Encoding (video artifacts)

I'm having trouble with artifacts in the video I import into idvd 6. I am editing HDV in Final Cut Pro 5 and have been exporting my video as a Quicktime Movie. I have also tried using Quicktime conversion, and various codecs but no matter what I do, there are severe artifacts any time there is movement in the video (plays just fine as a Quicktime file though, I only see the artifats in iDVD.
Would appreciate any help!

Hi
Karsten pointed at one important factor NTSC or PAL and keeping the
same setting the whole project trough.
I wonder about - How much free space there is on Your internal hard disk ?
Should be > than 20Gb. Less than 10Gb can give various strange behaviour
like extreme long coding-times and I got some DVDs with strange quality
reductions.

  • H.264 export video artifacts with regular background pattern

I'm generally very pleased with the flexibility and quality of the H.264 video encoder provided by Premiere Pro.
However, I have one scene, with a graph-paper-like background that generates video artifacts when zooming in and out, no matter how high I set the bitrate.
I'm including two images created by grabbing frames from the exported movie from Quick Time Player.  The first shows the scene without artifacts (at the end when the
zooming is over) while the second shows the effect when I'm zooming in on the scene.  As you can see, the artifacts consist of graying out of the black lines and appearance of some "tick" lines along the lines, which I assume is due to the compression algorithm used by the codec.   Does anyone have experience with such problems and can suggest a way to avoid this? It's a relatively short segment of the video that is effected.
    Thanks in advance!

Hmmm... the second file ppVideoArtifactOn.jpg appears by name in the original posting after the first, visible image.  I'm not sure why it's not showing up, but I'll include it here again:

  • Video Artifacts

Hi, I've got a question about codecs and compression. I'm using a Sony DV VX-2000 to shoot video and I'm wondering if in Final Cut Pro if you can use codecs/compression like DVCPRO50 to reduce video artifacts? I know that DVCPRO50 is made by Panasonic, but it's a DV format. I guess I'm more curious as to whether or not you can use any DV codec/compression with a DV tape? (except for PAL since it's not used in North America). I know this sounds silly but it would really help me for future projects.

DV is a 'codec' in its own right... in the sense that everything digital is a compression of the natural acoustic world. Since what comes thru the glass HAS to be compressed to fit as digital information to the tape, different cameras going to different tapes can do it differently... DV25, DV50, HDV, DigiBeta etc. All of these are FORMS of codecs... but not what we generally CALL codec. Plus, apple throws in it's own codec in the form of a QT wrapper to the material captured/read off the tape.
So -- you really need to be capturing with the same FORMAT (we'll call it format now...) as the material was encoded to tape.
    Does that help you?
You're mixing terms and getting yourself confused, I think.

  • Video Artifacts During Heavy GPU Operations

    Hello,
    I have a Mid-2014 Macbook Pro 15-inch, 2.5 GHz Intel Core i7, 16 GB RAM, GeForce GT 750M 2 GB.
When I perform GPU-heavy operations, such as rendering in Adobe Media Encoder using CUDA, I start to get video artifacts onscreen. I have attached an example.
The computer is sitting on an iCurve elevated stand, and I can hear the fans running. I suspect this is being caused by heat but I'm not sure. The problem is exasperated when I'm using 3 displays so I am now only using 2 external displays.
The problem also gets worse as the gpu-intensive tasks progress.
There are no meaningful messages in the console logs that would indicate software problems.
I would like to check my GPU temperature, but there is no straightforward way to do this with the NVIDIA GPU.

    Have you tried iStat menus?

  • Intel i915 Video Artifacts with Xorg 1.9

Hey everyone.  I set up Arch with my girlfriend on her Asus U81A earlier tonight, but we're getting some terrible video artifacting and I can't seem to find us a solution.  Basically the screen often fails to refresh after things even as simple as typing - lots of black boxes.  Is anyone getting the same behavior?  Has anyone come across a solution?  Here are her versions of the pertinent packages.  I'm not sure if this is just a conflict with the new xorg 1.9 or what...  I tried specifying the intel driver manually via both mkinitcpio.conf and GRUB (where you modeset=1).  Neither helps at all.

