Encore2 Preview Bad Stutter - AVIs Play in PP2 & WMP

Ive encountered a problem in EncoreDVD 2 with Preview playback. Im getting a very heavy stutter in both Audio & Video. If this were a mechanical player, and not a software one, Id check that nothing was hanging up the CTI. The CTI seems to hang, lurch ahead, then come back a few frames, before repeating the process. Four frames forward, two steps back. (Note: numbers in the previous sentence are totally arbitrary and used as an example only.) All files play smoothly in PP2 and WMP.
Project: NTSC 720x480 PAR 0.9, 1 main Timeline - 15;03;02, 2 transition Timelines - 00;24;03 (identical, except for the elements that come into the frame, 1 test Timeline for calibrating the system, especially Audio volume - 00;45;15, 2 Menus - 1 with 2 Buttons: Test Timeline and 1 button to next Menu, which has sound source selection: Stereo, DD 5.1 Surround and DTS. This button goes to the main Timeline (15;03;02) w/ 3 Audio Tracks. Both Menus have Audio linked, but no Motion of any kind. All Buttons are just arrows with no thumbnails. Even the text on them is static and is not part of the Button. There are two transitions, one is Play First and leads to the Test/Sound Select Menu (basically graphics of the Buttons and the text glide into view), the other is linked to the Sound Select Button to play before the Sound Select Menu comes in. Both have Audio. Both are made from Photoshop PSDs of the respective Menus and the animation of the Buttons and text is done in PP2. Obviously, the buttons are not active, until these transitions play and the real Menu comes up.
All Video material is Exported from PP2 as DV-AVI to be transcoded in Encore2. Audio assets are mostly AC3s, Exported from PP2, and there is 1 PCMWAV (the Stereo Audio file), and one DTS, Exported from the SurCode DTS encoder. So all of these assets are elemental streams.
Everything looks good on the Timelines - Audio & Video are the same length when Zoomed in. Check Project shows no errors.
System: Intel Duo-Core 3.2GHz, 4 GB Corsair Pro RAM, 4x500GB SATAII HDDs, 1x750GB ATA-100 HDD, nVidia Quadro 4500-512MB VRAM, Realtec AC97chipSB Live! 24-bit w/ AISO4All, XP-Pro/SP-2, Adobe Production Studio CS2, dual Hitachi 21" monitors. All unnecessary processes are shut down with EndItAll2 prior to any editing and HDDs are defragged daily (as soon as this started, I did a fresh defrag, as that is what it looked like to me). Other than the Adobe products, only other SW involved has been SurCode 5.1 (PP2 plug-in) and SurCode DTS (stand-alone). This is the first DTS Project that I have done, but nearly every other one had 5.1 Surround Sound from the SurCode via AC3.
This is the first problem that I have had in Encore2. It has played nicely with every asset that I have handed it. Ive done over 100 Projects with only two tiny hiccups, and all of these Projects were much, much larger with dozens of Timelines and multiple menus, many with Motion Backgrounds and animated Buttons. Ive used transition Video assets to go to Menus that were a lot more complex than in this Project.
The stutter is with all assets. Preview for here shows this problem, regardless of where I am previewing from. Again, all Video assets are DV-AVI from PP2 and play smoothly in PP2 and WMP. All Audio assets are PCMWAV, AC3 or DTS. They play smoothly in PP2 and WMP too. It is like Encores Preview Player hangs, breaks away, then bounces back a bit, before it hangs and breaks away again.
Right now, I am burning a DVD+RW to test and will also start this Project from the ground up, to test as well. Luckily, its a simple Project.
Has anyone else had this sort of behavior? Does anybody see anything in the above specs. to indicate any sort of problem with Preview? Did I just miss something critical, because the Project seemed so simple and I could do it in my sleep? If the DVD+RW burns OK, and tests fine, and the final DVD-5 does too, then its almost moot, except that I would love to find ou

