Encore 2.0 MPEG-2

Am I missing something with Encore 2.0.  The direct burn to DVD seems to ONLY write in MPEG-2 format - which seems to have issues displaying on some installations of Windows Media Player.  Is there an easy way in Encore 2.0 OR Premiere Pro 2.0 to generate a DVD that will play in "most" computer DVD drives? OR ... IF not, can you recommend burning software to achieve this goal.

DVD-Video is MPEG2.  There is no other option.
The only way to get a DVD to play on a computer is for that computer to
have a licensed MPEG2 decoder installed.  Usually a software DVD player
takes care of that for you.
For "universal" playback on Windows, you need to use Flash or Windows
Media.  For Mac+Windows, Flash is the best way.  FYI, Encore CS3 and CS4
can take your DVD project and turn it into a Flash project for you.

  • Encore 2.0 mpeg i-frame slideshow compatibility issue

I suspect this is more a glitch report than a question but just in case someone else encounters it only to become completely baffled, it may save them much time and frustration.
Most of the technical information is from Adobe Support Knowledgebase Article Document 332456 "Troubleshoot preview and playback issues (Adobe Encore DVD 2.0) http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/332456.html
My problem was as follows; I created many slideshows consisting of 60 bmps each. Encore imported/scaled and swapped to png's/and previewed them fine. Each slideshow had a 6 second duration for each slide with no transitions or pan and zoom enabled. It was only when I had burnt to a DVD-R and played them using my Philips DVD player that "occasionaly" the 2nd slide of "some" (not all) slideshows would only appear for a split second before progressing. And so ignorning the 6 second duration set for the slideshow as a whole. If I would then go back to the root menu and play it again, most times the 2nd slide would hold for the 6 seconds. Similarily even when the 2nd slide was skipped if I did chapter back to it, it would then display for the intended 6 seconds. So you can see why I was completely baffled by "why only the second slide" and "why only occasionally" (as after all this is hardware and logically should behave the same under the same circumstances each time).
This then led me to the above mentioned Adobe support article which I will quote from; "Many DVD players, both set-top and software, handle playback of slideshows differently. To conserve disc space, Encore DVD creates an MPEG I frame for each slide then assigns a duration for that frame based on the slide's duration. Many players cannot accurately display these and will instead display only a single frame of the image before reverting to a black screen for the duration of the slide."
The article then goes on to propose a work around which essentially involves using pan/zoom or even Premiere Pro to create a video version of the slideshow. All which would avoid using the mpeg i-frame method.
My only guess as to the cause of my problem is that maybe Encore's method of encoding mpeg i-frames may not strictly adhere to what is defined by the mpeg-2 specification. This claim is based mainly on two pieces of evidence:
    1) On the same Philips LX3000D player I can play without problems other i-frame based slideshows created using other DVD authoring software (mainly tested with Ulead)
    2) If I burn any Encore project with slideshows to a DVD folder and play that folder, my version of Cyberlink PowerDVD XP 4.0 (or Windows Media Player which would use the same mpeg decoder anyway) will completely ignore any set slideshow duration or other settings and simply display each slide for about 1 second.
As there appears to be no mention of a similar problem in all the forums I realise that it must work fine for other users. But just in case someone else has come across it I would be most interested to hear any conflicting/co-oberative evidence you might have.

Yes when I compare the size of the VOBs they are of similiar size. Maybe this is another clue as two slideshows made exactly the same way using two authoring programs (one being Encore) produce slightly different size vob files. I assume they might be using different data rates but again the mpeg specification for i-frames stipulates that their data rate is defined at something like 2.0 mbps.

