Encrypted router help, please

I wanted to secure my Linksys wireless router. Went through the setup procedures and all appeared fine. But my iBook won't access it, even after entering the password. I didn't try my pc on it, I just disabled the password for now till I can get it figured out.
I used to not have neighbors but now I do and I want to make sure they don't access my home network.
LinkSys - BEFW11S4 ver.2

you could try this, it will keep the average computer user off your internet connection.
log into the linksys and turn off the "broadcast SSID" option
also turn off the encryption for now
now on your mac click on the air port radar icon in the menu bar
you should not see your network any more
click on other and type in the name of your network (change it to something besides linksys if you have not already on your linksys router)
now you should be connected, and your linksys WIFI signal will not show up on any ones computer that searches for wireless networks.
you can go a step further in preferences/network and set this location up as a default so whenever you are in range of your home network you will automatically connect to it, no typing passwords or any of that nonsense.
warning: no one will be able to log onto you network now unless they know the SSID which will keep people from poaching your internet connection but your not on an encrypted network so if you live next door to a hacker they may be able to intercept your wireless transmissions if they are so inclined. so you can turn encryption on to avoid this and enter the password into your keychain. you will get a pop up window and you will have to press ok to connect to your network.
hope this helps

  • Westell 7500 Wireless modem/router help please.

    Hi, newbie here
I recently purchased a laptop for the first time in my life and I am trying to connect it to a wireless connection, which I have never done as well. I am using a Westell 7500 modem provided to me by Verizon. I did a bit of researched and apparently (if I'm correct) I don't need a wireless router or any other devices to get wireless internet.
If I am correct, I went to my modem's IP address and turned on wireless. I set up and changed the SSID and enabled a pass phrase, and I connected to the network at the bottom right. It connects, but there is no internet connection. What I mean by this is that it connects to the device successfully, but there is a triangular yellow warning sign with an exclamation mark on my internet bar at the bottom right and in my "Network and Sharing center" it says "no internet access."
Am I doing something wrong or do I need to buy an wireless router? Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

You do not need to buy  a wireless router. the 7500 will do the job! I assume you have windows 7. OPen network and sharing center, manage wirleless networks, do you have any entries for your Verizon  ISP?  If yes delete the entry and go to step 2.
If no go to desktop and press f1 to bring up help -  search for (Setp 2)  "set up wirless network" and let us know if that works for you. Welcome to the forum

  • No luck with WRTU54g Router - help please

My brother recently purchased a Linksys WRTU54g router and it came today, we were told that we could connect to the internet through this by connecting to our BTHomehub wirelessly and therefore can then plug an ethernet cable from our xbox 360 into the linksys router and connect to xbox live.
However after hours of trying we have had no luck, any help would be greatfully appreciated.
    Thank you.
    Danielle.

    1. If you already have a Wireless Router then you need to connect your existing router from the Ethernet Port on Internet Port of the LInksys router...
    2. Connect a computer to the Ethernet Port of the Linksys Router and open an Internet Explorer browser page on your wired computer(desktop). In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1...
Leave username blank & in password use admin in lower case...
    3. On the set-up tab, change the Router's IP Address to 10.10.10.1 and click Save Settings...Once you are done wait for 30 seconds and unplug the power cable from the router and wait for another 30 seconds and plug it back in...Your router should be configured for Internet Access...
    4. You can then connect your xbox to the linksys router and it should work fine...

  • Re-setting up router HELP PLEASE!!

Hello, i have the WRT54G wireless-g broadband router, I recently had my computer crash that i had set up the network with so i had to reformat my computer the problem is, I used the auto-generate key that was like 40 letters/numbers long and i saved the code in a word file on my computer, now when i put in the cd to re-set it up, its already set up and asks for a password... takes 5 minutes goes to 100% asks for a password again and does it all over again (goes in loops). Is there anyway to fix my network?/find out the WEP/WPA key or reset up my network all over again? thank you so much -Aaron

    Have you reset the router?
Hold the reset button on the router for 90 seconds
while still holding the button, unplug the power cable after about 20 seconds and then replug it back in. (do not release the reset button yet).
Once 90 seconds has gone by stop holding the reset button and then let go. It should reset the router back to the normal admin/password 192.168.1.1.
    Hope this helps/works.

