Encore 2.0 - Subtitles Recovery

Hi Folks,
I got Encore 2.0 and I was working on French subtitles last four days. I didn't have any timecoded source file or anything, I was manually adding subtitles, one by one, syncing with video, in and out...
If I now try to open my project, I get the message "Stream requested doesn't exist" and that's it. I can't get into the project. Is there any way how I could be able to recover subtitle track somehow form the project directory at least? I was checking all files in the project directory, but it looks hopeless...
Any idea please?

well it apparently wasn't hanging, it just took 18 minutes to save the project! I tested with three manually made subtitles on Friday and it took longer than expected to save the project, so I did it today with the full subtitle file, infreakcredible, nearly 20 minutes to save a project that has no menus, one video track, one audio track (video is about 14 minutes long) and one subtitle track. new Dell PC 3.00 Ghz, 2.99Gz dual core proc and 2.0 Gb of ram ( for the life of me I thought I had told IT I wanted 3 Gb of RAM) opening the project seems to take forever as well... workflow is gonna slow down a heck of a lot

Encore subtitles don't appear on DVD

Hi, I've put subtitles on a video in Encore. They need to appear on the DVD (client does not want option to turn them off). All looks fine in the preview window, but when I build the project and burn to disc, there are no subtitles on the video. Am I missing something obvious? I can't find anything in Encore which gives an option for the subtitles to be on or off. I've been wrestling with this for days and my deadline is looming. Any help with this would be most welcome.

The DVD spec allows subtitles to be on or off. Even if you set them up as turned on, and provide no option for a menu to turn them off, all a user has to do is to use their remote to turn them off. I see no option in Encore for remote subtitle action to be restricted.
You need to take the project back to Premiere, add the subtitles there, and make them part of the video. What your client wants are not really "subtitles" as provided as an option on DVDs. Well, they are subtitles, but the restriction you want is no possible; at least not in Encore.
I don't know if scripting allows this, but your solution is straight forward.
The only problem: I don't think Premiere provides an option for importing a subtitle track (you can export from Encore if you added the subtitles there).

Subtitle problems with Encore CS4 and BD/Blu-ray -- here is a solution!

Do you have problems with subtitles: for example they vanish completely after doing fast forward or turn them off and on again. Then here you can find one possible solution.
I am using Windows Vista 32bit. Thus Encore CS4 is the last version which I can use. Because Adobe will never provide a solution for this version, I was looking for another solution.
At least I found a workaround for my subtitle problems.
Now I am doing the following steps:
1. Create the blu-ray disk in a folder without subtitles
2. Create the subtitles with a program like "subtitle workshop"
3. Save the subtitles in the .srt format.
4. Use the program SubConverter Express v1.5.0 to convert the subtitles in the .sup format. Here you must choose a suitable font & font size.
5. Add the .sup to the blu-ray folder structure with the program BDFix Express v1.7.3. When doing that, you can also choose the language i.g. "deu" for german. You will find a detailed description in the forum on www.defsoft.com. It is very easy to understand.
6. BDFix will create a new folder with all necessary files to burn a blu-ray disk. Nothing changes in comparison to the folder which was createt by Encore except that subtitles were added.
7. You can burn this folder with a tool like imgburn.
With this workaround you will have the following advantages:
1. It seems that these subtitles were added in a blu-ray specification conform way. Fast forward/backward, switching on/off, chapter jump still work perfectly.
2. The subtitle fonts are rendered in a much more smooth way than Encore does.
3. The 5 frames gap between subtitles is not longer necessary.
4. This solution ist quite fast (about 20 minutes for a 25 GByte disc).
5. You can use these programs also for other blu-rays to add or remove subtitles.
6. You do not need Encore to add/change or remove subtitles. You can do that also years later. You only need the burned blu-ray disc.
To be honest, there is one disadvantage:
- The two programs (SubConverter & BDFix) cost about 200 US Dollar. But to cure my nerves that was worth it.
Hint: You can do a first test with the freeware versions. But there are two limitations. SubConverter can only import 30 subtitle lines and BDFix will only create 3 minutes of subtitles.

FLV and F4V use different codecs for Flash video. H.264 in case of F4V and On2 VP6 for FLV. There's a difference of bitrate between different quality presets. You can check the bitrates of files generated using some tool. Your video might be very static to feel the different be the two quality settings.
F4V is the new format and need a newer version of Flash Player. Please update your Flash player and try again to play the F4V files.
Playstream doesnt support F4V format. You can only export FLV files to Playstream.
It might also be an issue of low bandwidth while playing a streaming video. Are you playing is locally or from a web server.

