Encore DVD...is XP really necessary?

I'm using W2K and have happily, and wilfully, avoided XP. But Adobe claims XP to be required for Encore.
Any idea on what might not work under W2K? Sure, I can get the OEM version for about GBP100, but I'd rather not give pirate Bill anything if I don't have to.
Anyone know who/where in Adobe I can contact for clarification?
Cheers

"And XP supports hyperthreading for the newer Intel CPUs, which W2K doesn't. "
Yes it does - ever since SP2 (or so I recall). I've got a dual Xeon Presonia system (Dell Precision 530) and with 1 Xeon & HT enabled W2K Pro sees 2 (virtual) processors & well threaded apps (i.e. from Adobe) make use of this very well. HOWEVER adding the second processor causes isssues with W2K pro because W2K Pro only licenses dual CPU systems & doesn't differential HT instances of processing from physical processors (Unlike Xp). When I dual boot to W2K Server it sees 4 processors & again Adobe apps scale well to make use of the leftovers offered by HT functionality (man it screams on Photoshop filters).
So W2K Pro does support HT but only in single CPU systems where HT is enabled. For dual systems one ahs to upgrade to W2K Server or AS or of course Xp Pro (where cpu's are counted physically rather than as HT instances of processors). FWIW - I may not be using Intel's or MS's specific terminology but my own in hopes of explaining.
Having said all that - has anyone tried dual booting between Xp and W2K? I prefer W2K (driver support) but might consider Xp Pro to run Encore DVD etc and test the waters. If Xp can be installed over W2K non invasively allow the use of either (obviously needing to reinstall drivers & apps for Xp) do they co-exist well? Wonder who's tried if anyone?
Thanks,
B

  • Restore my iPod touch can make me lose everything I have and is it really necessary? // Restaurer mon IPod touch peut-il me faire perdre tout ce que j'ai et est-ce vraiment nécessaire??

    Hi everyone!
    I have problems with my 4th generation IPod Touch for a while.
    First, it was no longer recognized by Windows or by ITunes and yet il worked fine forabout 2 week.... it is beyond comprehension!!   Ican no longer use ITunes... not pratical!!   I'm actively looking for solutions.
    I finally solved the problem of recognition with Windows, with the help of Apple.  Now, I still have the problem of recognition with which ITunes still does not work.  When I open ITunes, a warning message telling me to restore my IPod.
    My fear is losing my music but also some conversations, my bookmarks, my pictures and  my apps and data entered in them.  I would lose nothing, find my IPod as it's now after the restoration.
    Is it possible to not lose its data during a restore??  If so, how??  Is ICloud does the work??
    Is it really necessary to restore my IPod??  Do you think this would solve my problem really??
    Could you please help me???
    Thank you in advance for your answers!

    Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."

  • Encore DVD Writing Cancels won't play on DVD player issue

    So I have a very confusing issue with encore.
    When I press build everything works fine. Then writing begins. The moment the writing reaches the end of the progress bar (the exact moment)  the progress bar goes to empty and the bottom bar says canceling and ejects the DVD. Usually (not every time) a pop up menu saying "end of file" appears next. When I press ok for end of file message the pop up disappears and suddenly the DVD progress bar is filled and the DVD says completed (as if nothing just happened). So I'm confused whether it worked or not!
    I reinsert the DVD that just ejected into my Mac and it works! Then I put it into a DVD player and it won't play, it won't play on my old Xbox 360 either, but it WILL play in a Bluray player?!
    Everytime I rewrite the files I get different results. They all work on my Mac and blu ray but only 1 of 4 works in the Xbox. The one that does work in the Xbox will read in the DVD player but plays choppy and  skips  around as if the DVD is scratched or damaged?
    ! Other differences involve the write speed, sometimes the options are 8x or 4x. Other times its 3x,2x, and 1x. When the latter write speed options occur I cannot press "test before writing" it's greyed out. When 8x and 4x are the speed options I can check it.  I used different DVDs and it didn't help.
    I work for a company that needs to copy the DVDs but they can't be copied. Don't know why?
    Here are my settings
    Mpeg 2-DVD exported from Pr.

