Encore CS5 hangs during trancoding

Hello
I have the problem with Encore CS5 that the transoding of my project hangs after every asset. I have a rather big BluRay project with several Premiere projects and several menues.
When I started the Encore project from scratch, the first time the encoding worked fine, one asset after the other.
No I have amended some of my menues and made some small changes in one of my Premiere projects. No the transcoding stops (hangs) after each asset and does not continue until I change to another application (e.g. Windows Explorer) and back to Encore.
Does anybody have an idea what is the problem?
I'm using Vista 64, with 8 G RAM on a PC with a Intel Core2 Quad CPU Q9450, Grafics NVIDIA GeFore 8800 GT.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Hunt,
After starting my Encore projected new, the problems did not occur anymore. Out of that, it seems that the problems are not related to the audio format.
But I have another suspicion what could have caused the problems.
When I shut down the Encore session with witch I had the problem, Encore was hanging too. In the Windows Task-Manager I found a Photoshop process. Since I had no Photoshop window open, I killed that process and in the same moment the Encore session closed.
I remember that I have used Photoshop - from within Encore - to make changes on some menues.
After this I also cleaned out the temp-Directory before I tried it the next time.
If I have time, I will try to reproduce the problem. I will post the result here.

    1. unistall CS5 package , reinstall CS5 package Production Premium. Reinstall all updates. Still get the problem.
    2. Problem seems to be pop-up screen do not accept any 'click' to input answer to Encore CS5

Thanks again pointing out the  Adobe CC Cleaner URL
When I said CCleaner previously, I was refering to a program that clean out garbages from PC (broken links, shortcuts, temp files, etcetera..)
But late on, I have found out Adobe CC Cleaner (for Creative Cloud and CS5, CS6...) for cleaning Adobe craps after un-install.
I just wish the hotline could mention it and not having me to swim to find out that tool does exists saving some precious time.
Here is the status and what I have done to fix the problem:
...yeah, I was shooting in the dark...
    1. Uninstall completely Adobe Premiere Production CS5 (remove preferences)
    2. Run Adobe CCleaner (choose "all")
    3. Shutdown PC, reboot and Cleanup and Defragment C: drive
    4. Re-install completely Adobe Premiere Production CS5 (all products)
    5. Re-apply completely Adobe Premiere Production CS5 (all products)
(note: for some reason, I need to do it three times to get the complete updates done, just retry and no changes between retry)
    6. Result : PremierePro still working fine, still hangs on Encore
(Encore dialog screen was frozen as before from the begining and I had to use "Window-Task-Manager" to "end-the-task" of Encore)
7.Conclusion: the problem is on the PC not AdobePremiereProduction
    8. Decision: Restore previous checkpoint of Window-7 Professional components
    9. Redone steps 1,2,3,4,5
    10. The result is the same as mentioned in point 6 and the conclusion is the same as mentioned in point 7.
    11. Ultimate Decision: Ground-zero style resfresh (see the follwoing steps)
    12. Separate Data from Window-7 (Move out all data from PC and unplug all connected portable hard drives
    13. Factory restore of Window-7 Professional using DVD-rescue (hard drive C: wiped out and reformatted)
    14. Apply all Updates for Window-7 Professional (over 121 updates, over 700Mb and many shutdown-reboot)
    15. Reconfigure Wireless for connecting to Internet
    16. Re-Install McAfee Antivirus
    17. Re-Install some usefull Softwares (Microsoft Office 2010 Professional, etcetera... Shareport for wireless USB Printer)
    18. Lot of Canon and Sony Softwares not re-installed because not used and not needed for now
    19. Clean install AdobePremiereProduction CS5 (no need to run Adobe CCleaner)
    20. Apply all updates for AdobePremierProduction CS5 (result is intermittent and have to retry few times to get it completed)
    21. Apply one by one updates for every single Adobe product to get it done\
    22. Shutdown and cleanup C: drive and defragment C; drive
    22. From now on, I am sure to have a FRESH an CLEAN PC with  a CLEAN CS5

  • Media Encoder CS5 hangs during render

I've created a project in Premiere Pro CS5 (64-bit) on Windows 7 Pro x64.  It's 28 minutes long.  When I try to render it in Media Encoder CS5 (to YouTube Widescreen HD), it gets about 2/3 of the way through and then stops.  It doesn't close, it just freezes.  Not always at the same place (I've tried four times).  If I click on Stop Queue, it asks if I'm sure and when I say Yes (click on "No," actually), it hangs and Windows presents its "Close the program?" dialog, followed by a dialog saying, "PProHeadless.exe has stropped working" and asking if I want to close that, too.  I say yes and return to the desktop.  I modified the render to VBR 2-pass from VBR 1-pass, to see if it would at least get through the first pass without hanging, but it didn't.
I've created dozens of projects with these tools, most shorter but some longer, and have never had this problem.  Any suggestions?  Thanks.