Converted (.SRT - Encore Subtitle text script) never Sync.

Hi all,
I've searched for two days on the web but still no answer.
I'm making a BluRay Disc of a collection of TV Show episodes. I add these episodes as an .m4v file into Encore, which works great. These videos will be transcoded the the appropriat format at the end.
The only problem I encounter is the subtitles: I have an .srt file which runs perfectly sync with the .m4v video file (when I just play it in i.e. VLC, so no Adobe Encore is used)
But when I open the .srt file in a Subtile Editor (Subtitle Workshop, Subtitle Edit, Jubler (MAC) ) and hit ' Save As' Adobe Encore Text Script and import it in Adobe Encore, it starts of as a good sync in the first few seconds of the TV Show episode, but is way out of sync at the end of the episodes... (Sounds like me as an FPS problem?)
I've tried everything, from all different types of FPS output of the subtitle file, to all different project FPS settings.
My main project is 23,976FPS BluRay NTSC, my VIDEOFILE.m4v is 23,976FPS and my subtitles are 23,976FPS.
I really hope someone can help me out here.

Allright, maybe this way is not the fastest way to calculatie it, but it works every time for me:
First of all the crucial properties are that all my videofiles.m4v are 23,976 FPS and I've set my Encore BluRay project to BluRay NTSC 23,976 FPS.
I don't know if this works when different framerates are used...
Anyhow:
I'll go through these steps with an example I used, which I'm sure of it works.
NOTE: WE DON'T DO ANYTHING WITH THE SUBTITLE.srt FILE TILL STEP 7
1)
When you import the videofile.m4v into Adobe Encore, and look at the properties, you'll see it's FPS, but also the time in frames not milliseconds. Write down what time is displayed (in example: 00:53:18:19 which is hh:mm:ss:ff frames)
2)
When you look up the duration of the videofile.m4v outside Adobe Encore it'll display in milliseconds
(I used MediaInfo on OS X, but VLC will also display time. In my case it displayed the videofile.m4v as 53min22sec, and yes this is the same videofile.m4v as the 00:53:18:19 displayed in STEP 1 )
This 53min22sec = 00:53:22:000 (hh:mm:ss:mmm milliseconds)
What we want is the difference between the videofile.m4v in Encore, and outside Encore. This difference can be converted in percentages, which can be applied in Subtitle Edit to adjust the subtitles.
3) "Calculating the displayed frames displayed in Encore to milliseconds"
So, in my case, I'm dealing with 23,976 FPS (note: FPS = Frames Per Second)
Thus;
1 second = 23,976 FPS
1000 milliseconds = 23,976
In this example 00:53:18:19. We know 1000 milliseconds = 23,976 FPS, so we also know how many milliseconds 19 FPS is:
(19*1000ms)/(23,976) = 792,.....ms.
4) "Rewrite the Encore time in seconds"
We now know that 00:53:18:19 (in frames) = 00:53:18:792 (in milliseconds)
5) "Calculate difference in seconds between time shown in Encore (00:53:18:792) and time shown outside Encore (00:53:22:000)"
Difference in seconds = 00:53:22:000 - 00:53:18:792 = 3,208 seconds
Now we have to calculate what the percentage those 3,208 seconds is in respect the the whole videofile.m4v inside Encore.
6) "Calculate percentage"
We know the total time of the videofile.m4v in Encore is 00:53:18:792 (We just calculated that). That total duration is 100%, but being able to calculate with that value, we have to convert those hours:minutes:seconds:milliseconds into just seconds.
Easy: (53min*60seconds) + 18seconds + 0,792seconds = 3198,792 seconds
3198,792 = 100%, so we also know how many % 3,208 seconds is.
(3,208*100%) / 3198,792 = 0,100273472%
We know have calculated the difference between the videofile.m4v inside Encore, and outside Encore.
The subtitle.srt is synchronized to the videofile.m4v outside Encore, and not inside Encore (duh, that's the whole problem)
But when we open Subtitle Edit, open the subtitle.srt and choose for the option to resync with percentage, you'll see it's normalle set to 100%. This value has to be adjusted with our corrected % we've calculated in STEP 6.
So, 100%-0,100273472% = 99,89971214%. Makes sure that it's set to apply on all subtitle lines, and hit ENTER.
7)
Make sure the subtitle is set to 'Unicode' (can be done in Subtitle Edit, just in the main screen).
Then, hit "Save As" and save the subtitle not as .srt but as Adobe Encore NTSC.
You can now import this subtitle_Adobe.Encore.NTSC.txt in Adobe Encore, and it will run Perfectly sync.