  • Sleep Display not staying asleep when encoding video

    Hello,
I am looking for a way to turn the display off and KEEP it off with applications running as normal, until I want to wake it up. It is not always staying asleep.
I have a hot corner set up so that I can instantly turn my iMac display off (including the backlight). This works fine most of the time, but when running certain applications, activating sleep display works for a few seconds then stops working and the screen comes back to life.
Example applications which cause this are iTunes when encoding a video (e.g. converting a movie to iPod format), iSquint when encoding video, iDVD when encoding and burning a DVD - seems to be anything that makes heavy use of the processor.
I have tried all sorts of things to get around this:
    1. setting the sleep display timer to 1 minute in the Energy Saving settings
    2. 3rd party application and widget "Sleep Display" (http://linestreet.googlepages.com/home) which claims to make the display go to sleep and STAY asleep, suggesting "This version may work for people who experienced the monitor going off then coming right back on" - which indicates that it's not just me having the problem. This "Sleep Display" application doesn't work with Leopard though; the author acknowledges this and suggests he will update it if he upgrades to 10.5
    3. different application - http://www.imalc.com/Site/SleepDisplay.html - this does the same as the hot corner and wakes up within a few seconds
    4. sleep display tool in Dockables - same problem
    5. "shades" system preference add-on, this makes the screen black and keeps it black but doesn't turn the backlight off
    6. tried hiding the offending application, moving it to another space - nothing seems to work!
    7. covering the imac with clothes - not ideal!
    Thanks for your help!
    Jim
P.S. the screensaver does stay on - so whatever is waking the sleep display isn't disturbing the screen saver - this suggests to me it's a bug. Obviously a black screensaver isn't the solution though - the backlight is still on.

I've got a very the similar problem. Brand new iMac 24" that shipped with Leopard -- my first Mac after jumping ship fom the Windoze side.
I had iTunes updating it's album artwork and since it was taking a while, I went to bed. When I turned out my light, I realized the screen had not yet gone to sleep (a good 15 minutes after it should have). So I set up a Hot Corner to put the display to sleep. When I put the mouse there, the monitor would go to sleep, but wake up within 10 seconds. At first I thought it was just the mouse moving as I walked away, but it wasn't.
I ended up turning the computer off because the big beautiful screen was throwing too much light. Since, I rarely turn my computers off and they're usually doing SOMETHING, this is really annoying.
Admittedly, I haven't tried some othe the potential solutions above, but this has to be the same bug. Screen saver stays on, monitor comes out of sleep.
    Any help would be.....well.....helpful.

  • Video Artifacts: Radeon 9800 Pro + ACD 23 (Clear) + G5

    Hi guys.
I've been experiencing some video artifacts with my retail version Radeon 9800 Pro 256MB (not the OEM "XT" version from Apple) which is driving my ACD 23" (Clear Enclosure), which is connected to a Dualie 2.5GHz G5 running Tiger 10.4.2.
Prior to installing the upgraded video card, I never had this problem, so I am pretty sure it's the card.
It has only happened to me when the G5 wakes from sleep. And it doesn't happen very often, either. Maybe 1 out of 20 wakes from sleep. The only way to get it back to normal is to turn off the G5 completely, disconnect the ADC connector cable from the back of the video card, and then reconnect it and reboot.
I also have a second display connected to a Radeon 7000 via VGA and when the artificats appear, the other display is just fine. The weird thing is that I can actually take a screen shot of the artifacts, which I thought wouldn't show up. I am not sure what that means, but I think the fact that I can take a screenshot of it tells me the display is being corrupted at the system level. Right?
Any help would be appreciated. TIA.
    Here's a screenshot:
    http://tinyurl.com/8jvtb

    Hi Bryanus,
Did you have an ADC port on your old card? Do you still have your old card? If this is the case, you can verify that the new card is implicated by re-installing your old card and seeing whether the problem repeats itself.
If you only have DVI on your old card, you would have to borrow an adaptor, but then you are relying on the adaptor to function properly.
If the problem doesn't repeat itself with your old card being used, then the new card is the culprit, in which case I'd ask to have it replaced, or get a refund.
If the problem does repeat itself with the old card, then you might want to consider other possible contributing factors such as the physical state of the monitor connection (dirty or tarnished contacts, bent pins etc.).
If the problem repeats itself with a new (replacement) card, you could add AGP slot issues to the above paragraph.
"Sleep" in an Apple Mac often generates issues with third party hardware, so your primary consideration that it is probably the card is (to me anyway) still the most likely.
All the best with the diagnosis!
    Cheers!

