Encryption chat failed

I am trying to screen share with my folks in Spain - to help them out with other issues - but it won't let me.
We've been using Skype for voip and video because they were familiar with that.
But now i want to switch to iChat as it does everything and might be better (you never know).
So I set them up a .Mac account as part of my family pack and configured iChat me as a buddy.
However all text chats, video chats and screen sharing fails, due to encryption errors.
The firewall is off on my and my Dad's Mac.
Is this a universal problem? Is it Skype maybe?

Chat is not available over the weekend.

  • Encrypted Chat Fails

    Suddenly, I'm unable to engage in encrypted chat with anyone. In the past, when I've had this problem, it has been easily fixed by deleting and refreshing certificates (in KeyChain Access) on one or both ends of the communication, but that's not working now. I've tried everything I can think of: restarting iChat, logging off of AIM, rebooting the Mac, deleting iChat preferences files. Nothing works. This appears to affect only me and happens with everyone in my buddy list. Un-encrypted chat works fine. I've made no changes to my configuration that I can recall, since I was last able to engage in encrypted chat successfully.
    Suggestions on how to proceed would be much appreciated!

    I'm seeing the same. Audio chat and Video chat are fine. Encryption fails with text chat.
    I also tried a few things, including revoking my certificate from the .Mac site, removing my certificate from Keychain Access, then starting up iChat again. A new certificate was issued through the iChat assistant. Still, encryption fails with text chat. It's fine with audio and video chat. I verified the new certificate was in use by the person I'm audio/video chatting with - by clicking on the lock in the upper right of the audio/video chat box and looking at the certificate info.
    I can text chat if I disable encryption in the iChat preferences. All software is up-to-date on 10.4.10 via Software Update.

  • How to retrive data from encrypted backup(failed in itunes) - i have the password!!

    I know there are other software that may help to retrive the data but it doesn't work with encrypted backup.
    Now i have the password, i have the encrypted backup (failed to recover in itunes).
    What can i do? is it possible to remove the password from the encrypted backup provided that i have the password????

    No, it's not possible.
    What happens when trying to restore the backup via iTunes?  It is entirely possible that the backup is simply corrupted.

  • LDIF Importing a user with a non-encrypted password fails, anywork arounds?

    I was able to import a group without issue:
    dn: cn=Authenticated,cn=Groups,dc=oraclelinux,dc=com
    description: test group
    objectClass: top
    objectClass: groupOfUniqueNames
    uniqueMember: cn=orcladmin,cn=People,dc=oraclelinux,dc=com
    cn: Authenticated
    But when I try to import a standard user:
    dn: cn=testuser2,cn=Users, dc=oraclelinux, dc=com
    userpassword:: password1
    description: test user
    objectClass: top
    objectClass: person
    sn: testuser2
    cn: testuser2
    It fails if I remove the password field then I can import the user without issue, but I need to include the password field as it is part of what was exported from the old LDAP Server.
    If I create a user in an ldif import it then add a password using oracle's Directory Manager upon exporting it the entry loks like:
    dn: cn=testuser, cn=Users, dc=oraclelinux, dc=com
    authpassword;orclcommonpwd: {MD5}fGoYCzaJagqMAnh+6vsOTA==
    authpassword;orclcommonpwd: {X- ORCLLMV}E52CAC67419A9A2238F10713B629B565
    authpassword;orclcommonpwd: {X- ORCLNTV}5835048CE94AD0564E29A924A03510EF
    authpassword;oid: {SASL/MD5}tUquh+Duowh2aWSEwONtcQ==
    authpassword;oid: {SASL/MD5-DN}lcQ7Z5O5vcwzXMeaZ65fYw==
    authpassword;oid: {SASL/MD5-U}AAWzkmDDCJLbs9mxoWBTiw==
    userpassword:: e1NIQX00NHJTRkpROXF0SFdUQkF2cnNLZDVLL3AyajA9
    description: test user
    objectclass: top
    objectclass: person
    sn: testuser
    cn: testuser
    Changing my imported ldif to look like the following WORKS:
    dn: cn=testuser2,cn=Users, dc=oraclelinux, dc=com
    userpassword:: e1NIQX00NHJTRkpROXF0SFdUQkF2cnNLZDVLL3AyajA9
    description: test user
    objectClass: top
    objectClass: person
    sn: testuser2
    cn: testuser2
    So the password must be encrypted then?, if so how to I generate a password hash on the command-line and through JAVA?
    Can an import be forced with a plain text password (Tivoli, SUN both support this functionality).
    Can I change the constraint that the password must contain a numeric char? (Found in document: http://download-uk.oracle.com/docs/cd/B28196_01/idmanage.1014/b15991/pwdpolicies.htm#g1051713)
    After fixing the constaints I can import a non-encrypted password from an ldif, but it can not be verified and only the authpassword;oid entries are created not the authpassword;orclcommonpwd entries.
    Thanks for your assistance,
    ERIC GANDT

    Eric, my first guess would be that the OID password policy prevents loading of the password i.e. the password doesn't match the existing password policy.
    What version is your "old" OID and what is the version of the current OID you're using?
    What is the error msg you get?
    regards,

  • Time Machine restore of File Vault encrypted user failed: Login failed due to an error.