    Hi Michael,
Sorry to hear you're having problems with Adobe Media Encoder.  I'd like to get some more information about the problem so I can better understand your workflow, and potentially try to recreate the problem.  For what it's worth, I often import files of different resolutions without any problem, so I want to find out what's different about how you're using AME.
Apologies for the long list of questions; the small details can be important.
-- After you import the first file, what else do you do in AME?  Change the preset?  Change the settings?  Change the output destination?
-- What are the properties of the files that are causing the problem?  You said it happens on "non-standard" files, but can you describe the specifications for one or more files that cause the problem?  Please include file type, length, frame rate, frame dimensions, field order (if applicable), alpha mode (if applicable), and audio type and rate.  If you know more the bitrate, both video and audio, that would be nice, too.
-- If any of the files are small enough, could you post a couple online that I could try on my machine?
-- How were these files generated?  What application created them?
-- Where are the files stored? A local drive, a network drive, a removeable drive (USB or Firewire), etc.?
-- Which Adobe application or suite do you have installed?  AME a limited set of options if you're using Flash or Web Premium compared to Master Collection, Production Premium, Premiere Pro, or After Effects.

  • Encore CS5 Hanging at Transcoding When Burning Transcoded Project to DVD Disc

    Hi
I'm a bit stuck and hope for some help.
I have a NTSC DVD project, 4.1 GB in size, which has previously built to DVD Disc, and I have just tweaked a couple of the menu buttons, tried to build to disk again, and the process hangs at "Transcoding..."
Now, this transcoding phase isn't even needed. All the assets have already been transcoded and the project tab shows that this is the case and they will not be transcoded.
I have saved a new project file, cleared out my cache and media cache, and even moved them to a different drive to make sure they were created again in empty folders.
I'm up against a deadline and my PAL project worked perfectly first time. So I'm at a loss at what to try next.
    Can you help?
    Many thanks
    Jim

  • Encore CS5 hangs when opening project

I have read posts about this problem already and the solutions proposed so far seem to do with changing or erasing cache files, fiddling with Premiere Pro, etc.  Frankly, I don't understand any of that!!  Can someone suggest
something more direct?  What happens is that when I try to open old (about 2 months old) Encore projects, they  hang at between 7 and 13 %.  It is happening with 5 different projects that all worked fine in November.   They are on two different hard drives, and in separate folders.  Thanks for the help.

Some of the suggestions are general and may apply to  multple projects, and to causes that could affect multiple projects/drives. For example, the "run as administrator" method.
Can you create a new project? Can you save, exit Encore, and reopen it?

  • Encore CS5 Hangs/Crashes on Import

    I'm using a desktop
(dual Xeon quad core processors) with 12 gigs of ram and Windows7.  I have a Radeon video card and use a Matrox RTX2 for capture.  Regardless what or how I import, I get the import and preparing transcode settings windows alternately flashing.  The import as timeline finishes, while the preparing transcode settings remains at 0% and the system locks up.  It ultimately give me the "Encore has stopped working window".
Any assistance will be greatly appreciated!

One step at a time...  Ha, ha!
I tried creating a new encore file, without importing any video.
To do that, you had to have Encore open and created a new project.  Encore opens the project and does not crash, right?  To do that, it goes through the "loading transcode settings," apparently successfully.
I then imorted one of Encore's menus - it crashed!
When you say imported a menu, you loaded a menu from the Encore library panel?  By double clicking?
Have you tried running Encore as administrator?