  • Verizon USB 720 - router help please!

Hope this isn't a repeat - I searched & couldn't find anything on my Modem.
I live in a rural area and use the Verizon USB 720 modem for my home PC.  I just got a Dell laptop and want to connect it to the internet via my Verizon service.  I heard I can do this with a Linksys router.  Which one do I need, and what else is required?  I don't want to pay $$$ & then find out it can't be done. Also, how far can I go with my laptop and still have an internet connection?  Any help would be appreciated.

Yes. It is possible. Technically it is an access point you'll need. But you can use a router as well. Routers are usually cheaper but more limited then the versatile Linksys WAP... devices. If you want to use a router you should check this thread.
The other alternative could be to get a wireless adapter for your desktop and create an ad-hoc wireless connection between the desktop and the laptop. Basically, your desktop would then play access point. I cannot tell how good this works. I think it should work without problems but I have never tried it myself. Moreover, you may be limited to a single wireless connection, i.e. a single ad-hoc wireless connection from the desktop at each time (in case you want to get a second laptop in the future). But I am not sure on this either.

  • Router help please

i just moved to minnestoa from florida and brought only my macbook. when i got here the internet was a little slow so i got a seperate router for my room. i installed it on my macbook and set it up there.....now my question is, i just purchased a macbook pro and am thinking about giving my macbook to my parents in florida so they can have another laptop, do i need to reintall the wirless router disk on my new lap top or am i ok not having it there? i'm new to this and searched the forums but couldn't find anything.

You need to make sure that you have an active internet connection through your dsl/cable modem. If you don't have internet connection through your modem then you need to contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP) and tell them that you need to have your internet connection back because your router will not work if you don't have an active internet connection through your modem.
If you do have internet connection from the modem all you need to do is to make sure that the modem is connected to the Internet Port of the router ( the port that's by itself ) and to connect one pc to the ethernet port (example to port 1 ). Access the router set-up page ( in the address bar type in 192.168.1.1). Set the wireless settings. Click on the Security tab and disable Block Anonymous Internet Request. Click on the Setup tab and change the Local ip address to 10.10.2.1 and make sure that the Internet connection type is set to Automatic, save the settings. When you do that you will loose the page. Just do a power cycle (unplug the power cord of the router for 30 seconds and plug it back again). Check if your online.

  • HELP PLEASE !!! Can't get Linksys router to work.

    Okay, I am a new owner of an Alu-imac 2.4 ghz !!!!!!
Installed Leopard last night and wanted to get my internet set up and ……. IT DIDN'T WORK !!!!!!!!
The Diagnostic thing wouldn't recognize my internet.
    (Info for you):
    1) I have an Linksys wireless router that is right behind the computer. I have to have a router for my 360 and my PS3 across the room. So I had the cable internet modem hooked to the wireless router and then to the computer. (just like it was hooked up to my PC)
    2) I tried everything I could think of to get it to work. The diagnostic show that the Ethernet had a green light, but it would not let me online at all.
    3) So then I tried unplugging the modem and the router and still nothing. (It gets stuck on the page where it asks "do you use a cable modem, if so please restart it and then hit continue") And still nothing.
    4) So then I tried to just run the internet straight from the cable modem to the imac, and this didn't work either….. Then for some reason like a 1/2 later the network settings brought up the IP and everything and I had internet.
    5) *But I need my Linksys router to be used !!!!* Is there any advice any of you can give me !!! I can call Linksys if I need to when I get off work, but I thought maybe some of you could help me first. *I did have to call Linksys before I could get the router to work on my old PC as well*, so maybe it's something with them ????
HELP PLEASE !!!! I want to love my Imac so much.

fonz500, are you still having this issue or is this now a dead thread?