    Check build is good.
    I really need help with this weird issue quickly thanks.

    Just an Update, I've tried many things to no avail still have a few others to try. Being a Large file it takes a while to try things.
    I went ahead and got Toast, but considering that the Image Iso and the DVD Folder both gave me the End of File Error and the Disc "Failed Completed" Error I figured it a no go and it was. It did however give me something that Opened everywhere (Mac,Xbox,Dvd) , but it did not play on the Dvd correctly.
    I've done numerous things in the Mac permissions end Like trying as a different user and running as the Root User, but it was also unsuccessful.
    I've Re- Exported the file many different ways, but finally had a breakthrough using a version of M2v.  It's definitely an error with Finalizing. My disc previously began to mess up and give "END of File" after it finished writing, it never even made it to the "Writing Lead Out" stage. I beleive this is why it plays it certain places fine, but probably not as well in systems (like Dvd players) that require those last few steps like writing Lead Out.
    The only issue I have now is that when I put it into the DVD player it say "No title"!?!? AY CARAMBA!!!
    Now I'm working on trying to figure this NEW problem! I have all my menus and links in place, but no go. I think it may be related to the previous problem in that something beneath the surface is wrong with my computer. Being a used Mac with a restored Hard Drive there are probably endless possibilities, but I hesitate to think that way because it may also have absolutely nothing to do with it.
    So any help is greatly appreciated
    whether it be a specific issue you know of dealing with used Macs and issue similar to mine
    or just on the "NO Title" error as a separate issue. I'm hoping this "No Title" is something simple and unrelated,  I've already burned through about 13 discs and even more pain pills for the headaches!!

  • Is 'Leopard' really necessary?

    Hi again..
    I've been reading different threads on this topic (some of which were negative on various Leopard features) and was just wondering whether it was really necessary to install Leopard?
    We only recently bought our Mac and I was just concerned that I might end up with unnecessary problems....
    What are the benefits of (or purpose in) installing this software/upgrade?
    Any information on this would be appreciated, thanks!

    After one week using Leopard, I was ready to say it was far more trouble than it was worth. Against my better judgement, I decided to do the default "Upgrade" install, but not before I made a clone of my Tiger startup disk, & it would have been a nightmare without that. The install seemed to go fine but my iMac would not restart completely -- no menu bar, no Finder, & a stuck Dock. I tried a lot of things but ultimately had to erase the drive from Disk Utility on the Leopard DVD -- Erase & Install would not even work from within the installer, repeatedly giving me a message about not being able to unmount the target volume. But after around 12 hours total effort, I successfully installed it 'from scratch' on the newly reformatted drive & used Setup Assistant to migrate everything from the clone.
    I have no idea why I had these problems: I had used Tiger's latest version of Disk Utility prior to the first attempt to verify that the Tiger install had correct permissions & that the file system was OK. I had no third party hacks installed (& I'm obsessed enough about the evils of such things to know how to find them, even when stuck into the nooks & crannies of the OS). "Clean" is an overused term, but my Tiger OS was as pristine as I know how to make it, drawing on almost two years of active participation in these forums & everything all its gurus taught me.
    Anyway, even after getting it installed successfully, & doing everything suggested here & elsewhere to make sure it was in good health, I had a variety of small & not-quite-so small problems. The 10.5.1 update helped some, as did Apple's k-base articles about repairing oddities introduced by upgrading from Tiger & such, but it still was disappointingly unstable compared to 10.4.10. Worse, I learned that several of my mainstay apps weren't Leopard-compatible.
    But I stayed with it, partially because I could always reboot into Tiger with my clone when I needed to, partially because I'm just stubborn enough not to want to admit defeat, but mostly because the new feature set really does have a lot to offer that Tiger does not. The biggies like Time Machine are great but I find all the little refinements are really what I like most. For example, I didn't think something as simple as being able to display the path in the bottom of all Finder windows (like in Spotlight searches) would be such a boon, but it is. Spotlight is still far from perfect but Boolean searches make it much more powerful.
    Long story short(er), I find that when I need to boot back into Tiger, I really miss all the little things it won't do that Leopard will. There are still some rough edges & things that need to be rethought, & it still isn't as stable as I would like but overall, as the two months of use mark approaches, I do not regret buying it & making it my mainstay OS version.
    Necessary? No. Worth it? It is for me.