  • Encoded video doesn't work on Toshiba Blu-ray disc player

I have a problem that I am trying to encode a sequence of frames in a video container , but the encoded video doesn't work on toshiba blu ray disc player .. I am using the following ffmpeg command to encode frames and convert them to a video:
    ffmpeg -i "C:\ManVsWigan\Frames\%d.png" -vcodec libx264 "C:\ManVsWigan\encoded.mp4"
I tried multiple video codecs but no luck yet
    "-vcodec mpeg4"
    "-vcodec mpeg2video"
If you have any idea please help me

The BluRay player leverages parts of Windows DirectShow but won't serve very well as a general player since Windows will load other players for the majority of media formats.
You can get away with a limited amount of tampering of the BluRay's players tolerance of media files until you violate some far away written DRM safeguard and kneecapping the BluRay player from doing anything.
If you're trying to validate your ffmpeg composed tests of your content as part of the editing process, you're better to avoid relying on the BluRay player that is purposed for narrow replay of licensed content and equipped with oversensitive safeguards susceptible to malfunctioning from the invasions of video pirates like you defined by studio executives.
You and I understand you're not a pirate but chances aren't being taken.
Whether you just dowloaded FFmep in the macho exe format or part of the millions of other packages that include it, you can tune your players to codecs pretty easily with the KLite Codec Manager or the Registry.
Chances are you already know about KLite since editing video on Windows eventually requires it and its hard to walk down the street without eventually kiceking over a copy. But just in case you've been living on a Martian cave with your hands over your ears, snag a mirrored copy from: http://codecguide.com /download_kl.htm
I like KLite more than others because it is fairly unobtrusive and avoids stomping over other media tools the way Adobe Premiere or Sony Vegas enslaves Windows and can neuter BluRay codecs without always adequately replacing them. I can cite threads on the matter but just googling for anything such as "Adobe Premier killed my BluRay" or "Sony Vegas ruined Windows" will usually return desperate strings of posts long enough to wrap around Jupiters equator.
For general maintenance of Windows poor codec management, grab this noninstalling executable http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/installed_codec.html to determine if Windows believes it has the same codecs you thought it did and you'll likely be surprised by the fine tuning you'll need to perform.

  • Quicktime 7.6.4 won't play h264 encoded videos on my 10.4.11 MacMini

    Hello:
This is my first post. I read through the forums and this seems to be the correct place to pose my question. If it's not, my apologizes.
I'm trying to find out why Quicktime 7.6.4 won't play h264-encoded video on my MacMini (G4 PPC). I'm running 10.4.11. I recently installed Perian 1.2.1 and it got some .avi files to play correctly, whereas before there was no sound. But the h264 files still get me a black screen, albeit with sound now. Some h264 files can be played in VLC Media Player (but that's a horrible player compared to Quicktime in my opinion, as it constantly drops frames and eats 100% of my processor time), but VLC even has the black screen problem on some h264 files as well.
I've also tried MPlayer OSX but that's really an alpha-type development and has a lot of bugs. Many movies it can't even open.
Sorry for the rambling, but again my question: Is there any way to play h264-encoded video in Quicktime 7.6.4 on my Mac?
Thanks in advance for your expertise and advice.

    Mr Ram,
There is a group of Quicktime specialists in Apple.com ⇒ Support ⇒ Discussions ⇒ Quicktime .
The more data you give us, the easier it is to help us help you to diagnose your problem. Your disk space would be very useful. Contrary to some, I advocate iDefrag to assist VLC and MPlayer, which you were a little hard on.
    GNU/Linux's free offerings
MPlayer was developed a decade ago, and I prefer it for viewing DVDs (for 'DVD Player') seems too dark. VLC (legally) copies many CRM-protected DVDs of yours, so you can play only the burned copy. When I'm having a problem playing a DVD, the VLC log tells me all: only perfect DVDs play well on VLC.
There are two ways of viewing everything.
    Streaming MPEG-4
+H.264/MPEG-4 AVC+ is a fancy codec based upon MPEG-4: it requires a powerful processor to de-compress it. I watched an MPEG-4 movie from a G3 iBook in 2005. It played flawlessly.
    Your Problem
Quicktime 7.X applications can not play +H.264/MPEG-4 AVC+ streams. It was a bug Apple never fixed. Frames are dropped because H.264 is so slow that it requires special hardware. You, I'm sad to say, don't have it.
To quote the Wikipedia on Quicktime: 'QuickTime 7 lacks support for H.264's Sample Aspect Ratio .[67] QuickTime X does not have this limitation; many Apple products (such as iTunes and Apple TV) still use the older QuickTime 7 engine.'
My Quicktime Pro on a PPC PowerBook is 7.6.4. You can either use a Linux transplant or upgrade to Quicktime X. Those more familiar with Macs may have better ideas for you.
    My best,
    Bruce