Create an ISO (Encore) or folder on your hard drive (Encore or Premiere Elements) and then use the FREE http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download to write files or folders or ISO to disc for DVD or BluRay (send the author a PayPal donation if you like his program)
Imgburn will read the ACTUAL disc brand from the disc, which is not always the same as the box label (Memorex is notorious for buying "anything" and putting it inside a Memorex box)
When you write to disc with Imgburn, use the SLOWEST possible speed setting, so your burner has the best chance to create "good, well formed" laser burn holes... since no DVD player is required to read a burned disc, having a "good" one from a high quality blank will help

  • Encore CS5 Blu-Ray Preview Playback Issues / Authoring Issues

    Hello,
    I'm using Adobe Encore CS5 on a Mac Pro (Nehalem) 2 x 2.26 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon w/ 8 GB Ram on Mac OS X 10.5.8.
I've recently upgraded to CS5 after having no luck using CS3 to make Blu-Ray discs.  So far my experience has been a little disappointing -- it feels like they still haven't got it right.  Below is a list of my issues thus far -- perhaps some of you have run into similar things:
    - When importing MATROX encoded H.264 Blu-Ray files Encore CS5 hangs up.  I tried this with a 54 minute encoded file.  Instead I re-transcoded using the CS5 Media Encoder to the Main Concept H.264.  This worked fine, although the import still hung up for several minutes before anything made it's way into the project.
    - When I try opening my already existing project with a 54 minute video inside it hangs up and takes as long as 3-5 minutes to finally open successfully.  This seems to happen consistently.
    - After rendering motion menus and rendering them in the project the playback preview stutters.  It's very steppy throughout as the video plays in the background.  I even tried authoring a disc and playing it in a Blu-Ray player -- it did the same thing once authored.  I've tried re-encoding the video in Media Encoder and have found the problem persists.  Has anyone else experienced this with motion menus?  By the way, I'm transcoding @ 25mbps (max 30mbps) in the Media Encoder.
    - While trying to re-author my Blu-Ray the playback preview does not play audio on the main video when I click to play it.  I've tried re-importing the asset and previewing but this does not work.  I'm going to re-author the disc anyway to see if it plays right on the disc but can't understand why the preview doesn't work even if the Blu-Ray itself is fine (which it is).  I should add that the first time I authored this disc the audio was fine on the main video.  Preview was also fine.  So I'm not sure what's happening now - I haven't changed anything in the project.
    - Portions of my video on the authored video play back with slight stutter even though the source video (ProRes HQ QuickTime) does not.  Is this a problem with the Main Concept H.264 encode?  Should I try a 2-pass VBR transcode as another try (instead of 1-pass)?  My target bit rate is 25 mbps (with a max of 30 mbps).  That shouldn't be too high for a player to handle without stutter.  The stutter also happens in the same place every time so it makes me think it's the encode of the file itself that's the problem.
All in all these are mainly quirks about Encore that have begun to add up and frustrate me as a user.  It would be nice if these things just worked as they should.  But if anyone has ideas or can think of something I might be missing in all of this that would be great to hear.
    Thanks for reading.
    All the best,
    JD

As a follow up, I tried knocking down the number of chapters by 1/3 so there would be a total of 28 chapters instead of 41. As it turns out, the disc is still exiting the timeline and returning to the main menu at exactly the same point (which happens to be one second into a particular chapter of the timeline, just shy of 90 minutes into the timeline). It's as if Encore has split my single timeline into two timelines.
If it's of any help understanding what's happening, the entire timeline is 02;05;23;21 long. When Encore creates the Blu-ray disc, playback of the timeline ends at approximately 01;26;43;10. I then have to go to my Scenes menu and pick up where I left off as it's the only way to see the last ~39 minutes of the sequence.
As I mentioned, if I burn this as a standard definition (4.7GB) disc, it plays normally with no breaks. It's only if I burn it to a 25GB single-layer Blu-ray disc that I see the problem (using multiple Blu-ray players).
Thanks in advance for any light that can be shed on this problem.