  • Help needed on Encore DVD 2.0 Transcoding Process!

    Hi Guys,
    I'm really first running Encore DVD 2.0 on WinXP SP2. My Computer is P4 3.0 GHz with 2 GB of Ram.
    I have used Premiere elements converted the media file to 20GB .avi file ( 1.40 Hr duration) and exported to Encore DVD 2.0. In Encore, I have created menus, added subtitles and eveythingelse which needed for building disc. I've selected 1 Pass VBR which I believed it would make transcoding faster.
    It is now in the transcoding progress ( Building disc), I have a feeling that I might did something wrong since the transcoding progress has been taking more than 8 hours. In the transcoding box, please see
    http://www.maicans.com/images/Image.JPG
    The upper bar has moved to and stayed like that since the beginning, only the lower bar is still moving.
    Does anyone has any idea why it takes so much time for transcoding. Have I done anything wrong?
    Thanks,
    Bank Vichayotin

    Never-Ending transcoding/importing? Here's the fix.

  • WTB: Encore DVD 2.0

    Hello. I currently own both Premiere Pro 1.0 and Encore DVD 1.0. After trying out both PP 2.0, PP CS4, Encore 2.0, and Encore CS4, I have decided that the 2.0 versions of both programs are right for me. CS4 is just way more than I need.
    So, I was wondering if anyone is willing to sell their 2.0 versions. At a minimum, I would like to have Encore DVD 2.0. I only use PP for capture and minor editing and I can live with version 1.0.
    I am only interested in legit retail versions. Nothing OEM.
    Thanks.

    James,
    I'm with you on the choice of versions. I will keep my EncoreDVD2, until I absolutely know that I have good reason to move up to CS4, or CS5. However, I could not sell my copy, even if I wanted to, as it is in my upgrade path.
    A word of caution: several folk on other fora have been burned lately with used copies of EncoreDVD2. Most have already been registered and then Activated to the max # of Activations, so the buyers are stuck trying to get the $ back from the sellers. Make sure that you get all of the proper Adobe transfer documents
    b BEFORE
    you pay for any copy. "Show me the paper!" Adobe is really good about helping people transfer legit ownership of their programs. They will reset the Activation aspect, when the program is legit. All transactions can be done via FAX and it takes only a day, or two. Get the paperwork first, or you will have problems.
    And yes, EncoreDVD2 has been rock-solid for me. I love that program.
    Good luck,

  • 4:3 and 16:9 mix onto one Adobe Encore DVD

    Using Adobe Encore DVD, I have made a 4:3 and 16:9 mix of movie timelines and menus on one DVD.
    Encore previews the mix of 4:3 and 16:9 movies/menus in the one project correctly.
    The dvd disc I made plays 4:3 and letterbox 16:9 on my 4:3 TV correctly.
    The dvd disc I made plays 4:3 and 16:9 in InterVideo DVD on my computer OK.
    Why when I take the disc to the shop to view on a widescreen monitor does it not show each aspect ratio correctly. I hope it is just a setting there but we tried many settings on the DVD player and on the monitor. When 4:3 played correctly, 16:9 did not and vica versa.
    Is it me or the shop?
    This page was helpful http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/329473.html
    Thanks, freddo

    We were just stuggling with this for some time, and eventually discovered that we were not properly using Encore.
    We had two videos:  one as 4:3, the other as 16:9.
    We created a menu, brought the videos into the timeline, linked everything properly, but would not get the expected results.
    We eventually learned that we were supposed to create TWO timelines; one for the 4:3, and one for the 16:9.
    Hope this can save someone some time.

  • Print out of Encore DVD Flowchart

    I'm asking out of pure curiosity's sake.
    Is it possible to get a print out of an Encore DVD flowchart? Obviously one could be made in either Illustrator or Photoshop, but it could be helpful to get a print out of a ready made flowchart.