Joe,
I did try switching off Automatic, per manual and posts here, but it had no effect. There is/was obviously some small difference between the playback engines, but so long as it's working now... Earlier posts here indicated that the E2 and PP2 playback engines were the same, so that had me puzzled. One thing that I did check was ver. of DirectX (still 9c), because I had a program a couple of months back that wanted to install 8a. Bad coding in that installer, in my book.
Neil,
I used to upgrade and update religiously, but app. by app. I am turning more to your way of thinking. If it works, do not touch it. Main reason that I did not want to do anything with Production Studio. It was all (well, almost all) working perfectly, and even with major Registry cleaning, programs have a way of leaving little nuggets behind that foul one up later.
Normally, my video driver would have been first guess, except that every other application, even some video-intensive ones, ran perfectly. Took a while, but maybe it'll benefit someone else in the future.
And yes, I had to turn off Apple's Automatic Update feature twice already today, but it probably has already resset itself. I need a check list of things like that to look at every time I boot the machine up!
Neil,
In a few days I may have a couple more DTS/5.1 questions, that I'll post in the Audio Assets forum. Almost done, but not quite.
Thanks,
Hunt

  • Bad quality when play mov or mp4

I want to play mov or mp4 by quicktime. In my laptop it play well but in my another computer the quality for video is very bad!
Following is the features of that computer:
    Windows XP Pro SP2
    VIA C7 Processor 1500MHZ 512M RAM
Graphics card: VIA/S3G UniChrome Pro IGP
I upload the screen snapshot of this problem on my blog. Please look at the following url:
    http://apolloxiao.blogspot.com/2009/11/bad-quality-when-play-mov-by-quicktime.ht ml
    Thank you very much!

My first thought was a video card driver because that will produce the streaks across the screen but usually more extreme.
Then it could be hardware related, do you know the history of the computer, as to any recent changes?
I don't really have a solution and don't want to string you along. But I swap around hardware, and me, I'd pull the video card out and make sure it's seated properly in the AGP or PCI slot on the motherboard. If it's not a on-board video card.
You seem to be showing a dual monitor set-up? If so wouldn't the primary be on the right?

  • My "older" songs stutter when played back

my pc is only 6 months old, but the first songs i downloaded from the itunes store
"stutter" when played back. they don't stutter on my ipod, and the more recenlty
downloaded songs are also ok. i have deleted them, reloaded from the ipod, updated
itunes, all to no avail. any ideas?

First a correction. I am using the latest version of FCP – 5.
Regarding the encoding, I have tried going from native HDV MPEG-2 to H.264 at 720P from 10 to 4 MB at 24, 30 and 29.97. The Mac seems to play everything back very well, but most PCs (the latest IBM T 40 – 43 series laptops) a couple of Dell desk tops (2.6 GHZ with 64 and 128 MB graphic cards) and a 3.2 GHz Shuttle PC with a 128 MB graphic card (that we routinely use to decode four MPEG-4, 4CIF images simultaneously and display on a 42” ED Plasma) choke/stutter to varying degrees with processor utilization hitting 100%.
So, the real issue here is what is the difference between a 720p trailer that I can download from Apple and what I can output using Compressor 2 at a similar data rate – other than the frame rate?
And why does the Compressor output stutter on most PCs?

Have just install itunes on a new PC running windows 8 and I am getting very bad distortion when playing music, any ideas. Music on web (youtube) is working fine.

  • 720P 30 H.264 videos stutter when played back on Windows

720P 30 H.264 videos stutter when played back on Windows
I have an interesting problem that I am hoping someone can help me with.
I have several short videos (2-4 minutes) in 1080i HDV that I have edited in FCP. When output to 720P 30 H.264 in Compressor at either 10 or 6 MB they look just drop dead gorgeous when played back on either of my dual processor Macs.
However when played back on a Windows machine with QuickTime 7, they stutter to the point that playback locks up. This happens on 1.5 GHz to 3.2 GHz P4 class machines with 512 MB to 1 GB of RAM and 64 to 128 MB video cards. On the 3.2 GHz P4, the processor utilization peaks at 100%. The interesting thing is that all of these same Windows machines have no problem playing back 720p 24 trailers at 6 MB.
    Thanks all.

  • Movie and music video previews won't completely play

Movie and music vid previews will only partially play then simply stop before the end, sometimes 1 min of a 3 min preview. In my preferences, streaming buffer size is set at large -- is there some other place where I can set a cache or buffer size to allow these to play all the way through?