  • Trancode burn hangs/crashes in Encore CS5 but works fine in CS4

    Hi,
I've been reading lots of stuff in the threads about Encore CS5 crashing at various times, and I wanted to see if someone could shed some light on my circumstances..
Windows 7, LG Blu-ray burner, everything always worked fine in CS4.
I had been using Encore CS4 to burn my Premier CS5 projects because I couldn't ever get Encore CS5 to work prior to the latest update..
I did a new project in CS5 and when I did a rough cut burn it worked ok..
Since then, no joy.. It imports it from PP to Encore (CS5) and starts rolling, but then seems to freeze along the way in transcoding and crash. If I load the same project saved by Encore CS5 and try burning to blu-ray in CS4 it transcodes, burns and works.. So it does seem to be some difference between Encore CS4 and CS5. I really want CS5 to work for the promise of not needing to transcode AVCHD, and make it look worse
Couple of things to note that may or may not matter:
I read somewhere that "blank space in the timeline" crashes Encore CS5 .. I mean really? I have a couple of gaps of black in the timeline when I switch sections, but this never caused a problem before, and this seems like a bug that Adobe just couldn't have could they? For real?
I have both CS4 and CS5 installed. Does this matter? I haven't uninstalled yet, because CS4 works, and CS5 doesn't.
I have a GTX 295 (not the 285 and I did the "hack" to load and take advantage of the GPU's with the mercury engine). Everything in Premier CS5 seems to work fine, but admittedly, the one time I did get Encore CS5 to work, this was not in enabled and now it is.. Could this really matter?
Right after I post this I'll be doing that roxio update thing, but I have a pretty fresh copy of Win 7, totally updated that I the only thing I do with it is use it for Premier, so the point is I don't have a bunch of junk installed and use to for all sorts of other stuff.
I really want to fix this because I have noticed that after CS4 transcodes and I burn the blu-ray, it doesn't seem to look as good.. And since nearly all my footage is in AVCHD, and it wouldn't need to transcode it, this not only saves time, it probably looks better, so this would be a super powerful feature of Encore CS5 I really want to take advantage of..
    Any ideas?

    Thanks for the tips..
I changed every file including the name of the project to have no spaces.. I also don't have any breaks in my sequence, I'm not using a timeline, I'm just importing the sequence straight into Encore...
I don't think the GTX 295 thing could be related the only issues I'm having are in Encore, not Premier Pro..
But I guess the news now is that everything seems to be working pretty well and it looks to be transcoding, but I keep getting a:
"Blu-ray Object: Sequence 01/Cozumel_2010.prproj, Export file not found"
The Sequence part is obviously the name of my project file..
I've been trying to read about why this would come up, but no one seems to have an simple answer.. I've cleaned the media cache and renamed the project, but the old project name gets the same error..
And here is the point, as stated before, I open the exact same Encore project in Encore CS4, and bingo everything works..

    HELP!

  • Encore CS5 freezes on "initiating transcoding" during startup

At the moment I am a very frustrated Encore CS5 user.  Help.
I cannot get Encore to open.  The program will start and when it gets to "initiating transcoding" it will become non responsive and the only way to stop it is to turn the power off on the computer.
I previously ran CS4 for at least a year on the same computer with no issues.  I upgraded to CS5 in early september and was able to successfully burn at least 2 projects. All other CS5 components work fine EXCEPT Encore.   This latest behavior seems to have started about two weeks ago.
    I've done the following
1- an earlier post suggested upgrading a roxio driver.  Did that - no change.
2-I've followed most of the simpler suggestions on the "Troubleshoot system errors and freezes | Adobe software on Windows (cpsid_82252) - including trying to wipe preferences (couldn't figure out how to do that on Encore - since it won't open!), creating a new administrative profile and updating every driver I could think of.  I did not yet try the more involved strategies such as selective startup.
3-I completely uninstalled CS4, Reinstalled CS5 and updated.  Encore opened once and will not open again.
Oh and I also called Adobe support - waited on hold for over an hour to speak to someone on a very lousy, almost inaudible connection only to be referred to the same document I'd already read on my own. I was told I could pay for support (which seems ludicrous given that the program won't even open and is brand new!) and was even willing to do that, but the support tech seemed to imply I should try uninstalling cs4 first.
So now I'm back at square one.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    My  computer is an HP
    windows 7
    pentium core i7 cpu 902 @ 2.67  2.67
    9 gb ram
    64 bit
with two 500gb drives and an external raid Terra.

You can try one more thing.
    Just enable your drive
try with other software to burn a small file(nero or any other software)
if it works, Install the roxio drivers from

I was able to run the installation for CS5 without any issues until it got to encore.  everything else installed without an issue but it refuses to install encore.  I have installed the same master collection on another machine, a little older than the new dell, and it installed flawlessly.  But on the new machine, no dice.

