segments. Once all segments are saved, just drop all of them simultaneously back to the MPEG Streamclip work window and they will be merged in the proper alpha-numeric order. You can then fix "timecode breaks" and export the final product to your targeted compression format. Since you only re-compress the project once, depending on the codec/settings you use, your final file should approach the quality achieved in HandBrake. I.e., this is the main benefit of editing in the original "native" codec used in the DVD content.

  • Export multichannel mp4/h.264 with Adobe Premiere Pro CC

    Dear community,
we currently test the Adobe Premiere Pro CC trial (German) on a Windows 7 Professional PC.
However, we are not succentful in exporting a multichannel mp4/H.264 clip.
We haven't found an answer on our issue so far, so I hope that this question was not answered several times before in this forum.
If we chosse the H.264 exporter, we cannot select a multichannel audio export (only mono, stereo, 5.1).
In contrary, if we select the Quicktime exporter, we are able to export our sequence with a 4 channel audio master with 4 mono tracks, but we can only export it with a DVCPro Codec in a mov container.
If we try to select a HD H.264 preset we get an error alert stating that the preset contains a not compatible video codec.
    What are we doing wrong?
    Thanks for every suggestion.
    Thanks in advance
    André

    Thanks for your thoughts, Richard.
Your are right, we currentky use the Adobe Premiere Creative Cloud version.
We managed it to solve at least the error message. It was caused because Quicktime was not installed together with the Adobe Premiere Pro / AME setup on our computer.
After we installed Quicktime 7 manually, we can select a Quicktime/H.264 preset without any problems within the exporter settings.
However, the Quicktime/H.264 export dialog seems to only allow a mono or stereo audio export. No multichannel-audio export.
This possibility is only displayed in Richards case, if we select the Quicktime exporter and an Uncompressed Video or DV preset.
Our question to the Adobe developer guys is the reason behind this limition? Other video authoring prograns can export a mp4 with H.264 Codec with multichannel AAC without any problems.
How can we do this with Adobe Premiere Pro (not necessarily via Quicktime)?

  • Ingested videos not playing in stereo with Quicktime or after exporting with compressor

Why does it seem like every time I try to do something just mildly complex I'm stymied by some bug or problem with the software?
    Here's the deal:
    0) I have footage was shot with a stereo camcorder, a JVC GR-DV3000 (circa 2003), with built-in stereo mics.
    1) I ingest the footage from the Mini DV tape and save it to a camera archive using Final Cut Pro X (latest version).
    2) I use Final Cut Pro to pull the events out of archive.
    3) When the events are played from within Final Cut Pro X, I hear strereo and audio meters indicate the audio is in stereo (left and right channels have different volume levels).
    4) When the events are played with the open source software, VLC, I hear stereo, too.
    5) When I export the files for playing on an Apple device using Final Cut Pro, the audio is in stereo as you would expect.
    BUT:
    5) When I play the event clips with QuickTime from my hard drive after step 2 above, I get no audio from the right channel. Weird, right?
    But most annoying of all:
    6) When I use Compressor 4 (instead of Final Cut) to output the event clips to "SD for Apple Devices" using the default audio settings, I get no audio from the right channel, either.
    7) I've got hundreds, if not thousands, of clips. I'm not about to save each clip manually with FCPX. I need to batch convert these files with Compressor.
    8) I've tried various combinations of the audio import settings ("Analyze and fix audio problems," "Separate mono and group stereo audio," and "Remove silent channels." These options have not solved the issue for me. The clips still play in mono in QuickTime.
When I look at the properties of the file in QuickTime, here's what it shows:
    DV/DVCPRO - NTSC, 720 x 480 (640 x 480)
Linear PCM, 16 bit little-endian signed integer, 32000 Hz, Left
Linear PCM, 16 bit little-endian signed integer, 32000 Hz, Unused
Linear PCM, 16 bit little-endian signed integer, 32000 Hz, Unused
Linear PCM, 16 bit little-endian signed integer, 32000 Hz, Unused
Why it's telling me the other 3 channels are unused, I have no idea. As I mentioned, the footage was shot in stereo and even Final Cut plays it in stereo.
Here's what VLC says about the very same file:
    Stream 0:
    Type: Audio
    Codec:PCM S16 LE (sowt)
    Channels: Mono
    Sample Rate: 32000 Hz
    Bits per sample: 16
    Stream 1:
    Type: Audio
    Codec:PCM S16 LE (sowt)
    Channels: 1
    Sample Rate: 32000 Hz
    Bitrate: 512 kb/s
    Stream 2:
    Type: Audio
    Codec:PCM S16 LE (sowt)
    Channels: 1
    Sample Rate: 32000 Hz
    Bitrate: 512 kb/s
    Stream 3:
    Type: Audio
    Codec:PCM S16 LE (sowt)
    Channels: 1
    Sample Rate: 32000 Hz
    Bitrate: 512 kb/s
    Stream 4:
    Type: Video
    Codec: (DV Video (dvc)
    Resolution: 720 x 480
    Frame Rate: 29.970030
    Decoded Format: Planar 4:1:1 YUV
If anyone can point in the right direction, I'd much appreciate it.

