Encrypted Disk Image Won't Partition After Resize

Hi,
I have a 10 GB encrypted disk image on my macbook (type OS Extended (journaled)). I've pretty much filled up the space so I want to resize. I go into disk utility with the disk unmounted and 'Resized' it to 20GB. Then I mount it and go into the Partition tab. I drag the corner all the way down to fill up the space and hit Apply. It goes through the motions without error but it does not actually extend the partition to the resize. On the right next it then says something to the effect that the disk is read only and cannot resize the partition. The write status is read/write until I click apple....then it switches to 'Unmounted, read-only'. Any ideas on how to fix this? It's driving me crazy. I can provide screenshots when I'm home from work if necessary.
Thanks
Nick

Here are some screenshots of before and after I try to partition (after the resize):
After attempting to resize the partition it says 'The disk is not writable and can't be partitioned' and 'The disk is too small to contain partitions'. The disk write status also changed to read only. Doesn't make sense to me...anyone know how to fix this?
Thanks

After updating to 10.4.10 disk images (dmg-files) won't open any more. I get the error message "The following disk images failed to mount:.. Reason: Device not configured". This happens every time on every disk image. These same images mounted just fine before the update.

  • Disk Image won't mount after 10.4.9 upgrade

After I installed the latest update, OSX can't mount the disk images after download anymore! Any explanation folks? :^)
It doesen't necessarily have to do with the update of course, but it is quite likely I think? Grateful for any help!

Choose any .dmg and get info (command-i). Turn the disclosure triangle under "Open With". It should be "DiskImageMounter". If this is not the chosen application follow this path to choose it:
    /System/Library/CoreServices/DiskImageMounter.app.
    Then choose "Change all".
If that isn't it. You may be able to repair this with 10.4.9 PPC Combo Update.
This is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before. It has worked well for many.
Remember to Verify Disk before update and repair permissions after update from /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.
    Let us know.

  • Encrypted disk image partitions

I wish to create an encrypted disk image using Disk Utility. One of the menus, labeled Partitions, contains 8 choices, 5 of which begin with the words "Single Partition." The 3 that I think I need to consider are:
    Apple Partition Map
    Master Boot Record Partition Map
    GUID Partition Map
I have no idea which to choose to simply store personal data files. Is there some place where all of this is explained, or can someone please explain it here.
    Thanks, Ralph

Thanks to both responders. Assuming that I only wish to install data files, I don't care about booting an operating system from the disk image that I wish to create. Therefore, I assume that V.K.'s response answers my particular needs.
However, that brings up another question. If one chooses a GUID Partition Map to be able to boot in an INTEL Mac, does that mean one cannot boot from that partition with a PPC Mac? Also, the same question with an APM Partition Map. In other words, does one have to choose one or the other and there is no way to do both, that is, be able to boot from the same partition with either PPC or INTEL? Just wondering...

  • Can you resize a encrypted disk image on a sparsebundle disk image?

I created a 50GB encrypted sparsebundle disk image on my desktop. I named it BOB and also named the encrypted disk image BOB.
    It's now full.
I've just made it 60GB with Disk Utility.
I opened it but on trying to copy a 4GB file into it, I got a message saying my sparsebundle disk image is too small.
Note: Disk Utility says the following:
    BOB sparsebundle is 61.4GB
    mounted volume BOB is 52.1GB
    Hope that's clear.
Any help would be most appreciated.

I created a 50GB encrypted sparsebundle disk image on my desktop.
    hdiutil resize -size 60g BOB.sparsebundle
Result: "resize failed. File or directory does not exist"
You need to tell hdiutil where to find the target BOB.sparsebundle file. You could either specify a relative or absolute file path in the command itself, or else you could first change the current working directory to the Desktop. So if you wanted to pursue using Terminal, the second way would be to enter this command:
    cd ~/Desktop
and then try the same hdiutil command again.
I'm not familiar with the hdiutil command, and I don't know if the above would work. My own feeling is that trying to manipulate an image file by experimenting with hdiutil entails a risk of corrupting the image file and losing its contents, and it is therefore essential to back up the image file first. But if you are going take the time and space needed for a backup, you might as well instead just create a new, empty 60GB (or larger!) sparsebundle disk image, and copy the contents of your old disk image into the new one. This would not involve any risks, and you'd end up with the larger disk image that you wanted. You could then delete the original, if you wished.