  • Kernel panic rendering AVCHD footage in Encore CS5 or CS6

I have an early 2008 Mac Pro running CS6 and 10.8.2. My usual workflow is burning two hour multi-cam live performances to DVD. Usually this is two cameras of DV, one camera of AVCHD, all in a DV timeline.
Lately I've been trying to burn DV timelines of nothing but AVCHD footage, and somewhere through the rendering process I always get a kernel panic. This happens with different projects, footage from different cameras (I'm using a Panasonic AG-AC130 or HMC40), whether I'm using Encore CS5 or CS6. The projects never finish. It seems to get 50-75% through rendering video before crashing. Rendering these projects on my MacBook Pro work just fine (though much slower). Timelines where it's not 100% AVCHD are still working fine.
I had began having kernel panics unrelated to Encore, but traced this back to a heat issue. It's an old machine after all. After installing smcFanControl, this problem has gone away. I don't normally burn timelines of nothing but AVCHD, but I'm certain there was a time in the past I was able to burn these without issue. I monitor my system temperature during rendering and I'm somewhat confident that's not what's crashing the system.
The top part of my latest crash report is listed below. Can anyone help me figure out what's going on?

After a not-too-intense Bing search, the particular panic you're getting seems to be an indication of:
    Your Mac Pro is dying.
Bad drivers in combo with an unforgiving OS.
I don't have any easy advice for number 1.  If it is still a heat issue, you may need to redo the thermal paste on the CPU and blow the dust out of the heat sink.  If it's a deeper problem than that, some serious repair work up to and including replacement may be required.  Either way, it will be a painful fix.  For number 2, try updating your graphics card drivers (which card do you have?) and/or going back to 10.6.x or Lion 10.7.x and see if things improve.

EDIT: Although Encore and Premiere Pro have their share of bugs, a lot of times they expose weaknesses in a system because of how much they tax all of the hardware and software.

  • Encore CS5 transcode terrible quality

Hopefully someone can guide me to getting better quality from a CS5 DVD.
Source video is high def footage from Canon HFM41 camcorder.  I edit in Pinnacle Studio on a PC.  In the case of this project, the end video is 36 minutes in length.  I output to a 1080i MPEG2 file, even though for the time being I will only be making a standard DVD, someday I may want to take the same file and make a Blu-Ray disc.
In Encore CS5(Mac), I import the file as a timeline.  I add a main menu, 7 submenu pages for the 37 chapters, and a 2nd audio track.
Since it is only 36 minutes, I should be able to get max quality on a DVD.  For transcoding, I choose Automatic, and Max Render Quality.  But when I watch the final DVD, any scenes of action look terrible.  I've tried many different transcode settings such as DV High Quality 7MB 2 pass VBR, and I even tried copying this preset to a "DV High Quality 8MB 2 pass VBR".  No big improvement in quality.  Sometimes the transcoding took 8 hours on a 3 year old iMac i5.  Very frustrating, especially when I can burn a DVD right out of Pinnacle Studio, and the quality is outstanding.
Can anyone give me the settings I need in CS5 to get the max quality for a 36 minute DVD?
My next step would be to output 2 files from Studio, the 1080i MPEG2 AND a standard DVD MPEG2 file.  Then import the DVD file into Encore.  But shouldn't a professional level program such as Encore be able to do better encoding than a $99 consumer package such as Pinnacle Studio.
Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions.

Stan, I did a little testing last night as follows.
I took a one minute segment of some beach volleyball that was showing poor quality on my initial DVD from Pinnacle Studio, and exported this 4 different ways
    1) MPEG2 DVD Quality
    2) MPEG2 1080i (same as my original 37 minute problem video)
    3) AVCHD HD 1080
    4) MP4 1080
I imported these one at a time into Encore, encoded as DV HQ 8MB CBR (except the DVD Quality file which did not need transcoding).  I burned a DVD for each.  The results all looked pretty good and pretty much the same between all 4 discs.  The MPEG2 1080i disc didn't show the same poor quality that my iniitial 37 minute video did, even though they were exported from Pinnacle with the same settings.  So then overnight, I tried re-transcoding the original 37 minute MPEG2 1080i file using the same DV HQ 8MB CBR from Encore and burning the disc.  This morning before leaving for work, I popped the DVD in and went to the volleyball clip, and it looked terrible during the fast action, same as before.
So I am a bit perplexed by this.  The only thing I can think is that because the 37 minute project has much more data in the project, and the MPEG2 1080i video file is about 7.2GB, maybe Encore is not allowing the same data rate. even though I told it to use the same transcode setting than the test using the 1 minute clip.
Not sure where to go from here, but I have exhausted so many 9-hour long transcode settings, and my project is way overdue.  I would really like to know what settings to use from Pinnacle as well as Encore so that I can save off the highest quality file from Pinnacle that will allow me the highest quality in Encore so that in the future if I ever want to go back and  re-export the project as Blu-Ray or something else, that I have the files I need.  I guess I will just make the DVD with the MPEG2 DVD quality export file, and just save off the Pinnacle Studio export in all 4 formats shown above, not knowing which one will be needed in the future.
    Any other suggestions or ideas?

