End of the line for AW???

I just wanted to share a few words (and frustrations.) Many moons ago when I was a student in university, I learned how to do basic word processing on Macs that were available to students in the computer lab. These were Mac computer that had been donated by Apple.
Over the past 20 years or so I have been involved in education and I have operated my own company. I have purchased at least 12 or 15 computers over the years. I'm currently using a G5 tower with 2 Gigs of ram.
Much of my business is set up and run using Appleworks. Business letters, faxes, etc. etc. all have company logos and letterhead and all of my customers are in AW databases. I also use the mail merge feature to print some 3,000 envelopes per month.
We have been using OS Tiger for the past year or two and yesterday I purchased a new Imac and I also upgraded my computer to Leopard. Much to my dismay AW is not working in this new OS on my computer. When I print my business letters, the artwork does not appear on the page, the database crashes way too often, and I often get the spinning beachball of death that causes me to sit at my computer and stare at the screen for many wasted minutes. I'm not a geek but I understand that it has something to do with Rosetta and I know that Apple has announced that it will no longer support AW. I guess that this is the end of the line for me as far as AW is concerned. (and yes I have repaired permissions and done other basic maintenance.)
I now have to invest a huge amount of time and energy to re-do all of my business templates in Word or some other word processing software and to set up a new data base system to keep track my customers. I consider myself to be a loyal Apple customer, and after all the money and time I have invested in Apple products, this is a huge let down for me and a gigantic disappointment. It is all so frustrating.
I guess I won't be visiting these forums any more after I convert all of my data and I wanted to thank those that have helped me in the past.
Cheers.
BTW, can anyone recommend a good database program similar to AW?

First, let me say that I'm not running Leopard, so I won't be able to help directly in getting your AW working. However I think I can help point you in the right direction. I am confident others will fill in the details.
I'm not a geek but I understand that it [problems with AW] has something to do with Rosetta
Rosetta is what allows programs written for the Power PC to run on Intel processors. It has been used with AppleWorks under both Tiger and Leopard by some people here with no problem.
I know that Apple has announced that it will no longer support AW. I guess that this is the end of the line for me as far as AW is concerned.
It should be possible to get AW to work fine on your current machine and use it for years to come. I would certainly start thinking about how to move off of AW, but it certainly doesn't have to be today (assuming you can get it working now).
BTW, can anyone recommend a good database program similar to AW?
Filemaker has come out with a product "Bento" that is being billed as a simple DB program. It may not be powerful enough for you. Also it won't directly import AW databases. However you can give it a try for free and see what you think:

    My midi/audio interface ( Edirol PCR1) will not interface with Yosemite 10.10 and Roland have no driver update, is there any fix for the problem or is the end of the line for this device.

    Same problem here, what a shame as this has been my favorite portable keyboard for ages. Whenever I see one in a store(very rarely) I'll grab it.

  • End of the line for my LaserWriter 320?

    I've been using an old Apple LaserWriter 320 for 12 years (really!) and did get it to work with OSX (I have 10.4.6 now) and it hasn't been a happy printer lately. First, the computer wouldn't talk with the Asante Ethernet to Local Talk adapter, so I changed the cable. That worked because the Asante was receiving the signal, but there still is no communication between the Asante and the LaserWriter. I changed that cable as well, and it's still the same thing. I've also reset the Asante and the LaserWriter (because sometimes that worked in the past) and that did not help. (And I know someone will ask this -- Yes, I am choosing the LaserWriter in the print dialog box.) This brings me down the three possibilities: hardware problem with the Asante, hardware problem with the printer, or the OS just really can't communicate with this old printer. In the prefs, it shows that the laser printer has driver 10.4 and PPD 4.0. The dialog box (which comes up when I try to print w/MS Word) still always tells me it can't communicate with the printer.
    In case you're wondering why I bother with a laser printer, it is because I do have a need for a lot of B/W printing and hate to use my ink jet for that (but I've been forced to lately).
    So it is really the end of the line for my good old Laser Writer?

    Oops - I had forgotten how much my printer hates my fonts! I ran a test page with the Times font (something I know the printer will handle, and it did). Up until this point, it kept saying "Printer not responding" and the Asante showed no transmission to the printer. Hmmm... neither of these errors pointed out the fact it coudln't handle the fonts. (But error messages so rarely do help.) So then I took the doc I really wanted to print, saved it as a PDF, and then printed and it worked. I remember OS 9 having a feature in the print dialog box that helped me work around this problem, but there isn't anything like that in OS X. Any ideas?

  • Is this the end of the line for upgrades?