  • Corrupted files within encrypted disk images

    Greetings Apple Hivemind:
I've run across a repeatable problem when using encrypted disk images from Disk Utility.  Essentially, I'll create an image using settings like are shown below:
The disk image is then used for storing data.  In my case, this is usually data for Adobe Lightroom.
At first, this worked very well, and I housed the disk images on my household NAS, connecting via samba (smb) to it on my Mac.  Over time, however, something odd started happening:  Files on those encrypted images began getting corrupted whenever I tried writing new data to them.
My first incident was where Lightroom informed me that the catalog it was trying to open was corrupted.  I  tried to create a new one on the same encrypted volume, and it too was instantly flagged as corrupted.  I opened the individual image files on the volume with no problem, so I wasn't thinking that the volume was the culprit.  That is, until I tried dragging new image files to it manually.  The new files were immediately either completely unreadable, or a mish-mash of the content of random OTHER files on the volume!
The result was that all old data seemed intact, but I could no longer write new data to the volumes without major data corruption issues.  I thought that this was isolated to one volume in particular, but it soon started happening on ALL of my encrypted volumes eventually.  Including those which were not, and never had been, housed on my NAS, but were on my local hard drives.
I've since "evacuated" all my data from these images, since the ones created by Disk Utility appear to be useless, and am seeking an alternative.
Is this something that anyone else has encountered when using encrypted disk images?  It seems like this is something I should really open a support ticket for, but I can't say I've ever tried it, so I don't know how successful it would be to do so.

    bbonn wrote:
I should add that I've tried using the "Repair" and "Verify" functions of Disk Utility on the volumes, and despite the obvious issues that exist in them, the utility doesn't find (or fix) any inconsistencies.
Are you repairing/verifying the actual disk images, or just the partition they're on?  If the partition, it won't look inside them.
Drag one to Disk Utility's sidebar, select it, then use Verify or Repair.  Note: the usual messages may not appear on the DU window.  Click the Log icon in the toolbar or select Window > Show Log from the menubar to see them.

  • Indexing of encrypted disk images permanently disabled in 10.8?

In the past, I've had no trouble forcing Spotlight to index my encrypted disk image, using the command in Terminal:
    sudo mdutil -i on /Volumes/Encrypted_Data
After entering that command, my encrypted disk image was indexed and searchable using Spotlight.
A couple weeks ago I updated from Lion to Mountain Lion. Today I noticed Spotlight wasn't showing any results from my encrypted disk image. So went back to Terminal and entered the above command. Instead of successfully activating indexing, Terminal gives me this message:
    /Volumes/Encrypted_Data:
                Indexing disabled.
Is this procedure now impossible in Mountain Lion?
Is there any way to enable indexing of this encrypted disk image? I can't get it to work.
    Thanks.

I appear to have solved the problem to get Spotlight to index a disk image.  My image was an encrypted disk image.  I was able to get spotlight to work when it was new, but now Spotlight won't index it.  Here is the solution that I found:
After double clicking and mounting disk the image, open Disk Utility, select the disk image file, then click unmount in the Toolbar.  Wait until it is unmounted, then click mount again.   Then go to terminal and try mdutil -sa .  If it is still not enabled, try to sudo mdutil -i on option.  The unmounting and remounting must be done everytime the image is opened.

  • Encrypted Disk Image creation slow?