  • HELP PLEASE ROUTER SETTINGS

Hi, i cannot access my router settings through my browser i know the ip address I'm suppose to go to in my browser  but when it asks me for my user i don't know what it is nor my password. I already changed my password on my router  do i use that to access my router settings through the internet? i tired to use my router password for the password for the settings but it doesn't work? What am i suppose to but as my dam password and username. When i use my laptop to connect to my router its shows up as EDDIELAN that is what it shows up as when i searched for wifi connections on my laptop. Am i suppose to use EDDIELAN as my user and the password on my router for the password on the setting pagee?
Also currently my router i think has a time when i can use my internet. For example i can't use my internet between 3:30pm and 7:00 pm. How do i disable that crap so i can use my internet anytime i want? Can i control the time i use my internet through the settings? Somebody has set this in my router and i know how have to get rid of it! i want to be able to use my internet when ever i want! help please how do i disable that?

As the password of the router is not working..You have to reset the router for 25-30 seconds and then, try to access the router setup page...Once you reset the router, all the settings on the router will go to factory default...Now,you can configure the router from scratch.

I'm using a WRT54G2 Router.  It's wired to a Motorola Surfboard modem.  I can't access the manual config 192.168.1.1 and two other computers that are wireless in the house rely on my access point to be able to use the internet. Problem is I'm getting that good o'l "You are connected to the access point, but the internet cannot be found."  I've tried assigning static IP's, power cycling, release/renew in IPCONFIG,  I've whispered sweet nothings into my PC's ear...etc...etc...etc... I CAN access the manual config through the one laptop when it's wired to the modem though. Please for the love of everything someone help me!!!!!
Here's what IPCONFIG /ALL says about my computer.

Are you trying to access 192.168.1.1  wirelessly?   If so, stop doing this.  Wireless access to 192.168.1.1  often fails.  Use a computer that is wired to the router when you want to change router settings.
    1)  I assume that the "IPCONFIG /ALL"  info that you posted was obtained when your computer was wired directly to your modem  --  is that correct?
    2)  When you did the "IPCONFIG /ALL", was your computer wired to the modem with ethernet cable, or USB cable?
    3)  Your network should be setup like this:
    Motorola Surfboard -- WRT54G2  )))     ((( wireless computer(s)
                                        |--- wired computer
Motorola Surfboard ethernet port wired to WRT54G2 Internet port, using ethernet cable.
Wired computer connected to a LAN port on the WRT54G2, using ethernet cable.
Nothing connected to USB port of Motorola Surfboard.
Wireless computers connect directly (and wirelessly) to WRT54G2, not to your wired computer.
Is above the way your system is setup?  If not, how is your system setup?
    4)  Please clarify the problem that you are having.  Are you saying that your computer simply cannot access 192.168.1.1 , or that it cannot access the Internet, or that you cannot get any of your computers to access the Internet through the WRT54G2?    Are you trying to connect this computer by wire or wirelessly to the WRT54G2?
    5)  Can any computer access the Internet through the WRT54G2?

No, I'm trying to acess it through a wired computer. The computer I'm on right now is wired to the access point which is wired to the motorola modem. I can access the login page(as well as the internet) through the computer wired to the router(which, as stated just a few sentences ago, I'm currently using), but when i type in admin for the password it literally kicks me right back into the login screen with both username and password feilds blank. My entire system is setup the way you described that it should be ethernet cable and all. Trust me that was the first thing I checked. The IPCONFIG /ALL is the status of the computer wired to the router. The other two computers in the house (one is a laptop with wireless card and the other is a PC that I bought a wireless card for) cannot access the internet. They used to be able to until recently and I've made no changes to any of the settings.
I also tryed power cycling the system. It granted wireless access to the wireless computers as well as my playstation 3, BUT, I lost internet access on the wired computer. Imagine my frustration. I power cycled again then I was back to square one. No wireless access but access with the wired pc. It's not set to a static IP address either.

