Encore's (cs5) 'end action'- more like 'no action'

anyone know of issues with CS5 Encore's end action not working. I've linked my end action from chapter one to chapter two, etc and/or end actioned my time lines in many trial and always errors ways. I can't seem to get passed the second chapter before it links to Main menu page.
Also, getting a runtime error when trying to open Encore...??
StuckinFlorida

End actions work fine for me in CS5.
I am not using the link one chapter to another workflow, however.
This method is often paired with overrides; do you have any set?

  • Error message encore cs5 end action can't execute on the final chapter point

Dvd plays great. Exported it as a mpeg 2-dvd,  video only. Audio separate as a .wav. imported video as a timeline, audio as an asset. Video is not transcoded.
But I have a sub menu, with 6 chapter markers. I check the project and I get this: "error message encore cs5 end action can't execute on the final chapter point"
Do I need to make a chapter playlist? Because that gave me a "orphaned playlist" error message.
I selected the last chapter masker and had the end action go to the sub menu.
    Thanks!

Saw a previous thread where bill hunt said it ignore it and try to burn a copy.

  • VERY New to Encore....End Action Not Set?

I just upgraded (today) to Premiere CS5.  I've been able to get to the point of burning my project and "Check Project" found an error.  It was "End Action not set" for my sequence.  I'm not 100% what this means (and a search turned up 370 items, leaving me overwhelmed).
Is it asking what I want to happen after the last chapter in the sequence does (like return to the Menu default) or is it asking me what will follow after playing chapter one in my sequence?  I really doubt it is the last option but seeing as it is showing a still form a scene from chapter one I want to be sure that I link the correct thing from the get go.
    Don't bash me, I know I'm stupid!

In the Check Project Message box, Dbl-click on that error/warning message, so that you can see exactly where it found the issue.
In this case, there is an Asset, probably a Timeline, with no End Action set. This End Action tells the DVD player what to do next, like Return to Last Menu. Note: you can have an End Action on several different Assets, like Playlists and Chapter Playlists. Also note: if one has a Playlist with an End Action, and in that Playlist are Timelines with their own End Actions, the End Action of the Playlist takes precedence, and Check Project will issue a warning message (looks like an error message, but is just informing you of this precedence) to that effect. So long as that is what you want, just ignore that notification.
End Actions tell the DVD player what to do next. As mentioned above, it could be to Return to Last Menu, it could be to Go to another Menu, and you can even, with Specify Link and the drop-down, tell it to go to a Menu with a particular Button highlighted. It could also be used to make a Timeline Loop, where you would set its End Action back to the beginning of that Timeline. You could also set one Timeline's End Action to go to another Timeline. Lots of possibilities.
Remember that I told you Encore was more involved, than PrE's semi-auto authoring. Do not be overwhelmed, but just take it slowly. Soon, when you get the "lay of the land" down, you will greatly appreciate the new power and control that you have. Being overwhelmed will be replaced by great joy, and you will feel like a god.
I would like to make one recommendation, and you WILL thank me later: Jeff Bellune wrote a great book, The Focal Easy Guide to Adobe EncoreDVD 2.0, Focal Press, ISBN 0-240-52004-1. Do not be put off by the title and the version, EncoreDVD 2.0 (I know you have CS5). Everything in that book applies 100% to Encore CS5. Now, CS5 has added some "stuff," that will NOT be in the book, but this forum and the Help files will step you though those. Jeff's book will take you through all of the aspects of Encore and navigating the DVD-specs. He'll also teach you how to create illusions, that seem to override the DVD-specs. Of course we cannot do that, but the user will think that we have. This book will soon become your go-to for almost everything in Encore.
    Good luck,

  • Encore CS3 First Play and End Action problems

I have one menu, one timeline. I'm trying to have the DVD start with the menu for about 2 minutes, the length of the audio asset linked to, then start the first chapter of the timeline. No overrides used in the project.
First Play of the disc: set to the default menu.
End action of the menu: set to first chapter of timeline.
Menu-motion: Audio linked to an audio asset, duration about 2 minutes.
In Encore DVD 2.0 this was trivial and worked. Not in CS3!
Most of the time it loops the menu indefinitely. Sometimes it will loop twice, then start the chapter.
Preview from the menu works. Preview from the disc doesn't, nor the final DVD burn. I've seen this was discussed here before, I just can't find the topic.
    Any fixes?
    Thanks

    Johnathan,
Tell us more about your Assets on this Play First Timeline. What are the files, format, Duration, etc.? Is this file muxed, or elemental streams? The greater the detail, the better.
I have not seen the behavior that you observe, hence my questions.