    Without going the raster-image routes, mentioned above, I know of no direct print function. I will usually do my flowcharts in AI, as I can have so much more control that way, and can even plug in graphics of the Menus, so that the client can see things cleanly, and can sign off on the Project.
    I know that is not as easy as just pushing a button, and generating an 11 x 17 high-rez PDF, which would be great, but I do not know of any other ways.
    Good luck,

  • Is 2 GB Ram really necessary?

    Looking to upgrade my gf's Macbook.
    1 GB = $99
    2 GB = $225
    Given OSX's good memory management quality, and the fact that she will mainly do web design and LogicPro 7 work on the Macbook, is the 2 GB really necessary or will it be more like overkill?
    We had 2 GB in our old powerbooks and it seemed to make little real-world everyday difference between 1 GB of Ram.
    Thanks for any comments...

    I'm running 2G of Ram with Logic Pro 7. It's well worth the money if you can afford it. And it also depends on what you're going to within Logic Pro 7. But so far, I've noticed a HUGE difference...things are running a lot smoother than before the memory upgrade.
    Having said that, 1G should be sufficient. Of course, Logic Pro 7 is running Universal. So you're going to get your money worth. And plus, your gf is going to love you for the 2G upgrade.
    Web-design takes less "stress" than using Logic. But then again, if she's a professional web-designer and going to use Photoshop with it...keep in mind that it's not Universal yet. But when the update is ready, I'm sure it will fly with 2G of Ram.
    Not all 3rd party plug-ins for Logic Pro 7 are universal yet...so performance is going to suffer a little when running those plug-ins.
    Live 5.2 is UB and Reason 3.0.5 is also UB. If you really want to surprise your gf, get these 2 music production softwares, she will love using them with Logic Pro 7. I know, I'm a little off topic, just some suggestions. Any day is Valentine day.

  • Is the rating system really necessary?

    I know... I know... I'm probably getting on a touchy subject here.
    I understand the desire for a sort of incentive for people to answer questions but it is my observation that use of points is hardly consistent. For the most part, it seems like questions from established users tend to get helpful and solved answers most of the time. Great. The point system works in that instance.
    I have also noticed that I will see someone come on the boards, post a question, get their answer and never post again. They either don't know about the rating system or they do not stay long enough to use it.
    Does that mean I need to look at the O.P.'s post count before I post an answer? I think that's shallow. If someone has question and I think I know a solution, then I will post a solution.
    But what is the solution? Do away with the rating system? I think some upper-level members would have a justifiable objection to that. Change it to a raw post count? I suspect we would see an even higher number of posts deleted because of people trying to pad their numbers.
    What if members received 1 point for marking an answer as helpful and 2 points for marking an answer as solved?
    Its a thought.

    No, the rating (reputation) system isn't really necessary, but it does serve as an incentive for many people to increase their participation, and increased participation lends itself to the perception of increased value in this Apple-provided service, if not to the usefulness of the bulk of the posts that are left here.
    Ultimately, there are a lot of things that go into the decision to attach a reputation system of one kind or another to Discussions, and there has been one such system or another in place here for many years, so there is no reason to believe that the concept will ever be abandoned.
    As to the idea that upper-level members would object to its loss, yes, some would. Maybe many. On the other hand, there are quite a few of us who see through this charade and do what we can do undermine its importance relative to the real mission of Apple's Discussions. In the end, I'd like to think that our cynicism helps to balance out the "shallowness" of post-count building and points-grubbing strategies that seem to obsess many of our peers.
    What if members received 1 point for marking an answer as helpful and 2 points for marking an answer as solved?
    I've suggested this myself in the past, but one of the roadblocks to its implementation is that the current software is only able to mete out points in increments of 5. Oh well....
    Good luck!

  • [Solved] Is HAL really necessary?