  • Encoding Video for DVD?

I want to make a DVD that will play in home players, though I do not need to make a menu using DVD SP. Is there a way to encode video straight from FCP into a file that will play in a DVD player?
    Thanks.

This is really a question for the DVDSP forum, but the sum of it is that you use Compressor to encode your video to MPEG2 and your audio to 2 channel Dolby, then import those two files into DVDSP as Assets and drop them into the Timeline in DVDSP.
That will be Track 1, so select the disc in the Outline and in the Inspector, and you should find a drop down menu to make Track 1 the First Play. That's basically it, but I usually do one or two other things.
One: If this is for a trade show, or even a client approval disc, I'll set the Jump To for Track 1 to be Track 1. That will cause it to loop until the user stops it.
Two: I'll create a simple menu with a single PLAY button in the center, and map that button to play Track 1. That way, if the client inadvertently drops out of the play loop and wants to get back into it, s/he can do it by hitting Menu on the remote and pressing Select.
More details on all of this are contained in your Fine Manual.

im having strange video artifacts when dragging a file from any finder window onto the desktop.... this youtube video shows it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uXhzTDbuhIA  (this is not my video and the lion used there was not the commercial release but its exactly the same behavior)
i use an imac 27 i7 2011 with clean lion install and applied 10.7.1 update  (it happened the same prior to update)

    Try both of these Resets:
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
    Wait 15 seconds.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.

  • Imovie 9 "far far away "video artifacts on render

Trying to a 30 second clip in iMovie 9.0.9 using the Stars background and "far far away" text fx. I can add the text no problem but when it renders, I am getting a whole bunch of video artifacts. After I render, the same artifacts show up in iMovie in the preview pane. They never actually show uo until I render. Any thoughts? This is on a macbook air (original) but I have tried it on different systems with the same result. The text is short phases (for grade 1) all center justified. Looks like a bug in the far far away script.

  • Encode Video Files not working for avi files

    Hi,
I've been trying to convert some .avi files to apple format using Lion's native 'Encode video files' function however keep getting a 'avconvert: source file not found for source file://fileparthhere avconvert: failed to create an export session. Check setup
I can't work out why as this has worked before in Lion and works fine for other video formats. The only thing I've done is remove Final Cut Express HD and can't add it again as I don't own it anymore
Suggestions? Is there a encoder to make this work or should it work anyway?
    Thanks

If you click Yes the project file will be updated when you save it. That has nothing to do with the media.
Are the Lesson and Media folders still in the Book Files folder (or whatever it's called)?
Select one of the clips in the browser and use Edit>Item Properties. One of the first lines is Source. That gives you the file path for where your media is supposed to be located. What does it say? If nothing is there, use the File>Reconnect function and point the application to where the media is located.

    Hi
i'm new in JMF and I'm trying to write a program that will encode video files to h.264 and also to divx. For know a made quite a lot of search and im still stuck. I tried with fobs but is has only decoding capabilities now im trying to do something with jffmpeg but it seems not to work for me (i mean encoding for decoding is ok) or i don't know how to make does anybody know what can i do ?? i mean some libraries that i can use or some tutorials. Is it possible to make something like this ??

The AVC or Advanced Video Codec / H.264 the MPEG-4 Standard is as smooth as glass. Very hardware intensive and time consuming depending on the size of your file. I reserve this for music videos and family video that I have captured to DVI. I am running a Windows machine dedicated to video work, P4 HT 3.6 overclocked to 4.1 and running liquid cooling and 4Gb of Ram.