  • In Encore I get an error in the check project window of "can't execute end action because of final chapter marker"

I have imported a project to Encore and while it worked the first time, this time I get an error in the check project winder of can't execute chapter 2 end action because of final end marker?  I have two different sections that have buttons on the menu.  When you get to the end of the first sequence I need it to go back to the menu and it is saying that it can't because of the end action on the final marker.

The 'unable to locate' message means that you don't have those music files on that computer, or that they are not where iTunes is expecting them to be. How did you get the entries for those tracks in your new computer's iTunes ?
If you still have your old computer then you can try copying them over again : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
You may also be able to re-download them from the store (checking for available downloads only checks for items that have not yet been downloaded, not for past purchases) via the Purchased link under Quick Links on the right-hand side of the iTunes store home page (re-downloading music isn't possible in all countries). You may need to delete them form your library first (where you are getting the 'unable to locate' message), otherwise iTunes will assume that you still have them somewhere and won't let you re-download them.

  • Exporting to Encore - build errors - ? "end action" and "Title remote"

    Hello,
When I choose to export to encore, I and when it is time to build the DVD, it tells me I have 2 errors:
    - End action not set
    - Title remote not set
Why are these errors appearing, does anyone know ?
What I am doing, is exporting a portion of my timeline to encore, when the DVD is ready to be burnt, the DVD tray opens, I then cancel the process because I don't wish to burn to DVD, and then from there, I press "build" which will build the .vobs directly to the hard drive. It is then, after pressing "build" that I get the 2 errors above.
    Any help is much appreciated.
    Dave.

You can also learn about them by reading the Encore manual or Help file.

  • Adobe Encore CS4: End action will not execute because of end action on the final chapter point

    Error screen:
Error I’m getting for section titled Notes (PP 45 second video): “End action will not execute because of end action on the final chapter point.”
The icon that shows error is in top line second from end.  I’m trying to 'end action' that portion of the video by going back to 'menu default'; also tried end action w/ ‘Stop’ and neither work.
I saw a post about checking timeline.  Not sure what I’m looking for there.  I have nothing in Orphanage area.  I also tried building despite Check Project error and it will not build project.  Any suggestions on how to fix: “End action will not execute because of end action on the final chapter point.”?

Select chapter one on that timelne. Look in the properties panel. Does it have an end action? You do not want an end action on the chapter; just on the timeline itself.
That will not generally prevent a build, however. So you may have other issues.

  • 'End Action' not working in Hardware player when chapter skipping. Suggestions?

Hey all. I am building a 2 disc BD set of my old band and have everything built using Encore CS5. The majority of functionality is working correctly however, I have a couple nagging issues that I can't seem to figure out. I am getting different results when simulating in Encore and testing on a hardware player (Panasonic BDT210, and PS3).
    - The first disc has 10 buttons on a single menu page. The second disc has 1 menu page with 3 sub pages (4 total). Each button plays a different clip. At the end of media (End Action), it is supposed to return to the main menu with the button highlighted. Here's the kicker: When simulating in Encore, each clip plays through and returns to the main menu correctly, whether playing through, or chapter skipping through to the end. However, when playing back on a hardware player, all clips return correctly when playing through. But 3 out of the 10 clips on disc 1, and 2 out of the 7 clips on disc 2 will NOT return when trying to chapter skip out. I keep getting a player error stating "this option is not allowed" and you have to watch the remainder of the clip to the end, or Top Menu out. In each of the 5 clips, all chapters work but you can't skip out.
It doesn't seem to be a problem with the amount of chapters because some only have one, and some have up to 8. I double checked the "End Action" settings for every clip and they are set correctly. Plus everything works in Encore but not on disc. Why is there a problem with some clips and not others? They are all encoded the same.
Any help for this would be great. I work in the industry and it's frustrating when you can't figure out something simple like this. Thanks.

Could you post a screen shot of the flowchart window showing all the links and navigation?