I ended up just using iMovie to capture video from the camera. The clips now play in stereo in QuickTime perfectly.
It's interesting to note that iMovie saves the clips as .dv file types, not .mov file types like FCPX does.
And it turns out the iMovie capture is *much* smoother. It actually "just works." Ingesting tapes with FCPX, I had to cross my fingers, spin on my head and pray three times to a statue of Steve Jobs before it would work (and even then it would do weird stuff).
The only downside of using iMovie is that it doesn't have the camera archive feature.
I really don't understand why, with $120 billion in the bank, Apple seems to be churning out software as an afterthought. No, software is not where they make their money, but they are ruining their reputation. Ah, well, first world problems.

  • Sound problem with QuickTime .dv files exported from iMovie ~ help please

    Hi
I have been working for ages on an important project which is intended to wind-up as a numbered edition DVD, limited to 50 copies.
When I worked in iMovie HD 5 this NEW PROBLEM didn't arise: I did what I thought was the right thing and bought iLife '06, then upgraded from the Apple site, so now I am using iMovie HD 6.0.1, iDVD 6.0.1 and QuickTime Player 7.0.4.
I've designed my own menus and the procedure as most anyone will know [thanks iCreate magazine!] is...you have to 'export' (or now 'share') the iMovie to QuickTime (or with QuickTime) which produces a .dv file which you then drag-and-drop into iDVD.
I've got 4 of these .dv files for the start-up and some menus.
THE PROBLEM IS whereas the sound (it's actually music) has been faded out (in synch with the image) ~ in iMovie everything seems fine ~ but THE QUICKTIME .dv FILES HAVE AN ANNOYING LITTLE "FLARE-UP" OF MUSIC AT THE END OF THEM.
Imported into iDVD, in preview: sure enough! ~ you hear the annoying, untidy-sounding snips at the end.
It's ruining my project ~ please help, someone!

I am having the exact problem, it's a real show stopper.
I have tested hardware, software, media as below.
    Tested on
    1 Intel 17inch iMac
    2 G4 AGP 450 + 1.2Ghz Model
Each have a fresh install of iLife 06 on
Each have been tested with different project files.
    Differnet music files
The issue seems to be with apples iLife software to me.
I am on the phone to apple right now, they only surgest I create a new user as it generates new prefs, but the above test has already rulled out preference files!
Also rebuilding and reinstalling, but again the above test has rulled that out as the 3 machines were freshly built.
I have already upgraded my graphics card in my machine at home to sort out preview problems with iMovie, hopefully it's not going to be an expensive audio card aswell.
If any 1 can throw any light on this please do as apple support can't.
    Regards
    Paul

  • Partial streaming with quicktime 7 pro

When a file is clicked (such as a trailer), the file only goes 11 seconds and halts. The cache is turned way up, to higher than the file size (124mb) and no selection is available to download or save the file. Is there an option in quicktime that I am missing that will allow the entire file to finish streaming? I am on a 1mb/sec line on an college LAN, so connection is not a problem, and i have 1gb of RAM.

Most of the trailers "download" over HTTP servers and are not "streamed" using RTSP servers.
The settings you adjusted in the QT Control Panel allow you to set the "cache" size and your connection speed. You seem to have them correct so I suspect a problem with the file.
Try a smaller file sized trailer. If one works they all should work.
Some files require a very fast computer and a newer (better) video card. If your computer doesn't meet the requirements for HD trailers you will not be able to view them.

  • Logic Studio comes with quicktime 7 Pro.   where is it?

as the box indicates in the "contents" section beside the requirements section in the top side of the box, it gives the list of all the softwares that come with logic studio (e.i. logic pro, soundtrack pro2, waveburner, compressor... blah blah blah all that... but it says close to the end: quicktime PRO 2, which i guess is a "better" version, or it has more features... i dont know. the thing is i dont quite see that i actually have it installed on my mac. when i open quicktime and check on the "about quicktime.." it says its only quicktime.. but doesnt say anything about being PRO 2. its also the 7.5.5 version...
Since i installed everything from logic studio.. and still cant seem to find a way to see that QT pro 2 has been installed on my mac, can anyone explain to me what could be happening?
    thanks.

This has had a lot of people confused. Logic doesn't actually come with any software for Quicktime Pro, because you already have it imbedded into the regular version of Quicktime. When you buy QTP, or buy something like Logic that includes it, it simply 'unlocks' your regular version of Quicktime, which allows you access to a bunch of features that regular Quicktime didn't have.
Open System Preferences->Quicktime, and it should say: 'Registered To: Apple Pro Apps User' and 'Registration Code: Automatic.' You'll also notice that the 'Q' graphic on that window has a little 'PRO' tag on it too.
If you were still running the regular Quicktime, when you went to the QT Player, and dropped down any of the menus from the menubar, most of the options would be grayed out and say 'Pro Only,' or something like that. Now all of the options in those menus will be available.
And yes, it should be version 7.5.5.

  • Play files out of a firewire port with Quicktime 7 pro?

Does anyone know if this is possible?
I playback preview files (mov,dv, etc) on quicktime pro all the time, and it would be helpful if I could view them on my plasma via my firewire port (the same way I do in Logic or Pro Tools).

I don't 100% understand what you are asking - your firewire port on your mac or on an external drive?
I am playing .mov files from a MacMini to a Panasonic 65 inch plasma via DVI cable... The plasma is working basically as a HUUUGE computer monitor. Not a direct answer to your question, but I know DVI directly from your Mac to the Plasma (provided the plasma has DVI in) works if you need an alternative. If the plasma only has VGA in, you can get less quality, but still success with the DVI-RGB converter from your mac to the plasma.