  • Cannot transcode to Flash Video from Encore 3

I have recently purchased the Adobe Production Premium package and successfully prepared several Blu-ray and standard definition DVD's. However, whenever I attempt to output any of these DVD's to Flash Video by selecting Build>Output to Flash from within Encore 3, my menus transcode, but when Encore gets to my timeline video, the progress bar goes to about 20% almost instantly and remains there forever. I have tried several different types of video files including short Quicktime movies created in Final Cut Pro as well as other formats in the Encore 3 timeline. The result is always as given above. When this happens, I finally have to Force Quit Encore 3 because selecting cancel on the transcode give me an endlessly spinning beach ball.
I am running Encore 3 on a 8-core Mac Pro (Early 2008 model) with 12 GB of RAM and under Leopard 10.5.4 (latest version with all updates installed). I have successfully transcoded these timelines that seem to freeze Encore 3 using MPEG SlipStream so I know the files are OK.
Is anyone else having this problem? Is there any solution to the problem? Does output to Flash simply not work under Leopard?
Thank you in advance for responding.

For the benefit of those subscribing to this thread here is the latest exchange in the several-week long series of exchanges that I have had with Adobe Technical Support over the failure of Encore CS3 to output to Flash on the Mac platform. I think you will find it interesting that Adobe Tech support cannot even agree among themselves that this is a problem.

    Hello Thomas,
Thank you for contacting Adobe® Web Support for assistance with Adobe
    Encore® CS3.
I understand that when you try to export Flash® video from Encore CS3
that the trans-coding process freezes at 20%, and that you would like to
know if this issue will be resolved in the Encore® CS4 release.
First of all, yes you are correct, I inadvertently wrote CS3 beta when
I meant to say CS4 beta. Also, I was doing this test on the Mac. The
Export to Flash feature is included in Encore CS4. Here is a link to
the CS4 help file that describes the feature (copy and past into the
address bar of your web browser):

I was not able to locate any documentation regarding a bug when
exporting to Flash from Encore CS3, and when I tested this function on
my Mac using Encore CS3 it worked fine. Perhaps a subsequent QuickTime
update, or the Mac OS 10.5.5 update corrected the issue.
Unfortunately I am unable to give you a definitive answer regarding the
functionality of Encore CS4. We are limited as to what information we
can give out during the pre-release period. The best way for you to
evaluate the software is to download the free trial when it is released.
That way you will know for sure if it has the necessary capabilities
    before you make a purchase.
I hope this information helps to resolve your issue. If you require
further assistance with this issue, please update your web case with
complete details, including what steps you have applied and any error
    messages you are receiving.

    Adam,
Thank you for your October 2 response. In that response you stated: "I was not able to locate any documentation regarding a bug when exporting to Flash from Encore CS3, and when I tested this function on my Mac using Encore CS3 it worked fine. Perhaps a subsequent QuickTime update, or the Mac OS 10.5.5 update corrected the issue."
I am using Mac OS 10.5.5 and I am using the latest version of Quicktime (7.5.5). What version of Quicktime are you using on your Mac that properly works with Encore's output to Flash?
Please note that I was expressly told by Adobe Tech Support (and I have it in writing) that Encore's Output to Flash was broken in a Quicktime update. I believe that the last version of Quicktime that Encore output to Flash will work with is 7.3.x.
I will definitely test Encore CS4's output to Flash before purchasing.
Please do let me know the version of Quicktime that you have on your Mac that is working correctly in Encore CS3 relative to output
    to Flash video.
    Thank you.

Since no one replied, I can now confirm that the failure of Adobe Encore CS3 to successfully build a DVD to Flash Video is a known problem which has been confirmed by Adobe Technical Support. The feature works perfectly under Windows XP or Vista and it did work in Leopard on an earlier version of Quicktime, specifically Quicktime. specifically Quicktime 7.3.1. However, under the latest version of Quicktime (7.5), the Build to Flash Video feature in Encore CS3 has been broken. I have provided detailed feedback to Apple on this issue. One can only hope that in a future release of Quicktime, the problem will be corrected.

