Encore CS4 No BD Dual Layer Support?

I am curious if anyone is using any other software that plays well with PPro CS4 for BD Dual Layer authoring? I believe Adobe has mislead in the advertising of this feature. It is clearly stated that Encore CS4 supports dual layer burning.

You may be using the wrong burner or media or both. Dual layer BD support is generally fragile on all ends, so anything is possible. I've never tried this, but Nero or other dedicated burning tools might just be able to burn a folder structure to BD DL.

  • Using Dual Layer DVD with iDVD

I have a 2 hour movie that I have imported into iDVD. I put in a dual layer DVD-R, but iDVD insists that my two hour movie can fit on a single layer DVD-R. Yes, I'm sure it can crunch the heck out of it, but I want the quality to be high--THAT is why I BOUGHT a dual layer support drive!
Is there any way I can tell iDVD to not crunch it down to 4.5 Gigs, but to just 9 Gigs?

Hey, you used the word "experiment" twice in the same forum which gets you twenty points but you lose 10 points since it was for the same experiment.
I get twenty (40-20) just for writing this response. Points are redeemable at the nearest refrigerator for hoppy beverages providing that you speak nicely to the member of the household that stocks said items, (or you can play back audio of yourself speaking compliments, but it must be recorded in 16 bit audio, as 12 bit audio will only buy you grief).

  • Dual Layer 'Navigaion Failure' on DVD Build in Encore CS4

    All,
I've searched the forum and see several post regarding dual layer DVD burning, but none recent.
I'm trying to burn a dual layer DVD ( Memorax DVD+R DL), using Encore CS4.   Everything encodes fine, but when Encore starts to actually burn the DVD, I get an error message "navigation build failed' (or something like that, I don't have it in front of me right now).  And yes, I did select the correct size DVD setting.  :-)
Does anyone had this trouble or have any suggestions?
    TIA,
    jd

    JD,
I would scrap the Memorex blank discs, and use Verbatim instead. Memorex has a very unpopular business model - buy the absolutely cheapest media from whomever and emboss the Memorex label onto it. In spindles of 100, users have reported up to 4 different mfgrs. stuff. One might get 10 discs that work, and then 10 that flat do not. There are several utilities that will tell you who the actual mfgr. is and the lot number. I just use the free burning utility, ImgBurn, as it will read the blank disc and report.
Now, Memorex is an easy target for me, and one of the "usual suspects," so there could be something else going on. Just in case there is, please give the full details of your Project, with Asset types, specs., and how your navigation is setup, and especially the Layer Break.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • How to break layer(manually) in encore cs4

    Hi,
My  project is ready to burn and wish to know the procedure of how we can  break layer manually in encore cs4 while burning  8.54 gb dual layer  dvd.
    Thanks in advance.
    Vinay

When you go to Burn to Disc, you should have a dialog screen, where you can choose "Set Layer Break Automatically," or "Set Layer Break Manually." The exact syntax might be different, but you will get the picture.
Now, some with later versions (do not recall if CS4 was in this group), have encountered issues, where the manual Layer Breaks were disregarded. There are a few posts on this, and one was initiated by Jim Simon. You might want to look over those threads.
Also, many use the free ImgBurn to do the physical Burn, and like its manual Layer Break setting function better than Encore.
Personally, I have never had a Layer Break issue, but much of that probably stems from my particular Projects, and perhaps a bit of luck.
    Good luck to you,
    Hunt

  • Burnning dual layer dvd Encore CS5.5 errors out.

Here is the greatest error I have ever seen.
I got to burn a dual layer dvd transcoded from AVCHD 1080i with fallowing settings.
Edited footage in PPro and send to Encore via Dynamic link, created dvd project using Mpeg2 with 9mbps, Dolby 192 for Audio.
File size to be burned on dvd is 5.67gb, aprox 1 hour 10 min transcoded with 9mbps, 720x40 wide screen, audio is 192kbps Dolby.
There are three menus one is main and tow sceen selection menus, noting fancy everything as default. menus linked as usual nothing fancy and and it is very basic.
All assets, that used for motion menus and main video is transcoded fine, but when it gets to put dvd together I get this error
Encore starts organizing videos for disk and after that it gets to this above and thats it. Press ok Build progress box gives fail message and option to Ok it. After pressing Ok button this box goes away to build panel.
I have tried to change an Automatic layer break to manual still get the same error, I have tried a custom layer break and still get the same error again, I have tried dvd, and an image, and folder for dvd, still the same error there to. I have redone project from scratch and still got the same result.
However previously I have burned many Dual layer dvds using the same method described, and same settings described, and never had this problem.
Nothing on the PS was changed except the updates installed regularly.
Anybody have any Idea what is this all about? Because I just burned 16 Blu Ray discs, and 16 Dual layer discs on one of the project, and next one a day latter this happens.