    Hey ,
    I used Arch a while ago, but started distrohopping again, since I didn't want to put so much effort in configuring my system. But now I feel ready to give it another shot
    For a few days now, I've been reading the Wiki; and now I'm not quite sure if HAL is still really necessary.  I mean, udev can do pretty much the same things, right?
    And I'm only using my laptop for surfing, office-stuff & as a mediplayer (my music is stored on a ntfs-formated usb-hdd.)
    I'm still really new to the whole Linux-thing, so maybe I'm completely wrong; please correct me if I am

    On the xorg wiki page it says
    "If you are using Xorg 1.8 you do not need to add HAL to DAEMONS array or start hal"
    so if you use xorg 1.8 you don't need hal ( which I think is still not in the official repo , but you can get it from AUR )
    I hope that helps

  • FK's indexes : really necessary ?

    Hi all,
    I have a database with an index for each Foreign Key. This leads me to wonder whether theses indexes are really necessary ?
    I read elsewhere that a query like this one would help me to see which indexes are really worth it (the bigger the ratio, the best the index) :
    select distinct_keys/num_rows as ratio, distinct_keys, num_rows, index_name
    from user_indexes
    where num_rows != 0
    order by ratio;Can anyone confirm this is a good clue, or give me some more advice
    Thanks for your comments

    I found information on this topic here : %20and%20{key}]http://asktom.oracle.com/pls/ask/f?p=4950:8:71095::NO::F4950_P8_DISPLAYID,F4950_P8_CRITERIA:292016138754,{foreign}%20and%20{key}
    It says that indexes on FK are necessary to prevent table-level locks.
    Now my question is : what if statistics are not set for theses indexes ? Will Oracle ignore them and lock the tables ?

  • Is Iterator class really necessary for our lifes?

    I'm reading about Iterator class and how to use it, but a doubt arrise. Is it really necessary?
    Take a look at my code bellow:
    import java.util.*;
    public class Main {
        public static void main(String[] args) {
            ArrayList ar = new ArrayList();
            for (int i=0;i<20;i++)
                ar.add(i);
            //Method 1
             for(int i=0;i<ar.size();i++)
                if (((Integer)ar.get(i) % 2) != 0)
                    ar.remove(i);
            //Method 2
            Iterator it = ar.iterator();
            while(it.hasNext())
                if (((Integer)it.next() % 2) != 0)
                    it.remove();
            System.out.println("The even numbers are: ");
            for(int i=0;i<ar.size();i++)
                System.out.println((Integer)ar.get(i));
    }In the code above, we have two ways to do the same thing, both works fine, but using the Method 2 I needed to code one line more instancing a new class Iterator.
    Can anyone tell me in which circuntances I really need to use a Iterator and why?
    Thanks

    Additionally, Iterator works on all Collections. For Sets, there is no get(i). If you have a method that returns a Collection, and that Collection might be a LinkedList or an ArrayList or a HashSet or something else, the Iterator is the gauranteed way to walk through it, regardless of what class it is. And with enhanced for loop, it's quite clean and simple.
    Collection<Thing> things = thingFetcher.fetchACollectionOfThings(); // LinkedList? HashSet? We don't know and don't care
    for (Thing thing : things) {
      thing.doStuff();
    }

  • Is periodic maintenance really necessary?

    Is it really necessary, and does it really accomplish anything?   And if so, why isn't it mentioned in the user-pamphlet that came with the machine?
    I've read several threads about running "sudo periodic daily weekly monthly", and whether or not it will get run automatically if the machine is asleep or powered off at the scheduled time, and how to run it manually or download tools to automate the process.
    But I've also seen some things saying it doesn't really accomplish much.
    It seems like if it was really necessary that apple should advertise it better and make it more straight forward for novice users to do it.

    Not true. If the Mac is asleep at the appointed hour of the maintenance scripts execution (3:15 am) the scripts will run soon after the Mac is awakened. But if the Mac is turned off at night, the scripts do not run when the Mac is booted. The countdown clock is reset to 0 and if the Mac is consistently shut down before 3:15 am, then the scripts will never run.
    It has already been established in another thread that the OP shuts down his Mac every evening and his Mac's scripts have not been run for some time.