Encore .scc file not providing subtitles (CC works)

We’re trying to embed a .scc file (i.e. closed captioning + subtitle) into Adobe Encore and it creates DVD-video discs that have CC but NOT subtitles (we need both). What are we doing wrong...and is there something special we have to do to include both on a DVD?

From your description, I assume you are trying to import the scc file to Encore as a subtitle. This will not work.
The scc file has different content.
How did you try to add the subtitles?

Importing subtitles from speech recognition

Hi I have been using CS4 and have used the speech translation tool from an mpeg file . Is there any way of importing the speech transcript into subtitles and keeping the timings for the speech. I know i can import the text into encore but i need a version that can be put online that includes subtitles.
Is there any other way other than putting the text into titles?

True Subtitles can be used in Encore, during the authoring phase. There are many programs that can convert text to proper Subtitles. I would post to the Encore Forum, for recommendations on these, plus comments on how to implement what you have the best possible way. Several Encore users use Subtitles often, and know the ins-n-outs. They can direct you to the proper programs, and to the things to watch out for.

Subtitles are too complex.

I' am making a DVD using all image files from CaptionMax. See post from yesterday:

Anyway in just a test of the whole subtitle thing I only imported 1 subtitle track and tried to burn a folder and/or image file and got a message telling me that my one track is too complex. I'm going to need seven more, so if you think it's complex now??? All I did is set my first play to Timeline 1 with the one track set to display. Now, I have another timeline in the project that I set as the end action of the first with its track set to display. Can there be an issue in that the two timelines are different aspects 1 is 16x9 and 2 is 4x3?
I don't think that my problem should be anything related to this thread:

since my subtitles are all index .tif files that are already as small as they're going to get. I've also used these type of files in our Sonic DVD Fusion system many times and never had this kind of issue.
I've read about other Encore issues with subtitles, but most of them seem related to text subtitles, what issues (if any) are there with image files?

The "too complex" error is probably the one mentioned in post #5 of the "EncoreDVD 2.0 Subtitles" thread. This is not an Encore issue, but a limitation set by the DVD-Video specification. It doesn't matter whether the subtitles are imported via a text script or as bitmap images; if any (horizontal) line exceeds 1440 bits it exceeds the spec maximum.

'Blocky' playback in Encore monitor

I have processed a 1080p/25p PPro CS5 project using the HD2SD workflow (AviSynth script, DGIndex, VirtualDub, HC Encoder) to produce a high-quality MPEG2 for import into Encore CS5. Viewing the MPEG in VLC player gives no problems and the quality is great.
I have an existing Encore project with subtitles created in Encore and chapter points. In order to preserve both subs and chapters and replace the older MPEG with the final version MPEG, I right-click on the MPEG in the Project window and choose Replace Asset, and replace it with the final version MPEG. This is when things get ugly. Now when I play back the timeline in the monitor window, it is very blocky especially in darker areas and dissolves or dip to black.
I tried cleaning the Media Cache database which made no difference.
Any ideas what could cause this? I am in a panic as I have to take a master DVD for replication tomorrow...help!

- Yes, on replacing the asset, it is set to "do not transcode".
- I will try and output to a folder to check. Preview has been very reliable so far with this project until today. Nothing else on my machine had changed - no new hardware or software installed or changed.
- Yes the preview window is set to 100%.
- Tried creating a new project with just the HD2SD file...same problem.

Encore CS5 burns just 1 GB on bluray

Hello from Germany!
I can't burn all the H264 material on blu-ray. I created in Encore CS5 with subtitles. The project check doesn't show any problems, in preview everything works like I want to. Disc-info shows that 4,33 GB are needed, but encore burns just 1 GB.
May be somebody knows ...