    Hello. I have a great old PB 15 inch titanium w/ 1G RAM and essentially no storage space but it's hooked up to 2 hard drives. I would love to upgrade to the new ILife but I would need Leopard and it's a 667 MHz G4. Can the processor be upgraded? Can the hard drive be upgraded, it's only 30 GB. Would other stuff also need to be changed? I hate to have to get rid of it cause it works so well.
    Thanks for the info in advance.

    Unfortunately, the 667 MHz processor cannot be upgraded to Leopard, as it does not meet the technical specs:
    http://www.apple.com/macosx/techspecs/
    I don't know of a way to upgrade the processor.
    However, the hard drive can be upgraded to as much as 320 GB:

    Hope this helps;
    Good luck!

    Hi, i am having an issue with a basic motion scroll effect.
    I already watched and read every tutorial out there regarding this topic and even tried the adobe chat support, but the guy on the other end of the line disconnected me…, probably he didn't understand what i wanted from him because english is not my native language, so a will try to be very, very clear about this one..
    please note, that i am new to muse, this is my first project ever.
    my idea is as following:
    when the customer comes to our companies site, he just sees our logo on a white Background. the logo consists of, say, four elements. when the customer scrolls down, the logo starts to disassamble: first the first part of the logo flies out the left side of the site, then the second part of the logo vanishes down, then the third part of the logo flies to the right, then the fourth part of the logo flies to the top and out of the customers view. given what i have seen, it is possible to do that….
    so…..
    now i have the four parts of my logo imported as png files into muse and assembled them in design view to build our companies logo. I select every one of the four parts and go into the scroll effects tab left beside the layers tab. first i enter the same values for every one of the four parts: initial motion: 0x and 0x again for the left and right motion; key position ( t-handle) : 0px; final motion: 0x and 0x again for the left and right value.
    now i hit "preview".: the logo is "pinned" at the correct position, i can scroll but the logo stays where it is. so far so good….
    now i select all the four elements again and go to the scroll effecs tab. at "final motion", i click the down arrows and enter 1x. I hit Preview…
    when i am scrolling down the WHOLE logo goes down…. so far so good.
    NOW i want the first part of the logo to go down, THEN the second part to go left, THEN the third part to go up, THEN the fourth part to go right.
    so i select ONLY the first part, go to the scroll motion tab, at "final motion" i click the left arrows, then i enter 1x.( the up-down value, i set to 0 again).. i hit Preview…
    the first part of the logo goes left as soon as i start scrolling, the other three parts still go down at the same time…
    NOW i want the second part of the logo to start moving, when the first part has left the scene, not at the same time as the first part.
    SO I SELECT THE SECOND PART AND DRAG ITS T-HANDLE (KEY POSITION) DOWN TO, LETS SAY, 200PX. SO IT STARTS MOVING ONLY AFTER THE CUSTOMER HAS REACHED THAT POINT, RIGHT?
    BUT WHEN I PREVIEW THAT ****, THE LOGO IS NOT TOGETHER ANYMORE, THE SECOND PART IS FLOATING ANYWHERE ELSE BUT WHERE IT SHOULD BE…..WTFF????
    short: when i move the t handle, the initial position of the object changes. thats what i said to the adobe employee, but he said, that thats the expected behavior….
    but if thats so, how can i have my four parts correctly together, so they form my logo, but with different t handles, so that they all start to move at different times??
    Pleeease help me, i am dying of frustration here…..:( that behavior cant be right, right?
    Thanks so much to everyone who actually reads this post and tries to help…….
    All the best,
    Niki Lapan

    Thank you so much for helping,
    But i really wonder how you did that. did you always switch between design view and preview view, then change the key position for 2px then switch back, to align the four letters? because i imagine that can get really frustrating, if you have a logo consisting of 58 parts instead of 4!:)
    Anyway thank you very much for your time and effort!!!!

  • When saving an image in PS CS 6, and going back to Lightroom 5. The original image and the edited image are at the end of the line up.

    I'm using a Mac, Lightroom 5 and Photoshop CS 6. I've started having an issue with the line up in Lightroom 5 after saving an image from PS CS 6. For some reason when I save the edited image form CS 6 it's taking the edited image and the original image and putting it at the end of the line up in Lightroom. If I take the edited image and move it to the right of the original it will put both of them back in the line up where they should be. How do I fix this. I've been looking in the menu for some kind of setting  with no luck.

  • Utl_file.utl_raw adds a line feed at the end of the line. How to avoid it.

    utl_file.utl_raw adds a line feed at the end of the line. I have to send some binary files to my vendor and they do not want a line feed at the end of the line.
    When I execute the sample program below, it creates a file with a line feed(chr(10)) at the end of the line. When I do dump in hexa, it shows a character x0A
    How to avoid the line feed at end of line?
    We are using Oracle 9i on unix platform.

    utl_file.put_raw( l_output, v_raw );
    utl_file.fflush( l_output );
    utl_file.fclose( l_output );
    dbms_output.put_line( utl_raw.cast_to_varchar2( v_raw ) );
    EXCEPTION
    WHEN OTHERS THEN
         dbms_output.put_line( sqlerrm );
    end;
    /

    oops, sorry i overlooked the fact that the db is 9i; thanks for pointing it out Solomon.
    Not sure about this, but a workaround could be to remove the "\n" characters at the end of each line using one of the many Unix utilities after the file has been created.