  • MOV to DVD editing in premiere and encore

Hi.. Sometime ago I bought a digital still camera which can also shoot 640x480 30fps quicktime mov files.
To edit, combine and share the videos I am planning to write them in dvd with premiere pro cs3 and encore cs3. Although I have learned some about these programs I dont know some important preferences of exporting.
Could someone please answer these questions so I know what I am doing...
    1. When starting a new project or exporting to encore to make mpeg-2 DVD what should I select in field order...Lower, upper or no fields (progressive scan)?
    2. Likewise is my source video coming from camera as quicktime mov interlaced or non-interlaced? If it is non-interlaced it would be ridiculous to de-interlace, right? Although I used gspot to understand that I couldnt get any information about that issue
    3. When I compare my source movie and output DVD I find that quicktime movie is a little bit sharper than DVD output in my computer. Is this normal or should I sharpen it a little in premiere pro before outputting to encore?
    4. As I can edit in premiere and export as mpeg-2 I dont need any other quicktime codec, do I?
This is the result I got from gspot

    Thanks for the replies.

Your camera is not suited for video editing. Either use a proper video camera or use a different application.
    1. Lower.
    2. Depends on your camera.
    3. Likely to happen. GIGO, garbage in, garbage out.
    4. No.

  • Moving timelines from Premiere Pro to Encore?

The only options that seem to work in my Premiere Pro/Encore version CS3 are to export from Pro using "export to Encore" .  However, once I do this I am left with a bunch of ncor files that I have not been able to consolidate into one project.  Nor can I import it as a whole then razor it into parts in Encore so that I can create separate timelines in order to create menu links for my DVD.    I have tried to save or convert the Pro timelines into wmv files with no luck.  Mac users don't seem to have these problems.  I am using a muscular PowerSpec PC with plenty of memory run by Windows Vista  which is an awful operating system because it freezes periodically requiring me to start over.  I am not sure that any of these other problems can be attributed to Vista. Encore seems to be an especially inflexible program.  I assume I just don't know how to use the software well.

You have that option, but it's a multi-part process, as Jim mentions. In PrPro, just Export as a DVD-compliant MPEG-2 Video-only file. Do the same for the Audio, as either a PCM/WAV, or DD AC3, Audio-only file.
Then, in Encore, Import the MPEG as a Timeline, and the Audio-only file as an Asset. From the Project Panel in Encore, just drag the Audio file to the appropriate Timeline, where it will snap into place.
One can also Export from PrPro as a DV-AVI, Video-only, Import that into Encore as a Timeline, and let Encore Transcode that on Automatic.
    Good luck,

  • Outputting a DVD To Flash Video in Encore 3 Under Leopard

This topic is indirectly related to Final Cut Pro 6 (since it is the source of my Quicktime movies in Encore 3) and I post it here because I have had no luck getting any responses on other forums including the Creative Cow and Adobe forums.
I have recently purchased the Adobe Production Premium package and successfully prepared several Blu-ray and standard definition DVD's using Encore 3. However, whenever I attempt to output any of these DVD's to Flash Video by selecting Build>Output to Flash from within Encore 3, my menus transcode, but when Encore gets to my timeline video, the progress bar goes to about 20% almost instantly and remains there forever. Is anyone else having this problem? Is there any solution to the problem? Does output to Flash simply not work under Leopard?
I have written to Adobe Tech Support. I have received no response from Adobe. I feel that someone on this forum must be using Encore 3 (since it is one of the few ways of getting Blu-ray DVD authoring on the Mac) and has tried to output the DVD as Flash video from within Encore 3. I am simply trying to determine (1) if this is a known issue when running Encore 3 under Leopard; (2) if there is any fix to get Output to Flash working from within Encore 3.
Thank you in advance for responding.
    Tom