  • Stutter when playing AVI-files

I have problem when playing AVI-files on my computer, they are stutter when they plays. The problem arises with a wide range of media players.
The problem started about 2 month ago. Before this time the same file(s) where playing OK!
The same file(s) are playing OK on other computers (tested today)...
I'm having a Satellite Pro M30, running XP pro SP2.
I have tried every thing I can come up with without ant success:
    Uninstalled almost every program.
    Checked for virus.
    Checked for Spy-wares.
    Shutdown all unnecessary processes.
    Defragment the HD.
    Help is wanted

    Hello
It is very strange. I have had similar situation but with all formats avi, mpg and even while watching DVDs but it was caused by my antivir application. The application has raised CPU usage and watching movies was not possible.
Believe me I have removed this stupid application and now it works well again. Now I use other small antivir guard application. I am very happy now.

  • Expert coaster maker needs help!  AVI plays - DVD issues??

The problem is that there seems to be a piece of footage that doesn't want to play right on the TV/DVD. It plays perfect in AVI format and through Encore preview (also Premiere).
Not all the video/audio is bad and stuttering - just a few parts. But, these parts pause/stop/start the playback.
    History of the footage:
Four DV tapes imported Used Premiere (all products latest CS3 with latest updates) to edit video (multiple camera angles, etc)
Exported attempts: Microsoft DV AVI, Uncompressed Microsoft AVI and direct to Encore
I've even just worked with the problem section with same results.
Note: all footage plays perfectly within Premiere, Encore and Windows media player.
There is nothing different about this piece of footage - in fact it's within a large clip that plays right up to the problem.
    Any ideas?
If there is other information I can offer please tell me what it is.
Thanks upfront for all the ideas and help!!
    Kevin

Try using RW - no coasters.
Is it the exact same section of footage that causes problems every time? Or are there minor variations?
    Try different hardware/software DVD players.
    Try different blank media.
Try burning at a slower speed.
Try building a disc image, then burning that through another program like
    ImgBurn

I can watch my custom created DVD in iDVD 7 preview but once the disc is burnt and I play it back in DVD Player, the screen is black with only the audio playing back. I have tried using three different blank DVD manufactures.