  • Ios updates to first generation iPad ?  Is 5.1.1 the end of the line ??

    ios updates to first generation iPad ?  Is 5.1.1 the end of the line ??

    That's not so good!  I found 5.1 was fairly stable but since upgrading to 5.1.1, Safari crashes frequently and it totally refuses to read some PDF's that have been readable in iBooks previously.
    My local Apple Store said the problem was that my IPad (2 years old) is obsolete and I should buy a new one!
    I know people have complained about IOS6 because of the mapping - but I would welcome anything that made it crash less!
    Maybe related but I used to charge the battery every three days (I just use it for email & web in the evenings).  Since the upgrade, I have to charge every day.  3 hours use tonight and it's down to 20%.
    I've completely disabled iCloud (again a shame because I really liked the syncing with my iPhone4s) and the only two apps that are ever active are Safari & Email.
    Any ideas?  Should I just accept defeat, eBay this one and buy a new one?

  • When making a phone call, the other end of the line hears a strange dial up sounding noise. Its loud and quite annoying. What do i do?!

    Loud screechy noises are heard on the other end of the line when my iphone 4s is in a phone call. It has to be my phone because multiple people and myself have confirmed hearing it. Its sounds like dial-up. BUT REALLY LOUD!

    I just replied to a similar post and I'll copy and paste my response here. I was having the same exact issue. Here is my possible fix.
    Yesterday I updated the OS to the latest release. Then right after that I called AT&T and they reset my sim card. Or something like that. They did some sort of reset.
    I then got in my car and drove around to test the phone. Because that is when the problem is worse. FINALLY they claim to be able to hear me clearly!!!!
    I think it was the combination of both the OS update and the sim card reset that fixed it. Hopefully..... It has only been one day but so far so good. I'll update this post if things change.
    Try this and let us know if this works for you.

  • How to delete the line for 300SAP* in table USR02 in SQL Management studio

    Hello
    I used to delete the line for 300SAP* in table USR02 in SQL Enterprise Manager. After I could log on with “pass”.
    I wander how to delete it in SQL Management studio. When I expand tdatabase it takes so long time and it is uncontrollable

    Hello,
    you have to delete the row by a sql statement.
    Open a new query and run a script like this:
    use <Your SID DB>                 -- e.g. use PRD
    setuser 'your sid in lowercase'  --- e.g. setuser 'prd'
    delete from USR02 where MANDT = '300' and BNAME = 'sap*'
    go
    Run a complete backup before deleting data manually.

    I am looking for information on iPad and iPhone apps and Mac software that are "top of the line" for academic research. The most current and comprehensive information I have found is dated July 2010.

    PogoPossum,
    My area of interest is in business and economic history. There is a considerable amount of reading and charting. Until the iPad hit the streets, I only considered stacks of books, journals, and downloaded documents, all marked up with highlighters, underlines, and marginal notes.
    Most of my PC based work involved MS Office, Endnote, and MS OneNote.
    What I would like to do with the iPad and MacBook are the same things (Office, Endnote, OneNote) and add the ability to read and markup all forms of printed materials from books to pdf to webpages.
    I cut my teeth on an iPod Touch and have tried a lot of the note taking and reading apps. Without a camera the standard iPod Notes works for short quick notes and long think pieces. I just emailed the content and downloaded the stuff to my PC. Obviously, I do not want to continue at this "non-integrated" level of work.
    Does this help?

  • Hi - I want to establish my Time capsule at the other end of the house, for security reasons.  If a fire occurs at my computer,  it is not much help if the backup is adjacent.

    Hi - I want to establish my Time capsule at the other end of the house, for security reasons.  If a fire occurs at my computer,  it is not much help if the backup is adjacent.    From what I have read, the TC requires an ethernet connection to the outside world (which is where my computer is).  I don't understand this; I think my wireless network (airport) should be able to handle backups, since it is capable of broadcasting video, which has a much higher transfer bit-rate.  So, why can't I use Airport for my backups  to Time Capsule?
         -  Thanks,  Gareth

    You can absolutely back up to your time capsule via wifi.  This is what the majority of people with a time capsule do.  It connects to a modem or WAN access point via ethernet though.

  • End of the line - crawling speed.