    David,
My hat is off to you for persevering with Encore 3 and getting it to output flash video. AFter reading that you had gotten it to work, I was inspired to try once again. This time I encoded my timeline to DVCPro HD by exporting the FCP project to Compressor. I then took this timeline (an 11 minute video) into Encore 3 and tried to build a flash DVD. I have a main menu and scene selection menu, and they both transcoded fine in about 20 minutes, but once again when Encore got to my timeline, the progress bar moved to about 1-2% and simply stayed there. After 7 hours I finally gave up and canceled the transcode which had never progressed any further and did a Force Quit on Encore.
I noticed in doing the above, that during the transcode of the menus Activity Monitor shows my cpu is reading 170-190 and varying as you would expect. Once Encore hits my timeline and begins the transcode of that, the cpu drops to 100 and remains there with no real sign of activity.
Can you tell me if your DVD that you successfully output to flash with Encore 3 had chapter marks in it? I am wondering if they could be the trouble. Some people have indicated that they solved the problem by going back to an earlier version of Quicktime. I am using version 7.5 of Quicktime, which is the latest version. Can you tell me what version of Quicktime you are using on the Mac that succeeded in outputting to Flash video using Encore 3?
    Thanks again for your help.

  • Can't launch Encore CS4

I just downloaded and installed the trial version of Encore CS4.  I click on "I'd like to continue to use this product on a trial basis."  Then I get this message:  "Adobe Encore CS4 cannot run in trial mode.  Please relaunch the application & provide a valid serial number."
I'm sure I'm doing something wrong.  I can't imagine that Adobe would have trial software downloads that can NOT be run...on purpose!!
    Please help.  Very frustrated.  Thanks!!

As far as I know (provide a download link to show me I am wrong) there is no such thing as an Encore trial, due to the MPEG licensing and the fact that Encore MUST have mpeg available to work
Since Encore must have mpeg available, and since that is a licensed product that must have a paid registration, I wonder just where you found an Encore trial to download
I know there is a Premiere Pro trial... with mpeg functions removed
    Added
Going to the trial selection page at http://www.adobe.com/downloads/ I do NOT find an Encore trial
The PPro trial http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/tdrc/index.cfm?product=premiere_pro&loc=en makes no mention of an Encore trial
Just where did you get this "Encore Trial" product?

  • Mystery of the shrunken video

I exported a project in Premiere Pro as an MPEG-2 DVD file without changing any of the default settings. Then I opened up Encore 2.0 (for the first time) and imported the MPEG file as an asset, proceeding to create a DVD. Everything seemed to go OK but when playing the DVD on a standard player the video does not fill the screen... the image is shrunken down about 75% with a black border around all sides. The DVD menus fill the screen but not the actual video.
I went back and checked in Encore and the video was shrunken in the preview window also (I had not noticed this before). Encore shows the MPEG file as being 720x480 so I'm perplexed as to why it is not filling the screen. One other thing I tried was to import an avi file from another Premiere project into the problem DVD project and when checking that, it filled the screen.
Any thoughts on what could be causing this problem and a possible fix?

    Re-export from Premiere Pro.
Make sure that *all* of the settings in the AME are what you want, and that no post-processing tasks are active. Default or not, you must always make sure Premiere's export settings reflect what you expect.

  • No image in the monitor...

Hello! i ve imported a QT movie in the timeline of Encore. then a mpeg file compressed by Sorenson.
everything went well for import. But when i press play in the monitor, there is no image, just a dark screen sometime getting lighter or darker and the audio is ok. just no image...when i play the files before to import it in encore it plays just fine in QT or Windows MP.
Same thing on the little screen in the project window.I can just see the first frame of my movie when i put the pointer at the beguinning.
but when i play...white/dark again(no image) with good audio.
    Please help! Thanks.X
ps: last week i ve clicked on many different settings and at the end one day i could see my movie previewed. But then any other imported file in a new project wouldn t do it anymore and i can t remember exactly what i did to have it ok one time...