I just got a new MBP with Leopard. I have created a number of encrypted disk images in the past using Tiger and a MBP and have not had any trouble. This weekend I tried a few times to create a 50 gig encrypted disk image (128 AES) on an external drive and after going through the process of setting it up and waiting for it to be created, (and watching the progress bar as it was being created), after about 45 minutes NO progress was showing on the progress bar. I ended up having to cancel the creation a few times because I thought something was going wrong. I’m not sure if there is a problem creating the disk image, or leopard is slow, or what.
Does anyone know how long, on average, it would take to create an encrypted disk image of this size using leopard? I just want to know if there is a problem doing this on my MBP. Thanks for the help.

A regular 50 GB disk image takes 50GB of space, no matter if it is full of files or empty.
A 50 GB sparse disk image only takes up the amount of space equivalent to that of its enclosed files. So if the 50GB sparse image only has 1 GB of files inside, the image won't be much bigger than 1GB.
A sparse bundle is similar to a sparse image, but instead of a single file it is a folder package with many, many enclosed files called bands. A new file added to the sparse bundle will tend to modify only a few bands. This makes incremental backups of a sparse bundle more efficient because only the changed bands need to be backed up again. Any change to a sparse or regular disk image will mean that the entire image will need to be backed up again.
If you regularly add/remove files to a disk image, and you intend to back up that disk image with Time Machine, a sparse bundle is definitely the way to go. The other types will fill up your TM volume very quickly.

  • Encrypting Disk Images

    Hi,
I've followed several guides to create an encrypted disk image so i can hide some private files on my Mac - All the guides said the same way and one was the one here on Apples site and still i have no luck.
I create the disk image and when i put the files in it, eject the disk and try to mount the disk again from the DMG file it doesn't ask for a password. The only solution i can see is that it is because this does not work as i am admin and trying to password a file in my on account? Does this only work for shared folders with other users or is there another explanation as to why this won't work?
    Thanks

Well Keychain is really there for your convenience. It remembers your passwords so that you don't have to enter them when they are needed but it is sort of a security risk of you just leave your mac sitting there and your keychain unlocked. However, these passwords can only be used while the keychain is unlocked. An admin password is needed to actually view the password.
You can lock an unlock the keychain manually or have it lock automatically after a certain amount of time (in keychain access go to Edit -> Change settings for keychain "login") or when your mac sleeps. But you might want to consider the security of your mac as a whole instead of just the keychain. For example: is it easier to keep the keychain locked or is it easier to prevent access to your computer as a whole (like disabling automatic login and requiring a password from waking from sleep?).

  • Password no longer works with encrypted disk image.

I have an encrypted disk image on my macbook pro. I enter the password every time I open the disk image. Last week it stopped accepting the password. I checked in keychain where I'd saved the PW when first creating the disk image and verified I was entering what was saved there. It matched what I've been entering but still no luck. I attenpted to pull an old version of the disk image from time machine and that still won't open with what I know is the password I've always used.
    Any tips?

try doing SMC reset the following article tells how to do that:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
after doing this reset try again to enter the password for the disk image, if it still doesn't work there is no way to bypass the passcode on the disk. the following article talk about filevault:

  • Encrypted Disk Image - Can't find it

I just created a 1GB encrypted disk image using the Disk Utility program on my macbook (Macintosh HD). After I created it, I put some files in it. Then I "ejected" it, logged off, and then logged back on. It is no longer on my desktop. I tried doing a search and still can't find it.
So...how did I find it and how do I create a short cut so I don't run into this again?
    Regards,
    New Apple User

To expand a little on Steve Sherriff1's answer: when you created the encrypted disk image in Disk Utility, it created a file with a .dmg extension, saving it wherever you specified (if you open Disk Utility and again select 'New -> Blank Disk Image' from the File menu, it should still be pointing to the last location you save to). That .dmg (disk image) file is opened as a virtual disk on the desktop when first created. When you eject it, it won't automatically reappear on the desktop; you need to find the .dmg file (using Steve's tip) and double-click the .dmg to mount the disk image. For easier mounting, you can put an alias to the .dmg file on the Desktop, in the Dock, or in the lower-left pane of your Home folder.