    Hi
Most probably depends on what movie codec You feed iDVD. May be You find any clue here.
    DVD quality
    1. iDVD 08, 09 & 11 has three levels of qualities. (version 7.0.1, 7,0.4 & 7.1.1) and iDVD 6 has the two last ones
    • Professional Quality
(movies + menus up to 120 min.) - BEST (but not always for short movies e.g. up to 45 minutes in total)
    • Best Performances
(movies + menus  less than 60 min.) - High quality on final DVD (Can be best for short movies)
    • High Quality (in iDVD08 or 09) / Best Quality (in iDVD6)
(movies + menus up to 120 min.) - slightly lower quality than above
    About double on DL DVDs.
    2. Video from
    • FCE/P - Export out as full quality QuickTime.mov (not self-containing, no conversion)
    • iMovie x-6 - Don't use ”Share/Export to iDVD” = destructive even to movie project and especially so
when the movie includes photos and the Ken Burns effect NOT is used. Instead just drop or import the iMovie movie project icon (with a Star on it) into iDVD theme window.
    • iMovie’08 or 09 or 11 are not meant to go to iDVD. Go via Media Browser or rather use iMovie HD 6 from start.
    3. I use Roxio Toast™ to make an as slow burn as possibly e.g. x4 or x1 (in iDVD’08 or 09  this can also be set)
This can also be done with Apple’s Disk Utilities application when burning from a DiskImage.
    4. There has to be about or more than 25Gb free space on internal (start-up) hard disk. iDVD can't
use an external one as scratch disk (if it is not start-up disc). For SD-Video - if HD-material is used I guess that 4 to 5 times more would do.
    5. I use Verbatim ( also recommended by many - Taiyo Yuden DVDs - I can’t get hold of it to test )
    6. I use DVD-R (no +R or +/-RW) - DVD-R play’s on more and older DVD-Players
    7. Keep NTSC to NTSC - or - PAL to PAL when going from iMovie to iDVD
(I use JES_Deinterlacer to keep frame per sec. same from editing to the Video-DVD result.)
    8. Don’t burn more than three DVDs at a time - but let the laser cool off for a while before next batch.
    iDVD quality also depends on.
    • DVD is a standard in it self. It is Standard Definition Quality = Same as on old CRT-TV sets and can not
    deliver anything better that this.
HD-DVD was a short-lived standard and it was only a few Toshiba DVD-players that could playback.
These DVDs could be made in DVD-Studio Pro. But they don’t playback on any other standard DVD-Player.
Blu-Ray / BD can be coded onto DVDs but limited in time to - about 20-30 minutes and then need
    _ Roxio Toast™ 10 Pro incl. BD-component
_ BD disks and burner if full length movies are to be stored
_ BD-Player or PlayStation3 - to be able to playback
The BD-encoded DVDs can be play-backed IF Mac also have Roxio DVD-player tool. Not on any standard Mac or DVD-player
Full BD-disks needs a BD-player (in Mac) as they need blue-laser to be read. No red-laser can do this.
    • HOW much free space is there on Your internal (start-up) hard disk. Go for approx. 25Gb.
less than 5Gb and Your result will most probably not play.
    • How it was recorded - Tripod vs Handheld Camera. A stable picture will give a much higher quality
    • Audio is most often more critical than picture. Bad audio and with dropouts usually results in a non-viewed movie.
    • Use of Video-editor. iMovie’08 or 09 or 11 are not the tools for DVD-production. They discard every second line resulting in a close to VHS-tape quality.
iMovie 1 to HD6 and FinalCut any version delivers same quality as Camera record in = 100% to iDVD
    • What kind of movie project You drop into it. MPEG4 seems to be a bad choice.
other strange formats are .avi, .wmv, .flash etc. Convert to streamingDV first
Also audio formats matters. I use only .aiff or from miniDV tape Camera 16-bit
strange formats often problematic are .avi, .wmv, audio from iTunes, .mp3 etc
Convert to .aiff first and use this in movie project
    • What kind of standard - NTSC movie and NTSC DVD or PAL to PAL - no mix.
(If You need to change to do a NTSC DVD from PAL material let JES_Deinterlacer_3.2.2 do the conversion)
(Dropping a PAL movie into a NTSC iDVD project
(US) NTSC DVDs most often are playable in EU
(EU) PAL DVDs most often needs to be converted to play in US
UNLESS. They are play-backed by a Mac - then You need not to care
    • What kind of DVDs You are using. I use Verbatim DVD-R (this brand AND no +R or +/-RW)
    • How You encode and burn it. Two settings prior iDVD’08 or 09
Pro Quality (only in iDVD 08 & 09)
Best / High Quality (not always - most often not)
Best / High Performances (most often my choice before Pro Quality)
    1. go to iDVD pref. menu and select tab far right and set burn speed to x1 (less errors = plays better) - only in iDVD 08 & 09
(x4 by some and may be even better)
    2. Project info. Select Professional Encoding - only in iDVD 08 & 09.
    Region codes.
iDVD - only burn Region = 0 - meaning - DVDs are playable everywhere
DVD Studio pro can set Region codes.
    1 = US
    2 = EU

What it turned out to be was the "quality" settings in iDVD. The total clip time was NOT over 2 hours or 4.7GB, yet iDVD created massive visual artifacts on the "professional quality" setting.
I switched the settings to "high quality" which solved the problem. According iDVD help, "high quality" determines the best bit rate for the clips you have.
I have NEVER seen iDVD do this before, especially when I was under the 2 hour and 4.7GB limits.
For anyone else, there seem to be 2 places in iDVD to set quality settings, the first is under "preferences" and the second under "project info." They do NOT seem to be linked (i.e. if you change one, the other is NOT changed). take care, Mario
TO GET IT TO WORK SLIGHTLY FASTER
    • Minimum of 25Gb free space on Start-Up hard disk
    • No other programs running in BackGround e.g. Energy-Saver
    • Don’t let HD spin down or be turned off (in Energy-Save)
    • Move hard disks that are not to be used to Trash - To be disconnected/turned off
    • Goto Spotlight and set the rest of them under Integrity (not to be scanned)
    • Set screen-saver to a folder without any photo - then make an active corner (up right for me) and set
pointer to this - turns on screen saver - to show that it has nothing to show

  • Finder preview not showing avi thumbnails on macbk air

Can anyone tell me why my macbook air is not showing .avi thumbnail previews in finder on my macbook air but I can see them on my imac? Both are running macOSx 10.6.6 and I am using VLC player. The macbk air shows the orange cone but i can only see the viedo when I double click and open vlc player. I don't have to do this on the imac. Both computers are showing the same finder settings and vlc settings as far as I can tell.