  • Encore...things I'd like to see tweaked

Why do we like Encore? Primarily:
    Does Bu-ray
It’s an Adobe product (which we trust and usually intuitively understand)
It works well with other Adobe products
It’s menus are cleaner and far easier to alter & customize than DVDsp.
    But..
It disobeys several of the Adobe expected/intuitive operating principles found in other Adobe software:
doesn’t properly sort assets alphabetically ---and the way it sorts assets in the Project window is different from the Menu window
doesn’t automatically sort menu assets..you have to refresh the sort by clicking, for example, the name column twice
doesn’t allow to you to alter the name of an item by clicking, double-clicking or striking the return key while it’s selected  in a list — it must be altered in the Properties palette onl —which isn’t intuitive or flexible
doesn’t allow you to create a menu by right clicking on an asset and choosing "new menu"--- which it should then create using that asset
I could be wrong but asking it to replace or locate an asset doesn’t usually work for me if it’s missing the asset..you have to “revert to original” before replacing or locating it...not intuitive
duplicating a menu asset creates a new menu which it throws in a different part and illogical part of the list
closing timlines leaves behind multiple empty timeline tabs rather than closing the tab itself in favour of another “full” tab; Command-W does not close them—rather you have to click the tiny “x” to close each one.Annoying.
it’s progress bars aren’t indicative of what is going on...for example: it may be copying media from one folder to a new one while saving a copy of of project but to you it looks like it has hung up
it doesn’t process/transcode items in a logical order ..making it harder to determine when the transcoding will be done
it’s not intuitive to “revert to original” a clip before re-transcoding it..you should be able to transcode it again if you wish at any time
When custo, izing a transcode setting and saving it...it should make that new setting the selected one of choice when you exit the window...you can easily assume, incorrectly, it has done so for you.
it’s not intuitive to forbid you to transcode something before using it as an asset —you should be able to at least override that after a warning or by un-checking a preference selection
it doesn’t automatically re-adjust a duration of a menu item if you replace it’s assets with one of a different duration (or at least warn you that the duration has changed) -- the only way to have the menu item readjust its duration is to pick-whip a totally different item and then pick-whip the correct one...take loads of extra time and could create a lot of mistakes
it should allow you to group items into folders & subfolders in the menus palette
doesn’t permit you to have motion menus larger than 1 gig...we use DVDs for show reels which allow us to use quicktime movies to act as a kind of fully-customizable Powerpoint or Keynote format (clicking enter advances to the next menu/movie --works pretty well!) and the 1-Gig-max rule is a huge drawback
doesn’t offer an infinite hold at the end of a menu or timeline item
And the error you receive when you open a project and it tells you it’s can’t open it because it has  been created in a Windows program WHEN IT WASN’T is rather unforgiveable. That should have been corrected long ago and it keeps happening for no logical reason or without any apparent avoidable process
Disclaimer: if I'm wrong about anything & everything here..I'm thrilled to find out why and how to fix it.
All the above said..Adobe is my favourite company in the world.. they created "the standard" for good program design which is why I get frustrated when I see weird things in one app that don't exist at all in any of their others

Quite a list. Where to begin? I'll take a crack at it from the beginning...

The Project panel contains all the assets in the project: menus, timelines, slideshows, playlists, video/audio/still assets, etc.. You can sort by Name (alphabetically) and also by other properties of the assets such as Type, Duration, DVD Transcode Status, etc. by clicking the column headers to sort by the selected property. The Menus panel contains only menus, but you can also sort by Name, End Action, Aspect Ratio, etc.
Default behavior in the Project panel is to sort new objects in alphabetical order- if Name is the chosen sort method.

Not the only way. You can also right-click an asset and choose Rename, or choose Edit > Rename. But as you noted, Encore doesn't have inline editing for asset names.
    adobefishman wrote:

That might be a nice enhancement request, but there are limitations: a motion menu can have only a single video and audio track. What happens if multiples of each is selected and you choose "New Menu"? The current method (opt-drag video into the menu, or drag audio in the menu) replaces any previously selected assets. Encore also has default menus and buttons in the Library, which are user-settable that are used when you choose "New Menu" or "New Button". Would those be ignored when you choose "New Menu/Button" with an asset selected?
There are solutions to all of those problem, but they don't add much value to the user once the user understands how to create motion menus in Encore. And the current implementation hasn't prevented very many from creating motion menus.
Personally, I don't see a tremendous amount of value in adding this functionality, but I'm just a fellow user.
    adobefishman wrote:

You must mean in the Flowchart, right? There are two parts to the flowchart - the hierarchy of the disc (from First Play, to menus to buttons linked to timelines, etc.) and the orphanage, where unlinked assets go. If you duplicate a linked menu, where would you expect it to go? Since it's a new menu that's not linked to the disc hierarchy, it should go in the orphanage, yes? And then it can be linked.
    adobefishman wrote:

Cmd-W works for me, as long as the timeline in the Timeline editor has focus. But it only closes the timeline, not the panel. There's a reason for this, though - if your settings are right, a single panel can hold multiple timelines, just as a single Menu editor panel can hold multiple menus. These are configurable in preferences. If you set your Timeline editor to a single panel containing multiple timelines, then Cmd-W closes the timelines without leaving the empty panel.