  • Encore CS3 - Hangs and import problems with menus and avi footage with audio tracks present.

I'm trying to import some footage files in .avi format into Encore CS3 and am having several problems.
In what follows when I say "crash" I mean Encore quits with a standard Windows error. When I say "hang" I mean Encore does not quit but rather becomes an unresponsive process that must be killed manually using Windows Task Manager.
    My System:
    WinXP Pro SP2
2.93 GHz Intel Celeron CPU - single core
    Intel PERL mobo
    3GB 400MHz RAM
    NVidia 7800GS video
I mention these specs however I am not experiencing any hardware
related bugs or issues (like out of memory or video driver crashes
etc) when using any CS3 app.
The footage files (as reported by GSpot) and problems I am seeing. In all cases GSpot reports that I have the appropriate codec installed:
    footage1.avi - Dx50 XVid 1.0.3, Dolby AC3 48kHz 192kb/s, 716834 KB
Attempting to import as timeline causes Encore CS3 to hang.
Importing as an Asset allows it to import but when I try to click
on it in the project windown to add it to a new empty timeline,
Encore hangs. It plays fine in Windows Media Player.
    footage2.avi - Dx50 XVid 1.0.3, MPEG-1 Layer 3 48kHz 128kb/s, 718302 KB
Imports fine as either a timeline or asset but no audio track comes
with it, even though there is an audio track in the footage. It plays
fine in Windows Media Player. Video imports perfectly, just no audio.
    footage3.avi - Dx50 XVid 1.0.3, MPEG1-Layer3 48kHz 112kb/s, 717606 KB
Imports fine as either a timeline or asset but no audio track comes
with it, even though there is an audio track in the footage. It plays
fine in Windows Media Player. Video imports perfectly, just no
audio. I tried converting this one using AVS to both MPEG3 and DivX,
each using MPEG1-Layer3 44kHz 192kb/s audio, and got the same issue
upon importing into Encore CS3. I also loaded it into Camtasia
Studio and it looked fine over there. The audio was present and I
was able to export it as a .WAV file. When I tried looking at the
file in Soundbooth CS3, there was no audio track or, more
accurately, the audio track was a flat line.
By way of comparison these are importing perfectly:
    footage4.avi - XVID XviD 1.1.0 Beta2, MPEG1-Layer3 48kHz 189kb/s Two mono
    channels LAME3.96r, 717436 KB.
    footage5.avi - XVID XviD 1.1.0 Final, Dolby AC3 48kHz 448kb/s Six
    channels (3/2 .1), 716418 KB.
    footage6.avi - XVID XviD 1.1.0 Final, Dolby AC3 48kHz 448kb/s Six
    channels (3/2 .1), 716418 KB.
    footage7.avi - XVID XviD 1.0.3, Dolby AC3 48kHz 448kb/s 6 channels
    (3/2 .1), 717502 KB
    footage8.avi - XVID XviD 1.0.3, Dolby AC3 48kHz 448kb/s 6 channels
    (3/2 .1), 717180 KB
    footage9.avi - XVID XviD 1.1.2 Final, Dolby AC3 48kHz 448kb/s 6 channels
    (3/2 .1), 2291904 KB
Although this one imported & transcoded correctly, when I went to
build it to a DVD image file I got some strange errors during the
"planning video" stage that prevented the process from completing.
Unfortunately I neglected to write down the error message I recieved
which read like quite nonsensical babble to me, and I have since
deleted the project folder. I remember it was not a memory or
display related error and it included a timestamp where the error
was happening. I played the footage in the preview panel thru the
identified timestamp but it previewed perfectly without even a
jitter in either the video or audio. Took forever to transcode so I
doubt I'll be doing this one again anytime soon.
Another issue I am having is with the motion menus. I burned a DVD and it does not load correctly in one of my DVD players (a Sony rdr-gx330 recorder/player). It appears to take extra time to recognize the disk, the startup (first-play) menu does not show automatically, and I must press the Main Menu button on the