I'm having the same problem. not once did it, the encore was automatically break in the case of dual layer dvd. now he does not. I mark the box DUAL LAYER 8.54gb, do DVD disc or image or folder, or change the marking of the layer break from automatic tomanual, and it does not. in the end he always gives the message: duallayer requerid.
wanted to know how to do this manually break, because even in the manual or here on the website of adobe, has no suchinformation. does not show clearly how to manually break. please if someone can give a help, thank you.

  • Dual Layer DVD Support

Does anyone know if the current iBook G4 14" (Dual USB, 1.42GHz) that comes with a SuperDrive standard, supports dual layer DVD media? I'm trying to find out on my system in System Profiler and in Toast drive features, but I can't seem to find out anywhere.
DVD Drive: MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-845E, with support for R,-R,RW,-RW

Theoretically, the UJ-845 is capable of burning dual-layer DVD+Rs, according to Panasonic/Matshita's specs. Apple disabled this feature in the firmware, however, in order to maintain product distinction between the iBooks and the Powerbooks. The dual layer-capable Powerbooks actually use a different model drive entirely, IIRC. As far as I know, there is no way to patch the drive to enable dual layer burning.
Right now the Macs with dual layer burning capability are the new Powerbooks, the new iMac, and the Power Mac G5.

  • Will DVD Studio Pro support dual layer media

I have a project that is 1 hour and 46 minutes long. DVD Studio Pro 2 has built the project but it reports that a 4.7 DVD will not hold the build. Other than the Data Meter, is there a way to find out how much the project is over 4.7? What are my options? Is it possible to lower the compression settings to get this to fit without sacrificing too much quality? Does DVD Studio Pro 2 support dual layer burning? Sorry about asking these questions, but I am on my laptop which does not have the program or help/manual and I would like to find out ASAP so I can order dual layer media if that will work.
How sketchy is playback of home burned dual media in ordinary DVD players?

You should be able to get your project on a DVD-5, you would need to adjust your encoding settings and depending on the footage you may not see a big hit (You can build the project to see how far over it actually is)
First if you have not made the audio AC3, do so, will save room
As to the video , take a look here for calculator
    http://www.videohelp.com/calc.htm
Usually I tweak a bit lower than the calulator. For instance if it says an average rate of 5.2, set you average to 5, chances are you will not see the differene between 5 and 5.2 and can save you reencoding heartache/headache down the road. Max rates really should not be higher than 7.4 or so - do not set max video rates to 9.636 as shown in the calculator. In theory it works, in practice can cause playback issues.
How sketchy is playback of home burned dual media in ordinary DVD players?
+R DL works fairly well DVD SP 2 did not support DL burning if I recall correctly, but if you have Toast you can burn from there.

  • DVD doesn't transcode or build in Encore CS4

    Hi,
I am building a DVD which is 1hour and 55mins long with chapters and 4 menus. I exported the edited video and audio from Premier Pro into Encore where I then made the DVD menus etc.
When I tried to preview it, it crashed 8 times out of 10! But that's another story!
So I decided just to try and build it, there were no errors and it began to Transcode the premier pro file (video). That took well over 5 hours, and then it started on the (audio), it got to about a 1/5 of the way and there was no change for an hour or so, so I thought I'd just leave it overnight to see if any progress is made. It hadn't. I cancelled it this morning and followed some advice on the forums to Transcode the files that needed transcoding first, in this case, the Premier Pro project and an mp3 audio that I was using to play in the background for the menus. The Audio transcoded quite quickly, but again the video is going ever so slow, I've left it to do it's thing while I'm at work, but it had only progressed a smidgen!
This is my first time at creating a DVD with Premier Pro and Encore, so would appreciate any help possible as to why it may taking so long/showing no progress!
    Many Thanks

  • Windows 8 Encore CS4 Blu-ray BSOD

I'm getting a BSOD in Encore CS4 when I try to build a blu-ray project. I have an HP laptop with an LG USB blu-ray burner. When I click build, even to build just an image, and then change from "DVD" to "Blu-Ray", there is a hang then a BSOD. My crashdump indicates that pxhlpa64.sys is the culprit.
This seems to be relevant, BUT the solution is to upgrade CS6 to new patch:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/4672190
I'm up-to-date in CS4, so that doesn't help. However, it sounds related and I'm hoping that my copy of CS4 Production Premium is still supported.
My version of pxhlpa64.sys is 3.0.78.0. WU can't find any updates as far as I can tell. I have not installed any drivers for my LG BE12LU38 Super Multi Blue, but it seems to be recognized and there are no updates via WU.
    Here is my crashdump analysis:

  • Another Dual Layer Break Issue

    Encore CS5.1
After about 12 hours, I am no further forward... Having trawled through a number of posts on this and similar subjects I am really up against the buffers.
The requirement is simple - getting Abobe Encore CS5.1 to "see" my request to use a Chapter Marker it gives me as one of three in the Manual Option section during the build process.
I had no issues with DL authoring in CS4, but CS5 is giving me a lot of grief.
    The outline:
I have a timeline of 67 minutes with 6 Chapter Markers. The first two are within the first 10 minutes, CH3 at 36 minutes, CH4 at 38 minutes, CH5 at 41 minutes and CH6 at 61 minutes.
I am using Verbatum DL +R DVDs (I have used no other these last three years) with a write speed of x4 or x2.4.
Once I have built the NEW project, imported the video and placed the Chapters as above (all except CH3 at fade-to-black points) I select 8.54 GB dual layer, Side one, Manual and proceed.
At the invitation to select the manual point Encore offers me CH3, CH4 and CH5. No matter what I select, it places the break point at about 33 minutes (about half way) and in doing so screws up my own Chapters by placing it's own (invisible in the timeline) chapter thereby shuffling all mine. As a result I lose sections or get repeated sections.
I tried building to Folders and using ImgBurn. This confirms the insistance on using a halfway point - same too building to an Image the chapter and cell are never my selected, always a cell at about the halway point.
Adobe Encore is not recognising my selection (at its own invitation).
I have deleted the project and cache - rebooted and built the project from scratch importing the video - creating the timeline and adding the Chapters - always the same.
I have followed some of the points given using Folders in ImgBurn - it simply is not working for me. It's almost like Encore is screwing the build and the build is the same as though the settings are held in cache.
As mentioned, I have cleared all previous builds and their files and deleted the media cache with no joy.
I'm getting to the point whereby the only choice left to me is to split the project timeline and build the project as two separate DVDs (as the timeline is only just over the capacity for a single sided DVD (3 minutes).
As for PCG Edit - doesn't seem to want to run on my workstation (PC i7 24GB RAM - 3 separate drives in RAID combo and separate OS SSD).
Can someone help me find out what has happened to Encore as it does appear that after every "upgrade" somthing gets a little worse judging by my CS4 experience.
    Many Thanks

    Hi Stan,
    Many thanks...
    Yes, running "as admin"
Not quite with you "...too much material for a layer."
I often run to about 65 mins to just fit a single layer - perfect, but this project ran over - and I can't take anything out.
I am loath to change the sample rate as my SD quality (from a combo of AVCHD and MPEG2) Sony NX5 and Z5 really hit the spot for max res in SD (9.4 Mb/s). The Encoded spec for Encore is legal (or so it would seem) for Encore in a single layer (no issues or errored DVDs), and as I said in the OP I had no issues like this in CS4 (yes, apart from the known buggy stuff).
But why would Encore offer me a number of break points in placed chapters only to ignore them consistantly?
    Another point:
My first build went through and honoured the chapters, but put the layer change halfway - but didn't screw the build. There was a production reason I had to change the timeline content - one shot change of the same duration. I would certainly settle for that at this stage. Interestingly, I built to Image and did an IMGBurn (as I do do for all DLs). But as you say, IMGBurn is choking on what's been passed to it from Encore. I am trying to replicate that first build.
By the way, all my Chapters in the timeline preview perfectly in Encore - it's just when I ask for the build it all goes wrong (seemingly).
Many thanks again Stan. Appreciate your reply.

  • Encore Cs4 creating chapters

    Gentlemen !
    Windows Ultimate
    CS4 Encore
I have a 3 hours and 25mins video (NTSC AVI)
Basically its a family video, which includes an Intro, dancing part, dinner and ending
I wanted to make a DVD disk
So I imported my video as an asset and created a timeline for it
Now how can I divide the my into at least 4 parts
Basically I want to have 4 chapters on the main menu , like the first chapter would be the intro, the second chapter would be the dancing part and so on...
But I must have at least 4 buttons on the main menu and each button represents a scene
    Thank You !

The best option for such a long video is to create it as 4 videos, divided as the 4 sections you want.  Then you link a button to each of the videos for the individual sections, and you create a playlist to "play all."  (You add one more button for the play all.
With the one timeline you will have, you set a chapter marker at the beginning of each of the sections (chapter 1 is set by default in Encore).  Be sure you set the chapter markers before you transcode.  (Chapter markers have to be at a gop boundary.  Encore will take care of that as long as you set the chapter marker before transcoding.)
Your "play all" button will link to that timeline.  You will create 4 chapter playlists (CHAPTER playlists, not a "playlist") with one (only) of the 4 chapters in a chapter playlist.  Your section buttons will link to those chapter playlists.
Are you planning a dual layer disk?  That's a lot of video for a single layer.  Layer breaks sometimes create issues with long timelines.