This blanket statement isn't universally true of all progress bars in Encore. Most times, progress bars are indicative of exactly what's going on.
    adobefishman wrote:

Have you looked at the Progress panel? You can see the order there. Personally, I don't do any transcoding at build time, so I don't care what order it's in but if you do, that's the place to check it. You can stop transcoding here as well.
I'm going to stop here for now, but I'll probably take up the rest later tonight or tomorrow.

  • How do you set the End Action on last slide of slideshow

    Encore DVD CS3.
I must be the village idiot. I have setup a slideshow with manual advance. I cannot find a way to set the end action for the last slide. When I click on the last slide in the slideshow timeline there is no option that I can find for end action. When I preview the slideshow the last slide goes to black. I set the manual advance for all slides. There is several mentions of end action but no info on how to do it.
    Appreciate advice. Very frustrating.
    Clif
BTW Why are there no reference books for Encore CS3? It seems very strange. It has been out for a while but NO books.

Thank you for your help. I did what you said but the last slide still goes to black. The last slide also ignores the "manual Advance" and goes to black.
I highlighted the slideshow timeline in the project window and set end action on the properties panel on the right to the slideshow itself. But the last slide quickly goes to black. Each slide except the last one has a box in the upper right corner indicating a cross dissolve transition. I set the slide duration to "manual advance" for the whole slideshow. I feel like an idiot but nothing seems to change the end action of the slideshow or the last slide. Always cuts to black and stops.

  • End action vs Override

Encore CS4:  I'm confused on the override function.  Page 146 of the manual says:
"... If the viewer wants to play the clips individually, you can make the player to return to the main menu after playing a single timeline. For achieving this, you create separate buttons for each timeline. Then you link each button to its individual timeline and set the override for the link..."
I only have one timeline and several chapter makers.  Should I be able to substitute "Chaper Makers" for timeline in the above?
For example, I have one time line with Chapter markers A, B, C, D, E
1st menu option is "Play All" and plays A-E in order.
"Play A" button plays A then goes back to menu.  Same for B, and D button.
"Play C' button plays C chapter then E (since they are related) then goes back to menu.
I have use chapter playlists in the past but can this be accomplished using end actions and overrides?

Thanks, that's what I thought.  Playlists are easier even though they need a few more mouse clicks.
    (Not Blu-Ray).

  • End Action

I'm working in the Adobe CS4 Suite.
I've created an Encore project as simple as possible. There is a main menu with ONE play button, the actual video/audio timeline, and then back to the main menu. That's it. Nothing fancy. You can't make them any more simple.
I've made the dvd and when you put it into a dvd player the main menu comes up and plays this very cool music. Looks great. You hit the play movie button and the video plays just fine w/audio. At the end of the movie, however, it just stops. It does not return to the main menu as I've asked it to.
I used the curly cues and thought I linked it correctly. I have now changed it to every possible configuration, but it still just stops.
What am I doing wrong????? It's driving me crazy. Can anyone help me on this?

I used the curly cues and thought I linked it correctly.
That little "coil" is the Pickwhip. It works very well, so long as one hits the right target - usually pretty easy to do.
For your Timeline, you will want the End Action to be either Return to Last Menu, or to the exact Menu. With one Button, you will not have that many choices from the drop-down list. If you had multiple Buttons, you would have options to choose to Return and have any of those Buttons ready to go. Nice touch.
Now, do you have ANY Overrides set anywhere? If your End Action is per the above, then you most likely do. You do NOT want any Overrides. Be very careful, when you go looking for an Override, as they can be almost anywhere. Do NOT use any Overrides, and as you find them, make sure that each and every one is set to Not Set.
    Good luck,