    I have spent hours (maybe days in total) since shifting to BT in February.
    I get to talk to some very pleasant and obliging people around the world, unfortunately I have the same problem today as I had with Talk Talk - speeds of 0.6-0.7mbps.
    Before I came to BT the sales lady assured me I'd get 1.5Mb, the last guy I spoke to in India said they would only have promissed 1MB - I suggested he listened to the conversation I had in January (they are all recorded for "training" purposes.
    Having worked on voice recordings for a major claring bank I am aware that they only refer to these if it is in the company's interest rather than the customers and any reference to "training" is only incidental.
    I digress. The issue I have is that when I complain someone flicke a few switched and I get up to 1Mb, once or twice it has been 1.1Mb - but it only lasts a few hours at most 2 days then I'm back to 0.7-0.8 and within a week I am back to the 0.6-0.7 range once more.
    They have sent engineers to my home and to the exchange. and checked the speeds at various junction boxes along the 3.5 mile route. Indeed I have been told that being the "end of line", the box that supplies me (about 300m away) is running at 1Mb but the next one which is 500m down the road (and services a small housing estate) is running at 6Mb.
    It seems that because I am literally the last property on this stretch of copper, I am insignificant.
    I am considering pulling out of landline provision as 90% of my calls are on mobile, and a mobile dongle would allow my home network to run at 2-3Mb wchich at worst is 3 times faster than copper.
    I was about to call the complaint line when I discovered this forum - so decided to vent my splean before enduring the " have you checked this, that and the other preamble" which they always follow before finally passing me on to the "supervisor" who quickly throws me onto the so-called "techncal team" who promise to monitor the situation for 24hours - which is jargon for  "we'll re-boot the kit at the exchange which will give you a temporary boost to 1mb until the line errors cause it to step down to 0.7mbps over the ensuing couple of days - but we can at least show management that we did something to pacify you". What everyone knows is that the only way to improve the situation is to rip out 500m of 75-year old copper cable and replace it with cable of a higher spec - just like they did for the estate down the road.

    I came across a facility to check on reported faultsb at https://www.bt.com/consumerFaultTracking/secure/faults/tracking.do?pageId=5&reload=true
    so I tried it out to find only the last fault (Sept 14th) - it took ages to load BT's speedchecket and eventually after running it the speed was 0.62mb - so it had obviously speeded up by then. last week on one occasion it was running at 0.22mbits and earlier that day I had 0.0mbits - however the fact it gave me a result at all suggests it was more than that (perhaps the software was "too ashamed" to say what it really was!). If so the software is more intelligent tan most of the people at the call centre.
    The thing is since switching to BT I get around 0.7-0.8mb but when I complain it sometimes goes up to 1 or 1.1mb but within 24 hours it drops to 0.8 and after another 24 hours bottoms out at 0.6-0.7 once more. On several occasions BT has sent out engineers, and it seems the "fault"  is around 700m of cable - that is, 700m down the road there is a 4mbits service but at my roadside connection point the speed is around 1mbit (on a good day, just after BT resets the kit at the exchange). I have madee a dozen calls this year - but only the last one (2 weeks ago) is shown on the tracking service - and that was closed a week ago - there are no details it just saus "closed").
    All BT did wes reset the exchange equipment on the day I called - as the speed went up to 1m as usual and as I predicted it was down to 0.6 again 2 days later. BT recons that they are providing me with 1mb speed and that is all they are obliged to do. but that is like a Reliant Robin dealer saying he can prove the car will run at 50mph and goes to the top of a gradient turns the car around, gets the needle up to 51mph going down the hill and then says - see it will do more than 50. Rubbish service is rubbish service.

  • End of the line....

    Hi
    I have lived in my perfect rural location for just over 2 years now, when I first came the broadband worked beautifully and I was pleasantly surprised at how stable/fast ot was given where I am.
    Last winter we had some pretty poor weather/high winds and since then my connection has been ropey at best. I have had 2 engineers out so far and am awaiting another hopefully today. I think that the problem is caused by the line going through so many trees until it reaches the pole, the first engineer replaced the line to allow some slack for movement but still have problems. The second engineer thought he had found a fault 100m or more from the house but then reported all ok on investigation. When I called to report the problem (last 3 days no phone or internet!) the automated service kindly told me there was no fault with the line! Argh! But an engineer is due to resolve by today apparentely.....
    How do we stand with the whole tree issue and interference caused as a result? The council tell me they don't cut or trim trees for phone lines but I am at the point of cancelling everything as whats the point in paying for something that doesnt work or at best is intermittent!?
    Any advice/help please...

    if it is the trees that are causing the problem then it is the owners of the trees who need to trim them no openreach.  obviously if that is your problem then regardless which ISP you use apart from cable you will have the same problem