I'm having the same problem. I have a complient mpeg2 file (PAL format) and it just plays blank in the Monitor, although the audio plays fine. When I load this mpeg file in ANY of my media players it plays just fine. Also when I import the file as an asset in Encore it takes an AGE to import, whereas if I use anothe DVD authoring package like Ulead's DVD Workshop 2 it imports very quickly. Although I have only just started using Encore 2.0 and I love it's interface and superb professional options in my opinion it needs to be far less fussy on the kinds of files it will import. Iv'e read that it doesnt like DivX files etc, but considering this is 2006 and DivX is by far the most used codec for compressing movies on PC's and consumer hardware it really needs to get into the modern age!.

  • Time of source video.

    Hi
Would you please help me? I have video clip and I want to convert it to DVD-video with menu and chapter, the time of video clip is 90 minutes and I want to make 8 chapter for it, every things was all right until I exported my video clip to Adobe Encore as one video file, whenever I imported it, Encore crashed, of course I exported it from my editing software as MPEG-2 DVD complaint.(my video clip format is VOB)
I dont know what the problem is but when I exported only 10 minutes of video clip I didnt have problem in Encore, can anybody help me?
Is it common to import long video source as a one file or I should to divide it to some files?
    Can anybody explain it?
Any comment would be greatly appreciated.

Edius is a Canopus product. Canopus also makes ProCoder and I guess that both will use the same MPEG encoding engine. Some users have reported problems with MPEG files made by ProCoder.
I would suggest to try exporting a DV AVI file from Edius and let Encore handle the MPEG transcoding.

  • Reimport VOB files

    Hallo,
I just wonder if the following makes sense and doesn't make any problems: I create a slideshow, because with in the timeline editor I cannot perform pan, zoom or blend on still images.
I want to add different soundtracks for different languages, and different subtitles. As far as I can see, Encore DVD 2.0 doesn't allow that for slide shows.
Now if I create a DVD from this, but store the output to a folder, a VOB file is created for this slide show. If I now import this VOB file as an asset and insert it into a new timeline, I can add all the sound tracks and subtitles as I want it.
I understand that the slide shows work with MPEG I frames in order to save DVD disk space. This disk space saving might be lost when reimporting the VOB file. But that's ok.
I wonder if there might occur other problems that I cannot see right now. Has anybody any experiences with this?
    Regards,
    Christian Kirchhoff

    Hi Christian,
The navigation data in a VOB file can cause unexpected results in Encore, such as incorrect clip duration or possibly even build errors. There are freeware VOB editors that can strip the streams out of a VOB. Go to http://videohelp.com and do a search of their tools section.
Once the streams are stripped out (usually M2V and AC3), they should behave like any other asset in Encore. I'm not sure how Encore will handle MPEG-2 I-frame stills from an Encore slideshow, but you may be able to tell us.
If it doesn't work as expected, you may want to create your slideshows from PPro or another application which will offer more control.
    Regards,
    Joe

  • Adobe encoder too much data for the media how to adjust within encoder

I am trying to export a project to encore/ bluray via mpeg format from premiere 3 encoder. This project is 2hrs 20 mins long and at medium quality I get 26 gigs how to i bring the data amount down to facillatate burning in encore. All my chapters are set to be menued within encore.
The second part is which is best route to encode the mpeg or the h264
    Thanks
    Joan

    Joan,
The only way to decrease space is by lowering bitrates at the cost of quality.
Use this calculator: http://dvd-hq.info/bitrate_calculator.php to get the best bitrate for your material.

