Encryption the column in oracle 10g
Hi,
I have a table containing ~ 45 millions records.
I have to apply encryption to 37 columns in the table. I tried with one column, that took around 7.5 hrs. to complete.
I used the below command for encryption:
ALTER TABLE employee MODIFY (first_name ENCRYPT NO SALT);
Could you please suggest some alternative way to apply the encryption to this table.

Hi Ashwani,
my 1 CPU 1 GB RAM laptop encrypts 1,000,000 credit card numbers in 90 seconds; so your's should done in an hour but not more.
You can use Online Table Redefinition, but then, with 37 columns encrypted, your performance impact will be significant once you're done.
I would highly (!!) recommend to upgrade to 11gR2 and use TDE tablespace encryption.

Ideally you would do the hashing of the password inside the client side application so only the Hashed value goes over the network, but the above demonstrates the principle of using hashes to store passwords. Because it's a one way algorithm, only a brute force method can be used to try and determine the original password. There is no way to directly un-hash the value. To check for a valid login, we don't retrieve the password and try to unhash it to compare against what the user has supplied, we actually take what the user has supplied and hash that in the same way and then compare the hashes.
The point of including the username or some other data in the hashing process means that if two users have the same password, they will still have different hash values, so it won't be apparent they are the same passwords. In my example, the point of putting another character between the concatenation of username and password is in case the username and password together would give the same result e.g.
If we had one user "Fred" with password "Fr3ddy" then just concatenating the strings would give "FredFr3ddy".
If we had another user "FredF" and he happened to choose a password "r3ddy" then just concatenating those would also give "FredFr3ddy"
by introducing a known breaking character they would be different e.g. "Fred!Fr3ddy" and "FredF!r3ddy" and hence give different hash values.
That's the basics of how passwords are stored for security.
It would take a lot of processing power and brute force methods just to determine a single password for a single user when using hashing methods of security.
With encryption, a brute force method could be used to find the decryption key, and once found that could be used to decrypt ALL the encyrpted data, hence it is less secure, especially when some clever person will no doubt have written the key down somewhere so they don't forget it. With hashing there's no key to write down. -
Issue while selecting XMLType column in Oracle 10G

Executing Procedure in SQL SERVER and Storing the results in Oracle 10g

I am trying execute SQL SERVER procedure from Oracle 10g and store the results in a oracle table. When I tried executing the procedure i am getting errors.
I am using Oracle Heteroeneous Services.
Steps I followed.
1. Created ODBC DSN on Oracle Server connecting to SQL SERVER database.
2. Created Listner entry and TNSNAMES entries.
3. Created Database link and able to select the data from the SQL SERVER tables.

I have checked the packages and the XFree86-libs-4.3.99 is not installed. I guess I will have to install it.
Now your question about oracle user. I am not sure if you have performed any SAP MDM installation with ORACLE RDBMS but the installation guide is totally different than the normal SAP inst guides. Indeed someone needs to install separately SAP MDM and ORACLE and in my installation I do not install NetWeaver since it is not mandatory for the testing phase of the project. You can have a look at the guide (it is very poor -no reference to ORACLE details):

So the official ORACLE inst gudie says to install the ORACLE software with the oracle user.

Not able to start the listener in oracle 10g after the domain name changed

I had installed the oracle 10g on zLinux. It was working fine( was able to mount the database and start the listener). Now my server's domain name got changed. So i have added the new domain name in the tnsnames.ora and listeners.ora file . now i could able to mount the databases but am not able to start the listener . whille starting the listener , am getting the following error

Max number of columns in Oracle 10g Express?
Hi, I have read that Oracle has 250-1600 columns "depending on the column type". Could someone please explain this more fully? I tried just having VARCHAR2(10) fields but still it was stopping at 250 fields.

I need it because this is genetics data that I ALWAYS use in wide rather than narrow form, to do statistical analysis on the data, so it is organized with one row per subject, and I want to be able to merge that data with many other tables that are also wide without having to transform it first with other data, like patient history. My other tables also will have many columns, for instance patient history has indicator fields of whether a person has had heart disease (yes/no) and so forth for hundreds of variables, but other variables that are demographic, like DOB, and so forth- I want to do one-to-one merges with my genetics data files with my patient history files, so one of the reasons I'm going with Oracle is because it has 1000 columns per table.
My error is not on the create, but on the load. I'm loading from SAS, with this code:

Oracle will first check if column EMPID exists in DEPT table.
If it does not, then it checks for the Columns presence in Outer query.
And this happens, because you did not use Table Alias. Had an Alias been used, the column would have been checked only in the Aliased table.
Moreover, you would not lose anything but to check the query on a database, would you?
Easy enough to check this, right?
create table test_table (col1 number, col2 varchar2(5));
create table test_table2 (col1 number);
select *
from test_table t1
where col2 in (select col2 from test_table2 t2 where t1.col1 = t2.col1);

Problems with the installation if oracle 10g
hi everybody,
I am using windows xp pro service pack 2. While trying install
oracle 10g. I faced a problem 'Error in writing to
directiory c:\document and settings\Owner\Local
Settings\TEMP\OraInstall. Please ensure that this
directory is writable and has at least 45 MB of disk
space. Installation cannot continue.' I have 40GB disk
space left and i am logged in as an administrator with all privileges.

mfg RRI think I remember encountering something similar on the very same platform (XP pro, 10g (or 9i second ed.) and 2nd service pack). I am using Windows Services for Unix (SFU - a free download from Microsoft @ http://www.microsoft.com/windows/sfu/default.asp ). I used SFU from within a command tool to change the privileges. If you are a unix person who are trying to do things like installing/managing Oracle on windows, I highly recommend installing SFU. After I changed the privileges, it worked just fine. Currently I am running 9.2.0.5 on windows xp pro and testing 10g on another xp pro box. Both installation was successful.