  • DIsk Utility, encrypted disk image

I cannot create an encrypted disk image. I have searched through the discussion forums here but have not found an answer. After I select the name, location, image format, encryption and I hit save, I get an error that says "Unable to create '[file name].dmg'. (Resource busy)". I've tried different locations, image format and encryption, but I keep getting the same message. Any ideas what the problem is and how I can fix it? Thanks.
NB: I want to create the disk image so that I can encrypt a few files with sensitive information. I do not want to use filevault, as I understand that it has downsides (e.g., free space needed to turn on and off, and backup with TM).

    1. Open the Disk Utility application. (If you don't know where it is, search for it in the spotlight.)
    2. At the top of the Disk Utility window, you will see several icons. Click on the one labeled "New Image". Before you do this, make sure that none of the drives on the left column (including "Macintosh HD") are selected.
    3. A new window opens. It asks you for the name you want to give the new disk, and where you want to save it to (you can choose to save it on the desktop). It will also ask you for the volume size of the new disk (the default setting is 100MB, but you can give it any size you want). It also asks you for the volume format, encryption (128- or 256-bit; 128 should be enough, unless you want to make it more secure, but compromise a bit of speed), partition (there is no need to partition; in fact, many recommend no partition at all), and image format (if you plan to frequently add and delete files on your encrypted disk, "sparse bundle disk image" is recommended".
    4. Click "create". It will ask you to create a password for your disk image.
    5. The new disk image should appear on your desktop (or other destination you chose). Double-click on the image to open it. It will ask you for your password. Enter the password you selected. You can choose to save the password on your keychain. That defeats the purpose of encrypting the disk image, since anyone who gains access to your computer will not have to enter the password to open the disk image and see its contents.
I hope this step-by-step guide helps you. Let me know if something is not clear or if I got something wrong.

  • Unable to create an encrypted disk image in Lion

disk utility gives the error Unable to create "Volume.dmg." (error - 60008) when creating an encrypted disk image. I am using the following steps:
        1.    Open disk utility
        2.    Select the disk (internal or external) to create the image on
        3.    Select File>New>Blank Disk Image…
        4.    Save As: 'Volume'
        5.    Name: Volume
        6.    Size: 50GB
        7.    Format: Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
        8.    Encryption: 128-bit AES encryption
        9.    Image Format: read/write disk image
        10.    Click the Create button
        11.    Password dialog appears
        12.    When I enter a password the dialog closes after entering only a few characters i.e. before I've finished typing, and the following error message displays:
    Unable to create "Volume.dmg." (error - 60008)
I have previously, successfully, created encrypted disk images in Snow Leopard, and I don't know why I can't in Lion
    Does anyone have any ideas?

    Thanks for this Thomas.
I've tried naming the image differently, but still received the error, I did however try different permutations for the password.
The error seems to happen if I use a purely numerical password string and occurs on input of the 10th numerical character, if I start with numerical character but use an alpha before the 9th number I can continue and create a password, and I can create a password  if I start with an alpha and switch to numerals after the first alpha character, purely alphabetical passwords are fine too.
It seems that Lion doesn't like purely numerical passwords greater than 9 characters, whereas Snow Leopard wasn't so fussy. Seems it's a bit of a bug.
    Thanks for your help

  • Unable to create an encrypted disk image with Disk Utility

    Hi:
With our upgrade to Lion a few weeks ago, we're now unable to create an encrypted disk image of any type using Disk Utility any more. This problem occurs on 3 different machines, and is reproducible whether one is using an internal HD or an external FW HD. We can successfully create nonencrypted disk images.
This is a duplicate post with all the details here: https://discussions.apple.com/message/18469359#18469359
We haven't had any luck with a solution trying various permissions fixes as helpfully suggested by other readers in response to the error message # (-60008 error), so I'm hoping that someone else has run across a solution from the encrypted disk image perspective and that this tag line will generate some help.
    Thank you!