Another issue I am having is with the motion menus. I burned a DVD and it does not load correctly in one of my DVD players (a Sony rdr-gx330 recorder/player). It appears to take extra time to recognize the disk, the startup (first-play) menu does not show automatically, and I must press the Main Menu button on the remote control to make it appear. Other than that it seems to play ok in that player. Also tested it in 2 other DVD players (a Panasonic and Zenith) and it worked just fine like it's supposed to in them. Also plays perfectly in my computer's DVD player/burner using Windows Media Player v10. I tried burning to Memorex +RW single-layer single-sided disks at 6, 7, & 8Mbps project settings but got the exact same result every time.
Encore CS3 crashes fairly often during authoring, particularly during imports, and when I go to edit things like calling up a timeline in the timeline panel, dragging footage into an existing timeline, or changing button links in a menu etc.. I have also experienced seemingly random hangs even more often, probably 5 or 6 times as often as a crash. Saving the project after every little change I make, then closing and restarting Encore allows me to make progress albeit at a significantly reduced workflow rate. Accessing Photoshop from Encore appears to be working flawlessly so far aside from the slow load times. Encore hangs sometimes during video transcoding, repeat the process and it works ok. If I try to import a menu from the library after importing my footage files, Encore hangs trying to import it either at the 50% mark or the 99% mark (it varies even with the same exact menu selected from the library). If I import the menu first and the footage after, then no problems. Also trying to render motion menus after importing footage causes Encore to hang, render before footage import and everything works ok. Interestingly enough, previewing my project in Encore's monitor or preview panels works perfectly even in High quality mode -- in fact it operates quite smoothly in comparison to other apps I have tried. Although those footage files that had missing audio tracks on import obviously played silently, I have yet to experience a hang or crash during a preview or when scrubbing through a timeline in the monitor panel.
The last problem I've seen is with the project cache files. It doesn't always get rid of cache files when stuff is deleted from the project. I was working on one project and surprisingly ran out of disk space. When I tracked it down I found that there were some two dozen copies of a footage file I had repeatedly imported and deleted from the project still sitting in the cache folder. The file was an avi about 2GB so it was taking up some 40 GB of disk space for stuff that was no longer in the project. I tried shutting down Encore and manually deleting all the cache files, and that worked for most of them, but there was one 2GB file that kept reappearing in the cache folder even though it was no longer in the project. The XML file in the cache folder still had references to it in there so I can only assume that was the reason it kept showing up. I eventually had to delete and totally recreate the project from scratch to regain my lost disk space. This included having to sit thru a 6 hour long transcoding session which pissed me off to no end.
Encore CS3 appears on the surface to be a very powerful, feature rich, and approachable app with a simple easy to use interface, but it is awfully bugged in just about every area I have explored and still needs lots and lots of work for it to be really useful. Frankly for me it is pretty damn annoying that I have invested so much money in this suite only to find several of the apps in it (Encore & Premiere in particular) behaving this poorly. In my opinion every single app in the suite exhibits lousy performance whenever you must do anything at all involving the disk from the time you click to start it up until the time you click to close it down. Several of them are just as seriously bugged as Encore too, and being a long time Photoshop v5.5 user I expected much more from Adobe. Even Photoshop is two or three times as slow now (e.g. it takes about 20-30 seconds to simply create an empty 500x500 pixel image file and almost a full minute to load a 30x60 pixel single-layer gif). So far I have attempted to create 6 DVDs using Encore and after 3 weeks of effort have only succeeded in getting one of them onto a final disk -- and that one is kinda limping to work correctly in my DVD player. Three of those projects became so corrupted while working on them that I had to delete them completely and recreate them from scratch, only to find that I still couldn't get them to completion for one reason or another. Seriously disappointing.