I'm curious as to why this is working at all on your iMac. Is your iMac using VLC player for playing .AVI? Or does .AVI open in Quicktime using 3rd party .AVI QT plug-ins?
I have a Mac Pro and my .WMV and .AVI files all show VLC media player Orange traffic icons instead of pretty thumbnails. I've been looking for a solution to show thumbnail previews, but haven't found one and assumed it was a limitation of the VLC media player.

  • AVI Plays to Fast in Premiere Pro CS4

I have an .AVI file that when it's imported into Premiere it plays much faster than the audio.  Strangely Windows Media Player plays the file without any issues.  In fact every player I have plays the movie with no problems, it's just Premiere that can't handle it properly.  I've tried changing the presets, updating the codecs (K-lite), saving in different formats, checking play speeds, and still no luck.
    Any ideas?
Filmed with a Toshiba S20, intel h.264 codec

    >updating the codecs (K-lite),
That could be a very BAD thing, since installing that codec pack has been known to cause many problems
You need to find the exact codec inside that file, and find/install only that codec
What CODEC is INSIDE that file? http://forums.adobe.com/thread/440037?tstart=0

  • RAM preview audio will not play through bluetooth headphones

I am using bluetooth headphones (Jaybird Freedom Sprint) to try and edit audio/video in after effects. However, when I go to Preferences>Audio Output Mapping and choose "Freedom Sprint" and click OK, close the preference window, and it will automatically go back to the default "Built in Output" when I open it back up. It will only play the sound through the Mac Pro tower I am using. Is there a way to get the headphone option output to stay permanently?? Is there a reason why it is not staying selected?  Another thing I forgot to mention is that all other sounds work (like iTunes, volume up/down) through the headphones except for the audio RAM preview in After Effects. How can I disable the audio from playing through the tower? Very frustrating!
BTW - the only time headphones actually work is when they are plugged into the tower. These ones obviously can't be plugged in.
    Thanks! (Screenshots provided for help)

Thanks! I definitely did try that first... (trying to find a solution with the headphones). You can't find any info about them online/their website. Regardless though, After Effects will not allow me to play the audio output through any other device except for the Mac Pro tower - even playing it through the LCD Cinema Display won't work.
    Thanks for your reply

  • Image Capture and Preview: bad PDF page size

When scanning to a PDF document with Image Capture, the resulting PDF always has an enormous page size. For example, a 3"x3" image scanned at 300dpi will appear as a 12.5"x12.5" page in the PDF. Scanning at 72dpi will create the appropriate size page, but the file is (of course) unsuitable for printing due to the low resolution. It's as if Image Capture (or the PDF creation routine) assumes the image is 72dpi even if it was scanned higher than that.
Similar behavior can be seen in the Preview app. Use the following steps to reproduce:
    1. Open a decent quality image from a digital camera.
    2. Choose Tools Menu -> Adjust Size...
    3. Be sure both "Scale proportionally" and "Resample image" are selected.
    4. Change the Resolution to 300 pixels/inch, change the Width to 3 inches and click OK.
    5. Choose File Menu -> Save As...
    6. Change the format to PDF, choose a location and file name to your liking, and click Save
    7. Open the new document in Preview and check the page size (Tools Menu -> Inspector)
Inexplicably, the page size is now 12.5 inches wide. I understand what it's doing, but I don't know why. The math is simple. Take the 3x3 inch example above: 3in * 300ppi = 900px / 72ppi = 12.5in
I feel it's very bad form for the software to assume you always work in "screen resolution" (72dpi). The PDFs the software makes is next to useless for archival purposes because of the incorrect size markings.
Anyone know of an alternative application to scan to PDF docs? The scanner's TWAIN software is not an option because it's PPC and won't run under Rosetta. How about an application that creates PDF documents from image files (besides Acrobat)? Best would be a way to fix the behavior or Apple's software.
    Thanks in advance.

I have had this problem for quite awhile.  Sometimes the preview plays all the way through, or not.  I had it in the previous version and now the new version.  There is no help from Apple/iTunes.  It seems odd that WE must continue to try and find the solution to THEIR errors without any comments or help from Apple.