    Hello everyone,
    I did regular time machine backups of a File Vault (version one) encrypted user folder. Now I needed to restore a few files that have been deleted unintentionally. Since single files can't be restored from a File Vault encrypted backup time machine told me that I must restore a complete backup from a certain time. I did that. Time machine quited to copy at about 25 percent and rebooted. Everything was looking good until I entered my password for the recovered user. Then I got the answer:
    "Logging in to the account failed because an error occurred"
    And now?
    I tried to restore some other backups, none was working. I copied the relevant .sparsebundle file out of the backup folders and tried to mount it. Didn't work. It says "not recognized". Then changed it's owner to root and tried again, the same answer. I tried to repair it by using hdiutil but it also says "attach failed - not recognized".
    Apple, I am asking you: Are my data lost?
    Anyone, please provide help.
    (Apple, it's more than a shame what you are providing for the safety of a user's data!)

    Try Repairing the backups, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
    If/when you get this sorted out, strongly consider switching to File Vault 2.  It works much better, especially with Time Machine.
    Or, if possible, only encrypting a few sensitive items, per Protecting confidential documents in a secure disk image.

  • When turning on Advanced Security Network Encryption tnsping fails

    Hi people,
    I'm installing Advanced Security Network Encryption in my server (RHEL 3), I've configured my sqlnet.ora as follows:
    SQLNET.CRYPTO_CHECKSUM_SERVER = REQUIRED
    SQLNET.CRYPTO_CHECKSUM_TYPES_SERVER = MD5
    SQLNET.ENCRYPTION_TYPES_SERVER= (RC4_256)
    SQLNET.ENCRYPTION_SERVER = REQUIRED
    SQLNET.CRYPTO_SEED = "abcdefg"
    After that, tnsping do not work anymore, I'm getting TNS-03505 - "Failed to resolve name".
    If I remove Adv. Security configuration tnsping become normal.
    Do anybody knows what can it be?
    Thanks in Advance
    André Teixeira

    Are you running tnsping from the server to itself? Or from the client? Has Advanced Security been configured on the client?

  • "Invalid IP adress" message when video chat failed

    I have problems trying to connect with a buddy with Videochat. I can see that she answers my call - "connecting to..." message is coming up, but then I get the error message "Connection failed, invaild IP adress" or sometghing like that. We have tried both ways, both audio and video, but always with this result.
    The only thing that works is text chat.
    Both she and I have enabeled camera and mic in our laptops.
    Any idea what the problem might be?
    Thanks for help

    Its an Leopard problem, get her to check sys prefs/sharing and make sure internet sharing is off(unticked).
    Restart ichat.

  • Encrypted root fails without udev in initramfs

    I'm trying to decrease my boot time on my new machine. After testing, I found the two biggest time-wasters on my system were Xorg and the initramfs. I can't do much about X, because I'm by no means highly skilled with code and I'd rather not use my inexpert skills to dissect and strip the Xorg binary. My focus, therefore, has been on removing udev from the initramfs to make it load faster.
    I have tried this before, manually specifying the drivers and modules I need in the MODULES array and removing all hooks except base, encrypt, and fsck. My root partition is encrypted, but I may not even need the encrypt hook since I specify the dm_crypt and cryptsetup module/binary in the proper arrays. When I try and boot this, however, it hangs and then drops me to a prompt with the error "/dev/mapper/root not found." Here is my mkinitcpio.conf:
    # vim:set ft=sh
    # MODULES
    # The following modules are loaded before any boot hooks are
    # run. Advanced users may wish to specify all system modules
    # in this array. For instance:
    # MODULES="piix ide_disk reiserfs"
    MODULES="sd_mod ata_piix jfs dm_crypt"
    # BINARIES
    # This setting includes any additional binaries a given user may
    # wish into the CPIO image. This is run last, so it may be used to
    # override the actual binaries included by a given hook
    # BINARIES are dependency parsed, so you may safely ignore libraries
    BINARIES="fsck.jfs fsck cryptsetup"
    # FILES
    # This setting is similar to BINARIES above, however, files are added
    # as-is and are not parsed in any way. This is useful for config files.
    FILES=""
    # HOOKS
    # This is the most important setting in this file. The HOOKS control the
    # modules and scripts added to the image, and what happens at boot time.
    # Order is important, and it is recommended that you do not change the
    # order in which HOOKS are added. Run 'mkinitcpio -H <hook name>' for
    # help on a given hook.
    # 'base' is _required_ unless you know precisely what you are doing.
    # 'udev' is _required_ in order to automatically load modules
    # 'filesystems' is _required_ unless you specify your fs modules in MODULES
    # Examples:
    ## This setup specifies all modules in the MODULES setting above.
    ## No raid, lvm2, or encrypted root is needed.
    # HOOKS="base"
    ## This setup will autodetect all modules for your system and should
    ## work as a sane default
    # HOOKS="base udev autodetect block filesystems"
    ## This setup will generate a 'full' image which supports most systems.
    ## No autodetection is done.
    # HOOKS="base udev block filesystems"
    ## This setup assembles a pata mdadm array with an encrypted root FS.
    ## Note: See 'mkinitcpio -H mdadm' for more information on raid devices.
    # HOOKS="base udev block mdadm encrypt filesystems"
    ## This setup loads an lvm2 volume group on a usb device.
    # HOOKS="base udev block lvm2 filesystems"
    ## NOTE: If you have /usr on a separate partition, you MUST include the
    # usr, fsck and shutdown hooks.
    HOOKS="base udev modconf keyboard encrypt fsck"
    # COMPRESSION
    # Use this to compress the initramfs image. By default, gzip compression
    # is used. Use 'cat' to create an uncompressed image.
    #COMPRESSION="gzip"
    #COMPRESSION="bzip2"
    #COMPRESSION="lzma"
    #COMPRESSION="xz"
    #COMPRESSION="lzop"
    COMPRESSION="cat"