Can't copy the screen-shot of my (main) project-panel (it is tiff), I write it down:

Improving the Subtitling Process

I have two linked suggestions for improving the subtitling process. I'm editing a video of Shakespeare's _Twelfth Night_, and I'd hoped that I could convert the script to subtitles. This was far from easy, but this can be fixed with two steps.
1. Enable import of subtitle TXT files that do _not_ have timecodes. Let us use TXT files where each subtitle is separated by a linefeed or CR. When we import them, let Encore create subtitles at a default duration of two to three seconds. We can then manually align those subtitles to the project timeline.
Currently, Encore requires that subtitle text files have formatted timecodes. Well, I can't imagine how one would have the timecodes for each line of dialogue _before_ bringing them into Encore. We don't sit and type those timecodes into our text files. Your own tutorials tell us that this job's frequently shopped out because it's tedious: well, if Encore could import simple text files, and we could move the titles around like video clips, it'd be a lot less tedious.
Another reason to allow us to avoid entering timecodes is that there's really no easy way to type them in. I attempted to create a timecode-delimited file of the _Twelfth Night_ script; I imported the text into Excel, and tried to use Excel to create the timecodes for two-second-line subtitles. Sadly, Excel does NOT format for video timecode. It formats time as hh:dd:ss, but a) it dosn't inclde frames and b) it uses colons instead of semicolons. I _was_ able to get around this limit, with a bit of work. But frankly, if Encore could simply import a simple TXT file, I would have saved a lot of work.
2. Enable the user to see the project's audio files _as a waveform_ in the timeline, as in Premiere Pro.
As I said, we could take the subtitles, and stretch them to match the soundtracks. It's a lot easier to match them _visually_, against the waveforms of the audio. If there's a way to see audio timelines as waveforms in Encore, I've been unable to find it.
With my two suggestions above, users would be able to a) import a simple text file, and have Encore create subtitles, and b) align the subtitles to the audio files easily and efficiently.

I applaud your thoughtful suggestions. I suspect we might end up at different places in what we would pick (if we were the decision makers at Adobe).
Part of my reaction is the practical belief that Encore is what it is because adobe had and has a deal with sonic to use their authorcore, and that this is both a benefit and a problem for Adobe to tailor encore as it might like. And Premiere is the more likely application to have such functions added. I can imagine somethikng like hitting the asterisk key in time to music (which adds markers), but where we're adding a special subtitle marker. Then this can be exported with the timecodes, and added to the text file.
I wonder if this is part of what the transcription function is intended to be.
I also believe that After Effects with its scripting support is the better option. I believe there are already scripts that can import a text file into separate layers, and I suspect this could be set with the starting time code you want. But the goal is not a subtitle video/ it is an importable subtitle file for Encore.

Favourite fonts used for your DVD project subtitles?

I would like to know which fonts people here use as subtitle fonts mostly on their dvd projects. Which fonts through Encore, or as subtitle images, look the best and most efficient and clear? Mention also font sizes and other specs if you will.
Let me know. Having a rather normal set of fonts at the moment in use, I might be going with Encore subtitles for Verdana at the moment, 24 - 28pts, BOLD. The only other one I'm considering at the moment might be Arial Black. 86% from the top.
Better ones in mind? Should I go with something else? Suggestions...

Smooth subtitle text edges?

Is there a way to make smooth subtitles in Encore? It seems like the normal subtitle option in Encore makes the edges of the subtitle text so strict, that it doesn't look smooth. Is there a trick to achieve smoother subtitles like with smooth antialiasing with the Encore's own subtitles? If not, are there certain fonts that you use in Encore that look smoother than the others, please share?
Or do you need to import the subtitles as images to get them look smoother, or are the same restrictions applied there as well what comes to the antialiasing? Thanks.

H.264 Blu Ray

Has anyone successfully made an H.264 1920x1080 BluRay disk with Encore? Please don't say that you made a plain-vanila BD-R with one timeline on that was about five minutes in length. I mean, did anyone really excersise the product in that particular application?
My project with 11 H.264 1920x1080 clips would throw all kinds off errors at me, including but not limited to:
- "decoder not installed" when importing an asset #10 or #11 out of 11 total. The same assets import fine into a brand-new encore project. All assets exported from PPro CS3 with the 1920x1080 High Quality preset for H.264 Blu-Ray.
- "format error" when having more than one audio clip on the same timeline. the same clips work fine on separate timelines.
- "out of memory" when burning BD folder; I mean, sure, my system only has 4G of memory, granted, Encore can only use 2G.
- "error 6" when exporting BD folder.
All of the above errors happen on three different computers running Windows XP Professional SP2 32bit, Windows Vista Ultimate 32bit, Windows Vista Ultimate 64bit. I know the later is not officially supported, but the first two 32bit OS'es were - last time I checked.
So, has anyone succeeded in doing real-world AVC BD-MV production with Encore CS3 yet?
I will try re-encoding into MPEG2 25Mbs, and if that doesn't work, I will shelf this idea (and Encore) for a while, and remain in SD DVD world until this application becomes usable.