  • Problems creating and exporting Blu-ray

On one of my first efforts at using Encore CS3 to create a Blu-ray movie I ran into some puzzling problems. I do not know if these are bugs in Encore, problems with my computer, or errors on my part in setting up the project.
A few weeks ago I created a movie of length 2:06:21:11 using Premiere Pro CS3. At first I needed a DVD of this movie and I did not have sufficient storage to export to Encore for Blu-ray, so I exported MPEG2 video and .wav audio for DVD. I imported these assets into Encore (complete with chapter markers) and produced my DVD with no problem.
Later, having obtained more external storage, I returned to the Premiere project and exported the movie as MPEG2 for Blu-ray, using the high-quality 1440x1080 preset. I imported this file and the associated .wav audio file into a new Encore project (I was disappointed not to find the chapter markers here) and proceeded to create menus similar to those
from the original DVD project. Everything went fine until I checked the project and found that it exceeded the Blu-ray disc size: the projected build size was 25.61 Gb.
Now the file sizes were as follows:
The MPEG2 video file was listed in Windows Explorer as 23,035,133KB, which translates to about 23,588,000,000 bytes. The same file was listed in Encore as 21.9GB, which is itself a bit of a puzzle: even if the file were just under 21.95GB, rounding down to 21.9GB, this would be only about 23,569,000,000 bytes, so I would think the actual file size would have been rounded by Encore to 22.0GB. Incidentally, 7,582 seconds of video at the target bitrate of 25,000,000bps would come to about 23,694,000,000 bytes, so the 2-pass VBR was pretty close to the target.
The .wav audio file was listed by Windows Explorer as 1,421,502KB, which comes to about 1,456,000,000 bytes. It was listed in Encore as 1.3GB -- once again, I would expect Encore to have rounded the actual file size to 1.4GB.
In any case, the real audio plus video file sizes are just a bit too big for a 25,000,000,000-byte Blu-ray disc even if the sizes listed by Encore would just fit. So I decided to use Dolby audio at 192Kbps to reduce the audio to one-eighth of the size of the .wav file.
First I did this by specifying a transcode preset for the audio that included Dolby, rather than leaving it set to "Don't Transcode". A check of the project still showed that it exceeded the disc capacity, and initiating the Build process STILL SHOWED A PROJECTED SIZE OF 25.61 GB -- as if the Dolby transcoding were being ignored completely.
Next I transcoded the .wav file to see if this would change the size estimate. The transcode took some minutes (during which time no progress bar appeared in the transcoding progress panel). Finally the audio file was listed as "Transcoded", but a check STILL SHOWED 25.61 GB.
Finally I transcoded the .wav file to Dolby stereo at 192Kbps using Vegas Platinum + DVD, replaced my original audio file with this one on the timeline, and marked it "Don't Transcode". But a check STILL SHOWED 25.61 GB. The Dolby file was listed by Windows Explorer as 177,678KB, or about 182,000,000 bytes.
Now this certainly should have fit on a Blu-ray disc. It is slightly shorter than the third bit-budgeting example in the Encore manual, and it has no motion menus or slide shows. The video plus audio, both "Don't Transcode" assets, total about 23,770,000,000 bytes, well below the 24,500,000,000 bytes suggested in the manual to allow a "very conservative" 2% margin for overhead.
So I figured the size projections were erroneous and I ran the build. It produced a Blu-ray folder with total size 24.6GB, which translates to 26,414,000,000 bytes, or about 1,414,000,000 too many. Looking in the Blu-ray folder, I found that the main MPEG-2 TS file (named "00000") contained 25,814,922KB, or about 26,434,000,000 bytes.

So I ask Adobe and any expert participants in this forum for their help understanding the various problems mentioned above, specifically:
    1. Why did the estimated file size come out so much greater than the sum of the known video and audio file sizes?
    2. Why did the estimated file size not change as PCM audio was replaced with Dolby?
    3. Why did the actual build file size come out so much different from the estimate?
    4. Is Adobe's stated "very conservative" margin of 2% in fact too small for Blu-ray?
    5. Why was there no progress bar when transcoding .wav audio to Dolby?
    6. Why did no chapter markers come over into Encore in the MPEG-2 Blu-ray file?
    7. Why were the file sizes in the Project panel of Encore, for the two "large" files, slightly smaller than they should have been?
Please excuse the length of this post, and thanks in advance for any help in solving these problems. I can certainly work
around them by encoding to a lower bitrate but I would prefer to address them directly.