    #COMPRESSION_OPTIONS=""
    I'm assuming udev is needed to scan for the root device and/or find the encrypted partition for cryptsetup to unlock. Is there a way around this? I'd like to cut out udev, as it is the biggest time hog within initramfs.
    I heard something about static /dev folders, but I'm not entirely sure how to go about setting that up or if it will work with an encrypted root...
    EDIT:
    I looked more closely at the initramfs shell on my latest test. Without udev, the /dev folder is still populated with my drive partitions and cryptsetup (when run manually from within initramfs) will unlock my root partition just fine. It seems to me that cryptsetup is failing to run initially for some reason. Thoughts?

    The encrypt hook requires the udev hook.  If you had taken a look at the actual install file for the encrypt mkinitpcio hook, you would have seen that it functions by pulling in a few udev rules which are activated when the init script calles "udevadm trigger".  If you want your initramfs to decrypt your filesystem without udev, you are going to have to write your own hook.
    As a side note, I have tried using mdadm vs mdadm_udev, as well as udev vs no-udev/btrfs in my initramfs, and having udev is always faster.  I think if you are so concerned about boot time, the best way to do that is to use a mush more simplified set up.  But since you use encryption, it would seem that security must have some signifigance to you, so that may not be an option.  You have to understand that the time spend in the initramfs also includes the time it takes for you to enter your password to decrypt your partition (if you use a password).
    One non-obvious thing you can do to potentially speed up your initramfs load time is to not compress it.  As far as compression is concerned, lzo is the fastest, and 3.9 brought some not insignifigant speed improvments.  But having it just read the whole thing uncompressed I have foudn to be consistently faster.
    Really though, I think the whole idea of speeding up boot time is not really something worth pursuing unless you have something that is making it horribly slow. What kind of time is systemd-analyze repotying anyway?  (BTW, systemd-analyze is not really a true representation of experienced boot time as it only records time it takes to get to userspace, which is not what most people think it is)

  • MOBILE VERSION DOES NOT WORK!!!!  Is Adobe not aware that encrypted forms fail using mobile reader??

    I created a PDF Form in Acrobat Pro 9, and encrypted it with a password.  No other restrictions were placed on the document.
    When I open the document on an android device (tablet or phone) or an iPod, it does not allow me to fill in any of the fields or apply a signature of any kind.
    However, when I open the same exact form with the desktop version (Reader XI), it does allow me to fill it out and sign it with no problem.
    I have no problems filling it out and applying a signature with a mobile device when the document is not encrypted.
    PLEASE HELP!
    I have updated all my versions to the most latest.

    Yes, apparently Adobe is aware of this.
    For Adobe to omit such basic functionality to its mobile version is appalling.
    I would have expected this from Microsoft, but not from Adobe.

    Wep and ath9k has been buggy for me for a long time now - sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Never got around it, adding "options ath9k nohwcrypt=1" into /etc/modprobe.d/ath9k.conf seemed to work for some time. You could give it a try. The network I have problems with is at the university, they use wep + vpn to connect. I can connect fine (like in your last iwconfig), but dhcpd times out.
    If you have control over the network, you could just switch to wpa - safer anyway. Or search the forum for "atheros wep", it is a somewhat common problem I think.
    P.S.: please use code tags when posting console output.

  • Chat fail

    I tried my first online chat with Verizon, to get the answers to questions about international service.  The first question took extra back and forth because of the rep's typos, and then, instead of answering my second question, she wrote thanks and ended the chat.  Now all chat reps are busy.  What a horrible system.  Anyone else with experience suggesting I should try this again?

        You should definitely have a better Chat experience than what you had jeds! We can answer your questions right here. You can also reach out to us on Twitter or Facebook. What other questions do you have?