Well, instead of encoding one media file per chapter, I ended up encoding the entire title into one large media file. It imports fine and builds ok, sort of. The thing is that I can burn it directly to disk, but if I try building an image file out of Encore project, my whole physical memory on the machine goes down to zero about half way, and from then on things get REAAAALLLYYYYYY SSSSLLLLLOOOOOWWWWW. Eventually, I have to shut down the machine - the progress bar moves a tick in half an hour and this is just not practical.
I remember back in Encore 1.0 days there was a huge issue with building an Encore project with subtitles. I would give up after 2-3 hours of staring at "Building subtitles" message. I finally contacted Adobe tech support and expressed my concerns. They asked for the project file and assets, which I provided, then went silent for several days, then said that it all built fine on their system, and I just have to give it more time. So, I decided to give it more time. I gave it 48 hours, and it built in 28. Now, 28 hours of build time for a 1.5 hours DVD project is unreasonable. Adobe support did not buy 28 hours as being unreasonable. But what do I know - version 1.5 comes around, and the same project builds in about an hour. Suddenly, 28 hours is unreasonable.
I was hoping that with CS3 we would not go back to version 1.

Version compatibility issues

After installing 2.0, will Encore projects from previous versions open seamlessly into 2.0? I'm in the middle of a large project--is it safe to change horses mid-stream?

You guys really never had any problems with 1.0 or 1.5? 2 out of 3 friends of mine (professional DVD authors, as myself), had to abandon Encore because of bugs. And yes, as a programmer, I certainly do know when a program has bugs, as opposed to my own errors. I'm not saying I have never had problems that weren't my own fault, obviously I have.
Encore 1.51, on an ongoing basis would randomly corrupt files, menus, subtitles etc., which caused me to do over days of work more than once. Almost everyone I know has had these corruption problems, and I have seen it mentioned in these forums many times. These problems happened on at least 6 different PCs, with Encore being reinstalled on some of the machines a couple of times. Drivers/compability issues don't apply to most of the problems (for instance simply closing a working project and then reopening it the next day, and it becoming corrupt, wouldn't be a compatibility issue). I use many high-end animation programs, graphic design tools and interactive media creation tools without problems like I have witnesssed with Encore.
As for subtitling issues - I thought that was clear how I knew that the fault was within Encore and not the user. I'm not talking about simple overlap issues and incorrect coding issues, which I have had, I'm talking about Encore deleting all subtitles throughout the project, once you completed adding them.
Question for those that disagree with me, who say that Encore 1.51 works great - have any of you done really in-depth interactive projects? (I am asking seriously, not sarcastically) For instance, I did not have problems on simple DVDs with 2 or 3 menus and 10 or 11 linked videos. When Encore seemed to start corrupting my files was when I was working on educational DVDs with 30-40 menus, 50+ linked videos, with each video having subtitles in english and spanish, as well as audio in English and Spanish. {Encore advertises that all this should not be a problem]. So I'm asking seriously - has anyone worked on really complicated projects, with many subtitle and audio tracks, that took weeks or months to complete - without any corruption problems? I'd actually like to know - I'm not putting it out there to be rude.
If Adobe can admit that since 1.0 and 1.5 were early versions of the product, and, not surprisingly, had some issues which have now been fixed, then I'll gladly upgrade. If Adobe's official position is that Encore NEVER had any bugs, and the only possible errors were on the user end, then I am not interested in upgrading.

I am trying to import subtitles from a software called Aegisub to Adobe Encore, but i am receiving this error message:
The software that is used to decode the media is not available on this system. Installing the correct decoders for the files you are working with may help to correct the problem.
I have exported the subtitles as an Encore text file but it still won't allow me attach these to my video. I have exported the video from Premiere as an H.264 and that slots into Encore just fine, i just need to use Encore to attach the subtitles.
Can anyone tell me what i might be doing wrong?

Thanks Stan. I think this is probably the answer but seeing as i am doing this at work, it is telling me the action was stopped because it needs to be checked by an administrator.
If i manage to succeed, i shall let you know. I was trying to import as an asset, wrongly, so this is probably going to be the solution.