  • End action will not execute because of end action on the final chapter point

I will be referring to this video:
    http://tv.adobe.com/watch/learn-encore-cs4/creating-an-event-dvd/
I followed this exactly, except for the slide show (and I made a DVD instead of flash), but when I checked the project, I get the error message "End action will not execute because of end action on the final chapter point".
I don't understand.  I did not change any end points except for the one specified in this tutorial.  (About the Max footage for the very beginning, before the menu).  If anything was added, it was Adobe's doing.
I do notice that in 00:04 in the tutorial, there's a downward arrow on the very end of the timeline.  My timeline does not have this.  How was this done?
In the Encore software, after the timeline is loaded, there is no arrow at the very end.  Mine doesn't have that either.
I'm finding Adobe/Encore's way of making menus rather difficult.  With Pinnacle Studios (at least through 8-12), making menus was easy, and it set up the chapters for you.  Why can't there be an automated menu feature in Encore?
    Anyway, here's my project:
Main time line has 9 chapters. When clicking on their chapter points, all say End Action: not set.
When I click on the white bar above the lite purple footage of the time line, where the chapter point's bottom rest, it says, End Action: Not Set AND Menu Remote: Return to Last Menu.
All 9 chapter points are white.
In the flowcart, there is the DVD icon --> my few seconds opening credits --> menu that has a Play All and Scene Selection button
Play All goes to first chapter of video
Scene Selection (submenu #1) goes to 6 scenes, a next, previous, main menu.  All seem to be linked properly.
Scene Selection for scenes 7-9 are in the #2 submenu.  Has a previous button and a main menu button.   All seem to be linked properly.
Can anyone offer any advice?  Help?  I need to make this DVD and two others by the end of the week!
If you need more information, please let me know that too.

If I make a change in the timeline in Premiere, will that new change be reflected in the timeline of Encore?
If you used Adobe Dynamic Link, then yes, the Timeline will be updated. If you did not, then you will need to Export again, then Import into Encore. Watch out if you have already Transcoded, etc., and I'd name the new Timeline Export differently, Import that, use Replace Asset. When a Project is very new, and nothing much has been done, it will not be so picky. After a couple of links, etc., it gets VERY picky, and Replace Asset will help.
Is there a way to reload the project without having to redo all the menus and links?
If you did a Save_As, or still have your original Project, i.e. you started a completely new Project with a unique name, you can go back to the original.
    Hope that helps,
    Hunt

  • End Action not working

    Hi.
    Encore 4.0.1.048
I noticed that the end action of a menu doesn't work properly. It pounts to a timeline, which never shows.
    This was tested with ...
    1. CyberLink PowerDVD 9 Ultra
    2. MediaPlayer Classic
    3. The actual DVD (DVD-9)
    The structure looks like this:
Timeline (first play) -> general menu -> movie 1 menu -> movie timeline
The link between "movie 1 menu" and "movie timeline" dowsn't work properly.
    1. PowerDVD revers back to "general menu"
    2. MediaPlayer goes black
    3. The actual DVD just stops playing the DCD.
    Is this a known bug?
    Thanks,

Chapter Playlists do not work with Blu-ray disks - this is mentioned in the Release Notes for Encore CS4, so one is stuck with overrides.  Unfortunately nothing is said apart from the bald statement.  As to whether it is a feature of Blu-ray or a feature of Encore I do not know the answer.
I have posed this question to Adobe Support, but as ever I do not have much hope of a valid answer.  I expect that I shall spend much of my time re-stating that I do know how to start my computer, open a project in Encore, etc, etc.!
In my own case I want to do with Blu-ray what I have done many times in the past with DVD; have Play All for a single timeline on the main menu, a link to a sub menu which has buttons for each chapter.  Each chapter plays when selected, and at the end of the chapter you are returned to the sub-menu.  this works in Encore preview using overrides on the buttons, but I cannot get a disk produced from this to work in a player.

  • No button highlight after end action

After a video is played via button...the end action goes back to the video list, but no buttons are highlighted. In fact, even if I press the arrow buttons, I can't see anything but can still access videos just by guessing what is selected.
Button highlights are all on and there are no errors with the project (check project).
    Thanks in advance
    Kenny

Great news, and glad that you got the Timelines set up.
As for the WMV's, while Encore can Import them, they are not the ideal Assets, and can cause problems. If your Project is working fine for you, then just tuck that into the back of my memory, should you encounter issues with WMV Assets in the future.
The two ideal formats/CODEC's for DVD Projects are: DV-AVI Type II files w/ 48KHz 16-bit PCM/WAV (or DD AC3) Audio, or DVD-compliant MPEG-2's. I like using separate Audio and Video files, and then just add the Audio Asset to the appropriate Timeline.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