    D)  Have you upgraded the router's firmware?
    E)  After the firmware upgrade, did you reset the router to factory defaults, then setup the router again from scratch?
    F)  You said that the "IPCONFIG /ALL" was obtained when you were connected to the WRT54G2 router.  But this looks like IPCONFIG data from connection to the Motorola Surfboard modem.  Are you sure this IPCONFIG /ALL is from connection to the WRT54G2?
    G)  Have you been running unsecured wireless?   Or are you using encryption?  If you are using unsecured wireless, perhaps your neighbor logged into your router (by accident or intentionally) and changed your login password.
I would suggest that you reset your router to factory defaults, then setup the router again from scratch.  If you saved a router configuration file, DO NOT use it.
Please use the following procedure to reset your router:
    1) Power down all computers, the router, and the modem, and unplug them from the wall.
    2) Disconnect all wires from the router.
    3) Power up the router and allow it to fully boot (1-2 minutes).
    4) Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds, then release it, then let the router reset and reboot (2-3 minutes).
    5) Power down the router.
    6) Connect one computer by wire to port 1 on the router (NOT to the internet port).
    7) Power up the router and allow it to fully boot (1-2 minutes).
    8) Power up the computer (if the computer has a wireless card, make sure it is off).
    9) Try to ping the router. To do this, click the "Start" button > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt. A black DOS box will appear. Enter the following: "ping 192.168.1.1" (no quotes), and hit the Enter key. You will see 3 or 4 lines that start either with "Reply from ... " or "Request timed out." If you see "Reply from ...", your computer has found your router.
    10) Open your browser and point it to 192.168.1.1. This will take you to your router's login page. Leave the user name blank, and in the password field, enter "admin" (with no quotes). This will take you to your router setup page. Note the version number of your firmware (usually listed near upper right corner of screen). Exit your browser.
If you get this far without problems, try the setup disk (or setup the router manually, if you prefer), and see if you can get your router setup and working.
If you cannot get "Reply from ..." in step 9 above, your router is likely dead.  Report back with this problem.
If you get a reply in step 9, but cannot complete step 10, then either your router is dead or the firmware is corrupt.   Report back with this problem.
If you need additional help, please state the results of steps 9 and 10. Also, if you get any error messages, copy them exactly and report back.
Please let me know how things turn out for you.

My apologies for the delay in response, things have been hectic lately.  Alrighty, I did all that you said and here are some interesting results, I'll break down the results by each machine that a fiddled with:
    Wired Desktop PC:
-I got no response when trying to ping the router
-Could not access the 192.168.1.1 configuration screen, not even the prompt for username and password
-When using the installation disk AND the installation program i downloaded off the Linksys website it would not detect the router.
Wireless Laptop(this is where i think it gets interesting):
-I was able to fully install and automatically configure the router by using the installation disk
-I could ping and get full response from the router both wirelessly and while it was directly wired to the router
-I could also access the configuration menu 192.168.1.1 in my web browser
-I also had a backup copy of the latest firmware for the router on my flash drive, so I updated the firmware through the laptop.
-The laptop was using the router as it's access point, however the internet could not be found.
If I wasn't at a total loss before I tried all this, I certainly am now. Could it be a problem with the network settings on the PC that is wired? Perhaps a faulty ethernet port? Your thoughts?
Well, that's where it left off, I got no responses back from anyone after the last post. Help!!!

As you are able to access your router's web interface you should now try to re-configure it...

  • Wireless network has lost its range...  help please

    Hi,
I have an 80211B network using Airport cards in 3 ibooks and for 2 years the range has been fine all over the house, outside by the barbeque ect... Suddenly and recently all of the range is gone beyond about 15 feet of the wireless router except on a few occasions. I thought maybe that my my neighbors wireless network was interfearing since they recently added wireless to their house. However, I had them ungplug their rpouter yesterday and it made no difference.
I have not added any wirelss devices such as cell phone recently so nothing has changed as far as that goes in my house. I even went out and bought a Linksys wireless G router and extension antennas to see if it would make a difference but it has not. The nonly think I have not tried is a range extender but I have a feeling since the signal is so weak 20 feet away, it will not do anything? I have already tried changing channels, turning off encryption and a few other adjustments and nothing is working.
    HELP PLEASE!
    Thank you, Mitch Farber

It sounds to me like something in the area is intefering. Cell phones don't necessarily do this, but cordless home phones will- Or someone has gotten into your Router and done some fiddling. There are firmware hacks out there for the Lynksys- some that allow you to really crank the power.. as a test of course.