  • Movie length and dual layer burning - please help!

I just posted this question in the iMovie forums but thought it might be more appropriate here:
    Hi everyone,
I've just finished my first iMovie project, and the total movie length is 2hours, 31 minutes. I've noticed from a few other posts that people say the maximum movie length that iMovie can export or that will fit on a dvd is 120 minutes.
I do however have a dual layer dvd burner on my iMac - does this mean I will be able to export/share my iMovie project to iDVD and fit the whole movie on an 8gb dual layer disc? if so, could someone please give me some advice on the best way to go about doing it?
I'm relatively new to Macs and haven't burnt a dual layer dvd yet. I'm sure that I've burnt projects of this length before on a single layer dvd using Premiere Pro and Adobe Encore DVD, but I suppose iDVD must have its own length limitations on what can fit on a single layer disc.
Anyway I hope someone out there can answer my question,
    thanks!

    Welcome to the Discussions Art,
If you use System Profiler (Apple logo/About This Mac/More Info...) and see that the burner is supported like here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301556
Then when you are in iDVD the Status window should look like shown here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301557
You can make a 4 hr DVD if you set the encoder preference to Quality (limited to 2 hr if on Performance), your set!

  • Dual Layer Disc Does not Play in Set Top DVD Player

Problem: Dual Layer Disc Does not Play in Set Top DVD Player
Solution: If your burner supports having its bitsetting changed, find a utility and change it to include DVD-ROM.
    Additional Information:
DL (Dual Layer) is currently only a +R format. This is a serious problem, as you will find that on older players - and a lot of new ones - there is no +R support. It is not official, and therefore useless for any professional application.
By changing the bitsetting of your burner, it allows DLs (Dual Layer discs) to be burned with a book type of DVD-Rom and thus readable by many more players.
DVD player support drops off exponentially if your burner doesn't support bitsetting, allowing you to change the book type of your disc from DL to DVD-Rom. The DL book type will play on most newer software DVD players but not set top players.
If you've burned a dual layer disc without changing the bitsetting, it is a permanent semi-coaster as it will only play on your computer. I understand that newer DL burners are coming with firmware that automatically sets the book type.
Encore offers no control over book-type. My understanding is that this is a burner-specific parameter: some burners support allow themselves to be set and others do not.
Bitsetting (setting the Book Type) is specific to individual burners. There are some 3rd party software utilities out there that do a good job. The best thing to do is do a Google Search for your specific burner and find what works for yours.
LiteOn has a book type utility available for its DL burners:
I believe DVDInfoPro can set this on burners which support it.
Note: I would caution everyone who updates their firmware to check their bitsetting before burning DL discs. I don't know if it always returns to its default but it did in my case.
Bitsetting is done prior to burning the disk and generally only needs to be set once (unless like me, you update the firmware of your burner). The book type identifies to the player what type of disk is in it. Most players will play DVD-Roms with no problem. However, the book type of a DL disk is DVD+R DL as opposed to DVD-Rom and few players can read that.

Some general comments about the OP's several questions
Remember that reading a burned disc is not part of the original, core specification to play a DVD... so while most players do, now, they are really not required to do so to be able to play a replicated disc
This may (probably is) even more so with dual layer discs... the disc material is different, and a player that will happily read a replicated disc may have problems with a burned disc
There are many messages scattered in the forum, over the past several years, about brands of disc that are better... due both to overall quality control and the type of dye on the disc that is burned by the laser... with the bottom line being that not all discs are going to play in all players with 100% success
As for studio discs... there is software out there that costs many thousands of dollars which do many (up to 9?) encoding passes to get the best, and smallest, possible result to fit more on a disc

  • Create BluRay on DVD9 with Encore CS4?

    1. Can Encore CS4 create a DVD9 in BluRay format that will play on any BluRay player? I listened to a podcast that Toast could do this, so I'm hoping it the new CS4 Encore can.
    2. Any links to instructions for above?
    3. Which codec to go with? I also have Squeeze 5, which just got a great review against the Adobe and Apple compressors for H.264. If time is not an issue, which format will give me the best quality?
    Thanks!

    Miseree,
As Joe said, you can't directly burn a BluRay project to a regular DVD from Encore.  However, you can do it and if you read through this thread, you can see how it was worked out and apparently one can even burn about 60 minutes of BluRay materal to a dual layer DVD.
    http://forums.creativecow.net/thread/145/862674
Right now it's a little more complex to burn a BluRay DVD that will play on a Play Station 3, though.  You still need a BluRay player to play the disk.
Let me know how it works out.
